Physical Methods in Bioinorganic Chemistry is an excellent, useful tool for the begining student interested in the spectrroscopy of biologically related inorganic complexes. Each chapter focuses on spectroscopictechniques not usually taught in graduated level classes, but that are usedoften in the liturature. Topics include resonance raman, x-rayabsorption, NMR, ENDOR, EPR, CD & MCD and many more.The chaptersprovide the physical basis for the technique at a level that isintelligent, but not too advanced to understand by the begining student. This book is based on some of the lectures during the Pacific Institute of Theoretical Physics (PITP) summer school on Quantum Magnetism , held during June 2006 in Les Houches, in the French Alps. The school was funded jointly by NATO, the CNRS, and PITP, and entirely organized by PITP.

Magnetism is a somewhat peculiar research field. It clearly has a quantum-mechanical basis the microsopic exchange interactions arise entirely from the exclusion principle, in conjunction with respulsive interactions between electrons. And yet until recently the vast majority of magnetism researchers and users of magnetic phenomena around the world paid no attention to these quantum-mechanical roots. Thus, eg., the huge ($400 billion per annum) industry which manufactures hard discs, and other components in the information technology sector, depends entirely on room-temperature properties of magnets - yet at the macroscopic or mesoscopic scales of interest to this industry, room-temperature magnets behave entirely classically.

This situation has now begun to change, and the quantum collective properties of magnetic systems, for so long of interest only to a few, have begun to move to centre stage. There are several reasons for this. One is the increasing use of low temperatures in industrial and applied research labs, and the recognition that the low-T properties of many new magnetic materials are of great potential use in future devices. Another is the emergence of nanoscience, and its offshoot nanotechnology, as an important new discipline the majority of high-tech applications of nanotechnology so far envisaged will also be low-temperature ones. All this has meant that collective quantum phenomena, occurring at low T in quantum dots, magnetic molecules, and nanoscopic conductors, have suddenly become interesting to more than just pure physics researchers. The design of new magnetic quantum materials, of spin-based quantum devices in low-dimensional geometries, and quantum nanomagnetic systems, using either physical or chemical techniques, has now become the concern of many applied physicists and chemists.

An interesting by-product of this broader interest in collective quantum spin phenomena has been the increasing focus, by applied physicists and even start-up companies, on some of the more exotic theoretical ideas current in quantum magnetism. These draw upon various branches of quantum field theory (including topological field theory, the theory of decoherence, and string theory), quantum computation, and upon older fields like spin glass theory and the theory of quantum phase transitions - all of which are fairly esoteric. Some of these ideas have found more application in cosmology or string theory than in condensed matter physics so that their use in designing circuit arrays for quantum information processors, or spintronic devices, may seem disconcerting to some. Yet from another point of view it simply confirms the broadly unified nature of the principles and techniques used in theoretical physics.

For the PITP/Les Houches school a number of topics of prime interest were selected, and these reflect the interests of a broad community. They were as follows: (1) Magnetism at the Microscopic Scale. (2) Exotic Order in Quantum Magnets. (3) Disordered Magnets. (4) Quantum Nanomagnetism. (5) Large-Scale Quantum Phenomena in Magnets.

All of these fields are evolving rapidly as this volume was going to press, new discoveries were being made on graphene and on the behaviour of dipolar quantum spin glasses, and physicists were digesting the discovery of room-temperature Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons in YIG films. However it is clear that the questions, issues, and techniques in these areas will be of central interest for many years to come.

For those interested in the history of magnetism, this is a good book to read.However, be forewarned that it disparages the ideas of animal magnetism and magnet therapy, so those hoping to learn more about those subjects will have to look elsewhere.Also, if you want to learn about permananet magnet motors, this is not the book for you.However, I found this a very useful book to use when explaining these latter topics, as it provides a readily available reference to use in explaining what science overlooked.

This book covers in a bit more detail the history and people involved with the discovery of magnetism and subsequent magnetic phenomena. Unfortunately it is also somewhat repetitive with topics being brought up again and again for pages at a time. It also veers off topic into cosmology, metaphysics and science policy. An editor with a strong hand would have improved this book considerably. I suggest skipping this book unless you can pick it up used for half price.

