5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite!
So beautiful!I plan to buy many more of these CDs.
Instant peace is restored in my house when this music travels through my rooms.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very soothing
I bought this album to use during my childbirth but didn't get to use it. It turns out that my baby really loves to fall asleep to this music. As soon as I turn on the music, he immediately calms down if he was fussy. Then he falls asleep within a few minutes. I am buying a couple of albums from him for variety.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful!
Beautiful music! I need to have very peaceful, and relaxing, music for my work and this definitely fits the bill. It makes me feel like I am in the mountains of Tibet. The flute playing is superb and brings one to an altered state.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music
I listen to soothing music to help me sleep, so I want something both beautiful and mellow. This CD is perfect for that use, but also for use during the day to help keep me in a "zen" mood.

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic material
I've read other books by this author and found them wonderful! I am half way through this book and I'm disappointed. I keep wondering when the 'meaty' material will begin. It's too basic for what I was expecting. Although it may be a good introduction to lectio divina for beginners.

4-0 out of 5 stars Considering Ignatian Prayer Mehtods
This is a very useful introduction to Ignatius'approach to praying with Scripture. The idea of "praying" with Scripture is not widely familiar among American Catholics. This boiok explains whn the method is important and how is can be practiced.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and exciting
I didn't know what to expect when I ordered this book. It was an easy read. I found the experiences shared by those who used this method of meditation to be very helpful. I am a huge fan of Guided Meditation and this seems to offer further means of spiritual growth. I am sharing the book with a friend right now, so we can discuss it and give it a try. It really sounds exciting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical and reliable spiritual guide
This volume is a practical, experience-based guide to the twin Ignatian practices of meditation and contemplation.Distilling from years of spiritual direction and retreat work, and drawing freely from the insights of well-known figures in the Catholic mystical tradition, Fr. Gallagher walks the reader through the various moments in Ignatian spirituality. The use of actual stories helps keep the presentation easy to understand and shows how, in practice, a person of prayer will often move gently from one stage of reflection to another, depending on the needs of the heart.

Readers of the author's other works will find this one closest in style to his Examen Prayer(The Examen Prayer: Ignatian Wisdom for Our Lives Today), with its weaving together of experience and Ignatian theory, though Meditation and Contemplation proves to be even more accessible than that volume. As well, its treatment of various forms of spirituality, including the often ignored colloquy, expands upon the single-topic focus of the earlier book.

Those with little experience in the life of prayer might wish to start with Fr. Gallagher's Examen Prayer, which outlines a practice remarkably easy to begin and endlessly varied in its fruits. Those who already have some experience but are wishing to move deeper in their practice, including Catholic practice related to daily and weekly Mass and the reading of scripture, would find many of the lessons in this volume easy to apply to their lives, as well as gaining reassurance when, as often happens, their own experiences follow patterns so well identified and articulated by Ignatius centuries ago. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ThisBook is for True Yogis and Yoginis
Ever since I was a child, I have always been thrilled by the great books about Yoga as they not only pointed to the incredible possibilities of being human, but showed us how to awaken and realize these potentials. This is such a book.

Layne Redmond is an authentic yogini, a brilliant scholar, author and a gifted artist and musician. Her keen intellect has a depth of curiosity and sincere interest that takes her research to the very heart of the matter. I know.I was one of the people she grilled while writing this book and my library of rare and sacred yogic texts was thoroughly examined.Layne has also spent her lifestudying and practicing yoga in several traditons with true yogis such as Yogiraj Swami Bua and Hari Dass Baba, among others.

It was with great joy as I read through this well written and fascinating book. Layne has created another classic for my library. This is one of those books that saves you from reading a whole bunch of other books as Layne has thoroughly done the research and tied it all together. It is a fascinating book and easy to read. But this is a book for true yogis, for yogic practitioners. It not only tells you all about the chakras from several points of view, including the psychological and scientific ones, but also how to safely practice this powerful yoga.Layne very clearly delineates the why and how of the practices within the book, and then leads you through them on the CD that accompanies the book. Layne has a soothing and inspiring voice that comes from her many years of teaching and performing. Reading the book gets the reader excited about awakening the incredible potentials within the chakras. Listening to Layne on the CD is the guru safely guiding you through these effective and powerful yogic practices.

And then there are the awesome, full page pictures of each chakra and the whole chakra system with the three major nadis, or psychic nerves. They are beautiful!

