From the author: Objective: This study provides data on the psychometric characteristics of the German version of the European Addiction Severity Index (EuropASI). The ASI is a frequently used clinical and research instrument that measures problem severity among people with substance dependence. Method: The German ASI was used in a sample of 112 consecutively admitted male psychiatric inpatients seeking treatment for severe alcohol problems. The conceptual structure of the German ASI subscales was investigated by analyzing the intercorrelations of the severity ratings and composite scores. Internal consistency, interrater reliability and concurrent validity in terms of correlations with other assessment instruments were evaluated. Results: The German ASI subscales proved to be independent or moderately correlated (-0.17 [is less than] r [is less than] 0.34). Each correlation coefficient between corresponding severity ratings and composite scores was significant (p [is less than] .0005), ranging from r = 0.47 to r = 0.93. Reliability measures indicated moderate to good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha: 0.69-0.92) and moderate to excellent interrater reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.62-0.99). Validity was supported by significantly higher ratings in the alcohol section in alcohol dependent patients compared to patients without dependence (t = 2.99, 108 df, p = .004). Significant correlations (p [is less than] .001) were found between the alcohol use section and the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (r = 0.34 composite score and r = 0.44 severity rating) and between psychiatric status and the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (r = 0.55/0.51), supporting concurrent validity. Conclusions: The German version presented evidence of acceptable psychometric properties and its applicability in German-speaking countries could be confirmed. (J. Stud. Alcohol 61: 916-919, 2000)

From the author: Objective: Although the Short Index of Problems (SIP) is often used, little is known about the psychometric properties of the SIP in special populations. The present study seeks to determine the following: (1) whether it is possible to substitute items to enhance the psychometric properties of the SIP and (2) whether the SIR or improved scale, is as sensitive as the Drinker Inventory of Consequences (DrInC) to assess intervention effectiveness. Method: The sample consisted of 404 injured patients who were treated in the Emergency Department (ED) of a major teaching hospital that serves southern New England. Three approaches were used to guide development of the 3-month SIP-R, the potential alternative to the SIR Cronbach's alpha assessed intrascale reliability; hierarchical multiple regression assessed construct validity; performance of the scales assessing intervention change were compared to the total 3-month DrInC as a function of intervention using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Results: There was no evidence that changing the current SIP items will significantly improve performance. The 3-month SIP performed as well as the 3-month DrInC-2R in predicting 12-month DrInC scores and in determining intervention change at 12 months. Of the 45 DrInC items, 31 also predicted a difference across intervention groups. Conclusions: These results suggest there is no advantage to changing the current SIP items. The 3-month SIP is a psychometrically sound measure for assessing consequences of alcohol consumption in an ED sample and is almost as sensitive to intervention change as the full DrInC.

From the author: To examine the dimensionality of the Life Orientation Test (LOT) (a measure of optimism) in Hong Kong Chinese, a Chinese version of the LOT, a physical symptoms checklist, and the Chinese Affect Scale were administered to two separate samples of 230 undergraduates and 173 working adults. Exploratory factor analysis showed that the LOT was split between the optimism and the pessimism indices in both samples, but these two factors were not correlated differentially with either symptom reports or affective measures. On balance, the two indices do differ in one important aspect. The predictive power of the complete LOT was conferred mainly by the optimism rather than the pessimism index. These findings indicate that the two halves of the LOT measure the same construct of optimism, but the positive half or the optimism index does this more adequately. The two-factor solution was probably caused by difference in the direction of item wording rather than multidimensionality. Therefore, the scale should be treated more appropriately as unidimensional for the reason of parsimony.

From the author: Objective: Heavy college-student alcohol use and its resulting negative consequences represent a public-health problem on American college campuses. The Rutgers Alcohol Problem Index (RAPI) is a commonly used measure of alcohol problems among college students, but the psychometric properties of this measure never have been comprehensively assessed with the college-student population. The purpose of this research was to conduct reliability and validity analyses, particularly exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, on a dichotomously scored version of the measure. Method: Data were collected on 4,686 undergraduate students at a large, public university in the Northwest region of the United States and 438 students at a large, public university in the Northeast. Results: Exploratory factor analysis suggested that a three-factor model provided the best fit to the data. This finding was replicated via confirmatory factor analyses in two separate samples. The three factors were labeled Abuse/Dependence Symptoms, Personal Consequences, and Social Consequences. Each individual factor demonstrated adequate internal consistency and convergent validity. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that a dichotomously scored RAPI consists of three subfactors that are reliable and valid in identifying alcohol-related problems among college students.