This is a most interesting read about lodestones and magnetism as told through an all inclusive historical record encompassing the evolvement of our understanding of what magnetism is. Gerrit L. Herschuur takes the reader on a dramatic discovery of everything there is or ever was to know about magnetism, from it's being a mystical lodestone with superstition as a basis of understanding, to the degree of sophisticated knowledge we have today. He has a natural talent for keeping the reader as intrigued as if he/she were holding a best selling mystery novel! The best part is, this is a non-fictional true life natural mystery and you won't be able to put this book down until you've finished it. Herschuur reveals every mystery contained within and about magnetism, all the stuff you ever wanted to know about it, but didn't know who to ask!

Hidden Attraction is a fascinating account of the study of the quite baffling phenomenon of magnetism across approximately five centuries.Verschuur constructs a smooth transition from one discoverer/pioneer to the next, allowing the reader to follow in the footsteps of the various figures discussed.

This is no boring catalog of scientists listing piecemeal contributions to the field; I personally found the book to be a page-turner.Hidden Attraction does not leave you feeling as if you could recite the names of historical figures--rather it gives you the sensation of having looked over their shoulders as they made their discoveries.Some of the scientists discussed, just to name a few, are Volta, Faraday, Hertz and Ampere.

Verschuur gives enough depth of the subject matter to keep the interest of the scientifically-minded, unlike other books on the history of science which spread the accounts of real achievements sparingly over a wasteland of historical details and background.At the same time, Verschuur includes enough background and biographical info to give the reader a sense of who each figure was both as a scientist and as a person.

Those without a strong foundation in physics may get lost in the last chapter or two--I am one of those.This, however, did not detract from the overall readability of the book.

Hidden Attraction is well worth reading for anyone who is interested in the history of science and who is excited by great scientific achievements. ... Read more

First - the disclaimer. This book was written by my undergraduate lab partner from about 20 years ago. We were not exactly friends, but I thought he was a fine person and brilliant.

The book itself is well written. It explains the subject at hand in clear terms, neither hiding in jargon nor dumbing down the subject. It is grounded in the idea that children can understand science when explained directly "from the ground up".

I bought it for my son and enjoyed reading it myself. Learning about our world through science is a joy and a right we are all heirs to. Educating our children about science is our duty to the future. Peter, thank you for helping this cause.

I use this book, along with Kleppner & Kolenkow's "Introduction to Mechanics," as the texts in a two-semester sequence of first-year physics. There are simply no equals, as both books are both explicit in teaching the required procedures to attack problems, and subtle in their discussions of the physical phenomena and laws involved. The standard texts, fine as they are what they do, simply pale in comparison.

Our course is aimed a students with strong high school calculus and physics, usually of the AP variety. With these two books there is no need for students to jump into second-year physics (often without the proper mathematical preparation); there is plenty more to learn. If you want your graduates prepared for careers in physics or related sciences, start them off here. The downside is that both books are apparently out of print, and we have to resort to (legal) reproductions that are rather expensive for those who are unable or unwilling to find a used copy on the web.

I used this textbook for my E&M class.For the most part, this book is very clear.The only drawback is that the last couple of chapters do not present E&M in materials very well.Also, make sure you are familiar with multivariable calculus (i.e. partial derivatives, gradients, multiple integrals, Stoke's theorem, etc.)

This book is really an intro to E&M but it is very dense with verbal descriptions of the physics involved. For that reason even though it seems light on equations it is fairly heavy reading.

There are plenty of diagrams and interesting situations.Rather than just throw out a few equations and work an example the author goes into great detail in describing the physics of a situation. I think it is a very useful book for that reason.

This is not the sort of text you can scan through to find an equation and then plug and chug some numbers. It requires actually reading the chapters to get the gist of what he's saying. It would be better paired with a book heavy on equations and examples and light on verbal descriptions rather than used stand alone.

The real gem in the book is the derivation of the magnetic field from Special Relativity. This is something that should be standard in E&M texts but seems to be missing in most of them. ... Read more
