A rich, suspenseful story that happens to be a Western
Grabs you right from the start, with a style that initially seems lean and stark, but which paints vivid pictures in your mind, quickens your pulse, and leaves an indelible impression.The movie does not do the book justice.This is a stunning novel.It combines all the best, and most credible, aspects of contemporary Westerns.The characters are unique, real, and affecting.What an amazing book.

A western, yet not an old western
Originally published as The Last Ride, this was made into a movie with this new title. A "western", yet not an "old western". This novel examines a father-daughter relationship with the setting in the uncivilized West. It carefully examines the overall role of women in the West; carefully because of the subtlety of how it accomplishes this. Maggie is a heroine for all time. The novel also builds an understanding of the native Indian cultural ways for the reader.Enjoy!

Excellant Book
This is an excellant book for anyone who likes westerns or Native Americans. The character of Samuel Jones is unique. He was my favorite character in the book. I believe that Thomas Eidson did a great job presenting all of his characters and their backgrounds. Being a writer myself I know that the presentation of characters means a lot to the reader. As for this book being a movie, which I bought the movie also but have not had time to watch it, all movies that come from books differ from the book itself.

A great contemporary Western!
Formerly titled THE LAST RIDE, author Thomas Eidson mixes the concepts of Grace, Justice, Hope, Pennance and Family with the age old Western genre elements of Wilderness, Violence, Horses, Savagery and Strength and creates a great contemporary Western.

The characters of Samuel Jones and his daughter Maggie and grandaughters Lily and Dot are destined to become classic figures in the Western pantheon. They are flawed to be sure, but endowed with healthy portions of intelligence, resolve and spiritual endownment. Eidson brilliantly creates strong women characters, deftly able to bridge the femine nurturing instinct with the warrior spirit- perhaps his greatest achievement with this book. He also uses his narrative to explore, challenge the concept of, and define the notion of "Family"- both extended and nuclear.

THE LAST RIDE (now called THE MISSING), ventures into the bloody, eerie and mythical territory of Carmac McCarthy and Larry McMurtry. It is not a book for the faint of heart or weak of heart.

On a personal note, I really value Eidson's willingness to confront the issues of Christian values as well as Native American spiritualism and finding the common ground between them. It is rare to find literary characters so invovled with an active Faith.

A most worthy read.

Great Read!!!!!
I read this book when I was 12 or so and loved it(even though I didn't understand It)!Now I have been scouring all the libraries in search of this book(i'm 15 just to mention).I finally looked on the internet and have just ordered it.I always loved the imagery in this book and have started making an animation of this story(I'll ask for permission If I can get enough support to actually finish it!).I think this would be a fantastic movie(If there was a good director[say the one from bladerunner]).If you have never read this book ,I suggest you get it.Please Email me if you think I should finish this animation or to tell me to give up!linkenobi@sbcglobal.net

Echoing others...
I first read this book when I was 11 and I have to echo some others when I say I loved it but perhaps didn't grasp all of it at the time. I recently tracked down a used copy and I am re-reading it right now. I think it is great and would make a great movie, perhaps on the Sci-Fi channel. Does anyone know if this has been made into a movie? Parts of the book may be dated now, but as far as characters and story-telling I think it still holds up.

How could this book go out of print?
I read this book over 15 years ago and have remembered it ever since.The sadness of our earth, so sick and dying because of man's carelessness,would be unbearable if not for the hope, though thousands of years away, ofnew life.I'm trying to track down this book for my sons, though they areonly 5 years old now.I know they'll enjoy it themselves in about 8 - 10years.Highly recommend!

A childhood favorite still holds up
This book was one of my childhood favorites. I re-read it recently and was happy that it still holds up. I really enjoyed it.

The earth is dying. We have used up all its natural resources. There is barely enough oxygen to sustain life. Food is rationed; most of it is soy based. Predictions aren't good. Maybe the earth can sustain life for another five years?

Amazing!

a pretty good book
I liked this book,it's the story of a girl who has a normal life until she discovers that her ex-best friend Abby has gone missing and (wait for it!) that she was the last person to see her before she disappeared.With that the story unfolds and we learn about her life before,how she was bullied and how her friendship with Abby fell apart. It's a good story,I would recommend it to anyone aged 11 and up.

