Product Description
Every map is a tool, a product of human effort and creativity, that represents some aspects of our world or universe ... [This] course was powered by the belief that by exploring the mathematical ideas involved in creating and analyzing maps, students would see how mathematics could help them to understand and explain their world."

--from the Preface

Portraits of the Earth exemplifies the AMS's mission to bring the power and vitality of mathematical thought to the nonexpert. It is designed to teach students to think logically and to analyze the technical information that they so readily encounter every day.

Maps are exciting, visual tools that we encounter on a daily basis: from street maps to maps of the world accompanying news stories to geologic maps depicting the underground structure of the earth. This book explores the mathematical ideas involved in creating and analyzing maps, a topic that is rarely discussed in undergraduate courses. It is the first modern book to present the famous problem of mapping the earth in a style that is highly readable and mathematically accessible to most students. Feeman's writing is inviting to the novice, yet also interesting to readers with more mathematical experience. Through the visual context of maps and mapmaking, students will see how contemporary mathematics can help them to understand and explain the world.

Topics explored are the shape and size of the earth, basic spherical geometry, and why one can't make a perfect flat map of the planet. The author discusses different attributes that maps can have and determines mathematically how to design maps that have the desired features. The distortions that arise in making world maps are quantitatively analyzed. There is an in-depth discussion on the design of numerous map projections--both historical and contemporary--as well as conformal and equal-area maps. Feeman looks at how basic map designs can be modified to produce maps with any center, and he indicates how to generalize methods to produce maps of arbitrary surfaces of revolution. Also included are end-of-chapter exercises and laboratory projects. Particularly interesting is a chapter that explains how to use Maple® add-on software to make maps from geographic data points.

This book would make an excellent text for a basic undergraduate mathematics or geography course and would be especially appealing to the teacher who is interested in exciting visual applications in the classroom. It would also serve nicely as supplementary reading for a course in calculus, linear algebra, or differential geometry. Prerequisites include a solid grasp of trigonometry and basic calculus. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
John Sorenson doesn't make wild speculations in this book - he simply breaks down the information available in the Book of Mormon and, along with common sense, lays out how populations, geography, waterways and people all impacted on the events in the Book of Mormon.

This book has definitely increased my understanding of and appreciation for the Book of Mormon - it's well worth a look.

5-0 out of 5 stars The geography of the Book of Mormon
John L Sorenson is one of the best Book of Mormon scholars, having written seveal excellent texts, such as "An ancient American setting for the Book of Mormon" and "Images of Ancient America."

In this text, Sorenson re-constructs the internal geography of the Book of Mormon. He shows clearly that the Book of Mormon occured in a rather limited geographical scope, in the order of a few hundred miles or so, and that the LDS Church has no official position on the Book of Mormon's geography.

This text is one any seroius Book of Mormon student should purchase, as it presents, with little bias (Sorenson is a staunch defender of a Limited Geographical Model for Book of Mormon events), revealing the geography based on internal details in the volume.

As an aside, one reviewer wrote the following -

"This is so typical of the Mormons, that when there is no evidence then invent them. So true in the spirit of the Anti-Christ Joseph Smith is to be as imaginative as possible and when proven wrong; deny it, blatantly lie and distort true fact."

This reveals that anti-Mormons do not actually read texts by Mormon scholars, but just dismiss them out of hand. After all, had Mr. Sutinen *read* "Mormon's Map," he would have realised that no evidence is presented in favour of the Book of Mormon. Just a presentation of the internal grography of the volume. Furthermore, where and how did Sorenson "blantantly lie and distort true fact"?

Notwithstanding the inanity of those who know nothing about "Mormonism" and the Book of Mormon, "Mormon's Map" is a must-read for those interested in the geography of Book of Mormon events.

