Freshwater Biodiversity is a much underestimated component of global biodiversity, both in its diversity and in its potential to act as models for fundamental research in evolutionary biology and ecosystem studies. Freshwater organisms also reflect quality of water bodies and can thus be used to monitor changes in ecosystem health. The present book comprises a unique collection of primary research papers spanning a wide range of topics in aquatic biodiversity studies, and including a first global assessment of specific diversity of freshwater animals. The book also presents a section on the interaction between scientists and science policy managers. A target opinion paper lists priorities in aquatic biodiversity research for the next decade and several reactions from distinguished scientists discuss the relevance of these items from different points of view: fundamental ecology, taxonomy and systematics, needs of developing countries, present-day biodiversity policy at European and at global scales. It is believed that such a platform for the interaction between science and science policy is an absolute necessity for the efficient use of research budgets in the future.

This report presents an analysis of evidence of pine martens gathered from England and Wales over a 12-year period (1996-2007); this evidence mainly comprised sightings reported by naturalists, land managers and members of the public. Analysis of the data suggests that pine martens are still present in broadly the same parts of England and Wales from which they were recorded in earlier decades. There are, however, two alternative explanations for their presence: either populations are persisting mainly through reproduction, or there are no reproducing populations and persistence is maintained by the occasional escape or release of pine martens. Both viewpoints are considered in the report with the authors concluding that the persistence of evidence of pine martens in higher-occupancy vice counties is suggestive of reproduction, rather than escapes or translocations, as the primary mechanism involved in maintaining populations.Although current populations may contain some escaped or translocated pine martens, the occasional escape of captive pine martens from zoological collections, concentrated mainly to the south-east of the Severn-Humber axis, does not readily explain the persistent presence of wild pine martens to the north-west of the axis. In addition, most DNA evidence from higher-occupancy vice counties was from animals of haplotype a; a native British haplotype currently found across Scotland. Further work is underway to determine whether this haplotype was also present in historical populations in England and Wales. The long term persistence of pine martens in the 20th century and into the new millennium, at very low population densities and in sub-optimal habitat, indicates a remarkable tenacity that offers hope for the future. ... Scary, violent book! The Animals try to kill the little chameleon!
Yes the pictures are really very nice and that is why I got this book. But the story is just horrible. This cute little chameleon starts out painting his hippo friend pink so they match ( he was by a pink flower at the time). Next he makes lots of paints and all the animals come and get painted. This makes a lovely picture in a two page spread but the Lion gets mad because he can no longer recognize his dinner. Other animals also get mad about being painted. So I am thinking...TAKE A BATH!!! but instead all the animals chase the chameleon to the edge of a cliff in anger! The exact words are " the angry animals chased Chameleon to the edge of a cliff. Trembling,Chameleon closed his eyes, turned the color of the rocks, and waited." I was horrified....what kind of kids book has the main characters friends try to run him off a cliff to his doom???? This is not a good children's book!!! Who ever publishes stuff like this for children?? Did they even read until the end or just look at the pictures?Luckily it rains and the animals get washed off so they don't kill the chameleon. But really, can he ever trust any of them again?? He probably had to move.

Our four year old LOVED this story.Of the three similar books I ordered this one captured her imagination.She wanted me to read it over and over!

Wonderful and beautiful
I have many many many baby books and this is one of my favorites to read to my son. He is 3 months old and LOVES looking at the pictures. Its also fun for me to read too because its just so cute!

This is a WONDERFUL children's book. The illustrations are "fabulous" (to quote Hippo) and it is a great book for a unit an All About Me unit...the theme of appreciating who are you is carried out quite nicely!
