Product Description
The Vietnam War has generated significant diplomatic and cultural influences on US foreign policy. This book explores the construction and interaction of US collective memory with the politics of US intervention since the late 1960s. On the one hand, the United States drew lessons that after Vietnam it had to demonstrate its resolve and credibility through the continued use of force, yet there were considerable domestic constraints to doing so generated from collective memories. On the other hand, military power was one of the areas in which the US still remained supreme and this was especially important at a time when economic competition was felt more acutely. It depended on continued engagement and intervention, just at a time when its collective memory and external opposition was growing. The contributors look at the formation, sites and reception of US collective memory, situated within the debate on the politics of identity. The significance of this concerns the power of the US to intervene and at times to go to war (beyond the strict constitutional remit). But it is also about the evolution of strategies adapted by the United States to deal with the collective memory of defeat in Vietnam. "US Collective Memory, Intervention and Vietnam" will be of great interest to students of US foreign policy, US politics and strategic studies and international relations in general. ... Read more

Product Description

Reviewing recently declassified CIA documents, this book provides a balanced but critical discussion of the contribution of American intelligence officials to the Nuremberg war crimes trials.

Giving new details of how senior Nazi war criminals, such as SS General Karl Wolff, were provided with effective immunity deals, partly as a reward for their wartime cooperation with US intelligence officials, including Allen Dulles, former CIA Director, the author also discusses the role of such officials in mobilizing the unique resources of a modern intelligence agency to provide important trial testimony and vital documentary evidence.

Nazi War Crimes, US Intelligence and Selective Prosecution at Nuremberg argues that both war crimes prosecutors and intelligence officials can engage in mutually beneficial collaborations, but that both sides need to recognize and appreciate the problems that may arise from the fact that these institutions are required to operate according to different, and in some cases contradictory, agendas.

This topical book gives those studying, or with interests in, international law, criminal law and history an insight into the debates surrounding international war crimes, within the context of the Nuremberg war crimes trials.

Product Description
Colonel William Winthrop singularly was the most influential person in developing the military law of the United States. A half century ago, the Supreme Court tendered to Winthrop the title, _The Blackstone of Military Law,_ meaning simply that his influence outshone all others. He has been cited over twenty times by the highest court and well over a thousand times by other federal courts, state courts, and legal texts. In this, he surpasses most other legal scholars, save Joseph Story, John Marshall, or Felix Frankfurter. ... Read more

Product Description
After the Vietnam War the US Army had to rebuild itself while the US government had to reconsider its military intervention strategy. This book examines how it was done and how this has affected US intervention policy, from the victory of the Gulf War to the failure of Somalia, before examining the Bosnian and Kosovo interventions.

This volume sets out to analyze the changes in US military intervention strategy by examining two separate issues: the nature of the US Army as it rebuilt itself after the Vietnam War, and the attempts by the US to establish criteria for future military interventions. Richard Lock-Pullan first argues that US strategy traditionally relied upon national mobilization to co-ordinate political aims and military means; he subsequently analyses how this changed to a formula of establishing militarily achievable political objectives prior to the use of force. Drawing on a vast body of strategic culture and military innovation literature, the author demonstrates that the strategic lessons were a product of the rebuilding of the Army's identity as it became a professional all-volunteer force and that the Army's new doctrine developed a new 'way of war' for the nation, embodied in the Air Land Battle doctrine, which changed the approach to strategy.

The book finally gives a practical analysis of how the interventions in Panama and the Gulf War vindicated this approach and brought a revived confidence in the use of force while more recent campaigns in Somalia, Kosovo and Bosnia exposed its weaknesses and the limiting nature of the Army's thinking.

This book will be of interest to students of strategic studies, international relations and American politics as well as to military professionals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outside view of the U.S. Army from Vietnam to Iraq
Vietnam left as many wounds in the structure of the U.S. Army as it did in the American culture. Among these was a wide spread drug abuse problem, a large and widespread negative view towards military authority, and suspicion that the need for a military was over.

In the years since the military and our culture has changed. Minor events like Grenada and Panama help to restore the faith of the Army in itself and that of the public. It became clear that the need for a military has not passed.

During these years the Army changed from a force requiring conscription to an all Volunteer force with considerably more professionalism than before. Other events such as the bassing of the bomber generals that ran the Air Force in World War II to the Fighter Mafia that developed more recently.

These years formed the foundation for the Army that began operations in Afghanistan and Iraq after the 9/11 attack. This book examines the changes that have occurred in not only the U.S. Army, but the political and social climate that drove these changes.

