4-0 out of 5 stars CMfgE preparation text.
This supplement is intended to address the content covered in the CMfgE exam. It does delve deeper into many topics that are only briefly discussed in the original FOM text, or are new topics altogether. My only criticism is the review questions are mostly qualitative in nature, and I expected this text to have more challenging quantitative problems than the FOM text.

Product Description
Whether in college or in the workplace, students and practitioners have relied on the first edition of;Fundamentals of Composites; for years to learn about the basics of composites manufacturing. Building upon the solid foundation of the first edition, this revised and expanded book describes recent advances, adding key information, case studies, and examples that will broaden your knowledge of composites materials and manufacturing methods.

The first focus of this text is on materials. Several major chapters are devoted to describing the basicmaterials that are put together to create composite structures. You'll learn about matrix properties, polyesters, epoxies, specialty and high-performance resins, thermoplastics, ceramic and metal matrix composites, reinforcements, reinforcement forms, testing and properties, design, and sandwich structures, joints, and finishing. The book simply and clearly presents the details of why composite materials behave the way they do. Thus composites designers will gain an understanding of the causes of material performance, allowing them a wider choice of materials than might otherwise be possible.

Secondly, the book describes composites manufacturing methods, providing tips for getting the bestresults that weigh the required material properties against cost and production efficiency. You'll findchapters on: the open molding of engineering and advanced composites, compression molding, resin infusion technologies, filament winding and fiber placement, pultrusion, thermoplastic molding, damage prevention and repair, factory issues, the business of composites, and composites applications. Fully illustrated, this comprehensive text and reference presents material in an easily understandable format. Many features are provided to make learning easier.

Product Description
Companies of all sizes are in a desperate race to remain competitive and profitable. Written with Lean implementers in mind, this book is designed to help companies and change agents apply the tools of Lean quickly. Much has been written about larger companies and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) that implemented the Lean techniques perfected at Toyota within the last few decades. However, less attention has been offered addressing the special needs of smaller companies, job shops, and even "Mom and Pop" shops. While acknowledging some similarities, this book points out critical and distinct differences between OEM organizations and make-to-order environments. Hybrid methods of implementation for the Lean techniques are necessary and this book helps provide such an approach. The principles of the Toyota Production system are sound and proven. They are effective in any industry and within any company. The challenge is to apply the right tool, at the right pl!ace, at the right time, while maintaining the flexibility and nimble nature required of smaller shops. The steps outlined in this text will assist your organization reach the goals you have set for yourselves in terms of Delivery performance, Quality, and Cost. Book includes a CD-ROM that contains useful training tools, examples, and samples. Instructors can adapt visuals for classes or training. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lean Manufacturing for the Small Shop's Accompanying CD Usability
SME has distributed thousands of Gary Conner's book with its accompanying CD since it was first published in 2001. Many small shop owners have voiced their satisfaction with the CD-ROM's content, stating the material is very usable for training and practical purposes.

Since publication, only four individuals have voiced problems in using the CD. The problems have revolved around the CD not running if its contents are copied onto a hard drive. This is because the PDF files, which comprise the interface, require a special plug-in along with running Acrobat Reader(R) from the CD. The CD is designed to autorun. If you purchase the book and have problems running the CD, the collection of example files (comprised of Powerpoint[R] and Word[R] documents) can be easily accessed by viewing the CD's contents in Internet Explorer(R). The directory is X:\LeanSmallShopCD\LMS\LMSS\EXAMPLES (where X is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive). This directory may be copied to a hard drive and is functional. Simply double click on a file name and it will open in its native program (Powerpoint or Word).