From the author: Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between body mass index (BMI) and alcohol use and misuse in young adulthood in a sample of black and white female twins. Method: Cox proportional hazards and logistic regression models were used to examine the relationships between BMI category and first alcohol use, current weekly alcohol use, and current weekly heavy episodic drinking in 3,514 (14.06% black) young adult female twins. Analyses were conducted separately in black and white women. Results: After adjusting for relevant covariates, in white women obesity was protective against alcohol use (hazard ratio = 0.83; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.73-0.93) and against weekly drinking (odds ratio [OR] = 0.36; 95% CI: 0.24-0.53) and weekly heavy episodic drinking (OR = 0.51; 95% CI: 0.31-0.82) among ever drinkers compared with women of ideal weight. Overweight women living with their parents were less likely to be weekly drinkers (OR = 0.31; 95% CI: 0.16-0.61), whereas overweight women who were not living with their parents were less likely to be weekly heavy episodic drinkers (OR = 0.51; 95% CI: 0.31-0.82). Among black women, obesity was not associated with any of the drinking outcomes; however, black women who were overweight and who reported that the majority of their friends were not weekly drinkers had greater odds of reporting weekly drinking than those of ideal weight (OR = 2.91; 95% CI: 1.33-6.39). Conclusions: Obese white women were less likely to ever use alcohol, be weekly drinkers, or be weekly heavy episodic drinkers than their ideal-weight peers. Body weight may affect drinking behavior in young women, and this effect may differ by race. Future research is needed to identify mediators and moderators of this relationship as well as to explore racial differences in the effect of body weight on drinking behavior.

From the author: Objective: This study used data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) to test hypotheses relevant to the discriminative validity of a trichotomous family history of problem drinking index. Early onset substance use, adolescent antisocial behaviors and lifetime alcohol and illicit drug use were used as criterion variables. Method: Prospective, longitudinal survey data from over 9,000 young adult subjects (ages 23-30 yrs) in the NLSY archive were used to evaluate several hypotheses regarding familial risk of alcoholism. Results: General support for discriminant validity was indicated, as the high density familial risk group differed from the moderate- (paternal or maternal problem drinking only) and low-risk groups with regard to a somewhat earlier onset of marijuana use higher levels of antisocial behaviors in adolescence (especially substance-related offenses and property offenses) and higher levels of lifetime marijuana and cocaine use. The high- and moderate-risk groups differed from the low-risk group with regard to alcohol use and alcohol-disordered problems (e.g., negative consequences, dependency symptoms). Conclusions: Risk associated with high familial problem-drinking density includes an earlier onset of illicit substance use, higher rates of lifetime marijuana and cocaine use and more frequent adolescent antisocial behavior. The general pattern of the findings was robust for men and women and suggests that high-risk status may reflect both a high genetic loading and a high environmental risk loading. (J. Stud. From the supplier: Trichotomous family history of problem drinking index is a good indicator of high risk for alcohol and substance abuse in children of alcoholics (COAs). Data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth show that individuals from the high-risk group use marijuana and cocaine, and show anti-social behavior earlier than those from the low-risk group. Disinhibitory activities such as delinquency appears related to familial alcoholism. The trichotomous method is more sensitive than the dichotomous method for studying family history of alcoholism.

From the author: The Felder-Soloman Index of Learning Styles (ILS) has been a popular instrument for measuring learning styles of college students for the past two decades. Even though several researchers have translated the ILS into Chinese for their own studies, a Chinese version has not been standardized and evaluated, nor has anyone reported on its reliability and validity. Based on data collected from 2,748 students at a large private university in Taiwan, this study investigates the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the ILS. In addition, through factor analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis, problematic test items are identified for further modification. Results show that the reliability of each scale of the ILS has a pattern similar to that of previous studies. The study therefore investigates the identified problematic elements and discusses two key points: (1) the language and translation problems and (2) precision and design. In addition, results of the significant interaction effects of analysis of variance (ANOVA) for active/reflective and sensing/intuitive scales indicate the effect of college differences depends on the levels between genders. Moreover, in general, female students are significantly more intuitive and global and less visual than male students. Other detailed analysis of academic disciplines and gender on ILS are also reported.
