3-0 out of 5 stars Practical but Disjointed
It's pretty good for starting up.I had no background in spanish beyond the average american who learned a few words in grades 2-4, although I do have an extensive background in french. The grammar's similar enough to cue me in on the fact that they don't explain things you're using or could be using to thoroughly and comfortably use the language or even understand much of it.Sombrero is a pertinent medical term as well, apparently.Large chunks of it are very useful, others not so much.Use it for a course, but beyond that it doesn't teach the language in a logical progression of grammar functionality.

5-0 out of 5 stars McGraw-Hill's Complete Medical Spanish
This book has been an amazing resource for me.I already had a very good knowledge of conversational Spanish, but this book reviewed that, as well.I believe that this book was particularly helpful because I already had some knowledge of Spanish; however, in my opinion this book would have been indispensible to me regardless. Its coverage of Medical Spanish is very thorough and helpful. Not only does it give tons of vocabulary, but it also gives helpful patient/healthcare provider dialogue in many different scenarios from asking about symptoms and taking vitals to actual exams in many different specialties.I used this book as my only resource to study for a medial Spanish test, and I feel that I am very prepared.I will also be holding on to this book for future reference. It is THAT helpful!I am so glad that I chose this particular book.Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars DOES NOT COME WITH THE AUDIO PORTION
This is a great, well-organized overview of medical Spanish. However, you will not be able to buy the 3-CD set that it's supposed to come with. McGraw-Hill no longer makes the CD set, as per a representative from their company. I wish I would've known that before buying the book!

3-0 out of 5 stars McGraw-Hill's Complete Medical Spanish
Although this book is not bad, it only gives you the basic information needed to get through a physical exam of a patient, and does not come with pronunciation of the words.I would recommend buying the 'Spanish for Family Practitioners' set that includes this book and a set of 3 CD's.The CD's provide dialogs and pronunciation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good value
This book and the accompanying CDs are the best resource I have found in the way of "how-to" books for learning medical Spanish. The choice of translations is very accurate and the Spanish is generalized in that it will be understood by Hispanics from any country. The writing is personable and engaging, and there is a wealth of information on Latin culture. As an internist who has worked with Spanish-speaking patients for the last 20-odd years, I can say that the subject matter is very relevant and the questions are carefully phrased to ensure accurate responses. Very well done! I recommend it highly.

Product Description
The 4th edition represents a major revision of The Medical Word Book. Most of the reviews on this site are for the 3rd edition.

The 4th edition (1500 pages) is still organized by specialty, with words appearing in more than one section if they apply to more than one specialty. The General Surgical Terms section contains primarily surgical hardware. Other surgical terms, like titles of operations, appear in the appropriate specialty section. The Drugs and Chemistry section has been removed, but the Dentistry section has been restored and updated, and a new section, Oncology and Hematology has been added. Neurology and Psychiatry have been separated, and other specialty sections have been expanded and the titles changed. See the table of contents which has changed substantially.

Designed by transcriptionists for transcriptionists, Sloane's Medical Word Book is a must-have tool for anyone creating medical documents.

Coverage of anatomy and general medical terminology as well as 18 medical specialties.

Both phonetic and correct spellings of words are listed alphabetically for rapid access.

16 pages of full-color anatomy plates.

Brand-new sections on Dentistry and Oncology and Hematology.

Previous entries reviewed and thousands added to reflect current medical practice.

Context clues have been added, cross-references are clearer, and numerous terms have been recategorized. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for medical transcription students
I recently purchased this book in spite of the many bad reviews here. I am glad I purchased it.

It is true that it is difficult to find words in this book because of it's organization into specialties. However, as a student, I find this is a great learning tool. As I hunt for a word, and discover it not where I thought it might be, I discover other words, or discover that I was mistaken about what word I've heard. On the other hand, it is also true that there are words that aren't listed, but that's to be expected in a book of this scope. If this book were expanded about 1000 pages, it might be perfect.

However, it has helped me enormously in my studies. I would guess that I will stop using it much after I get a job, and move on to specialized word books, such as any in the Stedman series, after I know what I need. After all, there are 843 pages in the very thorough Stedman's Medical & Surgical Equipment word book alone. But as a student, I'm not about to buy all the Stedman word books just yet.

In the meantime, I would highly recommend this book, along with some common sense, a medical dictionary, and the internet, to any MT student.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sloane's MWB 4th Edition
Impressive bulk, many different sections such as General Terms, Specialties, Guide to Terminology. There are no visible dividers to show you where the different sections start and end. I use sticky flags, or I could use marks on the edge of the pages if I didn't plan to resell it.

