5-0 out of 5 stars No more living out of the Till!!!
So apparently, living out of the Till is a BAD idea! Who knew. It may be a buzz kill to learn that you have less money than you think you do, but then again, no one ever went bankrupt because they DIDN'T buy that new boat. Great book. Great information!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book
The Financial Management 101 book has been a good book of reference. When I need to be sure of what should be debited or credited, I used this book for reference. It also helps me to keep good business sense in perspective and in its rightful place.I also have the bookkeeping resource book as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS ALERT
This is a fantastic book - so much cheaper than spending the money for an accountant to explain all to you. The book is easy to read and understand even for a dummy like me just setting up a business.Just like her other book ("Bookkeeper's Boot Camp"), the case studies keep the information from being too dry and helps explain in layman's terms what each chapter is teaching. More books in this series please !!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great info but not for dummies
I've tried reading this book several times and can only get to chapter 3 without getting completely confused. It is NOT written from the perspective of a new small business owner that has no experience with finances. The examples used are from large company perspectives and the terminology is confusing.I am a college graduate and have worked with finances of a large company as well as my own personal finances so I'm not a financial dummy. It even discusses how "your hired book keeper should be providing you with profit/loss reports on a monthly basis so you can make sure your company is on the right track".Most start up companies owners do their own book keeping so it should show the owner how to do the book keeping in the first place (and what off the shelf products are good for doing that) before assuming they have hired help for that yet.
It does have an index for the terminology and it does have a lot of examples - just really hard to understand how it relates to a start up business with much less than what they show in the examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book for dummies-Financial management for small business
Very satisfied with this transaction.Quick shipping.Quality product .Would certainly consider buying from seller again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers the basics well
This is a great book for anyone who's thinking about starting their own business. It covers the financial management aspect of business.

The lessons are all foundational. Every one needs to build their business on some core foundations and this book provides them.

The financial tools like cashflow, income statements and balance sheets are all covered and explained in simple English. Examples are also provided to help follow along. The tables in the examples are also available on the disc provided, easily modifiable to suit your own business.

Some readers might not like dummies book because they lack depth. This is not the case with this book. Also, if you want to learn more on certain aspect, e.g. accounting, you can always get more specialized book. The point of this book is to give readers the essentials they need to know.

This is a valuable book at an affordable price.

This book gave me hope again! I had reached a major cash flow crunch in my business where I was thinking about throwing in the towel. Reading this book gave me solid action items that I could implement immediately to manage my cash flow better and improve cash coming into my business.

As a consultant who focuses on small business cash flow, I see many businesses struggling with cash flow issues. As many business owners soon find out Profit and Cash Flow are very different creatures.

Denise O'Berry, who I first met through her popular MYOB forum, has a depth of knowledge regarding small businesses that is based on practical experience. She is not a consultant who lives in an ivory tower, but a small business owner who understands the day-to-day challenges of running a business. Her experience helping other businesses makes her a great resource for other small business owners.

This book is very practical, contains no accounting or business theory, it is perfectly suited for the small business owner looking to understand and manage cash flow. In these tight economic times, there is no more critical business skill than managing cash flow. This book is a great place to start! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs more examples
This book touches on some great areas - but can be quite vague.
It could be improved with further examples, and a straight forward description of ideas - then move into the more theoretical information.
There are a lot of details on the process/ reasoning behind the research degrees.
I have found other books to be more useful, though this is a reasonable source of information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Doing Research in Business and Management: An introduction
Concise, reader friendly, and useable. Many research method books manage to lose or confuse the reader within the first few chapters. This book deals with most of the major issues of social science research whilemaintaining a practical focus. Of particular use to research masters andPhD students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview - strongly recommended
This is an excellent book on research methods. I would recommend that any business school Ph.D. not think a second time about buying this one. An extensive literature review at the end was very useful, although some URLs mentioned are rather wimpy and no longer working.

Editorial Review

Product Description
The first edition of this book is regarded as a classic in its field. Now, in an expanded and updated version of The Art of Service's book, the authors once again present a step-by-step guide to Business Relationship Management.

In business and IT, you have to know your customer and understand how your company interacts with him or her. The current term for this is Business Relationship Management (BRM), and The BRM Handbook is the best textbook for managers on the mechanics of BRM. It's a standout in a field that's filled with squishy books that go on at length about how important BRM is, but which lack details. Ivanka Menken provides lots of factual information, real case studies, carefully considered commentary, and reasoned criteria with which to evaluate BRM best practices and strategies. You'll get a lot from her carefully researched book.

Menken devotes some of her volume to BRM background information but quickly gets to the issues that managers confronted with BRM decisions need to consider. She makes great use of bulleted lists, scorable quizzes, and checklists and templates(sections about what questions to ask relations, and why, are particularly good) that you can use right now to gauge any organization's suitability to BRM and determine how they need to change in order to get the most out of their systems.