This is a fun, all encompassing book on the chakras and how to awaken their awesome potentials. This is a true yoga book. If you are a yogi/yogini, you know what I mean. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description
Meditation, says Lorin Roche, has been held captive by gurus and overly restrictive spiritual traditions for centuries. It should be one of life’s great pleasures – to be savoured like ice cream or a cold beer on a hot summer day. You don’t have to sit in an awkward position or empty your mind or relinquish desire to meditate, claims Roche. Here he offers startlingly simple techniques to wake up the senses and relax the body and mind. With this amazingly clear and reassuring guide, anyone can learn to meditate.Amazon.com Review
"This is come-as-you-are meditation," writes Lorin Roche inMeditation Made Easy. Roche, a meditation trainer for 30 years, knows how to make the uninitiated feel at ease. He debunks thestereotype that you have to follow monastic rules: you don't have tosit still, or empty your mind, or overcome your ego. "Meditation isabout being intimate with your deepest self," so imposing techniquesand formalities that don't fit you will just interfere. Meditationshould be "a direct response to sensing some need in your body orheart ... a pleasurable indulgence ... a mini-vacation." Rochediscusses the basics in a warm, friendly, question-and-answer chapter, and then teaches the stages of "getting in" to a meditation. Variedtechniques and exercises let you explore what works for you. "GoingDeeper" shows you how to turn details of everyday experience--such asdrinking coffee--into a mini-meditation. For fun, check out "How toMake Yourself Miserable in Meditation"--for example, "Use a mantrathat grates on your nerves"; "Worry about whether your chakras arebalanced"; "Choose a tradition that reminds you of the worst aspectsof your childhood." This book not only teaches you how to meditate; itmakes the process easy and enjoyable. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Meditation Made Accessible
For someone interested in introducing a practice of formal meditation into their daily routine, this book makes that practice possible, without all the new age or eastern philosophy and without forcing a single method. Lorin really gives you the controls, he just provides road map.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best meditation guide out there
This books is the best guide to many different types of meditation that I have ever read. It is very easy to read, encouraging, and opens up all kinds of possibilities for meditation. This is my second copy. I gave my first to a friend and plan on ordering more for other friends.

3-0 out of 5 stars Meditation Made Too Easy
Meditation Made Easy was very well written, organized and with both humor and clear examples of how to meditate. The problem I had with the book was how Mr. Roche continually made it seem like we were already meditating by many of the things we do in our everyday lives----such as daydreaming or contemplation. I think there is some truth to what he says, but too often he made it sound like no effort is needed to meditate. From 30 years of various forms of meditation I know that in fact it does take effort----a lot of effort. However, in Mr. Roche's defense, I think what he had to say, overall, will enable those who are interested in meditation to at least get started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best meditation book by far
I have hundreds of books and if I could only keep one, this would be it. I bought many meditation books prior to this one and haven't felt the need to look further since. It is both relaxing and refreshing to read and I do so at least twice a year. I've given it as a gift to important people in my life and they value it as much as I do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Meditation Practices for People Who Think It's Difficultor Weird
I'm a conservative who happens to practice yoga and meditation.Yoga for over 10 years; meditation for about 7.They are practices, so I like to read some new material now and then because it's good to learn more about the things you do.Could be cooking or decorating, too, right?

I started as a closet meditator, because it was difficult for folks to deal with the stereotype.I've come to enjoy and look forward to my meditation practice more and more over time.I'm sleeping the best I ever have thanks to meditation practice.Still, occasionally one feels the need to seek out the new and different, so I read a lot about meditation too.

The book is part discussion, part exercises. The discussion material tells the reader flat out that you don't have to play by anyone's rules to meditate. The tone is conversational. It's almost like having a teacher at my side. The exercises cover a wide range of techniques - there's a lot of creativity, and something for everybody. From breathing to mantra to pause-at-the-door, numerous tips for getting yourself into a meditative state are presented. My star off 5 is because no one is going to find all these useful. Some are filler.

If you haven't tried meditation, even if you don't plan to meditate, it wouldn't hurt to read this book because you can get an idea of why people meditate.Don't take my word for it, take Roche's.Meditation doesn't have to be weird, scary, or hard to do.This is a good book for getting started. This is also worthy material for the seasoned meditator, even if you don't always agree with the author. ... And the converse of this maxim is equally true.14 Stray no further. Thou wilt never read those commentaries of thine, those tales of old-time Greece and Rome, that anthology thou wast reserving for old age. Then hasten to the goal; fling aside these empty hopes, and, if thou carest for thee and thine, succour thyself before it be too late.JS Men know not how varied are the meanings of the words ' stealing,' ' sowing,' ' buying,' ' resting,' far less of the injunction' to look what ought to be done '; for this is seen not by the eyes, but by a far other vision !16 There are three things: body, soul, and mind. Of the body is sensation; of the soul, impulse; of the mind, principles. To receive inward impressions of external things is given even to the beasts of the field : to respond to the strings of impulse is a power common to the brute creation, to those who have made themselves neither man nor woman, to a Phalaris or a Nero, to the atheist and the traitor, and to the wretches who deem no act too gross when once they have closed their doors. If then all else is common to the creatures we have mentioned, there is but one thing left that is the peculiar property of the good man : to follow the guidance of his intellect towards the things he sees to be his duty, to welcome with pleasure all that fate has interwoven with his life, to defile not the godhead implanted in his breast nor break into its calm with a rabble of impressions, but to preserve it tranquil, following thedivine will indecency, and sinning not in word or deed against truth and justice.Such a man, though all should mistrust him and sneer at his claim to live a simple, modest, and cheerful life, displays no anger at any of these, nor swerves a jot from the path that... ... Certainly Marcus Aurelius Antonius is one of the great philosophers.Known as a "stoic", it might be better to look at him as a rather common-sensical person who has thought long and hard about the world and humans' place in it.This is a good book for reading just before going to bed.The tone is peaceful, quiet and lends itself very well to contemplation. If you have not read any of his material, this book is a good place to start. ... Product Description
The Ancient Meditation Technique that Brings Real Peace of Mind

