5-0 out of 5 stars That's a good book
I used it on an advanced device physics class, so not for basic QM. It was understandable and detailed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good QM text
It is one of the finest books you will see on QM and if you are from the electrical engineering stream with semiconductor physics as your major,no text perhaps shall serve you better. The striking aspect of the book is the physical insight it gives into highly abstract theories of QM and the illustration of that theory with a relevant example from the engineering/physical world. Mathematical results we take for granted just as another interplay of the numbers are attributed to some very definite law of nature, for eg the unobservability of absolute frequencies in the probability density function of linearly superposed states is a case in point.Rather than leaving the mathematical expression as a difference of two frequencies he goes onto explain it and also draws an analogy between Electromagnetic waves and the point where the classical limit and the analogy breaks down. This is just one example out of the many scattered throughout the text.Any one with a working knowledge of QM and some introduction to semiconductor physics will immensely benefit from it, though physicists alike, I think can draw much information from the material presented.I hope this book has greater circulation. No wonder the author was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for his seminal work on semiconductor heterostructures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice blend of theory and practice
This is the only quantum mechanics book I've ever seen which doesn't skimp on theory and yet which treats the subject from the perspective of somebody who might actually have to use it to solve problems. Many books of this depth would simply present the abstract theory, but Kroemer always maintains a connection to the application of whatever he's explaining. What's remarkable is that he does so without having to water things down much. It's a shame this book didn't get more attention: it really should've become a classic for anybody in applied physics (i.e. the vast majority of physicists and electrical engineers).

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have for anyone studying quamtum mechanics
This book is fantastic. It is the only book of its kind in that it *explains* quantum theory as well as introducing the full mathematical bra-ket formalism. It also gives the best explanation of multiparticle hamiltonians that I have seen. Most lower level books skip these topics, and upper level books introduce them without much explanation. It covers potential wells and how they apply to electrons in solids (solid state physics) as well as the harmonic potential and many applications in solid state. Most QM books cover this stuff too, but this book actually explains clearly why you should learn this stuff. It has a true physics feel to it, rather than the mathematical treatment of most senior level and 1st year grad texts on QM.It is the perfect book for someone in engineering who is taking quantum mechanics.I also think physics major who takes QM using Liboff, Shankar, or other similar books would benifit greatly using this a companion.

If you have no quantum background you may want to start with Eisberg and Resnick's book, which I also rec'd highly. It is at a slightly less mathematical level, but is a great physics book and covers a very broad range of modern physics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, very physical presentation of abstract concepts.
I feel it is an ideal book to be used by guys who want to USE quantum theory in their research. I have found the presentation ideal for someone with an undergraduate course in quantum mechanics. The concepts are built solidly, with physical insight. The language is crisp and there is an airof authority in the explanation of many concepts. ... Read more

The new 4th Edition lessens the amount of advanced coverage, and concentrates on the topics covered in typical first courses in Fluid Mechanics, while remaining a rigorous introductory level fluids book with a strong conceptual approach to fluids based on mechanics principles. Students from Mechanical, Civil, Aero, and Engineering Science departments will benefit from this title. Students find Shames, Mechanics of Fluids to be readable while having strong coverage of underlying math and physics principles. Shames' book provides an especially clear link between the basics of fluid flow and advanced courses such compressible flow or viscous fluid flow. It also includes Matlab applications for the first time, giving students a way to link fluid mechanics problem-solving with the most widely used computational & problem modeling tool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Came in good condition, with minimal writing in it. received it in about 4 days.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK FROM GREAT TEACHER
This book is great, just like his other books. My advantage was that Dr. Shames actually taught this class when I took it.The book is very useful in preparing the undergrad for fluids and aerospace engineering fields with good explanations of important theory.
The examples are simple because the theory is hard. This book is NOT a cook book plug and chug type of formula book for fluids.

