5-0 out of 5 stars Appealing for kids but good intro for adults, too
This is my own (authored) book but I bought it through Amazon for a friend and so Amazon asked me to review it!I can only say that people assume that whales have been "saved" because whaling is much less than it was. Still there are thousands of whales being killed every year for various reasons (and if you include dolphins, hundreds of thousands every year). if you want to find out about what whale scientists, groups and a few governments are doing to help whales -- and at the same time to try to learn as much as we can about these fascinating social mammals -- this book will give you some insights both in terms of the state of the art photos and the stories in the text. The book is packaged for kids aged 9 to 13 but it also works well as an introduction for adults. Enjoy!

Product Description
With one of the planet's most alluring birds as his guide, America's foremost chronicler of marine life captures the embattled ocean world.

On a wingspan of up to eleven feet, the albatross can travel as far as five thousand miles without stopping. But until recently, little was known about the albatross's far-flung flights. Now, award-winning author Carl Safina takes us to the higher latitudes to explain what marine animals like the albatross can tell us about the health of our oceans.

Eye of the Albatross takes us soaring to locales where whales, sea turtles, penguins, and shearwaters flourish in their own quotidian rhythms. Safina's guide and inspiration is a bird he calls Amelia, whose life he portrays in fascinating detail. Interwoven with recollections of whalers and famous explorers, Eye of the Albatross probes the unmistakable environmental impact of the encounters between man and marine life. Though no place remains untouched by us, fishing restrictions and habitat protection have signaled positive gains for albatrosses and several other marine animals. Safina's portrait combines the authority and drama of Rachel Carson with Peter Matthiessen's perceptive skill. The result is a transforming ride to the ends of the Earth and an urgent appeal to preserve the wild oceans while there is still time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please read this book.

If you are already amazed with the animals that share our planet, your enthusiasm will be rewarded and expanded when you meet Amelia , her chick, and their neighbors on a tiny isolated island in the Hawaiian chain. If you are beginning an interest in the natural world, this is a inspiring place to begin. Pure science meets pure poetry in one wonderful read. The Eye of the Albatross is an important book, and a beautiful one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
Carl Safina possesses a rare combination of talents: he a scientist who also writes beautiful descriptive prose. He vividly captures the spirit of the ecosystems and animals that he is describing, while staying factually informative.

This is a great read. It made me appreciate the open ocean in ways that I had never considered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye of the Albatross
This is a stunning description of an even more stunning creature.Part scientist, part poet, part mystic: Carl Safina is an albatross's best friend. The reader is instantly and forevermore smitten. Read this book! You will fall in love with the world's most magnificent long-distance flyer-glider.You will not think of wind in the same way, nor gravity. You will become a more patient diligent steadfast joyous courageous human being.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - a must read!
Brilliant, poignant and often painful.A must read!Beautifully written tale of the various species of albatross, whose survival is increasingly vulnerable to modern conditions and the willingness of homo sapiens (so-called) to change their behavior so that others may live. The story is one of struggle, hope, the power of sheer persistence and of life's resilience under increasingly bleak conditions.More generally, the book is an overview of the devastation of the ocean environment."Eye of the Albatross" was the well-deserving winner of the 1993 John Burroughs Medal for distinguished natural hitory writing.

Safina's latest piece of natural history brilliance is "Voyage of the Turtle: In pursuit of the Earth's Last Dinosaur" (2006).Safina is president of Blue Ocean Institute, which he co-founded in 2003, so he's putting his prodigious talent to work to make the world a better place.

London can do it.He writes of something so large and strange as a whale and makes you want to have one as a pet. This book is touching and allows us to understand about the whale in a whole new way.

2-0 out of 5 stars Avoid for sensitive children
I personally loved this book and story and thought my 4 year old could handle the plot. She loves whales and mama/baby animal stories so I was hopeful.

It was a complete disaster. She was so worried about the daddy whale disappearing and about the mama whale fighting, etc. She was sobbing uncontrollably, and then I was too. It was just awful.