Vipassand-bhavand, "the development of insight," embodies the essence of the teaching of the Buddha. As taught by S. N. Goenka, this path to self-awareness is extraordinary in its simplicity, its lack of dogma and, above all, its results. The Vipassana technique can be successfully applied by anyone.

Based on the lectures and writings of S. N. Goenka--and prepared under his direct guidance--The Art of Living shows how this technique can be used to solve problems, develop unused potential, and lead a peaceful, productive life. It includes stories by S. N. Goenka, as well as answers to students' questions, that convey a vivid sense of his teaching.

S. N. Goenka's Vipassana courses have attracted thousands of people of every background. Unique among teachers of meditation, Goenka is a retired industrialist and former leader of the Indian Community in Burma. Although a layman, his teaching has won the approval of senior Buddhist monks in Burma, India, and Sri Lanka, a number of whom have taken courses under his guidance. Despite his magnetism, he has no wish to be a "guru" --instead he teaches self-responsibility. This is the first systematic study of his teachings to appear in English.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for serious followers only
This book like Vipassana Meditation offers no nonsense approach to what is the purpose of life in real terms. A must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meditation for the Truly Serious Meditator
News of this slim volume was delivered to me by one of my closest friends who also happens to teach Buddhism. Since we exchange books and information, and it always seems to come from my direction, his recommendation of this book was something to be taken seriously. He was so absorbed in its contents and direction that he undertook the 10-day Vipassana Meditation retreat that students of S.N. Goenka offer. While he was on his retreat, I read the book and was immediately taken by its clear, practical approach to what is considered Buddha's original prescription for meditation and ultimately reaching nirvana. Upon my friend's return (he hadn't changed all that much) and his relaying to me the details of the place and course, I resolved to take the Vipassana training myself. I applied and was accepted. Needless to say, those closest to you will not look on this adventure with the same enthusiasm as you. It really reflects Buddha's Second Noble Truth: that ignorance causes suffering. So I recommend that all involved immerse themselves in the great goal and opportunity for self-growth that Vipassana offers. This book and the practice will change your life (and those around you) for the better.

5-0 out of 5 stars great introduction to vipassana bhavana
over the years I've been practicing meditation, both here in America and also in Asia, I've had the opportunity to read hundreds of books on the subject.
this book i wish i had read years earlier. I haven't found a better introduction to the practice of Vipassana than this. i can't recommend it enough. clear, concise, and down to earth. there is no heavy use of jargon, or an author that likes to toot his own horn. each chapter explains a different aspect of the practice, then has a Q&A, (which is very helpful since a lot of these questions are practical)then wraps up with a story that explains the subject in a more poetic way. this really reinforces the message of each chapter and lets it sink in. If you're interested in the practice of vipassana this is a must read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Challenging
Great read and some great stories to illustrate what Goenka is teaching. Well illustrated by the words "Progress is measured according to whether you develop equanimity. You have no other real choice but equanimity, because you cannot change sensations, you cannot create sensations....You are breaking the old mental habit of reaction." He is teaching us about owning our reactions exploring them and understanding why we have them and then letting them go. There is nothing else to do!! Again another way to grow and learn to be on a path that is leading you to a more satisfying way of life.
Dr Gunta Krumins-Caldwell author of On Silver Wings

1-0 out of 5 stars This is the wrong path to the art of living
This book is an introduction to the 10-day intensive meditation course. In addition to reading the book I've done the meditation course and it was one of the worst experiences of my life.

I felt this technique of meditation was all about competing and trying to win (Karma) points. Everyday at the end of day you have to listen to a recorded speech by Goenka focused on teaching "the right way" to enlightment. He tries to fill your head with rules, and guilt for all the "bad things" that you are supposedly doing. This leads to the development of a mentality of stress and trying to achieve something, when I think meditation should do the exact opposite. I honestly felt he was trying to brainwash people.

