The exploration of the upper atmosphere was given a jump start in the United States by German V-2 rockets - Hitler's "vengeance weapon" - captured at the end of World War II. The science performed with these missiles was largely determined by the missile itself, such as learning more about the medium through which a ballistic missile travels. Groups rapidly formed within the military and military-funded university laboratories to build instruments to investigate the Earth's upper atmosphere and ionosphere, the nature of cosmic radiation, and the ultraviolet spectrum of the Sun. Few, if any, members of these research groups had prior experience or demonstrated interests in atmospheric, cosmic-ray, or solar physics. Although scientific agendas were at first centered on what could be done with missiles and how to make ballistic missile systems work, reports on techniques and results were widely publicized as the research groups and their patrons sought scientific legitimacy and learned how to make their science an integral part of the national security state. The process by which these groups gained scientific and institutional authority was far from straightforward and offers useful insight both for the historian and for the scientist concerned with how specialties born within the military services became part of post-war American science. ... This book is O.K.It covers the same material that so may people have covered in the past.I was looking for something to cover some new material, but this book is some what of a rewind of the some old material.Thanks.

Out of all the 30 something books I've read the last year on sniper or sharp shooting this is the first and only one to spend more than 20 pages getting up to the Civil War, it spends 40 at least getting up to flintlock use! Great back round book ! FW

Pegler covers the evolution of the long-gun from the musket to the rifle, from the muzzle loader to the breech loader, from the matchlock to the wheel lock to the flintlock to the percussion cap to the modern high-powered cartridge. This book is a well told history of the American sniper from before the sharpshooters of the Civil War to the contemporary American military sniper, with a focus on the rifles and scopes used at each point in history.

A very good beginning, but failed to keep it till the end, and not really military
I like Part One (4 chapters) of this book discussing Motivation, Discipline, Confidence and Sacrifice very much. As far as I can recall, there's no other self improvement book I had read (tens of them) that emphasized so much the equivalence of discipline to habit building through tough training/exercise, and committment to sacrifice. The self-question sessions named "Train Tough Challenge" after each chapter are quite intelligent and helpful. However, I am sorry to comment that the other three parts or 12 chapters were much less attractive. The author did not write as skilfully and vividly as the average self help book writers. He should have compensated so through exhaustive elaboration on his military/business analogy to differentiate his book from its sea of competitiors. He had done so in Part One, but failed to follow through till the end. Though he had quoted Einsenhower, Patton and some other war heros on his book, those stories seemed disorganised and irrelevant to the contexts where the stories were told.

I am afraid that you will not be satisfied if you really want to learn "the military way" for your own or your business. With all due respect, "Victory" by Brian Tracy is a much better choice.

Correct , effective, doable
This book fired me up! I read a lot of books on personal development as I am the host for a radio show that focuses on personal and business success. Unless the book has good stuff in it, I won't feature it. "Operation Excellence" is more than just good. It's got a "charge" to it that ignites the spirit to believe that most anything CAN be achieved and accomplished in. That's why I wanted to write this review.

The anecdotes are perfect serve well to help make Lt. Col. Bender's points crystal clear. The writing style is comfortable and smooth. I am very impressed with "Operation Excellence". I must be. I rarely write reviews for books I feature on my show on Amazon, or any other internet book site. So when I do it means I am VERY enthused about what I believe it offers to everyday people looking for valid, strong, understandable, doable keys for Living In Success.