4-0 out of 5 stars for undergrad students , beware !this book is not for you
This book is certainly not intended for undergraduate. But this is a great book if you are a graduate pursuing deeper study in fluid mechanics. To bridge the gap it would be best for undergrad to read other 'introduction to fluid mechanics' book first. And continue to this book after you had astrong background in vector-matrix & tensor analysis. To my opinion ithink the fluid static part is still suitable for undergrad - especiallythe buoyancy part, but its fluid dynamics analysis is far too advanced forundergrad and they should find better understanding in other introductorybooks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Fluids Theory
There is no doubt that Fluid Dynamics is possibly the hardest subject in Mechanical Engineering. The reason, almost all situations in Fluids are non-linear.It is important, for undergrads to realize that this book isnot intended for an introductory Fluids class.notice that the title isnot "Introduction to Fluid Mechanics", this is a graduate levelbook! If you are using this book for an intro level fluids book than yourprofessor either has no taste or he is trying to push you to be ready for agraduate level course in Fluid mechanics. Specifically, the author does agreat job developing the governing differential equations. In particularthe Navier-Stokes Equations. He not only describes how the equation comesabout, but he also describes how to take this non-linear, non-homogenous,partial differntial equation with 3 equations (4 unknowns) and simplify itto solve real world problems. For those of you griping about how bad thisbook is, I suggest you look at "Introduction to Fluid Mechanics"by Fox and McDonald. This book is excellent for the novice, then move upto a "real" Fluids book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shames' text truely shameful
This book provides more confusion and frustration to a student than anything. It ceases to offer sufficient example problems, while the few problems that do exist pertain to the less important theory. Also, thetext provides a lack of explaination as to where it gets its values forconstants - nearly all chapter problems require the utilization of sometype of constant, yet the book has no tables of these values.I actuallyhad to refer to my thermodynamics text in order to finish the questionsfrom this book.It almost seems as if the book was rushed, since itdoesn't explain or justify anything. Finally, I would like to mention thatthis was the most expensive of all my texts.I regret purchasing thistext, as I could have learned more about fluid mechanics in my bathtub thanfrom this book. ... Product Description
Applications of the principles of mechanics of materials have increased considerably over the last 25 years. Today's routine industrial practices and techniques were only esoteric research topics just a few years ago. That research is now relevant to such diverse but commonplace applications as electronic packaging, medical implantation, geology (seismic prediction), and engineered wood products. It is in this rapidly changing world that Madhukar Vable's Mechanics of Materials takes its place as a standard text for civil, mechanical, and aerospace engineering majors, as well as for any other engineering discipline that includes mechanics of materials as a basic course. Vable's distinct pedagogical approach translates into exceptional features that enhance student participation in learning. It assumes a complementary connection between intuition, experimental observation, and mathematical generalization, suggesting that intuitive development and understanding need not be at odds with mathematical logic, rigor, and generalization. This approach also emphasizes engineering practice without distracting from the main point of the text. With strong practical examples and real-life engineering problems praised by reviewers, Mechanics of Materials promises to provide the skills and principles that students need to organize, integrate, and make sense of the flood of information emerging in the world of modern engineering. Pedagogical Features BLOverview: Each chapter begins with a concise Overview that describes the motivation and major learning objective behind the chapter. BLPoints and Formulas to Remember: Each chapter ends with a convenient one-page synopsis of essential topics. BLPlans and Comments: Every example starts with a Plan for solving the problem and ends with Comments that connect the example with previous and future concepts in the text, putting examples firmly into context within the field of mechanics. BLQuick Tests: Quick Tests help students effectively diagnose their own understanding of text material. BLConsolidate Your Knowledge: These boxes follow major topics and prompt students to write a synopsis of or derive a formula for material just covered, encouraging development of personal reasoning skills. BLGeneral Information: These intriguing sections connect historical development and advanced topics to material in each chapter. BL"Stretch Yourself": Problems labeled "Stretch Yourself" contain important reference material that will be useful to students as future engineers. BLClosure: Every chapter closes with helpful links to topics in subsequent chapters. BLFormula Sheet: These useful sheets are found inside the back cover of the book for easy reference. They list equations of essential topics but include no explanations of variables and equations, making them perfect for use during exams. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Text Book Ever.
If you are reading this it means you attend Michigan Tech, it is the only school which uses this book because the author is on staff. No other college in the country will touch it.When taking Mechanics of Materials with this book it was a nightmare to learn. There are so many typos throughout the book that it makes understanding the material an impossibility. For example the sample problems with solutions use numbers in the equations which aren't listed in the problems initial conditions. If the answer you got for a problem didn't match up with the answers in the back, it was not uncommon to blame the book for the error. To be fair though, this is only the 1st edition of the text, and Vable does have a site online pointing out some of the errors which have been found. This isn't enough. The original edition was published in 2002, and a new one is due.