This technique is not only bad, it is also dangerous. You meditate for 10hrs everyday, without any preparation for any psychic effects and revelations that might come out of such intense meditation. I started having hallucinations and asked the teachers for help and they simple kicked me out of the retreat in the middle of the night without any care for my well being. There are many cases of people that have psychological issues during this course, and there are even known cases of people that after leaving the retreat have commited suicide. But the Goenka school tries to hide all this. Honestly, they have a cult culture, they care about the ideology and not really about the people.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic on mindfulness meditation
Anything written by Joseph is essential reading. You may also enjoy the following recommendation if you really want to explore mindfulness in depth, then I also recommend 'The Path of Mindfulness Meditation', available through Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Like Brandy...
Goldstein's, "Insight Meditation" is a bit like brandy: a distillation of the fruits of his efforts. There are no shortcuts along the path, though these writings can help remind us of what we already know... and like brandy, a small dose goes a long way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best book for beginning meditators
The best book for beginners that I have seen is "Mindfulness in Plain English" by Bhante Henepola Gunaratana. This is a good follow-up book that goes a little deeper into many of the concepts of insight meditation. It has very short sections that are very readable. It's not a "how to" book. It's a "what does it mean" book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing wisdom
Joseph Goldstein is tremendously insightful, and expresses the wisdom of Buddhist philosophy in a way applicable to all, regardless of religious affiliation.I borrowed it from my local library and wanted it for my home collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
I borrowed this book from a friend a few years ago, the first book I read on the topic of mindfulness, and it is still perhaps my favorite. Goldstein writes in a very easy to understand language while still incorporating Pali terms. He mixes traditional teachings with his personal experience in such a way that really helps to convey the message more effectively. This is an excellent book for those newly interested in meditation and Buddhism but is also a valuable read for those with more experience too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very insightful and well written
Found the book to be very insightfull and well researched. The spiritual substance is rich and inspiring. The author did not prove that he researched the material but a practicer as well. I have read it over twice and each time, I find something new. This book will remain a fixture in my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mystic of the bible
Without the Kabbalah, a lot of meditation regarding what the prophets have done in the Bible, would be difficult to comprehend. There are couple of points I do suggest:
1. After reading the introduction, I suggest to read, Pg 306 (because it is the summary of the whole book). From the line: "The techniques of the Hekhalot and Abulafia are highly advanced and dangerous.....Rabbi Nachman's method was the most universal, and could be used literally everybody". Rabbi Nachman's methods can be found in the book "Jewish Meditation" by Aryeh Kaplan, extensively.
2. Pg 40, it explains that a system of purification is needed after the ashes of the Red Heifer no longer exist.
3. Pg 114, It says a summary about Rabbi Abulafia's teachings by Rabbi Albotini. Pg 77, it starts to explain the journey to find a purification through the permutation (Tzerufath) of the NAMES of GOD.
4. Pg 195-198. I will suggest to read it at least twice. The Elijah's path is another safest way of purification(and most realistic, you will also see that in Meditation and the bilble by Aryeh Kaplan, Pg 21). About the mechanism how an Advocated Angel will work on you, I read more or less the same thing in eastern mystic book.
5. Pg 231 the meditation on the mystical name YBK (Psalm 20th) and "Meditation and the bible" by Aryeh Kaplan Pg 139-140 Psalm 119th, it is a good combination.
5. Pg 185, it's a big summary of the Ten Sephirot, about its letter, vowel, meditation word (Tetragammaton). You just need to add the color and english translation write on Pg 181.
6. From a more scientific propose, like Aryeh Kaplan would say in his book Jewish Meditation, Pg 120: "....the spine is universally recognized as an important conduit of energy", I will suggest to meditate in this book, Pg 256, The sephirot and man, to "activate" our "own chakras", because it is exactly what the book "The Subtle body" by Cyndi Dale Pg 275 says by "idolatrous" means. However, in the book "The Subtle body" by Cyndi Dale Pg 326-327, regarding the sephiroth and chakric associations, are very different from Aryeh Kaplan (Pg 256).
7. P32 it's an interesting way how it links to eastern mysticism.
8. Pg 231 (as in Pg 40 from 2nd paragraph to the end of the page: From then on....). Again, the book explain about the danger of the Practical Kabbalah withouth the proper purification. With this kind of information, my guess about the "Book of Abramelin" (I don't want to say anything bad about this book) could be a result of Practical Kabbalah???. In the "Book of Abramelin" by George Dehn version, Pg 199-200 Appendix IV, say something about this "unpurified problems". Although, there are other kinds of magic books, this one explicit connects with the Kabbalah.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic by the late Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan
Kaplan's classic work in which he demonstrates how many advanced meditative techniques were used by the kabbalists.Aryeh Kaplan born in the Bronx, NY was a noted American rabbi and author, who had an MS in physics. In researching his books, Rabbi Kaplan once remarked: "I use my physics background to analyze and systematize data, very much as a physicist would deal with physical reality. A great primer for those not interested in pop Kabbalah books. Kaplan practiced what he wrote and it shows. A great text for serious students and those who want real Kabbalah.

