3-0 out of 5 stars survey on damage mechanics by Lemaitre
This book is definitivly too coincise for my taste. Dont't try to use it for self-study, It's a waste of time. I suppose that the previous book by the same author is better suited for a plain reading.Anyway, you can find (spread out the book) many clever triks and suggestions hardly written elsewere.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Broad Cross-Section of Engineering Mechanics
This work presents a wide sampling of solved problems and problems to solve. These include problems related to vectors, beams, trusses, friction (including that on inclined surfaces), virtual work, dynamics of a particle, moments of inertia, mechanical vibrations, and much more.

I only wish that there was an accompanying manual of solved problems for the problems which are not solved in this book. If such a solutions manual exists, please write a comment about it under this review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Might be better with separate outlines on each topic
I used this outline for review and with some problems I was having in a course on computational robotics I was taking a couple of years ago and I found this book to be an excellent review that answered all of my questions. However, my stepson used it in his statics and dynamics classes to help with the material when it was being presented to him for the first time, and he said he felt it brushed over some of the material in both classes. Even though this is a hefty outline, perhaps it would be better if they dedicated separate Schaum's outlines to each subject - statics and dynamics - and covered more ground in each subject rather than putting both subjects in the same book. This outline even has one chapter on mechanical vibrations, but it is just barely an overview and hardly gets into the subject at all. It might be best if that chapter were deleted entirely and more space spent on the subjects at hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engineering Mechanics
This book was helpful in putting together arguments for problems I was working on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good supplementary text
I have always liked the Schaum's series of books. They are straightforward and to the point. This text was no exception.

The most important aspect of this book is that it can be used as a supplement to most of the popular texts. I used it along with Beer & Johnston and Shames.

Quite a useful book on a difficult, hands-on subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference! (Even if the notation is a bit insane)
This book has proven to be incredibly useful and is one of the most complete references I own.It covers the basics as well as what I'd consider to be advanced topics.Recently I've used it as a reference to verify methods for: i) stiffness of a built-up orthotropic open beam section made up of varying laminates; ii) orthotropic plate buckling (long/short & varying boundary conditions); and iii) buckling of open-section orthotropic beams (flexural-torsional, lateral-torsional & local). The book often does a better job of explaining the behaviour than my "approved" methods sources. That's why I decided to write this review.

One word of warning, his notation doesn't always match what I'm used to.The author seems to have a love of squiggly Greek characters, and doesn't hesitate to use them in place of more common notation (common being what's used in MIL-HDBK/CMH-17 and most other references I've used).

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books to learn Fluid Mechanics
An excellent introduction to FluidMechanics clearly written and well illustrated. The book balances theory and practice elegantly. It should be the first reference for anyone interested in this subject. Very didactic. I would really like to see a new edition of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, great price
I love this book!
I borrowed it from a coworker and ended up ordering a copy for myself. The writing is clear and concise, but not too brief, making the book very understandable and useful for self-teaching.
Also, as an undergraduate student, I'm on a tight budget after purchasing my regular college textbooks, but this one is quite reasonably priced. Probably the best $20 a mechanical engineering student can spend.
(Also, if you are not familiar with tensors or more advanced vector calculus, Vectors, Tensors and the Basic Equations of Fluid Mechanics (Dover Books on Engineering) is another great book and makes a perfect companion.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fluid Mechanics (Dover Classics of Science and Mathematics)
This is an excellent book on Fluid Mechanics. It covers all the important topics that both students and practitioners are likely to encounter. Notably, the structure of the book is very logical in that it starts with the fundermentals upon which the more advanced topics are successively built. Three key features of this book are especially outstanding: 1) provision of many worked examples through out the book, 2) provision of many illustrations, including photographs, and 3) provision of problems for the reader to solve at the end of each chapter.

