Product Description
Given the highly focal role of individuals in Malaysia's government, the entries in this dictionary are imperative if one is to understand recent events. At the same time, the "Historical Dictionary of Malaysia" contains entries on the pre-colonial and colonial eras as well as the period since independence. More entries on significant persons, places and events are now included, amplified by annexes and tables. There is a thorough introduction that gives the reader general background, and a chronology to provide a visual map of events. Finally, the bibliography's extensive listings provide valuable sources of further information. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reference for Study of Malaysia
First of all, thank you to Scarecrow Press and its Asian historical dictionary series. These are superb resources.Yes, they are expensive, but for a student/scholar they are indispensable.

The main drawback of this historical dictionary is its 1993 publication. So much has happened in Malaysia and Southeast Asia since then:the "Asian Tiger" concept; the 1997 economic crisis; the Anwar crisis and subsequent Reformasi movement; thegrowth of Muslim fundamentalism and political Islam, and; Mahathir's and UMNO's flagging leadership.A new edition of this reference is imminent, and I trust it will address all of these issues.

There are a few disappointing aspects of this dictionary.First, the list of abbreviations/acronyms can be much more comprehensive. The chronology is a bit thin; there are many events in the post-colonial era, especially during the Emergency and the Indonesian Konfrontasi period that, alhtough somewhat minor, really would serve to flesh out the chronology. The maps are a big disappointment. No, this is not an historical atlas, but if the maps are to be included, they should be full-page (fold-out would be even better), full-color, better annotated, and much more detailed.Yes, such an improvement would raise the cost of the book somewhat, but if one is spending close to $50 on such a reference, a few more dollars would not be a budget-breaker.

The dictionary itself is fine, well cross-referenced.The bibliography is superior, an indispensable resource for further research. The bibliography is sub-divided into subject areas, which further aids in refining research.I am looking forward especially to the new edition's updated bibliography. The appendices and tables are also useful, albeit somewhat shallow and now dated. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A book that was relevant 25 years ago!
This book is on the political struggle of the Malaysian Aboriginal group, or 'Orang Asli', written by a group of scholars who have been conducting research on the group since 25 years ago. But the explanation on thestruggle has been constructed as simply between the politically dominantMalays and the Orang Asli minority, without explaining the critical role ofthe Chinese in the economic life of the Orang Asli. For such a group ofexcellent and experienced scholars to ignore this phenomenon is rathersurprising, to say the least. What is even more surprising is the fact thatit took one of the more illustrious editors, ie. Robert Dentan, 25 yearsafter his first book on an Orang Asli group "Semai, the non-violentpeople", to be able to say this. It is quite obvious that they havealso failed to acknowledge the fact that many Malaysian scholars have saidall this a decade or so ago. There is an obvious failure on the part of theeditors to productively and creatively use local sources written in thevernacular for the present book. This becomes a great handicap to theauthors in constructing a more in-depth analysis. Finally, where is thevoice of the suffering Orang Asli themselves? In the present post-moderntheorizing exercise, dominant in anthropology (the editor is areanthropologists, except one), the absence of the real social actors' voiceis unacceptable! ... Read more

Product Description
This book offers an in-depth and detailed analysis of the political processes that led to formation of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. It argues that the Malaysia that came into being following the amalgamation of Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak and North Borneo was a political creation whose only rationale was that it served a convergence of political and economic expediency for the departing colonial power, the Malayan leadership and the ruling party of self-governing Singapore. 'Greater Malaysia' was thus an artificial political entity, the outcome of a concatenation of interests and motives of a number of political actors in London and Southeast Asia from the 1950s to the early 1960s.The book contrasts the complicated negotiations and hard bargaining between Singapore and Malaya on the critical issues of citizenship, control of finances and the development of a common market during the lead-up to merger with the relative ease with which the North Borneo Territories were incorporated in the Federation. The haste and testing conditions in which negotiations were conducted between 1961 and 1963, often with the British facilitating the process as an 'honest broker', led to a number of unresolved compromises between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. These compromises, however, did not obviate the possibility of future difficulties, and the seeds of dissension sown by the disagreements between the two governments were to sprout into major crises during Singapore's brief history in the Federation of Malaysia. ... Excerpt: The Asian Financial Crisis was a period of financial crisis that gripped much of Asia beginning in July 1997, and raised fears of a worldwide economic meltdown due to financial contagion. The crisis started in Thailand with the financial collapse of the Thai baht caused by the decision of the Thai government to float the baht, cutting its peg to the USD, after exhaustive efforts to support it in the face of a severe financial over extension that was in part real estate driven. At the time, Thailand had acquired a burden of foreign debt that made the country effectively bankrupt even before the collapse of its currency. As the crisis spread, most of Southeast Asia and Japan saw slumping currencies, devalued stock markets and other asset prices, and a precipitous rise in private debt. Though there has been general agreement on the existence of a crisis and its consequences, what is less clear is the causes of the crisis, as well as its scope and resolution. Indonesia, South Korea and Thailand were the countries most affected by the crisis. Hong Kong, Malaysia, Laos and the Philippines were also hurt by the slump. The People's Republic of China, India, Taiwan, Singapore, Brunei and Vietnam were less affected, although all suffered from a loss of demand and confidence throughout the region. Foreign debt-to-GDP ratios rose from 100% to 167% in the four large ASEAN economies in 199396, then shot up beyond 180% during the worst of the crisis. In South Korea, the ratios rose from 13 to 21% and then as high as 40%, while the other northern Newly Industrialized Countries (NIC) fared much better. Only in Thailand and South Korea did debt service-to-exports ratios rise. Although most of...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=262233 ... Read more

Excerpt: The 2009 Perak constitutional crisis is a political dispute involving the legitimacy of the state government of Perak state in Malaysia. It began with the announcement by Barisan Nasional's Nasaruddin Hashim of his desire to cross the floor to Pakatan Rakyat. This was then followed by the re-defection of Nasaruddin to Barisan Nasional, and the declaration by three Pakatan Rakyat representatives, Deputy Speaker Hee Yit Foong, senior state Executive Council member Jamaluddin Mohd.
