5-0 out of 5 stars Where was this book when I started out 35 years ago???
I am a life-long diver and bug catcher (i.e. spiny lobster). Most of what I have learned has been from the "Crash and Burn Institute of Technology".Well the sad thing for me is, most of the stuff I have learned over a lifetime of recreational bug catching is right here in this 2-hour read.Everything the aspiring noob would need to know before they got in the water is here- all the nuts and bolts, start to finish - finding 'em, catching 'em, cooking 'em, cautions, and on and on.It's all in the book.Everything but GPS waypoints.I bought the book to help my teenage sons come up to speed with dad, and maybe learn a thing or two myself. No regrets. My boys learned a lot by reading it (things I tried to teach them but hey, I'm just their dad - sound familiar?).I'm going to write a hate mail letter to the author for not writing it 35 years ago!Jerk! (just kidding).Get the book.Get a snare.Talk and LISTEN to locals, and pony up for more than your share of gasoline if you are sharing a boat.Good hunting, and stay safe - there's never been a fish or a bug worth dying for. Will in Sarasota

5-0 out of 5 stars the florida spiny lobster
I love hunting for lobsters but am not very good at it. sucessfull hunters are loath to share their secrets. I was looking for information on how to find florida lobsters when I found this book mentioned. amazon had it in stock and I quickly had my copy. information on florida lobsters is very spotty, as far as I know this is the only book on the subject. If you hunt the spiny lobster (or the other 2 in florida) this book is a good guide. It also has several recipes for cooking lobsters and diveing tips to use while hunting them. I found it interesting reading for the knowlege of a creature that I knew nothing about untill my first trip to the keys. ... Read more

Product Description
10 b/w photos 90 illustrations 6 x 9 Marine science for fishermen Tides, currents, fish senses and behavior Inshore and offshore fishing "Reading Dave Ross's work will give you in-depth knowledge of the ocean, its processes, and marine fish, which can only make you a better saltwater angler." -Joe Healy editor, Saltwater Fly Fishing Here at last, in layman's terms, is a fisherman's guide to the habitat and behavior of saltwater fish. The author, an oceanographer and avid fly fisherman, explains the marine environment and the factors that affect where game fish congregate, how they move with tides and currents, what they see, smell, taste, and hear. The copiously illustrated text covers inshore and offshore habitat and will prove invaluable to anyone who fishes in saltwater, whether in the surf, on the flats, or out at sea. The ocean is vast. It pays to be educated. David Ross is an oceanographer at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. He is the author of several textbooks in his field and writes the popular column "Marine Science for Fly Fishers" for Saltwater Fly Fishing magazine. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sound Integration
This book provides an excellent resource on the fundamental knowledge regarding fish behavior and the environment.A very thoughtful outline to promote your fishing arsenal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Information for the Serious Fisherman
This is very good information for the serious fisherman. If you only fish once in a great while because someone asked you to go, this may not be for you.The author gets into the ocean structure and biology of the ocean along with tides, waves, currents, and a lot of other information in the first half of this book.

The second half is full of information about fish and he ties it all in with the first half.Very good reading for those who are really into saltwater fishing whether it be from the surf, in a tidal creek, or a boat.

5-0 out of 5 stars well worth the effort it takes to read it!
Finally a book on fishing that can teach an angler something about the subject. Although it is written to a degree from the author's perspective as an ocean fly fisherman, it has a lot of really good scientific information about all aspects of fish and fishing, oceans, tides, etc. I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to, "catch rather than fish", whether he (or she) is a salt water or fresh water fisherperson. Obviously if you are the latter sort, the portions relating strictly to the ocean and estuaries will not be of much interest. But I know of no book that has given me more information nor made me so excited to try out what I learned!!! I am a life-long avid salt and fresh water angler and considered myself reasonably knowledgable until I read what Mr. Ross has to say.Granted this book takes effort to read. It is more like a text than an easy read. Frankly the first portion of the book put me into a deep slumber after an average of just 5 pages but the last half kept me awake.

I have purchased a copy for my fishing partner since I don't want to give up my copy. My wife(also nuts about fishing) will never see this book. She is already much too competitive(and lucky)! I figure that the information in this book will give me the edge I deserve.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy write to understand complicated things...
This book have the two point of view of the people involved on fisheries: practical and scientific. But the book was writed with the fisherman approach trying to explain how the ocean can change the fish behaviour. I recommend this book, one of the best on fisheries oceanography.