The most notable shortcoming of this book is the fact that it does not use SI units, which are used by many countries. This is a disadvantage as far as international readers are concerned. That is not in the case for USA readers, which is probably the target market for the book. All in all, it is a 5-star book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding & Comprehensive Introduction
Clear yet rigorous approach to a complex topic. This book provides a strong foundation for the equations of fluid motion that is quite approachable. It organizes well Navier Stokes to other equations such asEuler's and Bernoulli's. A useful text for undergraduate engineeringstudents.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is very popular to undergraduate engr. students
This book has been used by several universities and adopted as the course text for several years by the US Naval Academy. It is written to strengthen student's background in applied math, and has many clever example problems. The degree of difficulty is slightly greater than most other texts on the subject but it is justified in that the aim is to improve student's math prowess. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars could be a standard work
With the sound implicit understanding that the reader is very well in tensor calculus the author shows the comprehensive basics of continua mechanics (kinematics, balance relations of mechanics and thermodynamics, objectivity and principle of dual variables) and material behaviour (elasticity, viscoelasticity, plasticity, viscoplasticity including introduction, experimental observation and continuum thermodynamics). The extension for higher kinematics such as micropolar, micromorphic, nonlocal or higher order gradient theories is not given. But the reader must not expect these topics because of space reasons. Topics like dual variables and the thermodynamical background of material behaviour assign this book. The balancing act between a correct representation for mathematicians and a practical one for engineers is done more than successfully. The matters are shown detailed, accurately, entirely and good readable. No question, this book is a very outstanding depiction of this field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent example of what an engineering text should be!
Professor Dowling has done a remarkable job in presenting his material. "Mechanical Behavior of Materials" is pedagogically solid, enabling comfortable self-study for engineering students or practicing engineers. The coverage of deformation, static failure, and fatigue failure analyses are comprehensive, and yet sufficiently detailed to be applied in practice. Individual chapters are devoted to each of the three major fatigue analysis techniques, i.e., stress, strain, and fracture mechanics methods. Each are clearly and thoroughly explained, along with their applications and limitations. Also covered are a host of standard testing procedures, material properties for all major classes, plasticity, creep, relaxation, and material damping (a rarity). Altogether, Professor Dowling's book stands out as an exceptional example of what an engineering text should be. It is a very fine successor to an earlier, and still worthwhile work called "Stress, Strain, and Strength" by the late Professor Robert Juvinall. Another useful book, is "Metal Fatigue in Engineering", by Fuchs and Stephens.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook for students and junior engineers
This book is a great reading for students or junior engineers who are just starting to work in Mechanical Engineering. However, a Senior Engineer and any experienced practician will look for something more deep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text!
I thought that this was an excellent text!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of its kind
This is a very comprehensive and well-written book. Unlike other books that are overly theoretical, this book emphasizes practical methods that are currently being used to solve real-world problems. The treatment of uniaxial fatigue (both stress-based and strain-based) is superb. The chapters on failure theories and 3-D stress/strain are also excellent. Some readers like myself, however, may want a little more coverage of multiaxial fatigue. There is also no coverage at all on column stability. However, if you've found that your college texts on Machine Design and Mechanics of Materials are simply too idealized to be useful, you'll embrace this book with open arms. ... Read more

Product Description

This book is primarily a textbook written for people working on fatigue problems of engineering structures and materials associated with design, predictions, load spectra and experimental verifications. Many different fields of interest are involved, as the block diagram on the front cover indicates. It is of great importance that all these aspects are well recognized and understood. The author explains the various topics in a number of chapters. Understanding of the fatigue phenomena covering both crack initiation and crack growth is emphasized in view of possible influences of design variables, material selection, production technology and load spectra on the fatigue performance of a structure. Prediction methods for fatigue lives and fatigue crack growth are discussed as well as verification by experiments. Load spectra analysis and statistical aspects are also addressed.

The first edition of this book was well received and has been used extensively in various courses taught to staff members and students of universities and other technical colleges as well as in industries and at research institutes. Therefore it was considered time for a second edition. In general, the format of the first edition of the book has been maintained, but the whole text has been carefully revised. A major change is the CD which is now attached to the book. The CD contains exercises on all chapters which can be used in courses, but also for self-tuition and examinations. Secondly, the CD also includes more detailed information on design against fatigue, prediction scenarios, fatigue experiments (how and why), fractography, and analysis of case histories. Two survey papers from the literature have also been added.

This book is exactly what I was looking for because it lays great foundation for understanding fatigue failures, both macro and microscopically.
Although I am still reading it, each chapter is a revelation. After conducting numerous failure investigations,
I've realized that failure initiation and understanding it in great detail is key in developing a root cause.
In my opinion, this book offers greater detail than most when describing what transpires in a material that
is under fatigue loading.Concepts in this book can help strengthen your knowledge on crack initiation as applicable
to all failures, not just fatigue.

Product Description

The seven papers of this volume present a glimpse into current research on soft tissue mechanics as well as some future directions. The seven papers concern tissues within the cardiovascular system: three focus on arteries, three on the heart, and one on biaxial testing of planar tissues such as heart valves. Given that cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the developed world, the importance of such research is clear.