I welcome feedback at Robert.S.Boylan@nuim.ie

5-0 out of 5 stars Good summary -- exactly what it claims to be
The book is exactly what it claims to be--a detailed construction of a map which is consistent with the internal geography presented in the Book of Mormon. The author states his bias and assumptions up front, then explores relevant textual references from the Book of Mormon, and then draws conclusions.Since the process is all spelled out plainly, the reader is free to agree or draw their own conclusions.

The book includes several smaller black-and-white maps within the text that highlight probable paths taken by various groups, etc. Also the front and back inside covers present the overall map in color.

There is no attempt to place the geography in any particular area--it is simply a reconstruction based on the statements in the Book of Mormon.Because of this we can dispense with all of the tortured logic so commonly encountered when a researcher attempts to "fit" the Book of Mormon account to a particular archaeological area.

Primary considerations in the text include a) major physical features, b) relative elevations, and c) distances and directions.Putting it all together makes for a fairly compelling case that the author has it more or less right.

5-0 out of 5 stars X Marks the Spot
This is the most important book to appear on the Book of Mormon in several years, one that I enjoyed reading tremendously.

Sorenson, as an apologist for the historicity of the Book of Mormon, has worked for yearsattempting to place the events reported in the Book of Mormon in an ancientAmerican setting. This new and attractive book, however, goes beyondpolemics.

Sorenson recreates from the Book of Mormon itself, virtuallywithout regard to any real world setting, the "internal"geography of the Book of Mormon in a reader-friendly style. He demonstratesthat the internal geography of the Book of Mormon is remarkably complex andconsistent. Reading his book was similar to being handed a map ofYoknapatapha County, Middle Earth, or Narnia with the resultant clarity itbrings to the works of Faulkner, Tolkein and Lewis. Sorenson's new bookillustrates (literally!) from an unusual angle the literary sophisticationof the Book of Mormon. Regardless of your belief in the Book of Mormon ashistory, scripture or 19th Century American fiction, this is necessaryreading for any student of the Book of Mormon. I highly recommend it. ... Product Description
David Rumsey's collection of historical maps is one of the largest and most complete of its kind. Focused for the most part on North and South America in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the collection is comprised of more than 150,000 items: maps, atlases, and contextual supporting documents. Unlike similar collections, the delicacy and rarity of which necessitate careful storage and restricted use policies, The Rumsey Collection is available in its entirety on the Web and it is this conjunction of old and new technologies that is the heart of Cartographica Extraordinaire.

The maps selected for Cartographica Extraordinaire tell a hundred distinct, exciting, important, and sometimes controversial stories, along two main paths of inquiry: how did a continental wilderness become a civilization, and how has the development of cartographic science changed the ways we perceive, describe, study, and use that land?Geographic information systems have come, as part of the digital revolution, to dominate the cartography of today, but GIS didn't leap into being out of nowhere; all its processes and capabilities have precursors in historical maps. Old maps can therefore tell us not only the stories of their subject matter, but stories about the nature of mapmaking as well: its exigencies and limitations, trends and developments-its theory and practice and what that tells us about the people we were, are, and will be. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.
David Rumsey, Cartographica Extraordinaire: The Historical Map Transformed (ESRI, 2004)

This massive coffee table book is all about maps (mostly of the United States, with a few from other parts of North America thrown in for good measure) and how they change over time, not only as people discover more about the world they live in, but as progress takes its toll, measuring tools improve, etc. Simply put, it's fascinating. Rumsey's stated goal, both with this book and with his website, is to bring historical maps back into prominence as tools to understand history and change, and this is certainly a fine start. The writing (there isn't much, but what there is is always on point) is engaging, the maps are fascinating, and the book itself is quite nicely put together; given its size, I'd have expected some binding defects or the like. A wonderful piece of work, worth every penny. I wish it had gone into a little greater detail in some of the framing text, but that's hardly something to quibble over in a project of this magnitude. ****

5-0 out of 5 stars map lovers, look out!
this is truly an extraordinary book, with excellent reproductions of all types of maps. the index provides the original map dimensions, which i found helpful. this book would be a great additional to any library, young or old.

