4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book to bring on vacation
This is a must bring when you go on vacation and just need some time to chill at the beach or at the end of a busy day, in between day and evening plans. If you happen to be interviewing in the technical fields you may run across interviewers that ask brain teasers. You'll find many of those problemsin this book. For technical interviewing this makes a good study guide. I have collected quite a few puzzle books and was never fully satisfied with any of them until I heard about the authoer and decided to pick up one his books. The puzzles are all differnt from each other, ranging from word problems to geometry problems. The solutions given are very complete and actually take up the largest emphasis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good puzzles book
I didn't expect much from a 5-dollar book, but I was pleasantly surprised. Other reviewers have already covered the quality of the book, so I won't go into those details, but I have the following suggestion for you.

Store this item in your wishlist and use it when you need a filler item to qualify for free shipping.

Highly recommend the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
While the puzzles are intriguing and thought-provoking, the solutions don't explain how the answers were reached.I was highly disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great bathroom reading!
Very nice.I like the old-fashioned approach (I think the author has been writing books like this since the 1960s) and the problems are interesting and varied; most of them you can do in your head (hence an ideal "bathroom book") but some do make you break out the pencil and paper just to double-check.Highly recommended for interested people who studied Maths to around age 18 or beyond.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for warming up your brain.
Nice collection of puzzles with varying difficulties, which do not require any special knowledge of mathematics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great buy
great, great book.i was nervous about having to learn to teach a new math program i was not familiar with but this book makes it so easy. i love the ideas, vocabulary words, simple format etc.highly recommend to any preschool teacher

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for preschool
This is a great book for someone needing more ideas/activities for preschoolers learning math concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome resource
I love this book and cannot wait to start using this in my classroom this year. One of the best resource books I have seen. It is well organized, lots of fun ideas, items needed are readily available, and very hands-on child directed.

4-0 out of 5 stars math is FUN!!!
This curriculum book is packed with fun, concrete experience with math concepts.I find the progression of concepts, with the next chapter building upon discoveries made in the previous chapter very helpful and beneficial. All of the activities utilize the manipulation of real things (leaves, pennies, buttons, water, salt...)All the materials are easy to obtain and anything that needs to be made in advance, a ring toss game for example, is quick and easy and uses houshold items, empty 2L bottles and paper plates cut into rings. Each chapter ends with a Home Connections page which can be copied and sent home to families. It outlines the concepts covered in the chapter, highlights vocabulary words and offers ways the concepts covered in the classroom can be reinforced at home. The "Using This Book" section offers a table for what ages to cover what material and for how long, wich i found slightly odd. Let your own child/children progress at a speed and to a level that is appropriate for them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Pre-K
My daughter loved this book in Pre-K, but the math she is doing in public school kindergarten is much more advanced.
I see a lot of posts from homeschooling moms and I'm shocked to read that their 6 year old children are only this far when it comes to math.
However as someone who was home schooled, I shouldn't be surprised.

4-0 out of 5 stars Big and Colorful
Fun activities with big and colorful illustrations...This book covers practically everything a Kindergarten and 1st grader will learn and should know.A great supplement tool to use at home.Out of all the activity books my five year old has, this book is the only book he will pick to do on his own. I strongly recommend this book and the "100 Words Kids Need To Read By 1st Grade". I gave this product a four, b/c some of the activities lack detailed explanations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids
My daughter , a prescholer has loved this exercises and it's the funniest way to learn math, it starts very easily and gradually goes to a difficult level. It contains some stickers, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bought for my grandaughter
My grandaughter was homeschooled for Kindergarten but will start first grade soon. She LOVED working in this book.It helped her acquire the foundation for many basic skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Colorful and Fun Workbook
I agree with the previous reviewer. We are homeschooling this year and I have bought a number of workbooks for my daughter. This is the most eye-catching of them all.

