Product Description
"Quantum Theory of Magnetism" is the only book that deals with the phenomenon of magnetism from the point of view of "linear response". That is, how does a magnetic material respond when excited by a magnetic field? That field may be uniform, or spatially varying, static or time dependent. Previous editions have dealt primarily with the magnetic response. This edition incorporates the resistive response of magnetic materials as well. It also includes problems to test the reader's (or student's) comprehension. The rationale for a book on magnetism is as valid today as it was when the first two editions of Quantum Theory of Magnetism were published. Magnetic phenomena continue to be discovered with deep scientific implications and novel applications. Since the Second Edition, for example, Giant Magneto Resistance (GMR) was discovered and the new field of "spintronics" is currently expanding. Not only do these phenomena rely on the concepts presented in this book, but magnetic properties are often an important clue to our understanding of new materials (e.g., high-temperature superconductors). Their magnetic properties, studied by susceptibility measurements, nuclear magnetic resonance, neutron scattering, etc. have provided insight to the superconductivity state. This updated edition offers revised emphasis on some material as a result of recent developments and includes new material, such as an entire chapter on thin film magnetic multilayers. Researchers and students once again have access to an up-to-date classic reference on magnetism, the key characteristic of many modern materials. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good overview of the subject
This is a very nice book for someone new to the field, or for someone who wants to get a broad overview of some of the newer topics in magnetism.I do wish it had more of an emphasis on statistical mechanics though, since that's absolutely critical for really understanding magnetic behavior.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is great. I recommend to anyone who needs a book to which summarizes various concepts of physics of condensed matter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of magnetism
This book is an easy to read overview of the subject. It's a good book to review the fundamentals (para/dia/ferro/anti magnetism,
exchange interaction, etc.). I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the price is a bit high, and sometimes the treatments lacks depth. ... Read more

Product Description
This book presents a phenomenological approach to the field of solid state magnetism. After introducing the basic concepts from statistical thermodynamics and electronic structure theory, the first part discusses the standard models for localized moments (Weiss, Heisenberg) and delocalized moments (Stoner). This is followed by a chapter about exchange and correlation in metals, again considering the results for the localized and delocalized limit. The book ends with a chapter about spin fluctuations, which are introduced as an alternative to the finite temperature Stoner theory. The book will be a useful reference for researchers and a valuable accompaniment to graduate courses on magnetism and magnetic materials. ... Read more

Product Description
The field of magnetism in ultrathin metallic structures is one of growing importance, from both technical and fundamental viewpoints. The rapid development of this field has generated an urgent need for a single treatment which can serve as an introduction to the field for those entering it from a diverse range of backgrounds in the physical sciences but which will also serve as a timely overview for those already working in this area. In this volume, the second of four, a very thorough discussion of the important subject of magnetic anisotropies, coupling and giant magnetoresistance is given, and the reader is introduced to RF techniques, the Surface Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect, and Mossbauer Spectroscopy techniques used to probe these properties. ... Product Description
Molecular Magnetism introduces graduates and researchers in chemistry and physics to the newly developed field of magnetism. Molecular magnetism that is based mainly on p-electrons of organic molecules contrasts strikingly with the traditional metal and rare-earth elements. This new field has proved full of possibilities and produced a variety of excellent results in magnetic phenomena as well as magnetic materials such as purely organic ferromagnets.
This monograph includes topics such as the theoretical and experimental background of molecular magnetism, mechanism of spin alignment and the molecular design and synthesis of organic and metal-organic magnetic materials. Ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic organic radical crystals and the magnetic properties of high-spin molecules, polyradicals and polymers are discussed extensively. Interesting phenomena associated with photo-induced magnets, metal clusters and metal complexes are also described. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This monograph presents a unified and coherent account of an important, focused area of rare-earth magnetism -- magnetic structures and excitations -- which both reflects the nature of the fundamental magnetic interactions and determines many of the characteristic properties of metals. The authors concentrate on the essential principles and their applications to typical examples, generally restricting the discussion to the pure elements and considering alloys and compounds only when they are instructive in illuminating particular topics. Both authors have been involved for some time in the effort that has been made in Denmark to study, both theoretically and experimentally, the magnetic structures and especially the excitations in the rare earths. This account of the subject represents the result of their experience, and it has been written in the hope that it will be useful not only to those who have a special interest in rare-earth magnetism, but also to a wider audience of physicists and condensed matter scientists interested in the techniques and achievements of modern research in magnetism. ... Product Description
Frontiers in Magnetism of Reduced Dimension Systems presents a definitive statement of our current knowledge and the state of the art in a field that has yet to achieve maturity, even though there are a number of potential applications of thin magnetic films and multilayers, such as magnetic sensors, data storage/retrieval media, actuators, etc.The book is organized into 13 chapters, each including a lecture and contributed papers on a similar subject. Five chapters deal with theoretical descriptions of electron transport phenomena, relaxation processes, nonlinear paramagnetic interactions, phase transitions and macroscopic quantum effects in magnetic films and particles. The description of different characterization techniques occupies an important place in the book. Separate chapters are dedicated to magnetic resonances (FMR, SWR, NMR), magneto-optical spectroscopy, controlling chaos, magnetoelastic phenomena and magnetic resonance force microscopy. A further chapter gives a detailed review, spread over a number of papers, of materials in current use in information storage devices. ... Read more
