Incredible content, poor binder quality
Great book and great educator
Oversimplified BUT, he gives very little attention to how the material being processed responds to the processing.Without a better understanding of the microstructural effects -- and ensuing DEfects -- it may be too hard to troubleshoot the processes described in this book. My professor was flipping through the early chapters of this book (where the materials issues are presented) and declared them "cheesy." So, to sum up:this good book becomes great by combining it with other books/courses/professors/etc that will interject materials issues into this books discussion of the mechanical issues.
A great engineering book |

Editorial Review Product Description Microbiologically-influenced corrosion (MIC) is one of the greatest mysteries of corrosion science and engineering, due to the complexities resulting from the involvement of living things such as bacteria. Bacteria are not only able to affect our health, but are also capable of impacting upon everyday life through a wide range of industrial sectors and the economy. Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion: An Engineering Insight introduces a new approach to the basics of MIC and explains how to recognise, understand, mitigate and/or prevent this type of corrosion. Topics explored include stress corrosion cracking and microbial corrosion, the pros and cons of biocides, the involvement of magnetic bacteria in microbial corrosion, and a new interpretation of cathodic protection based on recent research in microbial environments. The material covered by Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion: An Engineering Insight will be of benefit to professional and consultant engineers in power generating, oil and gas, marine, and mining industries; as well as to researchers in the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, corrosion and mechanical engineering. Editorial Review Product Description The rapid advancement in chemical vapour deposition (CVD) technology has reached many fields of application, including thin film coating, microelectronics and communications. Chemical Vapour Deposition: An Integrated Engineering Design for Advanced Materials focuses on the application of this technology to engineering coatings and, in particular, to the manufacture of high performance materials, such as fibre reinforced ceramic composite materials, for structural applications at high temperatures. While previous discourses on CVD have had a tendency to focus solely on electronics, this book aims to provide a thorough exploration of the design and applications of advanced materials, and their manufacture in engineering. It addresses a wide range of topics related to CVD theories and applications. From physical fundamentals and principles, to optimisation of processing parameters and other current practices, this book is designed to guide readers through the development of both high performance materials and the design of CVD systems to manufacture such materials. Chemical Vapour Deposition: An Integrated Engineering Design for Advanced Materials introduces integrated design and manufacture of advanced materials to researchers, industrial practitioners, postgraduates and senior undergraduate students. It also features a large body of appendices to provide references for further study. |

Editorial Review Product Description This is the only book to cover the most recent developments in applied quantum theory and their use in modeling materials properties. It describes new approaches to modeling disordered alloys and focuses on those approaches that combine the most efficient quantum-level theories of random alloys with the most sophisticated numerical techniques. In doing so, it establishes a theoretical insight into the electronic structure of complex materials such as stainless steels, Hume-Rothery alloys and silicates. |

Editorial Review Product Description Defects in semiconductors have been studied for many years, in many cases with a view toward controlling their behaviour through various forms of defect engineering . For example, in the bulk, charging significantly affects the total concentration of defects that are available to mediate phenomena such as solid-state diffusion. Surface defects play an important role in mediating surface mass transport during high temperature processing steps such as epitaxial film deposition, diffusional smoothing in reflow, and nanostructure formation in memory device fabrication. Charged Defects in Semiconductors details the current state of knowledge regarding the properties of the ionized defects that can affect the behaviour of advanced transistors, photo-active devices, catalysts, and sensors. Features: group IV, III-V, and oxide semiconductors; intrinsic and extrinsic defects; and, point defects, as well as defect pairs, complexes and clusters. |

Editorial Review Product Description The physics of metal forming and metal removing is normally expressed using non-linear partial differential equations which can be solved using the finite element method (FEM). However, when the process parameters are uncertain and/or the physics of the process is not well understood, soft computing techniques can be used with FEM or alone to model the process. Using FEM, fuzzy set theory and neural networks as modeling tools; Modeling of Metal Forming and Machining Processes provides a complete treatment of metal forming and machining, and includes: an explanation of FEM and its application to the modeling of manufacturing processes; a discussion of the numerical difficulties of FEM; chapters on the application of soft computing techniques in this modeling process. The algorithms and solved examples included make Modeling of Metal Forming and Machining Processes of value to postgraduates, senior undergraduates, lecturers and researchers in these fields. R&D engineers and consultants for the manufacturing industry will also find it of use. |