4-0 out of 5 stars Meditation and Kabbalah
Excellent introduction to the history of Kabbalah and how we can apply to our everyday lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Jewish Mystical Path, an Essential Stop at an Intermediate Level
This book is not as potentially rewarding to a beginner but requires some knowledge before reading. It is a good idea to know a little bit about the various famed Rabbis, who they were, where they lived, and what they were famous for.It is also a good idea to have some reasonable level of experience of meditation and prayer, and to have had some direct experience with devekut and feel comfortable and validated in one's experience. It is also good to have a basic grounding in theoretical Kaballah and the sefirot.Maybe more than basic.

So, if the above paragraph describes you, this book is an astoundingly great book. First of all, the historical timeline of the rabbis and their interelationships is easy to understand and is very synthetic.I also found the presentation of Abulafia's permutation methods to be easily understandable and surprisingly easy to put into practice (the first one anyway).I can hear the angels now whining about my newfound attempts to permute the Tetragrammation, who do these puny humans think they are anyway?

I have edited this review as I recently finished the book. This is a phenomenal book. The first text that I have read which provides an organized understanding of the timeline and rabbinic players in the ongoing tradition of Jewish mysticism. From Abulafia to Cordovero to Reb Vitale to the Ari and the Baal Shem Tov, all of the important rabbinic figures, their contributions and their historical relevance are coherently summarized.I wish that I had read this book a lot earlier. But even better, Kaplan provides a summary of the yichudim and meditations used by the masters here in the text.Although there is a slightly amusing warning in the beginning of the text that you cannot read the text in a bathroom because it contains the names of God, there emerges a much clearer understanding why the publishing of this material can be considered potentially dangerous. The clear meaning of the commandment regarding not taking God's name in vain is apparent after reading this book. The use of these meditations and yichudim without near perfect intent by people is the ultimate meaning of taking God's name in vain.In other words, it is misuse of the names of God.Used in the correct manner, the book is fabulous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to meditiation
This is a fantastic book. The reviews here aren't doing this little gem justice by any means. I've read several meditation books, and this one synthesizes the ideas of meditation beautifully and simply. Whether you are completely new to meditation, or have some hours of practice under your belt, you will find insight and clear information in this book.

Stephanie has a gentle, logical approach to the practice, ideas, and benefits of meditation. She clearly explains what meditation is, what it isn't and the various types. She moves slowly, but keeps your interest and provides exercises to do before moving on. It's a great course on meditation, an easy, worthwhile read, and definitely worth the price, as it the ideas and methods within will change your life if you practice them.

2-0 out of 5 stars When she says beginners, she means beginners.
I was dissapointed with this book, because it was exactly what I was trying to avoid.Clement falls into the same trap as so many other authors - they tell you when to meditate, why to meditate, who meditates - but never gives a good explanation on HOW to meditate. She never quite gets to the meat and potatoes of meditation. This is a good book to read if you've never heard of meditation - not one article, not one example of the experience - an absolute beginner.Otherwise, throw this junk aside. There are better, more complete guides available (such as "The Best Guide to Meditation" by Victor Davich).

5-0 out of 5 stars great book on meditation
This book makes you curious about meditation and then makes it easy for you to do it by giving very simple instructions.
The quote from frost's poem "mending wall" in this book is a great motivator to question yourself how meditation might make you think in new ways.
It also gives you examples from every day activities that are similar to its ideas of meditation. But it clarifies watching tv is not meditation, neither is highway hypnosis. It gives you techniques to make you more self aware when involved in these tasks. It also teaches you to concentrate when your mind wanders.
Easily one of the most efficient self help books available.

4-0 out of 5 stars "...now close the book"
This isn't my way of telling you not to read the book. Meditation for Beginners is the only title that I've seen that tells you "read through the exercise, then close the book." Since I am not one long on patience, or someone who follows directions all that well, this advice is perfect for me. If you're new to meditation, you will soon learn that it isn't just the stereotype of chanting "om" in the most uncomfortable position possible. This book shows several types of meditation, such as using walking, mantras, cards, and dreams. Easily distracted? It's okay, part of meditation can be "thinking about thinking." Find the right posture and breathing that works best for you. Should your eyes be opened or closed? Many options are explored to help you find the best possible experience. Meditation for Beginners teaches you how to lock on to inner awareness, even if your thoughts show you being aware of nothing but distraction. This book will encourage you to move to the next levels of relaxation so you can ultimately reach a point of peace and visualization, it will surely lower your blood pressure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this one! Powerful confidence builder.
Every expectant mother should listen to the positive, powerful, confidence building affirmations. One CD is for pregnancy and the other for labor. Quite frankly, anyone who labors with women, care providers and family, would benefit from the powerful messages advocating active, normal birth

2-0 out of 5 stars Too New Age
I bought a few different relaxation CDs to compliment my hypnobirthing class but I found this one to be the most new age type quackery. I have strong Christian principles and I value the philosophy of hypnobirthing without making it into a "we are our own God" type philosophy like this author.