There are notable common features of the seven papers. First, most of the proposed constitutive relations are motivated directly by data on the underlying microstructure, and especially the orientations of a structurally important protein (collagen) that forms as undulated cross-linked fibers. Another feature of most of the papers is the consideration of the fact that both arteries and the heart contain muscle and that there is a need to quantify the so-called active (contractile) response in addition to the passive (non-contractile) response. Such relations must not only be structurally motivated, they must ultimately include the kinetics of calcium transport in the muscle. Constitutive relations for active behavior are discussed in the majority of the papers. The growth and remodeling of cardiovascular tissues is another common feature of the papers. Over the last twenty years, separate advances in biochemistry, cell biology, genetic engineering, and biomechanics have focused attention on the ubiquitous role of growth and remodeling of tissues.

Product Description
Shell structures are used in all phases of structures, fromspace vehicles to deep submergence hulls, from nuclear reactors todomes on sport arenas and civic buildings. With new materials andmanufacturing methods, curved thin walled structures are being usedincreasingly.
This text is a graduate course in the theory of shells. It coversshells of isotropic materials, such as metal alloys and plastics, andshells of composite materials, such as fibre reinforced polymer, metalor ceramic matrix materials. It provides the essential information foran understanding of the underlying theory, and solution of some of thebasic problems. It also provides a basis to study the voluminous shellliterature. Beyond being primarily a textbook, it is intended also forself study by practising engineers who would like to learn more aboutthe behaviour of shells.
The book has two parts: Part I deals with shells of isotropicmaterials. In this part the mathematical formulations are introducedinvolving curvilinear coordinates. The techniques of solutions andresulting behavior is compared to planar thin walled isotropicstructures such as plates and beams.
Part II then treats the behavior of shells, involving anisotropiccomposite materials, so widely used today. The analysis involves thecomplications due to the many elastic constants, effects of transverseshear deformation, thermal thickening and offer effects arising fromthe properties of composite materials. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
I'm currently writing my thesis, this book is perfect for anyone dealing with any kind of material that needs a fracture mechanics book. Just pure and simply perfect.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of room for improvement
Two specific things about this book keep me from rating it higher:

1- The book has a lot of errors. For instance, the polynomial equations for the stress concentration factors (K_I) in chapter 2 are labeled incorrectly. The diagrams for Center Cracked Tension and Double Edge Notched Tension are reversed. There are also other errors, but to list them all here would be pointless.

2- The problem set is close to worthless.Of the 600 page book, there are 18 pages of problems, or less than 100 total problems. The problems are not even that difficult. The "derivations" in the problem sets hardly require more than 2-3 lines of work, and very little deep thought. In other words, the problems are superficial.

Because of the lack of good problems and the errors (in fact, one of the problems seems to have an error in the difference between compliance and stiffness), I wouldn't feel comfortable using this book as a reference. No doubt, it does provide an excellent introduction or overview of fracture mechanics in general, but I would not feel comfortable with this book as my main source of information. There are also few examples with solutions to motivate learning.A good teacher is necessary to go beyond the basics of this text.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for mechanical engineering, I recomnend it to my students
This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics. I recommend it to my undergraduate students. It is very easy to understand. This book is a fundamental source in fracture mechanics. It is a classic book recommended by numerous bibliographies regarding this field of study.

3-0 out of 5 stars Broad overview with not much rigor
This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics. However, it lacks derivations of the equations, and the illustrations are a very crude. This book is probably appropriate for undergraduate level work, but not for graduate level.

Product Description
Overview of this text: it is designed for the first course in mechanics of materials - or strength of materials - offered to engineering students in the sophomore or junior year. The main objective is to help develop in the engineering student the ability to analyse a given problem in a simple and logical manner and to apply to its solution a few fundamental and well-understood principles. In this text, the study of the mechanics of materials is based on the understanding of a few basic concepts and on the use of simplified models. This approach makes it possible to develop all the necessary formulas in a rational and logical manner and to clearly indicate the conditions under which they can be safely applied to the analysis and design of actual engineering structures and machine components. Features of this title include new and revised problems as well as Hands-On Mechanics which helps the professor build in-class experiments that demonstrate complicated topics in the text. The experiments and instructions are posted on associate website.McGraw-Hill's ARIS (Assessment, Review and Instruction System) is a complete, online tutorial, electronic homework and course management system, designed for greater ease of use than any other system available. For students, ARIS contains self-study tools such as animation and interactive quizzes, and it enables students to complete and submit their homework online. For instructors, ARIS provides teaching resources online, and allows them to create or edit problems from the question bank, import their own contents, and grade and report easy-to-assign homework, quizzes and tests. ARIS is free for instructors, while students can purchase access from the bookstore or the ARIS website. ... Read more
