"In my 30 years of performing professionally...I have not spoken a single word as an actor, nor have I had the urge to do so."So writes international mime theater artist and teacher Stefan Niedzialkowski in this inside look at the mental and physical ingredients of an art form that communicates beyond the word.Actors and acting schools find the book to be an outstanding educational tool.

Marcel Marceau writes in the foreword: "His words about mime...will be of interest to anyone who cares about mime, and they will be very important to young students.BEYOND THE WORD will guide those who are interested in...[the] creative process, as artist or as teacher. ... Read more

Product Description
Modern mime, which has emerged as a major art form has its roots in the theatre work of Jacques Copeau in Paris in the 1920s. Copeau looked for a remedy to the ills of the theatre of his day by turning to the golden age of Greek theatre, the Noh and Kabuki, and commedia dell'arte. Here Copeau found an emphasis on the expressive potential of the actor's whole body, rather than just the voice. This series aims to introduce the reader to major 19th and 20th century dramatists, movements and new forms of drama throughout the world. This study examines the contributions of Etienne Decroux, Barrault, Marceau and Lecoq to the development of mime and post modern mime. ... Read more

Product Description
Annette Bercut Lust has spent a lifetime developing the knowledge to produce this definitive work on mime. One of the few studies covering the historical flow of mime from its beginnings to postmodern movement theatre, this book explores the evolution of mime and pantomime from the Greeks to the twentieth century, depicting the role of mime in dance, clowning, the cinema, and verbal theatre throughout the centuries. It is also an in-depth study of twentieth-century mime masters, including Jacques Lecoq, Etienne Decroux, Jean-Louis Barrault, and Marcel Marceau. In addition to defining and tracing the history of mime, Lust documents present-day training programs in North America and Europe, providing contact addresses and information on mime festivals and centers. A filmography listing mime and mime-related films and an extensive bibliography contribute to the usefulness of the book. There is also a chart tracing the origins of mime to the present and a chart demonstrating exponents of the various styles and schools of mime. With over sixty illustrations, this worldwide study is indispensable for the student, teacher, or fan of mime. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a masterpiece!
This book is the one that made me decide that miming is not just an art; it's a way of life.

Many a lonely hour I have spent in my dorm room hoping that someone could understand my need to mime.

But upon reading this book, I realized that I do not need to hide my mimicry. I am a mime and damn proud of it. Once I graduate, I plan to spend most of my free time doing street mime in NYC. I would urge parents to have their children read this book. Perhaps then they too can become like me, a proud mime!

I looked into this book because I needed Christian material for a mime. The skits in this book are parables and stories from the Bible that are acted out with a narrator or at least 1 person talking. This may be all right for a program in a church setting. But a mime working at a festival is often working alone or with another mime. And a mime is expected to "Respect the WHITE".In other words a mime is never to talk while he/she is wearing the white makeup. The skits in this book were good, but were no help for what I needed and I felt misled by the title. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 101 is not enough
David Farmer's 101 Drama Games and Activities is an invaluable resource for any theater teacher. The games and activities are clear, succinct and easy to adapt according to your own class' needs.Every time I go through it, I find another game or activity that I can use as a theater specialist in an elementary school. If I had to nit pick about it, I would suggest that the cross referencing to other games included the page number so I could go directly to it, instead of having to search for it.Since many of the titles have similar words in them, it can get a bit confusing, but that's seriously nit picking, and of course, after I'm finished with it, I want more (which is a real compliment).Thank you, David, for all the work that went into creating such a versatile guide for theater teachers!

5-0 out of 5 stars really useful resource
A really useful book of drama games - with games suitable for drama groups, schools and as general ice-breakers for classes and groups. I purchased the book after attending one of David's workshops in London and was pleased to find some of the games that he used in the workshop. I have used some of the games (e.g. Traffic Lights, Grandma's Footsteps and Clap Together) with my pre-school group and also used some of the games as warm-ups for my drama group at art school. The book is laid out clearly and is really easy to use too.

5-0 out of 5 stars African-Amerian theatre, African-american History, African-American music history
This is the most comprehensive and accurate book on the subject that I have seen. As a researcher in the field of music and African-American history, I was delighted to find it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's all here - slavery to european, amateur to professional
Many of us take for granted the ability to go out on the town and enjoy a play about African Americans. Such plays as A Raisin in the Sun, Dream Girls, and The Piano Lesson have found their way into the hearts of many a theater goer and into the cultural makeup of this country. However, the making of these plays would not have been possible if not for the struggle and sacrifices of many theatrical pioneers. A History of African American Theatre by Errol G. Hill and James V. Hatch is an extensive anthology of all types of African American theatre that gives a wonderful historical perspective that we can use to interpret some of what we see today. The book includes information on minstrels, vaudeville, cabaret acts, musicals, and opera. It's the complete historical reference for the African American theatre lover.

In truth, this book also was exciting to some of my friends who are more history buffs than theatre lovers.I also confess to being very impressed with the author, Mr. Hill, who was the foremost historical scholar in the African American and Caribbean theatre fields and produced and directed more than 120 plays and pageants during a life recently cut short by cancer. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting him, he clearly was a giant!

The book's appeal - like the book itself - has great breadth & depth.

Product Description
The reader will find collected in this volume the thoughts of Etienne Decroux, who is above all, a man of the theatre: these take the form of lectures that he delivered in Europe and the United States; articles from magazines, unpublished essays, and notes he prepared for his classes. After he discusses the origins of the art of mime, Decroux shows how it differs from the ancient art of pantomime; he then compares it to dance and to theatre, formulating a doctrine for it, and demonstrating its relevance to actors of any type of theatre.

These reflections, along with the working texts and photographs of different productions Decroux directed, bear witness to the unique contributions of the man who is considered the prime force behind the renaissance of mime in the world today.

Etienne Decroux s life work in the theatre began at Jacques Copeau s School, the Vieux Colombier. From 1926 to 1934 he acted in many plays under the direction of Charles Dullin, Louis Jouvet, Gaston Baty, Antonin Arteaud and others. Starting in 1932, he also appeared in several movies, working with such directors as Marcel Carne and Pierre Prevert. In 1940 he founded his school of mime in Paris and started his own company which performed all over the world. In 1943, he became Professor of Mime at the Theatre in Milan, as well as in Sweden, in Switzerland, and at the New School and New York University in the United States. ... Read more

I checked this book out because it was considered one of the best overviews of Artaud's philosophy.I think it hits the mark well.I have no idea who wrote that last review, but he's out of his mind.I found this book thought provoking and revealing, and a good foray into studying the mind of a rather complex artist.
