Product Description
Practicing Virtues is about learning to be good in the distinct moral worlds of Quaker and military boarding schools. Both types of schools bind their communities with shared codes of conduct, the military schools' conservative tradition emphasizing discipline and hard work, the Quaker schools' liberal tradition favoring tolerance and togetherness. At the heart of this contrast are two sets of virtues: pride, loyalty, and leadership among the cadets; simplicity, equality, and concern among the students at Quaker schools.During the course of a year Kim Hays lived in six schools, attending classes and staff meetings, sharing meals and informal conversation, and participating in the nonacademic side of boarding-school life.Despite the outward contrast between the Quaker and military settings, Hays found surprising similarities. Both systems cherish individualism while encouraging group identification and service to the school community. Hays shows that orderliness, obedience, and harmony do not in themselves create a vital moral environment. To reach that goal, teachers, students, and administrators need to disagree, question rules, and fight for change. This book has much to say about the role of education in developing moral responsibility. Every educator, student, and parent who cares about the future of American schooling will find valuable lessons here. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Curious Juxtapositions
While I know very little about Quaker boarding schools, I have been studying the traditional boys private boarding military school (middle and high school level) in the U.S. for the past ten years. Very few of myfindings or conclusions agree with anything I find in this book.I believethe author probably understands Quaker schools far better than militaryschools.A curious study, but not recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars A penetrating book.
While academic in nature, this book is a facinating comparison between two very different-seeming places. It is well written and very understandable, while still raising very interesting points of view. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A book with reading
No Excuse Leadership is an excellant account of personal triumphs of everday individuals who enlisted in military service, challanged Ranger School, and graduated from this outstanding leadership course. I am not a Ranger, but did serve in the armed forces, and believe that these personal accounts of Ranger school demonstrates that people can over come physical obstacles and mental boundries to accomplish their goal. This book will motivate people to stay focused so they can overcome lifes challenges. One Ranger I work with says that "commitment" was one thing that Ranger School instilled in him and still lives by. You can read about these Ranger students "commitment" as the tackle this well respected school.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Have No Excuse!
You have no excuse, not to read this book! As a 20 year vertan of the US Navy I know a little bit about Leadership and Teamwork. Brace Barber examines the complexities of Leadership and shows everyone how it is teamwork, team building and faith that makes a great leader. By Far the best book on leadership for the Corporate and Military world I have ever read. You do not need to be in or have served in the military to learn something from this book. For those who equate military leadership with not having anything to do with the corporate world, you are sadly mistaken. I have paralelled my personal corporate and military experiences with those that Brace has written into his book and I was amazed by the similarities and the lessons I learned through them. In some cases the lesson I have learned was to make better choices in my leadership style.A real Leader is also the Servant to those being led. Brace illustrates that clearly here!

5-0 out of 5 stars A "MUST READ" FOR PARENTS
As the mother of a December 2005 Ranger School graduate, I recommend this book to parents. This book helped me to understand and support my son during Ranger School. I would not have known HOW to support him without this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is top shelf.
I did a stint in the military in an artillery battery a long time ago, and now I enjoy middle age complancency, namely beer and barbeques in my back yard with my better two thirds and my friends and family. This book is top shelf. No, I was never a Ranger, in fact, I'm not even the patch of a Ranger's ass. But
the mental and physical toughness of these men are unbelievable.
The stories, ALL TRUE, will inspire you if you aspire to be the
elite and the best soldier on God's green earth. To you hopefuls
out there who want to wear a Ranger Tab, my hat's off to you and by all means get your hands on this book. Rangers lead the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I am planning on going through Ranger School next year. To kind of prepare (though you can't really prepare for it) I have been doing and extreme amount of PT. I have also been gathering as much material as I can read so I can toughen myself mentally as well as physically. This book is by far one of the best I have read!

I have not gone through Ranger School but the detail in which these Rangers describe their experience makes you feel as though you are an RI (without the yelling) watching these Rangers progress from phase to phase. You can almost feel the elements they are exposed to...the snow, the endless rain, the massive heat, no sleep, no food. You can almost hear the firing of guns, the helicopters, the rivers roaring and anything else they experienced during Ranger School.

As if that wasn't enough the way they have applied what they learned to everyday life is incredible. They live life as though they were in Ranger School everyday. Sure you get to eat and sleep, but they are always pushing their limits further than anyone can ever dream. They know nothing but themselves can hold them back. They have the confidence in themselves to continue on when times are good and when times are rough.
I dream for the day when I proudly wear that tab! ... Read more

Product Description
In the future, Humanity is in a seemingly endless war with an alien race. The struggle is dominated by giant war machines called Gear. Only the best and the brightest are allowed to drive these behemoths. The process of elimination begins in junior high. Thirteen-year-old Teresa Gottlieb has just entered the most prestigious military academy, known to all as Gear School, to try and become one of those elite. But on top of all the usual troubles that a seventh grader has to put up with - boys, social cliques, hellish instructors - she also has to deal with three-story-tall robots and alien invasions! Teresa needs to learn that when the bell rings, the adventure starts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the school we all should have gone to
I had purchased another of Adam Gallardo's books, "100 Girls" and liked it, so I decided to buy "Gear School" and frankly, I liked it even more. It's a straight up aliens versus mankind book, with the twist of young, dare I say nubile? teens at the controls of huge, heavily armed warships. I loved the panel where an alien enters earth's space through a rift/unknown teleportation device. It's frickin' ominous and scary and perfectly drawn. I also grooved on the story's blend of reality (they're teens; they rebel, don't always obey orders, get frightened and fail tasks sometimes, etc). They are not robo-girls. But when it comes time to fight, at the end, some a** kicking takes place. and not without casualties. I love a good sci-fi epic and this is one. There will be more to this series so I am eagerly awaiting the sequels. In the meantime, buy one already! It's a good one.

4-0 out of 5 stars PILOTING A GEAR
Sometime in the future, humans are at war with an alien race that pilots giant insectoid ships. The only way to fight this threat is to use "Gears", highly advanced fighter planes. 13-year-old Teresa Gottlieb is enrolled in the highly prestigious Gear School, which functions as a training ground for future Gear pilots. Though she is very devoted to her studies, she isn't having much luck in the pilot simulations. She's always getting chewed out by her superior, Captain Tsing, for her incompetence. Besides the academic and military challenges, she also has to put up with a bully named Becky who is trying to quash any hopes of a crush she has on another student named Ben Castillo. When she overhears some of the faculty reporting that the aliens might have some sort of teleportation power, she and her best friend Moira laugh it off. That is, until a large alien ship rips a gash in the sky during her first actual Gear flight!

I picked this book up on a whim at the comic store, owing to its in your face homage to manga and anime. I mean, you can't get more Japanese than having the fate of the world in the hands of a bunch of young kid pilots that have never even been in battle before! Can anyone say Evangelion, Stratos 4, Stellvia? The art is great and the panel layout and pace is done in a much slower pace than most American comics. Both the writing and the art allows for some much needed moments of reflection and depth by the main character. There is no volume number on this book, so I hope it's not just a one-shot because it feels like a beginning, not an end. This is a great read for girls and guys alike and strikes a middle road between American comics and manga. ... Read more
