4-0 out of 5 stars Best travelbook about Madagascar
Excellent travelbook about Madagascar.
+ detailed maps of many interested sites, routes.
- too small information about prices.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easily the best guide to Madagascar!
Well, there are only 2 English-language travel guides to the country around.
Of those two, Lonely Planet is downright awful and unusually poorly researched (see reviews there), so even if you are normally a faithful fan of LP guides, for Madagascar this book is definitely the one to buy.
It contains far more information, based mostly on many years of personal experience of the author. It has a wealth of information on wildlife and national parks, as well as cultural aspects. The style is personal and engaging, often making you feel you are getting personal tips from an old hand.
So why only 4 stars? Well, as the author regularly admits herself, some of the info in the book comes from readers of the previous editions. While part of that is useful too, some of it (such as a raving description of awful tourist trap Foret Ialatsara) is downright incorrect, and no doubt would not have been included in the book had the author had the chance to check it out herself. Also, certain prices given in this book seemed many, many years old.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Information
We are traveleing to Madagascar this summer and have had trouble finding internet based companies in Madagascar. Her recommendations were great! Also, the information about the parks was a real help in deciding where to go in a limited time frame.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Stuff!
Hugely detailed, engaging style, up-to-date, fun and informative to read. Without any doubt the best guide to Madagascar on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Without any doubt the best guide to Madagascar on the market!
We love the Bradt guides because they are personal, innovative and in-depth. We used this guide along with 2 other well-known guides, but the Bradt guide was without any doubt the best of the three. If you like to get off the beaten track (without necessarily missing out on the highlights), this is the guide you're looking for! It also includes reader reports and funny anecdotes. One negative point: the maps are far from perfect. If you only take one guide with you, we would definitely recommend to buy some additional maps.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Birder's Guide
This is truly an excellent guide to the birds of Madagascar. The photographs are of high quality and in most cases can be used to readily identify the bird in question. I particularly like the introductory section on the Habitats and the birds found in them in the several ecological areas of the island. This is of great help to an outsider experiencing this magnificent island for the first time. As pointed out by the authors, the number of breeding species is only about 204 of which some 120 species are endemic. This is not an overwhelming number compared with the vast numbers in neighboring Africa. The speciesthat are endemic are a particularly interesting assortment with as many as six enemic families with as yet unclearified relationships with other bird groups. This is the one place where more information on these unique endemics would have been useful in understanding the avifauna of Madagascar. I will be putting the guide to the test in an upcoming extended tour of the island. I'm sure it will be most useful. ... Read more

Originally appearing as a series of magazine articles, the valuable research into air operations, over the old-style Middle East of World War II, here appears in book form. It deals with a variety of engagements between Britain and her Commonwealth forces and the Germans, Italians and Vichy French across many borders and differing terrains.

It covers from the Italian threat and Ababa, the air battles over Lebanon, the breaking of Vichy air strength and culminates in the occupation of Madagascar in 1942. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars ALWAYS THE SAME ...

3-0 out of 5 stars Looking for old & undiscovered Warbirds?
There have been precious few volumes written about the air wars in countries we'd today prefer to give a miss. These include Italian East Africa (Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia), Iraq, Syria, Iran and Madagascar. I was amazed at the level of aerial activity in some of these places. With the home front accounting for modern fighters and bombers, these colonial backwater units were forced to fight with a collection of antique aeroplanes. And fight they did. The Italians fought using biplane fighters and clumsy-looking bombers and transports. The British and South African air forces in Ethiopia for instance, matched them with an equally embarrassing level of technology. These heroic aviators used Hawker Hartebees', Gloster Gauntlets and Gladiators and even World War I-era Vickers Vincents to name a few. Hawker Hurricane's were like hens teeth and when it looked like the Italians were shooting down too many, the allies temporarily withdrew their monoplane fighters. I can't r! eally call this book entertaining. It records the daily activity of the units that flew on both sides in a type of dairy format. It describes the fighting in date order, which isn't research-friendly, although Shores' own research efforts must have been humungous. What may be of value are the names of the many towns and airstrips used by each side and which aircraft and crews were shot down and where. For someone wanting clues to finding rare ex-World War Two aeroplanes, this must be the place to start, but you'd need contacts in high places to get visas for such an expedition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, entertaining, and true!
It reads like an adventure book - except these stories are real!

This book makes for a fun and thoroughly entertaining reading as it tells the true stories of ships that shipwrecked around the island of Madagascar from the time of the great sea explorations of the 16th century through the pirate era of the 17th century to recent times. It makes for both fun and educational reading as it entwines a look into the history of sea travel and the history of Madagascar, with the adventure and survival stories of people that found themselves stranded on often inhospitable terrain. The stories of the pirates that made Madagascar their stronghold in the 17th-18th century are fascinating. The many photos of the ships and the wrecks really make one relate to the stories. The style is easy and entertaining. The book is very well researched. It truly makes history come alive!

From the author: Based on pellets collected at the first known nest of this endemic species, data are presented on the diet of the Madagascar Red Owl (Tyto soumagnei). This owl feeds almost exclusively on small mammals, the vast majority of which are native to the island. There is evidence that this species hunts at the forest edge and uses open human-degraded habitats. There is virtually no overlap in the diet of the Madagascar Red Owl and the Barn Owl (T. alba).

From the author: Observations of territoriality, vocalizations, display behavior, and nesting of the Velvet Asity (Philepitta castanea: Eurylaimidae: Philepittinae) indicate that this species is polygynous. Males defend nonresource-based, display territories that are distributed in dispersed leks. Male display repertoires include six elaborate secondary sexual display elements which are performed in both intrasexual and intersexual contexts. Pairs of female-plumage birds construct the nest outside of male territories, and females perform post-fledging parental care. Occassional observations of adult males in association with female-plumaged birds at the nest indicate potential plasticity in breeding behavior within the species. The evolution of the breeding system, display behavior, plumage, delayed male plumage maturation, and molt of the asities is discussed in a phylogenetic context. Two displays of P. castanea originally evolved in the common ancestor of the asities. The distinctive appearance of P. castanea in the breeding season is a worn basic plumage which has evolved by acquisition of a sexually dichromatic basic plumage and the loss of the prealternate molt. Delayed plumage maturation originally evolved in the common ancestor of the genus Philepitta. An additional, distinctive, predefinitive plumage stage-class has evolved in Schlegel's Asity (P. schlegeli).