2-0 out of 5 stars Oh dear...I'm so picky
I'm sure this is a good CD for lots of people. But as I'm not familiar with American voices it was not relaxing for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A big reason I was able to avoid pain meds in birth
I bought this CD set and listened to it throughout the last half or so of my pregnancy. I had so much trouble sleeping and was still working- I was willing to try anything to get more rest. I listened to them every night. They did the trick every time!

I wanted a natural childbirth, but I ended up with pre-eclamsia. Although I had to be induced, I honestly think I owe thees CD's in large part for my avoidance of a c-section- they helped me stay as relaxed as possible under the scary circumstances.

I highly recommend them- I listened to them the whole time I was in labor and nurses were always commenting on how relaxed I would get.

Good luck ladies!

1-0 out of 5 stars how awful Amazone's services are!
About three weeks ago, I bought this Cd from you sent me a WRONG CD!! Not only that you guys sent me AGAIN a wrong one as a replacement! Then I asked about refund, nd now it's been TWO WEEKS that I'm waiting for my money!!
Amazone is simply losing one of thier good customers!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for newbies
I've bought a few of Jeffrey Thompson's CDs for when I'm working, but this is the first meditation CD I've used consistently. I've also bought a few CDs from Deepak Chopra that are specific for meditation, but I just haven't been able to get into them. However, I've used this CD a lot. The format is really useful - for those of us who have a severe case of monkey mind, having a set 30 minutes is great. At first, I used the guided meditation (1st track), but after a month or so, I find myself going to the second track w/30 minutes of unguided meditation most of the time. I can't say that it's cured the monkey mind, but I do feel refreshed and like I have more clarity on the mornings when I listen to it, which I try to do as often as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soothing Sounds
This is another one of Kelly Howell's wonderfully soothing cd's.I find her voice to be so calming and relaxing in itself. This has a guided meditation on the first track and a silent/background music only meditation on the second track, which is just as good.

After listening to the meditation, I feel re-energized and physically as well as mentally I feel healthier ... you just need to remember to keep up the breathing.

I think you'll enjoy this and find it really relaxing too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall recommend it... with a few reservations!
I have chronic health issues and recently underwent major surgery...just before that I bought Kelly's CD along with some others. Right after surgery the part about having to climb a path uphill wasn't a positive image as my body wasn't in "climbing" readiness...so I created an image of a big fluffy white bird giving me a "flight" to the location rather than having to walk uphill!

Like others have shared, her voice is quite pleasant and enjoyable to listen to...I also have used her CD Guided Relaxation and really enjoy the imagery of being in a healing garden. Other CD's I have found useful are: "Ease Pain" and "Successful Surgery" by Bellruth Naparstek and Stress Relief for Life by Susan Hepburn(especially helpful out of all the one's I've listened to so far!) I have found that listening to this Healing Meditation has overall been uplifting and positive...

Now for the "negatives:" The "affirmations" in the first track of the Guided Imagery are VERY "New Age", a bit too extreme in positive thinking one-dimensionality and not based in reality. Death, body symptoms, and deterioration are a natural part of life and the CD is too one-sided towards an all too stereotypical extreme New Age positivism.I'd prefer a more realistic, yet still encouraging and uplifting, optimistic presentation that would be more applicable, healthy and appropriate for a wider audience, especially for people of middle to older age. I have said to myself GRRRRRRRR when listening to her repeat several times during the imagery her focus on "PERFECTION." Such phrases and emphasis are simply annoying...The solution: Edit things out that don't "fit" for you and focus on those parts that you like!

The book is made up of six meditations, in which Descartes first discards all belief in things which are not absolutely certain, and then tries to establish what can be known for sure. The meditations were written as if he was meditating for 6 days: each meditation refers to the last one as "yesterday". However, Descartes did not take 6 days to complete this work, it actually took several years. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Descartes Many Firsts but not the Last
When I was in the midst of my educational pursuits, I took my first course in philosophy. One day my professor stumped the class with the question: "What do humans have that is distinct from non-human animals? Is there anything unique about humans?" The professor then contended that when one surveys all animal species there isn't anything fully unique about mankind. Although the class tried, no one was able to mount an effective argument that refuted his premise.

Nevertheless, one thing that human beings do that no other species attempts is epistemology: asking how we know what we know. The whole mass of the animal world lacks the ability to build an epistemic view.

And Rene Descartes was one of the chief thinkers who helped birth modern epistemology. Descartes aspired to set in motion human knowledge afresh through finding a place to ground indubitable knowledge. He sought to thrust aside the collected mass of rational predispositions, preconceptions, prejudices, partialities, and biases of the past and construct form the epistemic ground up, constructing one logical certainty upon another.

This volume is arranged of 6 meditations, in which Descartes first castoffs all notions that are not absolutely certain, and then aims to launch a certain knowledge system. The meditations were written as if he was meditating for six days as each contemplation refers to the last one the previous day.