4-0 out of 5 stars No nonsense, serious fishing!
David Ross gets to the point with consise, informative strategies about surfcasting. The information he presents does not reek of egomania, but instead offers a variety of methods in catching the Big Kauna. It's pure fishing and a guide that is keeping me in line during these colder months. Another positive about this book was the fact that I did not feel like it was an advertising section for certain tackle or gear. The details were not overly wordy, but were easy to grasp and take out to the jetty.I recommend this book to all surfcasters - both rod and fly alike.Good fishing!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the emergence process
This is NOT a book on fishing tactics. It is a book on the emergence process of various insects. It is the only book that I've seen to describe the the actual process of the Caddisfly emergence as more than a gas bubble. I don't keep very many books. I usually resell them once I've finished reading them, but this one is a keeper. If you really want to understand how and insect emerges through the surface this is the book for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Emergers
Although "Emergers" contains some excellent introductory information for the beginner, it does not contain sufficient information on fishing emerger tactics for the advanced fly fisher.I was hoping for a book that might shed some light onemerger tactics that I was not familiar with but instead was treated to what I would call a "refresher" on fly fishing in general. It is well written and easy to understand but missed the mark relative to my needs and expectations. With these limitations in mind I would recommend this book for those fairly new to fly fishing. ... Product Description
Owing to the lapse of centuries, very little is known with certainty of the life of Hippocrates, who was called with affectionate veneration by his successors "the divine old man," and who has been justly known to posterity as "the Father of Medicine."

He was probably born about 470 B.C., and, according to all accounts, appears to have reached the advanced age of ninety years or more. He must, therefore, have lived during a period of Greek history which was characterized by great intellectual activity; for he had, as his contemporaries, Pericles the famous statesman; the poets AEschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, and Pindar; the philosopher Socrates, with his disciples Xenophon and Plato; the historians Herodotus and Thucydides; and Phidias the unrivalled sculptor.

In the island of Cos, where he was born, stood one of the most celebrated of the temples of AEsculapius, and in this temple--because he was descended from the Asclepiadae--Hippocrates inherited from his forefathers an important position. Among the Asclepiads the habit of physical observation, and even manual training in dissection, were imparted traditionally from father to son from the earliest years, thus serving as a preparation for medical practice when there were no written treatises to study.[1]

Although Hippocrates at first studied medicine under his father, he had afterwards for his teachers Gorgias and Democritus, both of classic fame, and Herodicus, who is known as the first person who applied gymnastic exercises to the cure of diseases.

The Asclepions, or temples of health, were erected in various parts of Greece as receptacles for invalids, who were in the habit of resorting to them to seek the assistance of the god. These temples were mostly situated in the neighbourhood of medicinal springs, and each devotee at his entrance was made to undergo a regular course of bathing and purification. Probably his diet was also carefully attended to, and at the same time his imagination was worked upon by music and religious ceremonies. On his departure, the restored patient usually showed his gratitude by presenting to the temple votive tablets setting forth the circumstances of his peculiar case. The value of these to men about to enter on medical studies can be readily understood; and it was to such treasures of recorded observations--collected during several generations--that Hippocrates had access from the commencement of his career.

The pictures are beautiful and the touch and feel aspect keeps my toddler very interested. He also liked the flaps that reveal hidden pictures. I am going to buy more from the same author!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pat
This is a beautiful book.My granddaughter is 20 months old and this is one of our special "read together" books. She squeals over the pictures and we have to read it over and over.

4-0 out of 5 stars My baby loves these books!
We have three of these books. The other two we have are "In the Rain Forest", and "In the Forest".The rain forest and forest ones are her favorite and she isn't even one year old yet.The only reason I gave this one 4 stars is because it doesn't seem to grasp her attention as much as her two other books.I think becuase the pictures in the other two are more lively and there is more variety in color and texture.I give a lot of credit to these books because they are the only things that can keep her still for a long period of time. They have been life savers on airplane rides.I believe they have also encouraged her early love of books.

5-0 out of 5 stars So good I bought it twice
I originally bought this for my daughter when she was about a year old.She loved it!!!In fact she read it and reread it so much that I had to throw it out about a year ago because it was so worn.I just recently bought it again (she is now 3 1/2) and she still loves it.

This is a great book for toddlers. It has bright vivid pictures and a nice story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best in series
Our sons enjoy many of Maurice Pledger's books -- and this one with AJ Wood is our favorite for its well written text to accompany the drawings.some of the other books have much weaker text, and some have animals that do not look all that different (the mammals are often very similar). This is a nice story where the little dolphin looks for his family, all the while watched over by his mother. ...