Many CIOs today are using relationship management techniques to better integrate IT into the core business units. These skills are essential, as IT is expected to play a more prominent role in the direction of the business.

When a company matures and scales, it takes a different IT view, moving from reactive to predictive. The way to be successful is using relationship management techniques to further integrate IT into the business model.

Integrating IT into the core business unit does not occur overnight. Instead, that trust builds through a series of successful projects that shows IT can deliver value to the business. IT is rocket science, but, at the end of the day, it's also customer service, and Customer service is listening to the business and reacting accordingly.

The Business Relationship Management Handbook helps you to establish a framework for IT projects across the company and within individual business units, using relationship management practices and an investment and change management committee composed of top leaders to prioritize projects.

Menken's Comprehensive Business Relationship Management Handbook is thoroughly researched and written by experienced Service Managers, then reviewed by experts in the field. You can save hundreds of hours of research and writing by starting with prewritten documents. Covering for example BRM job descriptions, BRM Responsibilities and Skills, Service Requirements, Use of the Service Portfolio, Example Service Catalogues, 8 Steps to Developing a Service Catalogue, BRM Metrics and Reports, Service Options, Mapping Responsibilities & Requirements and much more.

Considering the increasing number of IT Professionals and their Organizations who want to be actively involved in IT Service Management, this book should do at least as well as the first edition, which is a bestseller. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars God info, but very dated
I'm teaching a graduate level Logistics class with this book. In general the information is comprehensive and the text has good readability. I knew when selecting the book that it was published in 2003 and I expected some dated information. However, there are a number of things that bother me. There is no mention in the subject index of Electronic Data Interchange, or EDI. There is also no mention of Enterprise Resource Planning, or ERP. In the discussion of product life cycle the example states that CD players are replacing turn tables as newer technology. These examples indicate to me that the book needed much more of an update back in 2003 than it was given and that the book really needs updating now.

1-0 out of 5 stars Spanish for Business and Finance (Audio CD)
I purchased the Audio version of this book and am not happy with it at all.I am fluent in conversational Spanish and wanted more knowledge in Business Spanish. The CDs go through dialogue and ask you to repeat what they say. However, none of the dialogue is translated so you don't know what it is that you're saying! The CDs did not come with any manual or guide to use to translate the dialogue. They haven't been helpful at all and I am not happy with this purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful

    Product Description
Drawing on more than twenty-five years experience consulting and training on project management in companies such as NCR, AT&T, and 3M, J. Davidson Frame updates and expands what he introduced in the first edition of The New Project Management in 1994-a set of core competencies for managerial success in a corporate climate where downsizing, outsourcing, and employee empowerment are a way of life. This new edition focuses on the hottest areas in project management today-augmenting and expanding the existing coverage of risk management and estimating, and including three all-new chapters on critical issues that did not even exist in 1994.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Holistic Formula
This book is solid. The language is not overly academic while conveying textbook type information in a semi novel type format - easy to read and thoroughly enjoyable. The book is excellent for people new to project management because it is comprehensive without being overly technical, that is, it covers a broad range of topics and ties them together to present a holistic approach to project management. For this reason it would serve well for corporate training programs. Counter to that, the book is also a "should read" for top managers - to remind them of their role in creating a sound project management environment.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good supplement
This book is a very good guide to the secondary issues of project management. The author goes into detail on topics such as managing complexity, extending projects to include operations and support, building teams with borrowed resources, resource estimation and a variety of other topics. The topics are valid, the writing is clear, but the writing style is very verbose. On the one hand, the topics are relevant only for project management professionals, but the writing style is for beginning project managers. This is a good book to read after to get your PMP certification.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for org change & reengineering projects
This second edition is a minor update to the original that was published in 1994. When the first edition was published business process reengineering was in vogue. Today we're still doing reengineering, but it goes by the moniker of "organizational change management".A rose by any other name; however, this book remains one of the only project management texts that stays focused on reengineering and organizational change projects while including traditional project planning, scheduling and control techniques.

What makes this book unique is the way the author tackles organizational politics head on, and the sage advice given to deal with it.These comprise the main theme of Part I's first three chapters, which address the business environment, how to bring order out of chaos and engaging change. The final two chapters in Part I cover risk management and customer satisfaction - two main critical success factors for any project, but are especially important in organizational change projects.