This is a girl who has never cried about any book before, and we read a ton of them of a huge range of topics.

So, just a warning if you have a sensitive youngster!

5-0 out of 5 stars The world of a baby whale
"Baby Whale's Journey" is a truly magical and beautiful book for young readers. Jonathan London's compassionate and easy-to-read text blends perfectly with the majestic illustrations by Jon Van Zyle. Together, they tell the story of a baby sperm whale's life with her marine community.

The book is full of memorable images: the adult whales protecting the baby from orcas, the mother whale battling a giant squid, and mother and baby simply frolicking in their ocean habitat. Van Zyle's illustrations (most of which stretch across two-page spreads) are superb; Van Zyle is especially adept at capturing the marvelous play of light in the water. "Baby Whale's Journey" is educational, artistically impressive, and emotionally satisfying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wondeful Story about A Mother and Baby Whale
This is a great book for children to help them learn about Sperm Whales and provides children with an insight into life below the ocean waves.I would recomend this book to teachers who are looking for a book about Ocean Animals to share with their class. This would also be a good book for a mother to read to her daughter since it talks about the mother/daughter relationship of the whales in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars James Powell knows his manatees!
James "Buddy" Powell may be the world's greatest authority on the subject of manatees, since he began studying them while he was still a teeanger in Crystal River, Fla. This book, filled with beautiful photos and his personal observations on the gentle giants, is a wonderful addition to any library. To read more about Powell's amazing life, and about the history of manatees as a Florida icon, readers should also check out Manatee Insanity: Inside the War over Florida's Most Famous Endangered Species (Florida History and Culture). Powell and other giants of manatee science are included, as are the tangled tales of how Floridians have fought over how much protection to extend to their most famous endangered species.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Children of all Ages
I bought this book so that my grandchildren (ages 4 and 5) could learn about sea turtles.I had been to see sea turtles lay eggs on the beach in Florida and had bought them an "egg to hatch." They were so interested in the process that learning about them became almost an obsession with the 5-year old!She could not seem to get enough of reading this book with me and insisted on sharing information from it with her brother and her friends. She then became interested in pollution of the oceans and was very affected by a photo of a sea turtle that had been harmed by pollution. This has made her very aware of the need to learn about her environment and keep from damaging it. Of course, she is naive enough to think that people pollute the ocean because "they just don't understand that it hurts the animals" She'll learn the truth soon enough, I'm afraid! Meanwhile, this book with its information and great pictures has turned my granddaughter into a conservation minded child.I will move on from here and help her learn about other aspects of the environment. The reading/understanding level is appropriate for children ages 4-12 depending on interest and also on how much input they get from the adults around them. Definitely a worthwhile book for your child or grandchild! ... Read more

Product Description
Coastal-Marine Conservation: Science and Policy introduces students and managers to complex conservation and management issues facing coastal nations of the world, their citizens, and international and non-governmental organizations. It aims to reduce complexity and inspire a greater consensus for more effective conservation action.

  • Presents the coastal realm as a heterogeneous, diverse ecosystem of exceptionall high biological diversity and productivity, and where conservation challenges are most difficult and urgent
  • Examines the critical issues facing coastal-marine conservation and the mechanisms for dealing with them
  • Reviews the basic science required for addressing conservation issues by presenting the coastal realm as a land-sea ecosystem of global significance, and by reviewing the natural-history features of coastal-marine organisms
  • Presents three ecologically and latitudinally distinct "real-world" case studies to create a context for understanding of regional systems, their cultures, and their conservation: the polar Bering Sea, the temperate Chesapeake Bay, and the tropical Bahamas
  • Makes apparent the ecological stresses on the coastal realm, increasing rates of ecosystem change, loss of ecosystem health, and fragmented governance
  • Synthesizes the major challenges for conservation and suggests future policy and management strategies, including ecosystem management and needs for achieving sustainability and addressing the environmental debt

This book is intended for undergraduates and graduates taking courses in coastal and marine conservation and management, as well as those actively engaged in coastal-marine conservation activities, and gives the reader a clear steer to future management approaches.