1-0 out of 5 stars Another DISTRACTION in the Pursuit of Understanding LEAN
I am astonished that this publication would be recognized by the Shingo Prize Committee. I was originally optimistic about the contents based on the title. FOOLED AGAIN! The book is simply a collection of QUALITY based analysis and improvement tools, a few "war stories" and a very general discussion of LEAN tools and systems. [...] I have been a Lean Practitioner for over twenty years and have had the privilege of learning from some of the original teachers of Lean in the United States. "Lean for the Small Shop" is another of the flurry of textbooks recently published that offer very little in the way of useful information about how to successfully design and build a lean production system. Small shops really do need a simple and useful guide for understanding and implementing a lean system... "Lean for the Small Shop" is NOT that guide. If you are a company owner or President, I would recommend you start with "The Toyota Way" (the most enjoyable to read), "Lean Transformation" by Bruce A. Henderson or "Leading the Lean Initiative" by John W. Davis. If you are the "Lean Champion" in your company, read "Lean Production Simplified" by Pascal Dennis (the BEST introductory text that exists today) or "Running Today's Factory" as an introduction. The series of shopfloor guides by Productivity Press is also helpful for your first "baby steps". Beyond that, find a real lean "sensei". A great place to find one is at your state's "MEP" (Manufacturing Extension Partnership) Center.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jerome Cook is Wrong!
First, let me say that Connor's book and files are great. My only complaint is with SME and their "user-hostle" CDR. For Jerome Cook to say that someone else didn't have problems, because HE didn't have problems is rediculous.

When I loaded the CD, I was presented with an Adobe Reader 4.0 installation screen. Since I already had Adobe Reader 5.1 on my machine, and since I knew that loading an older program over a newer program can cause all sorts of agravation, I refused to accept the install. It then kicked me out.

The next step was uninstalling Reader 5.1, loading the CD, and accepting the Adobe 4.0 software. At last I could access the files and all the SME promotional material, but only thru Adobe's Download software (sort of like the boy scout helping the little old lady across the street, when she didn't want to go).

A little snooping on the CDR, and I found all the Connor files under "E:\LMS\LMSS\Example". Now, I could download them to my hard drive, and use them as the author intended. Last, I went to Adobe, and downloaded the new Reader 6.0. Should I send SME a bill for the 1/2 hour I wasted getting around their "helpful" system?

Get the book, you won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars 2002 Shingo Prize Winner !

Product Description
As customers and shareholders demand better products faster, more pressure is felt by technical professionals to develop it now and develop it right the first time. Considered the breakthrough design and inventive problem-solving approach of the past 100 years, TRIZ is a unique, algorithmic approach to problem solving that allows engineers, planners and managers to formulate the best possible solutions for technical systems problems and predict future product needs based on technology evolution and competitive advantages. Developed in Russia, the popularity of TRIZ is now spreading to Europe, the United States, and Japan, but until now no comprehensive, comprehensible treatment of the topic has been available in English.Simplified TRIZ: New Problem Solving Applications for Engineers and Manufacturing Professionals not only demystifies TRIZ, but it also shows how it can be used in new ways to enhance Six Sigma, Constraints Management, Supply Chain Management, QFD, and Taguchi methods to gain innovative and technological competitive advantages. This practical how-to guide teaches you how to solve problems creatively, and more importantly, shows you how to find and foresee the evolution of problems in the future. It provides many exercises, worksheets, and tables to further illustrate the concepts of this multinational method. Implement the same problem-solving tool that many Fortune 500 companies are already using with Simplified TRIZ. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Simplistic description - poorly written
The method itself is extremely interesting, unfortunately the authors repeat the same examples over and over again. Very annoying. The style borders on boring. I would recommend definitely reading the book from Savransky as a much better example of TRIZ

5-0 out of 5 stars THE textbook for basic TRIZ education
Simplified TRIZ provides the theoretical foundation for the beginner to learn the practical application of the TRIZ methodology. Domb and Rantanen present a cohesive and structured breakdown of the basic components of TRIZ: the Ideal Final Result and Ideality, Contradiction Theory, Resources, and the Patterns of Evolution. The book's importance is such that I use it as a supporting text for my basic TRIZ curriculum. The students find it easy to understand as well as demonstrative enough to teach application.

Dr. Domb's credibility (international TRIZ evangelist and editor of the TRIZ Journal, www.triz-journal.com) in the quality and innovation communities is such that this book MUST be studied if you are serious about TRIZ.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
I found the book very interesting, even if I was not able to apply it to real problems we face yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant model of problem solving
Using a perfect model, this books first introduces characteristics of GOOD solutions, then step by step, it describes triz problem solving tools (and strategy development tools as well) all integrated into each other.

