Modern Biotechnology could have an important impact on the scope of genetic changes that can be made to food organisms derived from aquatic sources, as well as on the range of possible sources of food. This publication presents the scientific papers given at the symposium on Aquatic Biotechnology and Food Safety held in Bergen Norway in June 1992.It sought toidentify food safety implications that might be unique to modern aquatic biotechnology. In addition, the discussion points and conclusions of the meeting of the OECD's Working Group on Food Safety and Biotechnology that followed the symposium are included. This publication therefore will be of special interest to those involved in carrying out safety evaluations of new foods or food components derived by means of modern biotechnology. ... Product Description

Despite a decades-long international moratorium on commercial whaling, one fleet has continued to hunt and kill whales in the waters surrounding Antarctica. Refusing to let this defiance go unchallenged, the environmental organization Greenpeace began dispatching expeditions to the region in an effort to intercept the whalers and use nonviolent means to stop their lethal practice.

Over the past decade, Kieran Mulvaney led four such expeditions as a campaigner and coordinator. In The Whaling Season, he recounts those voyages in all their drama, disappointments, strain, and elation, giving readers a behind-the-scenes look at the hazards and triumphs of life as an environmental activist on the high seas. The author also explores the larger struggles underlying the expeditions, drawing on the history of commercial whaling and Antarctic exploration, the development of Greenpeace, and broader scientific and political efforts to conserve marine life. He presents a rich portrait of the current struggles and makes an impassioned plea for protection of some of the world?s most spectacular creatures.

For armchair adventurers, polar enthusiasts, and anyone concerned about marine conservation and continued hunting of the world?s whales, The Whaling Season is an engrossing and informative tale of adventure set in one of the Earth?s last great wilderness areas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully worded.
Kieran Mulvaney, an author who has published an extensive list of articles on matters of science and the environment, recounts his adventures and experiences while on expedition to protect whales in this book.

After co-founding The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, (originally called The Whale Conservation Society), along with Sean Whyte, Mulvaney embarked upon a life of activism that takes him from his boyhood home typewriter to the frigid seas off Antarctica.

As a member of four different whale protection exhibitions, Mulvaney has worked for and alongside members of Greenpeace, encountering some degree of success charting frozen waters, as well as political minefields. Through it all, his mission has remained the same - to protect the whales.

An early history of the whaling industry, as well as that of Greenpeace, (originally known as the Don't Make A Wave Committee), is covered extensively. Modern day whaling practices are explained - including ways in which some countries continue to thwart the worldwide ban on whaling practices by claiming they are hunting the mammals for the purpose of science.

Written in easy to understand terms (in other words, you don't have to be a biologist to get it), this book is an entertaining and interesting read, although some readers might be offended by the frequent use of colorful language. Especially enjoyable is the passage describing the majesty of icebergs, "I pictured them building up slowly over millions and millions of years and then one day, with a violent, ear-shattering crack, breaking away from the ice shelf and setting off on their own. From that moment they were doomed, destined to erode under the steady assault from wind and waves until nothing was left. . . ancient witnesses of eons past, . . . Product Description
Every year the Mediterranean attracts more than 100 million visitors, but relatively few of them stop to think of the environmental problems facing the area. The millions of tonnes of crude oil, chemicals and untreated sewage being discharged into the sea, form a toxic cocktail that is threatening the entire marine ecosystem. Drawing on the expertise of a multi-national team of writers and researchers, this book examines the geography and unique natural history of the Mediterranean, the threat to its immense natural resources, and the politics that shape the area's future. There are special features, accompanied by landscape and wildlife photography, on each of the 18 Mediterranean states, and the book ends with a look at what has already been achieved in environmental protection and at Greenpeace's own involvement. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you want to know about the Mediterranean Sea.
And yet another book from the Greenpeace stable with an emphasis on conservation - just as it should be! Anything and everything to do with the Mediterranean Sea is included here.

There is an old saying amongst British Scuba Divers which goes; "The Med' is Dead!" In reality the Mediterranean Sea is not dead at all - although it may well have become so were it not for the efforts of Greenpeace and others.

There is no point in anyone stepping over rocks on the shores of the River Po which have been turned bright orange through many years of toxic waste flowing over them - only to go either fishing or swimming a short distance away. Once that toxicity enters the water, it then becomes embedded in the river-bed. It will also travel and pollute the entire river and continue on into the sea. In short, that pollution is there to stay and this book explains it all in great detail - and does so far better than any other book I have read on the subject.

We all know Greenpeace for their daring acts of confrontation. Why else would their flagship have been blown up by a country's official (not-so) secret service? It is, however, those daring acts which make the headlines and not the day-to-day business of collecting samples of toxic waste from this river or that pipeline. Such mundane tasks, however, are just as dangerous as, for example, placing your inflatable boats in front of the harpoons of Whaling Ships. On either assignment you "can" get killed.

Elsewhere the book explains the problems associated with the disposal of human sewerage along those stretches of popular beaches which boast 45 high-rise hotels per kilometre (just over a half mile) of beach. There are times when tourists are packed onto those beaches like Sardines in a can and each one of them will bathe. Just a short distance offshore, all the effluent from their hotels is released into that same sea. It's a nice holiday for some.

The book is expertly laid out so that the reader is able to build on the knowledge gained from what has been read so far. It is all about what Greenpeace does best - isolate and identify those areas in need of urgent protection. Packed with information supported by outstanding colour photography and diagrams, this book brings home a message loud and clear and is one that should be read by anyone who either lives in the region or is just an occasional visitor - or simply by anyone who wants to support a worthy organisation.
