Opened only nine years after the Catholic academy inBoston was destroyed by nativists, Holy Cross was a pet project ofBoston's second bishop, Benedict Fenwick-a Jesuit college in the midstof Yankee New England. At first an isolated, exclusively Catholicoperation offering a seven-year humanities program, the College wasrefused a charter by the Massachusetts General Court until 1865. After1900, Holy Cross became a four-year college in the American patternand advanced to its present level by integrating important principlesof Jesuit, liberal arts education with the academic traditions of thestrongest educational region in the nation.

Utilizing the universal Jesuit Plan of Studies, the college's leadersat first stressed connections with other Jesuit institutions in aprogram that emphasized classical languages, philosophy, history,mathematics, and natural sciences. About 1900, a second era began whenthe curriculum was altered to bring Holy Cross into conformity withthe modern educational pattern: college offerings were amplified andthe prep school was dropped. During the 1960s, a third era opened. Itsqualities included coeducation, a more open curriculum, growinginvolvement of non-Jesuit faculty and administrators, the transitionto a board of lay trustees, and rising academic standards as HolyCross took its place as the foremost Jesuit school among four-yearliberal arts colleges.

A Fascinating story
Holy Cross became a college in 1843, although it had existed before that as a boys boarding school. The author has woven the story of our country into the story of Holy Cross, and the result is fascinating. Consider that the first class was half African American and half Irish Catholic, at a time when New England was quite hostile to both groups. During the Civil War, a substantial minority of the student body fought for the confederacy! Time and again, Father K weaves the story of Holy Cross within the context of New England and America.

From this gem of a college, graduates have gone on to be Rhodes scholars, win the Nobel prize, run for President, ascend to the Supreme Court, and populate the professions, professional sports, science, media, law and business with great success, all the while as "men and women for others". This is quite the story!

Anyone who attended Holy Cross or has an attachment to the College in one way or another will love this book.It provides an excellent opportunity to learn and reminisce at the same time. Father Kuzniewski's exhaustive research is well evident in this fact-filled history. I found myselfquickly becoming engrossed, and particularly enjoyed the sections whichdiscussed the motivation behind the founding of the College and thebeginning of coeducation.
