Product Description
First published in 1984, this attractively illustrated volume surveys the world of marine biology as revealed to the underwater diver. Before the invention of the aqualung it was hardly possible for biologists to make detailed ecological studies below the low tide mark. This was particularly true on rocky substrates, in kelp forests and on coral reefs. Divers have now been able to study these environments at first hand and this book is an account of what they have found. the book is divided into four parts. Part I, on rocky substrates, introduces the sublittoral animal communities and the effects of important environmental variables such as light, water movement, turbidity and interactions with other community members. Part II on kelp forests deals with the growth and production of the plants and with the interactions between plants and animals. Part III focuses on reef structure, coral growth, nutrition, biological interactions affecting the corals and aspects of the behaviour of reef fish. ... Read more

Product Description
The two themes of the Fourth European Symposium on Marine Biology, which took place in Bangor, North Wales, in September 1969, were Larval Biology and Light in the Marine Environment. Originally published in 1971, this volume of edited proceedings from the symposium gives specialist information on the behaviour and structure of larvae of animals that attach themselves to rocks, pilings, ships' hulls, etc. The biology of these organisms is important, both in relation to ship fouling and to mariculture (farming of the sea). It is the larval stage that is vitally important because this is the disseminating phase which enables the organism to find a suitable habitat. The second part of the volume is concerned with the measurement of light in the sea and its effect on the growth of marine algae, and on the behaviour and reproduction of marine animals. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
The ever increasing interest in work in oceanography and marine biology and its relevance to global environmental issues creates a demand for authoritative reviews summarising the results of recent research.Oceanography and Marine Biology: an Annual Review has catered for this demand since its foundation, by the late Harold Barnes, more than 35 years ago. Its objectives are to consider, annually, basic areas of marine research, returning to them when appropriate in future volumes; to deal with subjects of special and topical importance; and to add new ones as they arise.
The favourable reception accorded to all the volumes shows that the series is fulfilling a very real need: both reviews and sales have been gratifying. The series is an essential reference text for research workers and students in all fields of marine science and related subjects, and finds a place in not only the libraries of marine stations and institutes but also universities. It is consistently among the highest ranking impact factors for the marine biology category of the citation indices compiled by the Institute for Scientific Education. ... Read more

MBOS features paintings by Richard Ellis and Winslow Homer, photographs of tall ships rounding Cape Horn, and tales of fishes like Protopterus annectens, the African lungfish -- an obligate air-breather that will drown if its head is held underwater. It is rare among marine texts in that it covers both marine science (water chemistry, plate tectonics, salinity, pressure, tides, waves, etc.), marine ecology, as well as a phylogenetic survey of the major marine phyla. It also offers a unique and creative treatment of marine topics, including accounts of the voyages of Magellan, Columbus, and the HMS Challenger, and, among others, the contributions of Eratosthenes, Bartholomew Dias, William Dampier, and Vasco da Gama.It would be nice to see Marine Biology and Ocean Science in print once again. ... Product Description
The spotted seatrout is an important species not only for recreational and commercial fisheries, but also as an integral part of many estuarine ecosystems. As one of the few fishes that live its entire life within an estuarine system, the species has tremendous potential as a monitor or sentinel for estuarine conditions. Prepared by the foremost authorities in their respective fields, Biology of the Spotted Seatrout presents an up-to-date summary of what is known about the basic biology of this important species. This innovative reference provides current life history information on this species for the expressed purpose of beginning the task of assessing differences in estuarine restricted sub-populations of spotted seatrout. It serves as a model of a biological summary directed toward determining which of the life history parameters will most aptly serve as bioindicators to meet overall environmental management needs. It integrates estuarine specific life history features into the overall management of both estuaries and an estuarine dependent fishery.Biology of the Spotted Seatrout includes a classic systematic approach to studying the relationships between seatrout genera as well as a more modern approach to investigating intra- and inter-estuarine differences in genetic structure. Ecologists, fisheries biologists and managers, and environmental scientists worldwide will be able to use the information presented in this book as a model on which to establish a database of information to be used to assess and compare estuarine conditions and environmental health. This valuable book serves as a blueprint for bringing together the biological criteria necessary to begin landscape scale comparisons of estuaries based on the biological information of totally estuarine dependent species, such as the spotted seatrout. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Overview of Caribbean reefs and how to enjoy and protect them
This book starts off with an excellent discussion of reef formation and processes, followed by reef ecology and a general discussion of geology and weather patterns of the Caribbean. It goes on to discuss human intereactions with reefs and ways ot protect them before launcing into the main section of the book that goes island by island and country by country around the Caribbean (here taken to include the Bahamas and even Bermuda). Maps of reefs are provided that mark significant dive sites. The maps are not sufficiently detailed, for example, to tell you the best snorkeling beaches, but they give a much-appreciated view of the reef system off each shore and are accompanied by discussion of local highlights. Short histories are provided for each area, and the book is full of short box essays on sharks, algae, turtles, indigenous people, hurricanes, volcanoes, bioluminescence, and a host of other topics. The last section highlights some common reef species. Although this section is not as detailed as a typical field guide, it does cover many of the more common organisms one is likley to encounter and may save on the need to bring another book along. ... Product Description
First published in 1993, The Biology of the Southern Ocean has been referred to as international research at its best and an invaluable reference. Drawing on the considerable volume of information published in the last ten years, this second edition retains the format that made the first edition a popular bestseller, while updating the information with the latest research results available.