Part II starts with a chapter that is boldly titled "Acquiring Political Skills and Building Influence" and segues into another topic that most PM books sidestep: "Building Teams with Borrowed Resources".If you've ever attempted employing matrix management or virtual teams you'll appreciate the advice given in this chapter. The author also gives an excellent discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of self directed teams, which may be ideal in theory, but are not easy to achieve in practice. Chapter 8 in this part is a well written piece on project selection techniques, which reflects the author's approach that is better documented in a book that he coauthored titled "The Project Office".

The remainder of the book is focused on traditional PM techniques, including estimating, outsourcing considerations, earned value (now part of the PMI PMBOK), and project metrics.

If you are involved in organizational change projects this book is the best resource because of the way it combines organizational change management with traditional PM techniques. ... Read more

Praise for Business Continuity Management: Building an Effective Incident Management Plan

"In Business Continuity Management, Blyth has once again produced a comprehensive guide to the subject. Whether a multinational organization looking to counter the threat of global terrorism or a local business planning against loss of sensitive data, this book provides a well structured and useful guide to construction and implementation of Incident Management Plans. Blyth provides not only the theory and background to his subject but also invaluable template guidelines for many of the incidents which we all should prepare for."
Joe Pugh, Head of European Project Management, Panasonic

"Business Continuity Management: Building an Effective Management Plan very effectively details how and what a company should include in composing and executing a crisis management plan. This book is a must read for both laymen and experts alike because it itemizes the most relevant facts within silos that are comprehensive enough for the expert to find value in, yet written in a manner that a layman can derive tangible value. The incident response guidelines, broken down by the event type, provide an extremely useful tool that bring immediate value to the reader."
Robert G. Molina Jr., Global Security ManagerLyondellBasell

"For a business of any consequence to not have a business continuity plan is like a Boy Scout not having a first aid kit. Advanced preparation and planning enable a business to deal with a crisis and sooner or later every business will face a crisis of some nature. Author Michael Blyth hits the nail on the head with his well organized book that weaves together business continuity planning, incident management, and dealing with risks."
John P. Chamberlain, Executive Director ESC

"Mike Blyth has produced another book, which is thought-provoking and a clear example of the multilayered guidelines that companies should be encouraged to incorporate into their BCP. A worthy read for anyone in business, irrespective of managerial level. The business model and structure achieved will help determine the time and shape of any crisis. The individual knowledge and understanding so achieved, interlinked with a robust BCP, will determine the optimum time and cost to recover from crisis."
Stephen Ackroyd, BMI Security Manager, Middle East/Africa/Asia

"In the global economy, the guidelines presented by Michael Blyth are an essential component for doing business worldwide. He has thought of every angle. In ultra-sensitive environments like Afghanistan, his recommendations will be widely applied."

2-0 out of 5 stars OK Book Marred by Crippleware
I recently used the book in an introductory AI class.I found it short on good descriptions of the basics, and long on 'user manual' information on FuzzyTech. This was not bad in itself, but FuzzyTech is a VERY complex program and the 'trial version' on the CD will not let you save ANY files or projects. This means you have to do all your learning in one session, or start over the next day.It would have been far more useful if the company had limited the size of the project you could save.I won't use this book again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book to explore Fuzzy Logic solutions
I found this book to be a worthwhile read. I agree with the other reviewers that it covers Fuzzytech quite extensively, but a completely working version of fuzzytech ships with the book, so it is possible to follow all the examples in the book. The book triggered some good ideas for me as to how to implement fuzzy logic in the business environment. It does not try to be a very academical book, although various discussions are given to explain Fuzzy Logic. If you are prepared to use Fuzzytech as tool to play around with examples, then this is a good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you plan on learning the Fuzzytech program, you need this
As a user of the fuzzy logic program that von Altrock's company makes, I have found that this book is absolutely necessary. The truly weird thing is that Inform, the software publisher, doesn't tell you about this book, when it should be included with every Fuzzy program that they sell. The manual that is included with the program is wretchedly bad; dull, confusing, and pointless. Only worse. Once you discover this book, much of the operational confusion surrounding Fuzzytech will be cleared up. However, von Altrock cannot resist a certain measure of obscurity. NeuroFuzzy applications is direct and clear, but leaves plenty of understanding gaps between one implementation and another. Von Altrock needs to expand this text and provide a wider range of specifics and details. For instance, until very recently, Fuzzytech suffered from a limited ability to read data files. This placed the program far behind the curve of contemporary usage. This is badly needed information; how does the progam really work ? Since this is the ONLY readable volume on the subject, von Altrock and Inform would be well advised to do a more thorough job of linking theory to practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally something for practitioners
I was looking for a good technology to implement risk assessment systems and a colleague pointed me to fuzzy logic. Browsing the various books, I was flooded with mathematical theory and application notes that just claimed, fuzzy is good because it is fuzzy, and gave no hints of what was really done. Altrock's book is different. It goes right to the point and shows you all the works with examples. While the first examples are rather simplistic and only serve a didactic use, the more complicated case studies are quite useful. What is really helpful is the attached software. However, the attached CD is a bit outdated. but I was able to download an updated version of the software examples.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fuzzy logic and neurofuzzy applications in business and fina
This book has a promising blurb which lead to me buy it. I was greatly disappointed. The blurbs suggested that the book would have plenty of detailed examples for the use of fuzzy logic in business and finance. Theexamples were there, but few and far in between, without the detail thatwould have made them useful case studies. Instead the author spends almostthe entire book on one *single* fuzzy logic software called fuzzytech. Thebook is more like a manual for fuzzytech applications than it is anexposition on the use of fuzzy logic for business and finance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dated contexts but durable insights