Descartes was mathematician; philosopher and a true mastermind in the early epistemological pursuits as he embraced dualism. Additionally he's the author of the controversial: "I think therefore I am" formulation; since I am thinking, I must exist. His aim was to find an immovable impossibility of the contrary foundation as the starting point within a fuller epistemic scheme. Most, from all epistemic schools, believe that Descartes failed and at best made a case for solipsism.Nonetheless his work helped launch countless valuable epistemological pursuits.

Furthermore many admire his ontological argument for the existence of God, although Plantinga has recently devised a much more potent OAFEG.

Descartes was a central and essential pioneer of modern epistemology and mathematics; the world would be much inferior without his exceptional, yet dated, work.

* Epistemology: Thestudyofhowweknowwhatweknow, the nature and basis of knowledge, the accounting and justifying of knowledge claims, and the sources and scope of knowledge. Epistemology explores the question: What do men ordinarily denote when they say that they `know' something?

* Laws of Logic: Abstract, non-concrete laws of thought and reason that are nonmaterial, universal, obligatory, and absolute. All rational communication and thinking assume the laws of logic. The most well known law is the law of non-contradiction: A cannot be A and not-A at the same time in the same way. A man cannot be his own father. The laws of logic reflect the nature and mind of God; thus, they have ontological grounding--that is, they are grounded in the very nature of truth itself and cannot bereducedtohumanconvention, opinion, orpsychology. Reject the laws of logic, including the law of non-contradiction, and rational thinking is impossible. To deny the law, one must use the law in attempting to deny it. Those who deny logic are participating in a self-refuting effort.

Buy this, ruminate over Descartes' assertions, and expand your own epistemic method.

******************

Meditations is the title of a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius setting forth his ideas on Stoic philosophy.

Marcus Aurelius wrote the 12 books of the Meditations in Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. It is possible that large portions of the work were written in Sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180. We know that some of it was written while he was positioned at Aquincum on campaign in Pannonia, because internal notes tell us that the second book was written when he was campaigning against the Quadi on the river Granova (modern-day Hron) and the third book was written at Carnuntum. It is not clear that he ever intended the writings to be published, so the title Meditations is but one of several commonly assigned to the collection. These writings take the form of quotations varying in length from one sentence to long paragraphs.

As a meditation teacher and law of attraction practitioner, I am constantly seeking out and using meditation and affirmation CD's.But none have helped me more than Bernie Siegel's CD's, especially this one, Meditations for Peace of Mind. At one point in my life where I had experienced a serious loss, I used this CD every day for just over a month, at times listening to it a number of times a day. I have to say this CD is THE main thing that helped me to recover. It did exactly what the title says, it restored my peace of mind. The CD has two meditations, each with wonderful music that is easy to listen to. And, Dr. Bernie Siegel's timing, tone of voice, and words are so soothing, healing, and filled with compassion.I can't imagine not having this CD in your library. And, if you can only buy one, this is it.Totally recommended. -- Dr. Lisa Love, Beyond the Secret ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Right Time, The Right Message
I am a well educated, modestly successful healthcare executive with a relatively stable life, in spite of the successes and failures that I have experienced in my five decades on the planet. As I recently grappled with compelling themes and questions that were an inevitable part of my transition into mid-life, and the second half of life, I found myself reflecting on the fact that, as an avid reader, I had gathered a great deal of valuable information over the years.Yet, I found myself disillusioned about how little transformation I had actually experienced as a result of my studies.

"On the Threshold of Transformation" came into my life at a time when I needed a "daily confrontational", not a daily devotional guide to spur me toward renewal of my commitment to strive for a more meaningful and mature perspective on the coming years. If you are concerned, as I am, about whether or not your life is moving toward integrity or despair, this remarkable collection of meditations will be indispensable to your journey!

I am tired of passing my pain to others around me. I am ready to grow up and transform my pain, to return to wholeness in the second half of life.I believe that focusing my prayer life around the themes and questions posed in this collection of meditations is already making a positive difference in my life. And, I believe that there are many men out there just like me, who would be open to such a transformation. Now is the right time, and this book is the right message!

I recommend these inspired writings with the deepest conviction that they will offer invaluable insights to any man who is ready to "man up" and really, really grow up...

I was sitting in awaiting room yesterday and this book was on the table next to me.I opened it to the meditation of the day and was blown away by what I read!

THE MALE JOURNEY: Shadow Boxing, Tuesday, September 7, 2010

It takes so much energy and effort to suppress what we find unacceptable in ourselves that we can have very little energy left for anything else. This is why some people exist in a stew of aimless anxiety, nameless dread, free-floating fear, generalized anger, and irritated exhaustion.Thses are all indications that we've placed a great portion of our unacceptable self in exile. We have no patience, no forgiveness, no mercy, but only harsh judgements. No gospel.