The author is British and is a Senior Lecturer at King's College, London in the Defence Studies Department. As such, he can see with perhaps more clarity than we who lived through these years. His analysis is most interesting, this is a very worthwhile book as we view the changes happening as a result of the intervention in Iraq and the political uproar that grows louder as the time increases. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 'Colossus ' in a nutshell
This article contains the major thesis of Ferguson's work, 'Colossus'. It argues that the United States is an Empire in denial of its historical role and responsibility. He argues that the United States should be more, and not less involved in the world , especially in economic and cultural ventures which aim at bringing greater freedom to the world.
In opposition to those who criticize the US for being over- extended and interfering, he argues that the U.S. needs to recognize its unique position and power and use it appropriately. ... Read more

Product Description
“Terrorist Among Us” is a detailed analysis on the pending threat to America by Domestic/Home Grown terrorist. We will examine prior terrorist incidents that have come from within our own country and from abroad. Focus specifically on the fact that government must concentrate a substantial amount of their efforts on the fight against domestic terrorism and not only the possible foreign terrorist threat.

The emphasis in “Terrorist Among Us” is on terrorism as a domestic phenomena, with
materials relating to past domestic hot spots, as well as brief historic summaries. This
title will also provide global coverage and how it plays into the domestic/home grown
terrorist facing our nation. This book in no way is predicting any form of terrorist attack,
whether domestic or otherwise, in the future on the United States or its interest.

The purpose of this book is to analyze Public Law 10 United States Code, Section 654, Policy Concerning Homosexuality in the Armed Forces. This law was enacted in 1993 and is commonly referred to as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Harass, Don't Pursue" which further defined the policy of homosexual service in the United States military. The research looked at historical societal norms and the evolution of acceptance in regards to homosexuals, the economic and lost opportunity costs associated with not allowing homosexuals to serve in the United States military by essentially limiting the qualified available candidate pool, as well as the policies and impacts of open homosexual service in other nations militaries that are allies of the United States. ... Product Description
The Military Police (MP) Corps supports the commander across the full spectrum of military operations. This manual is the foundation for all MP doctrine as it relates to this support. It communicates to all levels of leadership and staffs how the MP provide a flexible and lethal force capable of operating across this full spectrum. As the keystone manual, it identifies what the MP train on and how their forces are organized and equipped in support of all Army echelons. Additionally, this manual provides guidance that can be used by United States (US) Army service schools, students, sister services, and federal agencies. When the Army developed the Active Defense strategy in 1976, the US was facing the Cold War scenario of central Europe. Military strategy and doctrine were related to a single, focused threat that revolved around the countries in the Warsaw Pact. We were an outnumbered and technically inferior force facing an armor-dominated European battlefield. The MP Corps supported the Active Defense strategy by tailoring its forces to meet the threat. In 1982, when the AirLand Battle strategy was developed, US forces were still outnumbered, but were no longer technically inferior. Still threat-based and focused on a central European conflict, the AirLand Battle strategy used a relatively fixed framework suited to the echeloned attack of soviet-style forces. It delineated and clarified the levels of war; emphasized closed, concerted operations of airpower and ground forces; balanced the offense and the defense; and highlighted the synchronization of close, deep, and rear operations. MP doctrine kept pace with the Army's AirLand Battle strategy by supporting the battlefield commander through four basic missions-battlefield circulation and control, area security (AS), enemy prisoner of war (EPW), and law and order (L&O). ... Product Description
In 1996, the United States (US) Army Military Police (MP) Corps restructured its four combat support (CS) missions into the following five CS functions. These functions adequately describe MP capabilities in support of US forces deployed worldwide. ? Maneuver and mobility support. ? Area security. ? Law and order (L&O). ? Internment/resettlement (I/R). ? Police intelligence operations. Field Manual (FM) 3-19.40 depicts the doctrinal foundation, principles, and processes that MP will employ when dealing with enemy prisoners of war (EPWs), civilian internees (CIs), US military prisoner operations, and MP support to civil-military operations (populace and resource control [PRC], humanitarian assistance [HA], and emergency services [ES]). FM 3-19.40 is not a standalone manual, and it must be used in combination with other publications. These publications are pointed out throughout the manual, and a consolidated list is provided in the bibliography. This manual provides guidance that can be used by US Army service schools, students, sister services, and federal agencies. It is fully compatible with current joint, multinational, and interagency doctrine. ... Read more