1-0 out of 5 stars An absolute joke of a textbook

3-0 out of 5 stars Great....if you don't have a textbook
the examples are great, but they follow the textbook i have to the letter for the most part.there are some new things, but i wish they would have provided original examples

5-0 out of 5 stars Author's review
I have several copies of this Outline and all Greek letters display fine. Also, I could not find any figures several pages away from their reference. I used Patino font, which is very easy to recognize when used along side Greek letters, especially the letter "vee."

1-0 out of 5 stars Formulas aren't displayed
I'm a huge fan of Schaum's -- the low rating is for formatting on the Kindle.

None of the greek letters (density, torque, etc) display in the text, so it is impossible to read the text without already knowing the material.
Also, the figures are displayed up to 5 pages away from the text to which they pertain -- the speed that you can change pages makes the figures unusable in the context of the text.

Definitely not useful as a sole source of information -- possibly okay for a suppliment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Explanation, Good Problems
This book is terrible at teaching. Each section provides the concept for the following questions, but does not explain things in detail. You won't be able to learn dynamics with this book alone. You will need the solutions manual.

3-0 out of 5 stars Should come with Kraige
I have used this book and the accompanying statics book all within the last year. The author is my Dynamics professor. These books are not as thick as other Statics/Dynamics books I have seen, and the reason is that they are more problem-set oriented than lecture. You really need a good teacher to help you understand the problems and material. This is where having the author as the teacher helps. The instructional sections of the book are minimal, and I have found the problem sets better for the learning process.

If I were to change this book I would add numerical solutions to every problem, not just the odd ones. And for whatever reason, the publishing oversight is uber critical of posting solutions anywhere other than the classroom, and this can be a nuisance sometime.

Fun fact...a self-proclaimed car guy, Kraige loves problems with cars in them, so there are quite a few of those in there.

4-0 out of 5 stars OK book
This book explains the concepts very carefully. However, it jumps topic to topic without a smooth trancision. Examples are very elementary, but the problems at the end of each chapter gets tedious quickly. Prefer if the hard problems are approached with more examples. Biggest down fall I see is that there are no answers at the back for any problems. ... Read more

It includes a guided introduction to the linear theory of elasticity with pivotal results for the circular hole, the elliptical hole and the wedge leading up to the general problem of bodies containing cracks. Typical chapters include problems which extend the mathematical developments presented in the book, applications problems requiring numerical and/or graphic responses, and essay/literature study questions. Additionally, more comprehensive exercises requiring integration of the knowledge throughout the book are included as an appendix. For professionals in fields of engineering mechanics and design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text!
This is a very good book for an introduction towards Fracture Mechanics. The explanations are quite clear and author presents some straightforward derivations of many of the important concepts (derivation of the stress intensity factor, K, for example).I highly recommend this book to anyone looking at 'breaking' in to this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Principles of Fracture Mechanics
"Principles of Fracture Mechanics" is the most concise yet complete survey on the equations and history of fracture mechanics I have found.Professor Sanford does an excellent job explaining how complex analysis is used to derive many of the equations governing the fracture of metals, without bogging the reader down in the mathematical details.I found the book to be enlightening. After reading it, I also found myself wishing I could have taken a course in fracture mechanics from Professor Sanford when I was in college.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Teacher
Alright, I've haven't read the final book. I do have an unfinished version that Professor Sanford distributed when I took this class from him at the U of Maryland. The initial version was excellent. I had tried to slog through other presentations on fracture mechanics and had gotten lost in the details.

Rather than just presenting the stress intensity factor and other concepts, he gave a good historical development of just where these quantities came from and why anyone would or should use them to predict time to failure. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This textbook is for advanced students who already are familiar with the elementary concepts of statics and the strength of materials. The principles of linear continuum mechanics and linear elastic material behavior are presented. They build the foundation for the later treatment of structures such as beams, bars, plates and shells. Particular attention is paid to the respective thin-walled cases. The text also contains some chapters on the more and more important topic of dynamics of structures. Moreover, it provides the fundamental principles underlying modern computer methods. The book is structured such that in each chapter the theoretical considerations are accompanied by several illustrative examples demonstrating the application of these results. At the end of each chapter, additional problems are included. The solutions to these problems are given in the last chapter. ... Read more