5-0 out of 5 stars History Through Illuminating Maps
David Rumsey was fascinated by maps as a kid, and they were always papered onto the walls of his room. The fascination with maps did not leave him, through several degrees in fine art and a career in real estate. He amassed one of the largest private collections of maps, The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection, 150,000 catalogued items stored on the ground floor of his house in San Francisco, which is a working library for people to use.The items are wall maps, folding maps, globes, map puzzles, and many others. There is a sampling of the collection in _Cartographica Extraordinaire: The Historical Map Transformed_ (ESRI Press) by David Rumsey and Edith M. Punt, a slim but large-paged, handsome volume containing all kinds of maps concentrating on North America. They show the history of America, to be sure, but are also a history of mapmaking.Rumsey has painstakingly put items in his collection on the Internet, so he himself is participating in mapmaking history, and some pages of this beautiful book demonstrate what can be done with maps transformed into pixels.

Looking at these lovely maps is to participate a bit in Rumsey's enthusiasm, which one can pick up from his introduction: "A map, especially a historical map, ... communicates both above and below the narrow bands of language and observation."There are only a hundred and twenty or so maps selected here, but besides being beautiful objects to contemplate, they show an amazingly diverse range of ideas: how people explored coasts, or how train schedules were arranged before we had standard time zones, or how we claimed, organized, and sold the land. For those of us who only look at highway maps, there is an enormous education here.It is barely possible to mention the subjects of some of these maps; if this subject matter at all interests you, nothing will do except to get the book itself and look through the pages. For instance, the map by William Clark (of Lewis and Clark) of the trek across western America is here, but in a version issued by Rumsey in celebration of the 200th anniversary of their travels. It shows the original drawing, seamlessly enclosed within the General Land Survey's first map of the area, which is itself within a 1971 map of a US Geographic Survey National Atlas, which in turn is within a Landsat mosaic from NASA.The joins of the maps are seamless because they all were turned into computer data that could be massaged in just the right way, and because they are "georectified" to match up perfectly. This was hardest to do with Clark's 1814 map, which because of survey and navigation limitations of his time (not because of sloppy mapmaking) had accurate latitudes and distorted longitudes.

Rumsey's collection exists physically, of course, but access to the historical maps entailed the basic problem of "many hands taking hold of rare and delicate objects."Digital photography and computer storage have opened his collection for anyone who wants to look, and you don't even have to be there physically. He has found that magnified images of the maps can show details that were obscure even in the originals.Astonishingly, information compression has meant that a picture that originally required 400 megabytes can actually be stored in 3% of that size without loss of image quality.By digitizing his maps and making them available, Rumsey has himself stepped into cartographic history. This book is a demonstration in book form of what Geographic Information Systems can do, and Rumsey sees the "digital wizardry of GIS not as a break from the past and old mapping traditions," but part of those traditions. If you go to the website, you can look around anywhere; there is no guide._Cartographica Extraordinaire_, on the other hand, has the job of demonstrating the progress of history and of information display, and does both engagingly and handsomely.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding and representative collection
The impressively collaborative work of David Rumsey (President of Cartography Associates, a San Francisco-based digital publishing company, and Director of Luna Imaging, a provider of enterprise software for online image collections) and Edith M. Punt (professional cartographer and recipient of the 1996 National Geographic Award in Cartography), Cartographica Extraordinaire: The Historical Map Transformed is a 160-page, hardcover, coffee-table book printed on archival paper which showcases how technology has literally transformed the restoration, re-creation and reproduction of historical maps. The specific focus is upon maps (and the people who made them) that reflect American history and ranges from a 1736 atlas depicting California as an island, to a Civil War era "bird's-eye" view of military positions on the southeastern seaboard. This is an outstanding and representative collection drawn from the David Rumsey Map Collection and illustrates early American history from a uniquely geographic perspective. With it's informed and informative text, Cartographica Extraordinaire is clearly recommended for inclusion into professional, academic and community library Cartography Studies or American History collections. Indeed, Cartographica Extraordinaire would make an excellent selection for a truly unique Library Memorial Fund acquisition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just extraordinary, it's amazing
At first sight, this is a gorgeous book. It exhibits historical maps made in nineteenth century America, and the reader might expect a reverential approach of the map collector that David Rumsey exemplifies. But David Rumsey is also the person who provides amazing open access to his collection through the highest tech web site. He sees maps not just as curiosities, but as a way to get inside the past. With Edith Punt, they have tied the maps into the social, environmental and technological changes that are shown. They use the most current geographic information systems technology to spark a connection to the current landscape. The old fragile maps come alive. While this book has the format and polish of your average coffee table book, this is a book to read and reread. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inheritance
Love of maps runs in my family.Maybe there is a map-gene.Or maybe that fact that my dad owned this book is what caused this love of maps to be passed on to me and my sister.

