Good not excellent
Comprehensive, but not definitive.
Pleasant Overview of Business Continuity Management BCM is presented as an all-encompassing "way of life", ensuring that a business can survive a disaster and bounce back to its pre-disaster profit level, and the tasks and information that is required to ensure proper diagnosis, prescription and maintenance of a business. As one of the authors put it - "Do we gamble with failure or hedge against it". Although presented as a collection of 20 articles it is seamlessly organized that the information did not appear redundant. After which Case studies are presented on major disasters that happened to corporations in America, most notably 9/11. Considering the scope of BCP/BCM (Business Continuity Planning) endeavour, the market for its implementation within Malaysia is limited to listed companies that can afford the methodology preached. Plus, Asian cultures abhor having outsiders prodding through every nook and cranny of their business process and resource points, isolating weaknesses and identifying exposure and making sure that the business is resilient enough to withstand a collapse of its major infrastructure. Not only that, to ensure success, key personnel from all sectors have to be identified and interactions and accountability documented with redundancies and multiple information and escalation routes introduced to ensure resiliency. At the end of the day, one would envy the consulting firm that manages such a wealth of information from any such companies, which one would assume will be sizeable enough to want BCP/BCM. What a treat indeed! On the downside, as expected with books that compiles articles, the depth of the information presented is quite shallow, but fortunately for a person like myself that are new to the subject, it's quite a readable experience as that is exactly what I am looking for. It provides enough pieces to the puzzle for me to proceed with my r&d activities.
Practical BCM at last! The book outlinessome important lessons: - The Importance of business continuitymanagement - Business continuity plans should be based on outcomescenarios and not causes - The need for an organizeddevelopment/implementation - BCM is never complete - amendments andtesting will always be required There are a couple of points to notethough: - It fails to deliver the message clearly that BusinessContinuity Management is an umbrella for business impact analysis, riskmanagement and business continuity planning. Too many people justconcentrate on the latter. - My experience shows that many advantages aregained through the development of the plan when the business continuity isfirmly in the minds of those involved and the management sponsors(whohave allocated resources and funds). This is as important as the planitself. - Unlike chapter 15 (Developing the written plan), Chapter 18(Selecting tools to support the process) is an example of where the booksits on a fence. It describes the types of tools required but gives noclear examples of data used. There are numerous examples that could havebeen used to illustrate this; perhaps this leaves the door open forconsultancy opportunities! - Another downside to the book occurs as earlyas section one, which is described as an executive overview and is 75 pageslong! Notwithstanding these minor grumbles, I would wholeheartedlyrecommend this book to anyone involved in BCM or anyone thinking aboutcreating a more secure business. ... Read more |

Adapt or Perish
Good book! Just don't buy the eBook copy!
Very good, and in addition.
A positive goldmine In the nicest possible sense, this book isn't exactly what the title claims. All to often discussions of change management tend to concentrate on the people side of things and ignore the less glamerous topics such as re-tooling, revised administrative and reporting procedures and so on. And now, on with the review: One of the ways I judge a book like this is by the number of highlights I've made (makes it so much easier to refer back to the key points). NOT here, though. Without a hint of exaggeration I found numerous points worth highlighting in every one of the eight reprinted articles. Of course this is not entirely surprising given the list of contributors, which includes such "leaders of the pack" as John Cotter ("Leading Change"), Richard Pascale and Anthony Athos ("The Reinvention Roller Coaster"), and Jerry Porras (Building Your Company's Vision"). I'd also like to commend the article "Managing Change : The Art of Balancing", by Jeanie Daniel Duck, (which ended up with highlighting on nearly every page!). So, whilst the material is not exactly new (the various items appeared in the Harvard Business Review between 1992 and 1998), I'd suggest this well-chosen set of articles is as important now as when the articles were first published.
Tight, Concise and Has Executive Summaries There are articles from such leading authorities on change management as John Kotter (Leading Change), Paul Strebel, and more. Each article opens with an executive summary, helping you decide if you want to tackle that article then and there, or move on to another that fits your interests of the moment. Sooner or later, change is about people altering the status quo, and those in charge often turn a blind eye to the fact that leadership is singularly the most important issue when an organization has to implement major changes. This is followed closely by teamwork, of which there won't be any without leadership. Inside the covers you'll find the collected knowledge, opinions and counsel of those executives and consultants who have dealt with change at all levels. If your schedule doesn't permit you to leisurely meander through hundreds of pages to find a few workable ideas upon which to build some change solutions, then this collection should be highly recommended for you. ...