2-0 out of 5 stars Contains great things and totally wrong things in one book
Lean Manufacturing Systems and Cell Design by Black and Hunter is an interesting book because of it's brillant insights usually followed by totally wrong statements.

Given the title I assumed the book had to do with Lean Manufacturing but the authors never refer to the 7 or 8 wastes, or other tenets of Lean. They have observed some very good, lean, systems and have some very good observations about cells but they also confuse takt time with cycle time (very different things); they mix the terms cell and cellular even though they are two different things; they seem to think 5S is about hosekeeping (which is an outcome of 5S, not the purpose); they call kanban a buffering system and insist buffers are necessary (buffers keep product moving but they slow down problem solving); they use the term chaku-chaku but they incorrectly describe it which causes me to believe they do not know what it is; and many other errors in what Lean is; what cellular manufacturing is; and how to create them.

I can not recommend this book because it has too many errors to be safely used to create improvement and that is a shame because it does have some observations and statements that are correct and rarely printed.

Product Description
Process capability continues to receive a great deal of attention from practitioners and researchers alike. Since Sullivan introduced the concept to North America, the focus on process capability is due in part to the changing philosophy in Quality Assurance. Slogans such as 'doing things right the first time' and 'building a quality product' are terrific motivators, however if a process is not capable of meeting requirements, resources will be wasted. For example, if a mechanical process is not capable, the operators, regardless of their dedication and effort, will be unable to produce a quality product. Similarly if the operators are not capable of meeting the demands of the machinery, a quality product will not result. Processes that are not capable, regardless of their incapacity, waste resources. The goal of the book is to illustrate use of the most common process capability indices with the sincere hope that it will foster the safe use and development of PCIs among practitioners and researchers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Oldie but goodie
The Fourth Edition of "Fundamentals of Tool Design" is a revision of a book originally published in 1962. There is a chapter dealing with the many ways computers are being used in the field as well as some treatment of GD&T principals. Both new topics are "added on" and not well integrated.

This is a handbook that can also be used as a textbook. In textbook fashion each chapter has a Q&A section at the end. Subjects covered are quite comprehensive and that means that few if any persons are likely to use all of this information. This book remains true to its name by doing a thorough job on the fundamental concepts. That is not to say there is no meat in the book. Chapter 4 covers Workholding Principles in about 100 pages and is well worth reviewing even by experienced persons. There are very useful tables throughout the book that can be used to do the problems at the end of chapter. Any serious tool designer will want to get a "Machinery's Handbook" or other comprehensive and up-to-date reference for feeds, speeds, and material properties. There has to be a drawing, photo, or illustration for every one of it's 750+ pages, maybe more than one per page.
Some of the main chapters include: Workholding Principles, Jig Design, Fixture Design, Design of Pressworking Tools, and Bending, Forming, Drawing, and Forging Dies. To round out this wide variety of topics there are chapters covering machining fundamentals, inspection and welding fixtures, and considerations for new CNC techniques.

It is reasonable to expect that a person with some shop skills could read this book and design simple jigs and fixtures. It is probably not reasonable to expect a person to design a sheet metal stamping die or forging die after studying this book. You would be able to understand all the major parts of a sheet metal die and be able to buy a die more intelligently. There is also a good deal of information useful to the product designer who needs to know what the limits of the manufacturing processes are (e.g. minimum radiuses, tolerance budgeting between parts and process, and some quick cost estimating formulas for tooling and manufacturing.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Original Rapid Prototyping Text
This book is widely considered to be the original rapid prototyping text for the relatively young RP industry. Charles Hull, Dr. Jacobs, and the other authors do a good job taking the reader through the developmentalstages of Stereolithography and give valuable insight into the systemdesign and process development of the SLA system. Other highlights includean informative chapter on SLA part accuracy, specific case studies fromearly users of the technology, and decent coverage of competingtechnologies.(circa 1991)

Some of the information is outdated due to thedevelopments in RP over the past nine years, but it is still a valuablereference tool for any student of the rapid prototyping industry. ... Read more