Otherwise, very useful book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sloans Medical Word Book
Don't waste you money.I have been a Medical Transcriptionist for 36 years.I bought the book and so did a co-worker.Have only found one thing in there I was looking for.It has become a joke to look in the $50 word book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Inadequate
I have been a transcriptionist for three-plus years, and I have owned this book for all that time.I honestly cannot recall a single time this book has been helpful. It is a small volume, for a medical word book, being about the size of a thick popular paperback novel, which is wholly inadequate for the monstrously huge field of medical words.

It is separated by specialty, and to give an example of how inadequate this book is, let's just compare the number of pages dedicated to a couple of specialties:For instance, this book gives about 70 pages to ophthalmology, while Stedman's ophthalmology book is 560 pages. The OB/GYN section is about 60 pages, while Stedman's OB/GYN book is over 600 pages.

It's for good reason the sections are so small in this book. For instance, under "orbital" in the ophth section we find 10 entries (orbital apex, orbital cellulitis, etc.).Looking under "orbital" in the Stedman's ophth book we find about 120 entries (orbital abscess, orbital adipose tissue, orbital akinesia, etc.).The MT who hears a hurried eye doc state "orbital akinesia" will find zero help from Sloane. That, obviously, is just one of many such examples I could give.

And, I'll point out, my page totals above for the Stedman's books do not include their multiple appendices, which are also very helpful; this book has no such feature by specialty.I learned quickly that I'd always do better to check my Stedman's specialty word book first, and consequently haven't had reason to use this because it is missing *so much* information.

You get what you pay for.If you need to work independently as an MT, this cheapo approach won't help you much.If you can find any way to lay out a few hundred dollars for a set of Stedman's word books or CDs, you'll be way ahead of the game.I may throw this book into our next garage sale, as it just takes up office space for no good reason.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for newbies to med trans!
When I first started transcribing in 1980, the first edition of this book was my bible. When I was lost in a black hole of unintelligible doctor-mumble, being able to narrow the terms down to groups of specialties saved the day for me. Now, after 23 years as an acute care MT, I teach full time at a community college and I require this book for my transcription students. Ellen Drake's meticulous edits and additions have at least quadrupled the page count and made it a trustworthy reference. I must admit, though, that as an experienced MT, it would not be the first book I pulled off my shelf when stuck on a word now. Now I usually firstturn to the latest edition of Stedman's, the Drakes' latest pharmaceutical reference, or to a word book with extensive terms in a particular specialty. That's because the Medical Word Book is more like a text version of an experienced MT's brain. So I probably wouldn't recommend this for an "old" MT like me -- but newbies will LOVE it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Dictionary
the type was so small, that you can't even read it without a magnifying glass.I wont' be able to use it and I'm not THAT old.

3-0 out of 5 stars wrong pronunciation found
Entry 'fire' has wrong pronunciation in this 11th edition. Then how many mistakes are in this book? What does 11th edition mean? They let me be away from the book. I really await the 12th edition with those worries off.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a great dictionary, but
As always, Merriam-Webster dictionaries are good; they are what they are and anybody ordering one should know exactly what to expect. Contents are five star for the price - this isn't the OED. The reason for the one star deduction is that the open side page ends are solid. There is no indication where, say, the "M"'s or "Q"'s start. One must leaf through the pages and look at the headings. If I had known about this fact, I would have ordered a more expensive version.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST
The perfect dictionary. I've wanted one of these for a very long time. Finally sprung for it. Money well-spent.

Once it was ordered,I didn't have to wait long for it to arrive.

5-0 out of 5 stars It suits my needs
I am so glad this dictionary is not awash with pictures of politicians and entertainers. There are many such people, living or deceased, that I dislike intensely and for good reason. Therefore, I do not appreciate having their faces being flashed in my face when looking up a totally unrelated word. The distraction can derail a good mood or muddle my concentration. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars quick medical terminology
This book was required, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it.Might be helpful for someone with absolutely no idea of terminology, I find it really redundant.