We then project our own sick symptoms onto the screen of our outer world and call it reality. We don't see the world as it is; we see the world through the prism of our anxiety, fear, and other rejected emotions. This is what creates the worlds of conspiracy theories, militia movements, and the hateful rantings of radio and TV personalities.People are largely fighting their own fears and denied shadow selves. If there is no real shadow boxing with the self, the boxing ring of life becomes scary indeed. This is much of our world, brothers.

What shadows am I fighting right now?

I fingered through the book as I waited for my appointment and, though I am a women, I could relate to many of the reflections.Very powerful and life transforming meditations! ... Read more

I really enjoyed this book. The authors are knowledgable and easy to relate to, and the ideas they give are reasonable and attainable. Unlike other books on anxiety..with long, drawn out physiological explanations and complicated methods to overcome, this book uses a more simple set of techniques that everyone can do.Real life examples of other anxiety sufferers are also very helpful.I would recommend this to anyone who has a problem with anxiety- it really helped me!

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful how to for calm and lowering anxiety
This book is more about anxiety than yoga, but a wonderful blend of the two. As an innovate book, it ranks at the top. It presents clinical information in a readable way, as well as stories about ordinary people using the techniques. Mary and Rick NurrieStearns are grounded in solid knowledge about life, yoga, and anxiety, with a graceful writing style that adds to the pleasure of the read. I would recommend it both for self-help, but also for clinicians working with the anxious client.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga for Anxiety
This book is not a how to do Yoga Book, per se. There are hunderds of books on different types of Yoga and how to do yoga. This book is a lovely source of knowledge for anyone who wishes to take care of their physical, mental and spiritual health. It is also for anyone who has experienced anxiety. It is written in a style of loving kindness and by Mary and Rick's examples it teaches you to have compassion and patience with yourself. This book teaches you valuable tools that anyone can use to put themselves in charge of anxiety forever. The idea is that you can take charge of anxiety without medication, or ingesting alcohol or other substances. If this appeals to you, then this is well worth your time and money. This book is for you.

Rick and Mary have done extensive research into the latest findings of Neuroscience. They have explained it in easy to understand language, so you do not need to have a degree in science or biology to understand what is written in their book. A foundation key that Rick and Mary explain is that scientists have found, that the action of repeated firings of neurons changes the wiring of the brain. This simply means you can change your mental wiring by what you think, and how often you think it. This is crucial in understanding what Mary and Rick are teaching in this book. They explain that through the repetition ofpractice of Yoga techniques, and verbal mantra, the brain has the capacity to incorporate these into a healthy response style for responding to stress and anxiety.

Inorder to deal with fear/anxiety, Rick and Mary's book catogorizes this process of becoming aware of what you are unaware of, into "the five capacities of the mind". This is in keeping with Yoga tradition. 1.) Memory which involves the storing and remembering of information. 2.) Imagination, which represents a creative side, eg. music, art, innovation, humor - but it can also scare you into thinking about "what might be - what could happen". 3.) Perception, your ability to process or take in color in your environment, sounds, flavors, smells and the ability to touch things. 4.) Sense of Identity, another function of our minds, which incorporates our experiences which make up our own story about who we are. Mary points out that these stories are not who you are but they can control how you feel about yourself and keep you stuck in both postive and negative perceptions about yourself and patterns of behavior. 5.) Intelligence, which in the western world refers to IQ, but is explained better by Rick and Mary as wisdom or inner knowing. Mary and Rick's book helps one to use Yoga to recognize the workings of your mind and to become aware of your minds patterns. This new kind of awareness helps you use detachment to gain more wisdom and freedom from past stories and experiences, both negative and postive ones, that have become part of your identity.

Mary and Rick explain how anxiety, phobia and trauma are related to irrational fears. They also help us look at the by product which can take control of our lives which are the needs for certainty and safety. They teach us to analyze our needs for safety. While taking steps to help us feel safer, they offers tools to build up a tolerance for uncertainty as we know life does not offer any of us absolutes.

Mary and Rick introduce meditation, breathe work, silent retreats and yoga practices that anyone can learn and perform in their own home. Mary and Rick's book demonstrates yoga poses that can be practiced for 10-15 minutes at home. Some poses can be utilized in your work environment to help you free your body from anxiety. This book is truly a gift of love to humanity.

I am a practicing psychologist who has been doing therapy with clients since 1988. While I have taught individuals self relaxation, I see thisbook offering a compulation of tools that are interconnected and that are self healing. This book offers aholistic approach of incorporating tools for a life style change that will result in a new approach to anxiety, as well as dealing with ones own identity and early programing. I am also a certified yoga instructor and find these poses safe and ones that can be self taught.

I would highly recommend this book to clients, students, family and friends. This is the best medicine yet and it does not require ingesting a pill or other substance. It requires a small amount of time and some self discipline, like brushing ones teeth. Pretty soon, you just do it, and you do not think about it. It just is.