This is one in a series of several dozen volumes that comprise the "Harvard Business Review Paperback Series." Each offers direct, convenient, and inexpensive access to the best thinking on the given subject in articles originally published by the Harvard Business School Review. I strongly recommend all of the volumes in the series. The individual titles are listed at this Web site: www.hbsp.harvard.edu. The authors of various articles are among the world's most highly regarded experts on the given subject. Each volume has been carefully edited. Supplementary commentaries are also provided in most of the volumes, as is an "About the Contributors" section that usually includes suggestions of other sources that some readers may wish to explore.

In this volume, the reader is provided with eight articles. Given when they first appeared in the HBR (1994-1999), some of the material is dated but the core concepts remain relevant. Here are some questions and comments that indicate issues the various contributors examine:

How to manage the crisis you tried to prevent? (Norman R. Augustine)

What can be an effective strategic approach to managing product recalls? (N. Craig Smith, Robert J. Thomas, and John A. Quelch)

How was Continental Airlines "saved"? (Greg Brennehan)

What to do when a key executive defects? (Anurag Sharma and Idalene F. Kesner)

How to formulate and then implement an effective media policy? (Sandi Sonnenfeld)
Note: Five experts respond to a fictitious scenario and offer their advice.

After layoffs, what to do next? (Suzy Wetlaufer)
Note: Five experts offer their advice on how to revive morale at a company in another fictional case study.

In "Leadership When There Is No One to Ask," Linda Hill and Suzy Wetlaufer interview Franco Bernabe, CEO of Eni (a large, energy-focused industrial group in Italy), who explains why he made turnaround decisions in "solitude."

In "Lincoln Electric's Harsh Lessons from International Expansion," chairman emeritus Donald F. Hastings explains how Lincoln suffered throughout the 1990s and then returned to prosperity.

Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out the recently published Harvard Business Review on Making Smarter Decisions as well as other series title in the Harvard Business Review Paperback Series such as those on Advances in Strategy, Becoming a High-Performance Manager, the Innovative Enterprise, Leadership at the Top, and Measuring Corporate Performance. Also these excellent sources which provide other perspectives on crisis management: Eric Dezenhall and John Weber's Damage Control: Why Everything You Know About Crisis Management Is Wrong, Dominic Elliot'sKey Readings in Crisis Management: System and Structures for Prevention and Recovery, Ian I. Mitroff and Gus Anagnos'Managing Crises Before They Happen: What Every Executive and Manager Needs to Know About Crisis Management, Edward Borodzicz'sRisk, Crisis and Security Management, Gerald Lewis' Organizational Crisis Management: The Human Factor, and Edward S. Devlin's Crisis Management Planning and Execution.

Oh yes, I almost forgot. Here's another excellent source published by Harvard Business School Press: Crisis Management: Mastering the Skills to Prevent Disasters (Harvard Business Essentials).

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful tool
Without having to dredge through a plethora of material to find what you're looking for, you can use it to quickly flick through for refence material, checklists and guides.

A handy tool for any workplace....

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful tool
Acquiring required skills and tools to effectively manage or mitigate crises is essential to the success of modern organizations.`Harvard Business Review on Crisis Management' is a collection eight essayspresenting new ideas and concepts on how to manage, mitigate crises andother related key issues in a rapidly changing business environment.

Some of the essays in this collection are written by leading managementconsultants and CEOs.Topics covered include; `strategic approaches toproduct recalls', `leadership', `what happens when an executive defects'and how companies can develop better media policies and plans as part ofcrisis management and preparedness.

My favorite is Norman R Augustine'sessay titled `Managing the Crisis You Tried to Prevent'.In this wellresearched essay, Augustine describes six stages of a crisis drawinglessons from several well-known crises. The important issue emerging isthat "almost every crisis contains within itself' the seeds of failures aswell as the "roots of failure."Drawing quotations from Shakespeare andOscar Wilde, the author provides very useful insights into understanding, managing and preventing a crisis.