4-0 out of 5 stars perfect preperation for med code course
I purchased this workbook to give me a head start for taking the medical coding and billing certification course in college. I was to begin class 9/21/10 and finished this workbook prior to the class starting. When I got my textbooks for class, I was very happy to see that one of the medical terminology books had similar chapter tests at the end of each chapter. I haven't been a student in 35 years so this workbook helped me to feel I was up to speed with the other students. I highly recommend this workbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed!
When the book first arrived, I was skeptical when I thumbed through it. Now that I've completed chapter 1 and am well into chapter 2, I have to say that I love it! The lessons can be kind of repetitive, but they are not overdone - the repetition really helps to solidify the meanings for me. I have no medical background whatsoever (I need to learn some medical terms in preparation for a course I'll be taking), but this book makes learning the root words, prefixes, and suffixes easy! This is so much better than just memorizing words off a list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Helpful
This book is exceptionally helpful.I am taking a medical terminolgy course and this book has helped me so much!I am learning (and remembering) more from this book than in class.Or rather, this book has helped me to better understand the class!!I am so glad that I have this self-taught guide!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sound Investment
This is a good book for someone who knows either no medical terminologyor only has a limited knowledge of it. That's not to say it's not good for someone who just needs to brush up on the basics, though. It's easy to ready and informative, and won't break the bank. If you workin the science and/or healthcare industries, I reccommend that you add this to your library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Books the Best, Purchase Was Pits
The book is very good, exactly the one I needed. It was also a very good price, the lowest I found. The problem I had was the fact that I went on the Amazon web site, saw the notice that if I ordered within the indicated time I would receive within 21 hours and get free shipping. When I didn't receive it within the time indicated and, I checked on my order. I was told that although I went through the Amazon web site, ordered and paid through the web site my order actually came from a third party which did not come under the shipping agreement I thought I was getting. I feel that if someone uses the Amazon site to order and there is a special stipulation, like the one regarding shipping, if it will not apply to their order there should be a pop up that lets them know it doesn't apply. I feel the way it is handled, it is very misleading. Trying to communicate with someone at Amazon about it doesn't work either. All they do is thank you for using Amazon and tell you your order didn't qualify for the special shipping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific book
I wish that I'd had this book earlier.I have taken Medical Billing and Coding and used a medical term book to prepare. It was ho-hum.Now I am getting ready to go into a nursing program and this book is awesome.I especially appreciate how it links the terms with actual visual presentations of anatomy. It also discusses symptoms and gives you practice reading physician reports. The computer CD-Rom has reviews, quizzes and puzzles that help to sharpen your skills. It even has an audio CD that gives the correct pronunciation of the terms. My daughter's nursing teacher recommended this book. How glad I am that she did!

4-0 out of 5 stars helped me tremendously
I had a Russian-speaking patient who did not speak English at all, so the only way I could communicate was with this book!It was wonderful because the patient could read the page and he would answer yes or no as I pointed to the question I wanted to ask.The sections are broken up into subjects, ie. neuro, pulmonary, etc. so that questions are more easily found.
I gave a 4 star rating only because with the limited time we have, sometimes it took a while to find the question I was looking for.Perhaps an good index might help.Otherwise, a wonderful book and I am going to buy the Spanish version!I wish there was a version in every language! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars book is great, but CD is not for Macs!
The book is great, but I really would have liked to have been able to use the CD--it's not compatible with Macs! And no, they don't offer any alternatives. Buyer beware...

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and easy to understand for beginners!
This book was very very helpful and easy to understand.I would suggest it for anyone entering the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars worthwhile textbook
As a student required to purchase this textbook, I will acknowledge that it is easy to read and understand.I'm finding it to be a good companion to my Anatomy & Physiology textbook (by same author).Using the 2 books together is very useful.I will keep this book as a future reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars TERMINOLOGY A VETERINARY SCIENCE MAJOR MUST KNOW
Excellent textbook for those who are planning a veterinary career! I will keep this as a reference forever!

5-0 out of 5 stars the title of this book doesnt even do it justice.....
This book is clearly more than just a "terminology" book. It goes into massive detail on the causes and treatments on highlighted diseases, injuries, etc.. I personally think that this book should cost way more than what i bought it for. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not that helpful.
I don't speak any Spanish.I have not found this pocket guide to be very helpful.Perhaps I'm a specialist and need something more specific for my specialty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource (especially when used with audio CD)!!!!!
I refer to this handy little flipbook on a regular basis. It is well-organized and extremely easy to use.I uploaded the audio CD to my iPod and listen to it all of the time (while waiting in grocery lines, exercising, etc.).I wish that they would make another with even more medical terms.Don't hesitate...buy this now.You won't regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great help
This book is very helpful when talking with patients. Even if you can not speak well, it is written in Spanish on the opposite page and they can be reading along with you in case your pronountiation is not accurate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pocket Medical Spanish
This book is a wonderful aid for those who are trying to learn medical Spanish, or need a tool to treat patients who only speak Spanish (when you have no Spanish experience). All you need to know is Si, No and No Se (yes, no and I do not know); and with these three phrases you can treat a patient immediately and effectively. They even have a tape or CD that can accompany the book. What a well thought out book for anyone who needs medical Spanish to advance their career or needs to treat patients on a medical missionary trip.Well done Dr. Dollinger! It is so easy, the first time I picked up the book I was ready to go in a few minuets.

3-0 out of 5 stars ehh?
The book is really good if you don't know spanish and just want to read something to the patient and get a response that you don't understand.Don't get me wrong, it really is a decent book, but the emphasis is certainly not on learning medical spanish and is more on getting your point across to the patient. How you would interpret their answer will remain a mystery to me...I'll let you know how it went when I get back from our medical missions trip to Nicaragua. ...
