Excerpt: The 2009 Red River flood along the Red River of the North in North Dakota and Minnesota in the United States and Manitoba in Canada brought record flood levels to the Fargo-Moorhead area. The flood is a result of saturated and frozen ground, Spring snowmelt exacerbated by additional rain and snow storms, and virtually flat terrain. Communities along the Red River prepared for more than a week as the U.S. National Weather Service continuously updated the predictions for the city of Fargo, North Dakota with an increasingly higher projected river crest. Originally predicted to reach a level of near 43 feet (13 m) at Fargo by March 29, the river in fact crested at 40.82 feet (12.44 m) at 12:15 a.m. March 28, and started a slow decline. The river continued to rise to the north as the crest moved downstream. The Red River flows from the United States into Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. Unlike the vast majority of rivers in the United States, it flows northward, which means melting snow and river ice, as well as runoff from its tributaries, often create ice dams, which cause the river to overflow. The valley is essentially flat, leading to overland flooding, with no high ground on which to take refuge. Ground which was already saturated when it froze at the onset of winter, melting snow which could not be absorbed by the frozen ground, and additional precipitation from high winter snow fall, a rain storm on March 22 and a later snowstorm, high temperature snow melt rate, are reasons for the serious flooding. A low-pressure area caused the rain storm on March 22 and by March 25 a total of 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10 inches) fell in the Winnipeg area, and 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 inches) in southern Manitoba. In northeastern North Dakota and northwestern M... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22058185 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible series
Draugr is the first published novel by Arthur Slade. It was the 7th novel he wrote. It is set in a small town in Manitoba, with three American teenagers visiting their grandfather. The first night of their visit their grandfather tells them ghost stories and tales from his homeland, Iceland. The next day the three youngsters Sarah, Michael and Angie have a very strange encounter; it is almost as if their grandfather's tales are starting to come true. And as the old saying goes 'truth is stranger than fiction'. Soon they find themselves experiencing things that should not be possible but are really happening. In less than 3 days they have a life-changing experience.

The three teenagers are supposed to be visiting for 2 weeks but on their second day there, they are told their grandfather has unfinished business and they will be going home the next day. But the house is attacked that night and their grandfather goes missing. Soon Sarah must summon strength and courage she did not know she had; she will have to defy adults she respects and risk her life to save those who are closest to her. This is a story that has an open grave, strange legends, beasts walking the night, and maybe a Draugr, a dead man walking again. It is both frightening and wonderful.

This story is wonderfully written, like ghost stories told around the campfire, but with a depth of details and great characters. The readers find themselves wrapped in a talk at once both exciting and addictive. You will not be able to put the book down. Considering it is Slade's first published novel, it has a level of polish and skill rarely seen in an author's early works. It is an incredible story.

There are three books in the Northern Frights series by Arthur Slade and they are some of his earliest published works, each story based on Norse mythology. They were published under the name Arthur G. Slade by Orca Book Publishers. They are currently out of print, but they are really worth tracking down. They are incredible stories by a master storyteller.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for young teens.
Summer vacation with a ghost-story telling Grandpa is always filled with thrills andchills. But this year in Gimli, Manitoba, twins Michael and Angela and their cousin,Sarah, find the summer nights and sights provemore frightening than ever. Not longafter Grandpa tells a spooky mythabout an Icelandic ghost called a Draugr, the trioencounters somethingghastly in the woods. Can ghosts really come back from thedead to curetheir unrest? Sarah, Michael and Angela don't want to wait around to find out. And, just as the pieces to the mystery start to fit, Grandpatries to send themback home to the United States. Before they leaveGimli, however, a dog turns deadand Grandpa suddenly disappears.Determined to get to the bottom of the strangehappenings, Angie leadsthe others on a wild goose chase--that may just turn into aghost chase."You do have the Grettir's blood." I didn't know exactly what shewastalk about, but I nodded as if I understood. Althea looked at me upanddown..."Perhaps I've underestimated you. All of you. Maybe itwould have beenbetter if I told you the truth from the beginning."She paused for another second."Alright," she said. "I'lltell you everything I know, and you can deal with thenightmares and thepossibilities--it's a deal. But first each of you must give me your version of what happened. And don't leave out the smallest detail."Again we spokeabout seeing the little boy in the forest and about howhe had disappeared... Draugr isa wonderful book for young teens ofeither sex---a quick, but engaging read, withcompelling chapteropenings and cliffhanging endings. Arthur Slade has woven justenoughfright into the story to keep the reader sitting on the edge of theirchair, yetanxiously turning the pages. With Slade's newest book, TheLoki Wolf, soon to bereleased by Orca, readers won't have long to waitfor their next "shivers."