When my dad passed away, this was the one book I wanted as my inheritance.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book changed my life!
i know, sounds silly, but i picked up an old hardback of armin k. lobeck's masterpiece from a street "vendor" in new york about 15 years ago. paid 25c for it. it has influenced my perception of maps, geology, and the histories of the earth, life, and civilization ever since. it's a simple book, really, but full of concepts and ideas that you just don't get anywhere else here in the 21st century. also, the (hand drawn) illustration is unusually enlightening while exhibiting a charm and elegance that is lost on graphic designers these days.

the only reason anyone would ever go to the trouble of producing a document like this is because they were truly passionate about the ideas they were presenting. it's very sincere, and you'll never look at maps (or the world) the same way again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique
In high school we took a lot of geography, and learned about "tombolos" and "terminal moraines" and such, but damned if the teacher ever gave you an example.

This book has an interesting approach - it shows a map on one side, the text points out interesting or unusually features, and then a second page with diagram and text explains the origin of the feature.

It seems like a simple idea, but it's an approach I've seen in few other places.

Some negatives:
This is a re-print of a fairly old book, so perhaps (according to the new forword) some of the theory is a little old. I feel however, the bulk of the material is still valid, and well worth it. (It's too bad some aspiring professor somewhere does write an up-to-date book using the same approach)

The new forword doesn't add much to the book, and the publisher might better have left it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you have ever wanted to know about georaphy and geology
I haven't read the paperback, but I just came across my copy of the 1956 hard cover and devoured it with renewed interest.Professor Lobeck selects 72 examples of geography and on the facing page illustrates the geological activity that resulted in that geography.New York harbor, Long Island, the Florida peninsula, the Great Lakes, the island arcs of the Pacific and the Caribbean are among the many mapped and explained geologically.A great book for the student of earth science and the traveller interested in maps and why the our earth is so different and interesting. ... Product Description
This survey is the first of a series which attempts to illustrate the potential for a revitalized cultural geography. The author draws on theoretical developments in cultural studies and social theory and suggests new ways of approaching that concept geographically. He argues that geography is not merely incidental to cultural variation, relevant only to the explanation of diversity, but that it is fundamental to the very constitution of culture. The book employs a more expansive definition of culture than that commonly adopted in cultural geography. It looks at the cultures of socially marginal groups as well as at the dominant national culture of the elite. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the previous review: wrong book
The reviewer is reviewing Maps of Meaning: the architecture of belief, not Maps of Meaning: an introduction to cultural geography.

1-0 out of 5 stars Western Cultural bias
The author starts with a detailed and well-diagramed analysis of how humanity's ideas evolve through stages such as ritual, myths etc, beforethey finally reach religion and philosophy. Deep-rooted archetypes storevarious psychological fixations, which he shows with art from around theworld. The conclusion is in a diagram with various pictures. It shows`anxiety-threat' on one side, and this is depicted with Kali in all herdetails. On the other side of the diagram is `hope-promise' depicted by apicture of the Greco-Roman Goddess Diana. The message of several hundredpages basically boils down to the conclusion that one must rise above theevil-terror-anxiety-threat side that drives humans (i.e. the archetype ofKali) and move to the positive side depicted by Diana. This is a collegetextbook on psychology by a major publisher.

