Editorial Review

Product Description
This volume is dedicated to an in-depth discussion of the biochemical ecology of marine fishes. The authors review fish biology with regard to the environment and the world's fisheries. They show how fish can be assessed for harvesting at the best time in their life cycles and in the correct condition for marketing, freezing, and preserving. In this context, they include coverage of adaptations of fish to the environment, life cycles, and metabolism. This volume will be of interest to biochemists, marine ecologists, and fishery scientists.

Advances in Marine Biology has always offered marine biologists an in-depth and up-to-date review on a variety of topics. As well as many volumes that provide a selection of important topics, the series also includes thematic volumes that examine a particular field in detail. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Highlighting the growing importance of the sticklebacks as a model species in emerging fields such as molecular genetics, genomics, and environmental toxicology, Biology of the Three-Spined Stickleback examines data from researchers who use studies of the stickleback to address a wide range of biological issues. This state-of-the-art volume is the first comprehensive review of the biological research on this important fish in more than a decade.

The book presents current knowledge on the geographic and genetic variation of the ubiquitous three-spined stickleback and explores the possibility of any subdivision within currently recognized stickleback species. It provides a summary of important new molecular tools available, and how these tools can be used to study the genetic architecture and molecular basis of evolutionary change in different stickleback populations around the world. The book also lays out their physiology, historical factors, geographic distribution, and describes the features of their biology that seem to promote rapid speciation. It covers reproductive behavior in chronological order, and the mechanisms and selection pressures behind the activities that sticklebacks perform during the different phases of the breeding season.

Full of cutting-edge data, the book discusses the umwelt of the three-spine stickleback, with particular reference to how that world interacts with and shapes intraspecific communication during the breeding season. It covers developments in stickleback reproductive physiology from 1991 onward and summarizes studies performed — mainly within the fields of behavioral ecology and physiology — on some of the less-studied stickleback species. The book touches on the biology, in particular the behavioral ecology, of the 15-spined stickleback. Emphasizing the importance of the sticklebacks to a variety of disciplines, this book presents information that is both extensive and authoritative. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Anecdotes from one man's life.
I was with Sid Anderson on an "Adventures in Marine Biology" tour and am cited in the text. Since the book is self published one assumes there was no professional redaction. Thus the text suffers from problems of organization and redaction, which if correctly undertaken would have made the book easier to understand and follow. The small part about me obtaining data for writing my publications is incorrect and the reference to one of my papers is totally out of context. I could have easily provided Sid with the correct information. The structure of the book isdisjointed and confusing, and readers will obtain only a smattering of what the author purported to deliver. I wish Sid would have talked to his many friends, including myself, and obtained some good advice and criticism which would have made the book more intelligible. As it stands , the book delivers only a smattering of marine biology as promised by the title. The title should be something like" Memories of a families' visits to Providencia Island, Colombia". The photograph section isa terrible disappointment, since most of them are too dark to discern, again demonstrating the lack of professionalism in production of thebook. The reader will also consider Sid's poetry rather quaint. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Ever-increasing interest in oceanography and marine biology and its relevance to global environmental issues creates a demand for authoritative reviews summarizing the results of recent research. Oceanography and Marine Biology: An Annual Review has answered this demand since its founding by the late Harold Barnes more than forty years ago. Its objective is an annual consideration of basic areas of marine research, dealing with subjects of special or immediate importance, adding new subjects as they arise.

The volumes maintain a unified perspective on the marine sciences. Physical, chemical, and biological aspects of marine science are dealt with by experts actively engaged in these fields. This essential reference text for researchers and students in all fields of marine science finds a place in libraries of marine stations and institutes, as well as universities. It consistently ranks among the highest in impact factors for the marine biology category of the citation indices compiled by the Institute for Scientific Information.

Volume 43 contains analysis on cold seep sediments, unburnt coal in the marine environment, biofiltration and biofouling on artificial structures in Europe, ecology of rafting in marine ecosystems, effects of globalisation in marine environments, and much more. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
We are just beginning to discover the importance of vitamin C in the health of natural and man-made ecosystems. Synthesis of ascorbic acid is well understood, but algae as the only source of ascorbate in the aquatic food pyramid has not been explored. There is an expanding field of the culture of aquatic organisms that demand formulated feeds to best meet their requirements for health, growth, and reproduction. With over 100 species now cultured for human consumption, the question arises as to whether we have reliable information for the dietary needs for vitamin C for even a small percentage of these organisms. A comprehensive approach to the role of vitamin C at the cellular level as well as in the aquatic food chains, this book discusses growth and reproduction, disease resistance, and toxicology of aquatic organisms.Ascorbic Acid in Aquatic Organisms was written as the offshoot of a special session on aquatic organisms and practical aquaculture at the 1998 World Aquaculture Society (WAS) meeting. This book reviews the research already available and identifies new directions for research. It is a unique combination of good nutrition research, ecology, and practical aquaculture (for instance brine shrimp enrichment). This interdisciplinary volume will appeal to marine fish culturists, aquatic biologists, comparative and evolutionary cellular physiologists, and environmental toxicologists. ... Read more