My daughter considers this book fun and I agree with her.It is well written and thought out. The graphics are highly appealling. My child is excited by this wookbook and the new words she is learning to read and write. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Builds math intelligence
I'm so impressed with all the activities in this book.I am not just picking and choosing activities to do with my preschool-aged daughter, we are pretty much doing every activity. And she is really learning to count.I love that all the activities are interactive and conversational. All areas of intelligence are included: science (count animal footprints or bird calls), interpersonal (find four ways we are alike), etc.All learning styles are also met: hands-on (make numbers from clay, make a counting wand...), auditory (includes some counting songs), and even olfactory (is that a learning style? Not sure, but this book has kids making scratch-and-sniff numbers using spices).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very easy and fun book
This book is really fun for young kids. It's an easy way to learn about math.Great for parents or preschool teachers. Most of these activities can be done with minimal "stuff".Very cute book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic First Math Curriculum
I purchased this book four years ago for our child when she was a preschooler. This book is ideal for those children who like hands on learning activities and games. The book utilizes activities and games to teach mathematical concepts in a fun and engaging format. I would follow this book up with the Singapore Earlybird Math books 1A-2B, then proceed to MCP Kindergarten Math.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of ideas!
We love this book. The activities are simple to prepare and easy for my 5-year old to understand. This is a great help in practicing beginners' math concepts with her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source for an Early Childhood Curriculum.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not games
As previous reviewers have noted, this is a book of worksheets, not games. Those hoping for math games should look elsewhere, such as Family Math : The Middle School Years, Algebraic Reasoning and Number Sense. That being said, this is a good book to use for extra practice and/or review of skills. It is well organized, so it is easy to find a worksheet on, for instance, the order of operations.I use it frequently in my tutoring of jr. high and high school students, a group for which it is often difficult to find materials.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous reproducibles!
Great activities to review skills and motivate students.Easily implemented into the daily curriculum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I purchased for my girlfriend during her student teaching. She was able to use alot of the information in this book to bring the fun back to math. It helped her motivate the students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Games
I like this book and highly recommend anything by the Muschla's.But this is a book of worksheets, not games. It does contain entertaining and challenging worksheets that are useful in the classroom.I more often will use their Algebra Teacher's Activity Kit or the Geometry Teacher's Activity Kit.

This book contains everything you need to pull together a Family Math Night...reproducible directions for each station, challenge activities and parent take-home directions. All you need to complete the task of preparing for Family Math Night is a location, supplies (dice, dominoes, stopwatches, etc.) and an excited group of teachers to help lead each station. At my school, we had funds to purchase a few supplies for each family to take home with them (dominoes, flashcards, mini-clocks, dice). It allowed the practice to continue at home. This book was a great starting point, but I will need to continue to gather new ideas as we continue to have more Family Math Nights.

2-0 out of 5 stars not what I thought
These are great except that many of them require a huge amount of background knowledge of numeracy that my adults don't have yet.I end up spending an entire math lesson on just one of the warm ups to fill in what's missing instead of just using them as a quick 5 minute warm-up.

They would be good for a higher level class, but not so great for an intermediate adult basic ed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic Skills, not so basic activities
I really love most of the worksheet pages in this book. This is a book full of reproducible pages. The pages are great reinforcement pages to a middle/high school curriculum, but the worksheets are not dull and boring. They use higher level thinking skills and offer a little bit of interest by including secret messages and game-type worksheets, too.Highly recommend.Great homework pages.Easy to match up the skills with your curriculum since each page focuses on a single topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Curriculum Supplement
II find these math starters very helpful.I have been using them since the beginning of school and they have been a wonderful tool to help my students get back into the routine of school work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spicing Up the Topic

Each section in this valuable resource features detailed lesson plans, objectives, activity sheets, materials, lists, answer keys, and related activities that cover the basic concepts of six essential areas of the 4—6 math curriculum:

  • Symmetry--from turn and flip to bilateral symmetry and tessellation
  • Geometry--lines, angles, polygons, congruent figures, and more
  • Measurement--from time duration and temperature to distance on a map and scale drawing
  • Probability--such as likelihood, chance, fair games, Pascal’s Triangle, and more
  • Statistics--including picture, bar, line, and circle graphs and methods of data collection
  • Algebra--including patterns, equality, function, and variables

Each activity includes specific teacher directions for presenting the information, followed by reproducible worksheets to copy for the classroom. There’s also a unique appendix of teacher resources, including pictures, grids, tables, graphs, figures, and much more. These can be reproduced for teacher and student use, made into overhead transparencies, and are incorporated into many of the lessons--which means no more hunting for resources. This is a great book if you are teaching your child to cook. Most of the math is in measuring or doubling recipes and other useful things like that. Simple easy recipes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This is a little above my 9 year old but has some good exercises.I think it should indicate the level not just "for kids".Also it sort of jumps around with the activities, It would be easier to use if it was arranged to concentrate of one facet at a time before moving to a different topic.Sort of seesaws. All in all a good math tool and I'm glad to have it even though it takes a little more work on my part to plan the lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars good xmas present
My nephew wasn't thrilled when he opened this at Christmas, but he has read the whole thing and planned meals to cook already, so it's quite successful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and fun way to introduce math topics
I am so excited to use this book with my son.I home school my children and this book presents math topics such as measurements, radius, division, fractions and many others in a practical way.Children see math used in everyday life, in the kitchen! It isn't the only method we will use to teach these topics, but it certainly will add to the enjoyment of learning them!

I teach fourth and fifth grades, and I bought this book thinking that it would offer fun and different ways to incorporate math into everyday life activities like cooking and eating. I found it to be out of date, average at best and did not really require the use of very much math. It is really more of a children's cookbook than a math activity book. I was disappointed. ...