Nobody would argue with thesuggestion to move from negative to positive archetypes. But a bettermethod of illustration would have been to use another Hindu deity also asthe hope-promise archetype in the diagram. Hinduism is rather rich indeities depicting positive aspects, and there is no need to switch to thecontext of the West when depicting the positive side. The Hindu Goddess hasmillions of forms in which people have conceived of her, of which four areespecially popular: wisdom (Maheshwari), strength (Durga-Kali), harmony(Lakshmi), and perfection (Saraswati). Within the `strength' aspect, Kaliis but one of her many manifestations, Durga being another popular form. And even within Kali, there are at least three levels of worship: asterrorizer to be feared and placated is the lowest view; as Shaktiexpressing herself as the power of nature is the middle level; and at aneven higher level she is the divine power operating through the devotee. The book's author's understanding of Kali is incorrect. But even if shewere the icon of evil, it would still not justify in a textbook onpsychology to make the contrast with Diana. He should not have departedfrom Hindu symbolism when it came to explaining the positive outlook onlife. His methodology portrayed the West as the positive culture while theEast as the proverbial `world negating' burden on humanity. In fact, anyreligion could supply the author with both kinds of art, the dark side andthe light side.

If he wanted to remain in Western iconographythroughout, he could have chosen negative pictures from the holocaust, witch burning, and genocide of the Native Americans, the list of candidatesfor negative imagery being rather long. So why would a college text depictthe dark side using an Eastern tradition and the positive side usingWestern tradition, unless there is also a subliminal message intended toposition one culture better than the other. This is a case where the factsin isolation might be correct but their juxtaposition and context creates afalse impression. The effect of this psychology book might be that clinicalpsychologists will attend weekend seminars on diagnosing and treatment"Kali syndrome", as the archetype afflicting clients who suffer fromnegative conditions.

Amazingly, other colleagues of this psychologisthave been very busy appropriating the pioneering knowledge of Indicspiritualists precisely in the realm of higher states of consciousness -including Jung, Wilber, Maslow, etc. So one team of psychologists takes thecream of Indic contribution an re-labels it as their own, while the otherteam such as this book's writer, are busy enhancing the negativestereotypes about the same source tradition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Where to find your maps.
If your the adventurous type and are wondering where you can find that certain map, then this just might be the book for you. Learn where to obtain all different kinds of Land Maps such as Aerial, Agricultural, Census, CIA, Foreign, Geological, Space Imagery, Treasure, etc.. Also where to find Sky Maps, Water Maps and Map products. It is an old book, so some of the addresses may be outdated, but with the internet nowadays this book should give you a starting point on where to search for those illusive maps.

3-0 out of 5 stars Valuable information in a fragile package
This is a great collection of information about maps and charts for almost every purpose, on land or sea or in the air. Many, many kinds of maps are represented here, together with information about places to get them.

The book has a so-called "perfect binding" (signatures are glued together, not sewn). And, since the pages are very heavy because they are coated with clay in order to be glossy, sections of the book tend to pull loose from the spine. A long-lived reference work such as this one ought to be sewn together, not glued. ... Read more

Gain the skills necessary to catalog monographic sheet maps and map sets!

With an easily understood how-to format, this ready reference manual will introduce you to the basics of cataloging sheet maps on OCLC, using MARC 21 and ISBD standards and AACR2R. It will guide you through each area of the bibliographic record, focusing most specifically on the title and statement of responsibility, mathematical data, physical description, main entry, and notes areas.

Approaching the subject from the perspective that maps are not that much more difficult to catalog than monographs, this book will familiarize you with the few fields unique to map cataloging as well as the fields that are common to monographs but simply used in a different way.