The book begins with a description of the physico-chemical environment and, in a logical sequence, covers phytoplankton and primary production, the sea ice microbial communities and the secondary consumers, the zooplankton. The author includes an extended chapter on the biology and ecology of Antarctic krill that highlights its central position in the Southern Ocean food web. A series of chapters consider the higher consumers, nekton (with an emphasis on cephalopods) fish, seals, whales, and seabirds. The following chapters explore selected ecosystem components; the benthic communities, life beneath the fast ice and ice shelves, recent advances in understanding decomposition processes, and the role of bacteria and protozoa.

The author synthesizes ecosystem dynamics, with an emphasis on the pelagic ecosystem. He covers resource exploitation, the impact of such exploitation on the marine ecosystem, and the problems involved in the management of the living resources. His epilogue summarizes the extent to which our understanding of the functioning of the Antarctic marine ecosystem has changed in the last 50 years; for example, there has been a dramatic change in our view of krill and its role in the Southern Ocean marine ecosystem. The book concludes with the statement that research carried out under the AGCS Programme and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) will continue to provide critical information on the functioning of Antarctic marine ecosystems.

Intended for all those with an ongoing interest in Antarctic research, conservation, and management, this volume represents one of the most authoritative resources in the field as it covers all aspects of this important marine ecosystem. ... Read more

Quantitative methods specifically tailored for the marine biologist

While there are countless texts published on quantitative methods and many texts that cover quantitative terrestrial ecology, this text fills the need for the special quantitative problems confronting marine biologists and biological oceanographers. The author combines common quantitative techniques with recent advances in quantitative methodology and then demonstrates how these techniques can be used to study marine organisms, their behaviors, and their interactions with the environment. Readers learn how to better design experiments and sampling, employ sophisticated mathematical techniques, and accurately interpret and communicate the results.

Most of this text is written at an introductory level, with a few topics that advance to more complex themes. Among the topics covered are plot/plotless sampling, biometrics, experimental design, game theory, optimization, time trends, modeling, and environmental impact assessments.

Even readers new to quantitative methods will find the material accessible, with plenty of features to engage their interest, promote learning, and put their knowledge into practice:
* One or more examples are provided to illustrate each individual quantitative technique presented in the text
* The accompanying CD-ROM features two multimedia programs, several statistical programs, help to run complex statistical programs, and additional information amplifying topics covered in the text
* References lead readers to additional information to pursue individual topics in greater depth

Quantitative Analysis of Marine Biological Communities, with its extensive use of examples, is ideal for undergraduate and graduate students in marine biology. Marine biologists, regardless of their level of experience, will also discover new approaches to quantitative analysis tailored to the particular needs of their field. ... Read more
