Product Description

Microoganisms are distributed across every ecosystem, and microbial transformations are fundamental to the operation of the biosphere. Microbial ecology is the study of this interaction between microorganisms and their environment, and arguably represents one of the most important areas of biological research. Yet for many years our study of microbial flora was severely limited: the primary method of culturing microorganisms on media allowed us to study only between 0.1 and 10% of the total microbial flora in any given environment.

Molecular Microbial Ecology gives a comprehensive guide to the recent revolution in the study of microorganisms in the environment. Details are given on molecular methods for isolating some of the previously uncultured and numerically dominant microbial groups. PCR-based approaches to studying prokaryotic systematics are described, including ribosomal RNA analysis and stable isotope probing. Later chapters cover DNA hybridisation techniques (including fluorescent in situ hybridisation), as well as genomic and metagenomic approaches to microbial ecology. Gathering together some of the world’s leading experts, this book provides an invaluable introduction to the modern theory and molecular methods used in studying microbial ecology.

This book presents most "hot" topics in today's marine microbiology. Background, current research and future directions for each area are described by top scientists.
Easy to read and understand; clear graphs and figures; lots of references.
I am a Ph.D. student in marine science and find that book very useful. It's a summary and review of what every student should know about marine microbiology. It's a must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, well-integrated book
"An excellent, well-integrated book that ranges from marine viruses to filamentous cyanophyceans and treats the processes mediated by them. The aerobic heterotrophic bateria in the open ocean and the biogeochemcial role of the assemblages are emphasized in most of the 16 chapters. The authors, none of them a 'pure' microbiologist but all attuned to biogeochemical questions, provide modern reviews of the basics, but ample space is given to open issues. About two-thirds of the very many references date from 1990 to 1999." --Karl Banse, University of Washington

Product Description

Natural microbial habitats include various interfaces--liquid-liquid, gas-liquid, solid-liquid, and solid-gas. An interface, the boundary between two phases, has physical and chemical properties that differ from those of either phase. Bacteria, yeasts, and algae often concentrate at interfaces, and the ability of microorganisms to exploit resources in their environment may be markedly affected by the nature of the available interfaces. Included within the realm of microbial activity at interfaces are such wide-ranging topics as predator-prey relations, tooth decay, gastrointestinal tract infections, mating contact, marine fouling, adsorptive bubble processes, oil degradation, rhizosphere associations, and bacterium-clay interactions.

In this book, bacteria are treated as living colloidal systems, and the behavior of microorganisms at interfaces is analyzed on the basis of this concept. Nonspecific physical and chemical forces acting on microorganisms at interfaces are described and related to biological factors determining the distribution of and interaction between microorganisms in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The final chapter describes specific microbe-microbe, microbe-plant, and microbe-animal interfacial interactions.

Although laboratory studies of cultured microorganisms are essential in assessing their potential capabilities, an individual microbial species in a natural habitat is confronted by physical, chemical, and biological interactions rarely encountered under pure culture conditions. Interfaces are important aspects of microbial ecosystems, and this study of the influence of interfaces on natural habitats is an important and original contribution to microbial ecology.

Product Description
Microbial ecology is the relationship of microorganisms with one another and with their environment. It concerns the three major domains of life - Eukaryota, Archaea, and Bacteria - as well as viruses. Microorganisms, by their omnipresence, impact the entire biosphere. They are present in virtually all of our planet's environments, including some of the most extreme, from acidic lakes to the deepest ocean, and from frozen environments to hydrothermal vents. Microbes, especially bacteria, often engage in symbiotic relationships (either positive or negative) with other organisms, and these relationships affect the ecosystem. One example of these fundamental symbioses are chloroplasts, which allow eukaryotes to conduct photosynthesis.Chloroplasts are considered to be endosymbiotic cyanobacteria, a group of bacteria that are thought to be the origins of aerobic photosynthesis. Some theories state that this invention coincides with a major shift in the early earth's atmosphere, from a reducing atmosphere to an oxygen-rich atmosphere. This book presents new and important research in the field. ... Read more

Product Description
Microbes are key drivers of the world's ecosystems. The vast majority of the world's diversity and metabolic potential lies within micro-organisms, yet we are just beginning to understand and utilize this ultimate resource of biological diversity. Critical to our exploration of the microbial world are methods that allow for the analysis of organisms that are invisible to our eyes, difficult to distinguish from each other, and often impossible to grow using available culture methods. The field of microbial ecology has been revolutionized in the past two decades by the introduction of molecular methods into the toolbox of the microbial ecologist. This molecular arsenal has helped to unveil the enormity of microbial diversity across the breadth of the earth's ecosystems, and has revealed that we are only familiar with a very small minority of the organisms that carry out key microbial functions in diverse habitats. The Molecular Microbial Ecology Manual, Second Edition (MMEM-II) provides a detailed and user-friendly description of the methods that have made this revolution in microbial ecology possible. However, what is perhaps most exciting about MMEM-II is that it contains a large number of new chapters, highlighting the newest trends in microbial ecology research, which seek to provide more quantitative and statistically robust data, and means of coupling microbial identity and function. In addition, the majority of the proven methods described in MMEM's first version have undergone significant revisions to provide the most up-to-date applications available. The state-of-the-art methods described in MMEM-II have not only been provided by experts in the field, but in most cases by the laboratories that actually first developed and applied the methods, thus providing the MMEM-II user with unique first-hand tips and insight. The new on-line format available for MMEM-II should also add to the utility of MMEM-II by allowing users to search for key topics throughout the manual, skip between interrelated chapters at the push of a button, and by providing immediate availability to protocol updates and new chapters dedicated to future technical developments. ... Product Description
Cyanobacteria make a major contribution to world photosynthesisand nitrogen fixation, but are also notorious for causing nuisancessuch as dense and often toxic `blooms' in lakes and the ocean. TheEcology of Cyanobacteria: Their Diversity in Time and Spaceis the first book to focus solely on ecological aspects of theseorganisms. Its twenty-two chapters are written by some thirty authors, who are leading experts in their particular subject. The book begins with an overview of the cyanobacteria -- orblue-green algae, for those who are not specialists -- thenlooks at their diversity in the geological record and goes on todescribe their ecology in present environments where they playimportant roles. Why is one of the key groups of organisms in thePrecambrian still one of the most important groups of phototrophstoday? The importance of ecological information for rationalmanagement and exploitation of these organisms for commercial andother practical purposes is also assessed. Accounts are provided ofnuisances as well as the ecology of the commercially successfulSpirulina and the role of cyanobacteria in ecosystem recoveryfrom oil pollution. Many chapters include aspects of physiology, biochemistry, geochemistry and molecular biology where these help generalunderstanding of the subject. In addition there are three chaptersdealing specifically with molecular ecology. Thirty-two pages ofcolour photos incorporate about seventy views and light micrographs. These features make the book valuable to a wide readership, includingbiologists, microbiologists, geologists, water managers andenvironmental consultants.
