Product Description
For hundreds of years, models of magnetism have been pivotal in the understanding and advancement of science and technology, from the Earth's interpretation as a magnetic dipole to quantum mechanics, statistical physics, and modern nanotechnology. This book is the first to envision the field of magnetism in its entirety. It complements a rich literature on specific models of magnetism and provides an introduction to simple models, including some simple limits of complicated models. The book is written in an easily accessible style, with a limited amount of mathematics, and covers a wide range of quantum-mechanical, finite-temperature, micromagnetic and dynamical models. It deals not only with basic magnetic quantities, such as moment, Curie temperature, anisotropy, and coercivity, but also with modern areas such as nanomagnetism and spintronics, and with 'exotic' themes, as exemplified by the polymer analogy of magnetic phase transitions. Throughout the book, a sharp line is drawn between simple and simplistic models, and much space is devoted to discuss the merits and failures of the individual model approaches. ... Read more

Product Description
Intended for undergraduate courses in physics for students in biological physics, life sciences, biophysics, physiology, medical physics, and biomedical engineering, this book is an introduction to electricity and magnetism with examples and problems from the medical and biological sciences; it covers standard topics of electrostatic fields and potentials, electric currents, electrochemistry and bioelectricity, and electromagnetism.

This new edition of a classic set of books, originally published in 1974 from the authors' typescript, has been edited, updated, corrected, indexed, and typeset. It will satisfy the growing need for a working knowledge of the physical sciences among students and practitioners in the medical and biological sciences. The books can be used as supplements to standard introductory physics courses, as texts for medical schools, medical physics courses, and biology departments, and as a reference for practitioners. Chapters include problems and references.

The authors are recognized experts in the field. Benedek was the recipient of the 1995 Irving Langmuir Prize from the American Physical Society's Division of Chemical Physics, and the 1994 Biological Physics Prize from the American Physical Society.

FROM THE REVIEWS:

PHYSICS TODAY"These are classic books, and anyone planning to include bio-physical examples in a calculus-level course should study them carefully...The authors are to be congratulated for their work, and I commend AIP Press and Springer-Verlag for making the books available again." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific textbook
Wonderful textbook with a very thorough and logical presentation. Also, a fine and extensive selection of problems, both worked examples and end-of-chapter problems.Highest recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lost Treasure
Finding a copy of this book is equivalent to Indiana Jones finding a long lost treasure. It might also sell for a small fortune on the black market or Amazon as well.Having found a copy myself, really did helped me survive my undergraduate electromagnetism class. What makes the book so brilliant is all the worked examples (300 to be exact), and their clear explanations. The only draw back sometimes is the notation, as the symbols used sometimes are different from say what one would find in say Griffiths' Introduction to Electrodynamics. One example would be Phi, as it's is used for electric potential instead of electric flux. But this really isn't a problem, as one can always tell from the context what is meant.Below is the chapter outline,
Vector Analysis
Electrostatics
Electrostatic Boundary Value Problems
Formal Theory of Dielectric Electrostatics
The Microscopic Theory of Dielectrics
Electrostatic Energy
Steady Currents
Magnetism of Steady Currents
Formal Theory of Magnetism and Matter
The Microscopic Theory of Magnetism
Induction
Magnetic Energy
Circuits with Nonsteady Currents
Maxwell's Equations
Radiation
Electromagnetic Boundary Value Problems
The Special Theory of Relativity.
The book also includes
Appendix I: System of Units
Appendix II: Divergence, Curl, Gradients, and Laplacian
Appendix III: Some Fundamental Constants of Physics
Appendix IV: Some SI Derived Units with Special Names.
Overall, great book.If it was still in print, I'd recommend it as the standard. It really is a must have reference for any physics library.

4-0 out of 5 stars E&M... old school
Nayfeh is my E&M professor. He uses this book for every homework in the class, so I figured I'd hunt it down and buy it. It's a very helpful text with lots and lots of examples. It's fairly well written and easy to use and chocked full of examples. Nothing flashy, but very thorough.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book
I wonder why people in US are not familiar with this book. This book is great, full of examples. It is translated to my language "Farsi" and almost all the students In Iran are using it as their best reference book. I like it so much. I have the Farsi one but i just purchased the English version to prepare myself in English.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book.
Most people don't know this book exists, and I wish I had known about it when I was an undergraduate, but at least I have it in my library now!I originally tracked down a used copy of this out of print book because the author (Nayfeh) happened to be the professor of the electrodynamics class I took in grad school.Copies of this book can be difficult to find, but are well worth the effort.

The book is a treasure trove of solved elecrodynamics problems. It has 300 worked examples, and half of the problems have answers to them in the back of the book. The book also covers some subjects that are neglected in Griffiths, such as magnetic scalar potential (something Griffiths makes no use of, but can be a real life saver), and magnetic circuits.

All in all I'd say that this book is slightly more rigorous than Griffiths, but nowhere near the level of the infamous Jackson's textbook.

Out of all the textbooks I've bought over the years this one was by far one of the best purchases I've made.It was worth every dollar I paid for it.Nayfeh told us that he and his coauthor were working on a new edition, I wish they hurry up and get it to the printing press. ... Read more

Product Description
Ruthenate materials have come into focus recently because of their very interesting magnetic and superconducting properties. From the first international conference on this topic, the present volume has emerged as a first coherent account of the considerable body of work, both theoretical and experimental, gathered in this field within a short time span. The book has been written in the form of a set of lectures and tutorial reviews with the aim of providing the research community with both a comprehensive and modern source of reference and a tutorial introduction for postgraduate students and nonspecialists working in related areas. ... Product Description

These simple, fun experiments in magnetism and electricity will get kids all charged up. Test out a kitchen magnet and watch what it attracts; "light the light" with a fluorescent bulb and a piece of wool; "see" invisible magnetic fields and find the strongest part of the magnet; paste things together with static glue; make your TV screen snap, crackle, and pop; and transmit Morse code with a station you build yourself. Almost all the materials are easy to find in the house or inexpensive to buy, and each experiment has a section that explains the underlying scientific principles--plus, they're all safe. This collection is absolutely electrifying!