Abby is missing long before she disappears at the beginning of Missing Abby by Lee Weatherly. Narrated by Abby's former-best-friend, Emma, the plot examines how their friendship deteriorated in the past while looking at the events surrounding Abby's disappearance in the present.

This novel, Weatherly's second, uses Abby's disappearance to tell Emma's story. The novel is told in chapters, one for each day after Abby is reported missing. As the story moves farther away from that day, the focus shifts from wondering what happened to Abby as readers begin to wonder what happened between the two girls. Because at thirteen, they are still girls--a fact that is not always obvious from the narration that seems to sound more like the voice of a seventeen-year-old.

Through a strange coincidence, Emma is the last person to see Abby before she gets off a local bus and vanishes. When Emma has to report everything she remembers about that day to the police she also starts to remember their old friendship. Anger often flares up through the worry Emma shows for Abby. Weatherly handles these conflicting emotions well, her narration making it clear that Abby is missed even while Emma is still angry with her.

Just why Emma is so angry at Abby is not clear until the last half of the story. Her reasons for ending the friendship are revealed in dribs and drabs that interrupt the regular narrative: "Freak. The word slithered into my mind, breaking the spell." Through these fragments readers can piece the girls' back-story together before Emma reveals the finer details.

Weatherly maintains a level of suspense throughout the story as Emma and Abby's friends try to learn what happened to her. Emma's cryptic references to "Balden" and "Karen Stipp" also draw readers further into Emma and Abby's past. At the same time, the plot remains necessarily one-sided as Abby never gets the chance to tell her experiences.

I really like the message of this story. How, interestingly, it is only after Abby goes missing that Emma is able to realize how precious Abby was as a friend and subsequently find herself again. The writing only falters at the end, where Weatherly seems desperate to neatly tie up the loose ends of a story that was never clear-cut or neat.

Mysterious, Thriller, Comedy, Love all put into one great package!
This book is amazing! The book simply blows me away with the thriling cliff hangers, the beautiful love story between two characters, the mystery behind Abby's dissapearance, and the comedy behind the embarrassing mistakes Emma makes. This book made me feel sorry for Emma but also despise her at the same time. This incredible book made me realize to treasure the most important things in life because you do not know what you have until it is gone. Gaia's in Europe. Sam is being accused of a crime he didn't commit. And things between Ed and Heather are starting to get rocky...

Plot developement... even more! I am pleased with the way this series is turning out... beginning to wonder where everything will get solved though, because I'm not sure I want to read all thirty-something books...

One of the Best Books in the 'Fearless' Series
Gaia Moore has finally made the life-changing decision to leave New York, and board a plane to Germany with her Uncle Oliver. However, while onboard, she finds that she is actually on a plane headed to Paris with her biological Father, the one she thinks murdered her beloved Mother, Katia, in cold-blood. We also see Ed ecstatic about his newfound progress in walking, and a new, even more conniving Heather than ever before. And Sam. Well, Sam is Sam. He's a great guy, but in MISSING we see him meet up with a new someone who may or may not be too good for him, and we also see a different side to him. One that's more angry, and for a good reason: he's being accused of murdering his friend. Overall, this was a wonderful book, that can easily be labeled as one of the best installments in the FEARLESS series. A must-have for anyone who has adored reading about Gaia's previous adventures.

Missing (Fearless, No 14)
I picked up Fearless books in bookstores for a while before I finally bought one and I am now hooked. This girl is so much like me it is scary the way I think and the way I physically look, the books decribe me perfectly. I even had a friend read her decription and he agreed. Has a great message
"Marita Missing in Mexico" is the story the author felt inspired to share with the world, taken from her journals written at the time of her ordeal in 1976. The author tells her story without bashing the country of Mexico and its citizens, which was very classy. The author has a great love and respect for that part of the world. The story was found to be interesting, and it's message valuable in more areas than just that of child custody battles.One can be uplifted and have his or her faith in God strengthened to overcome any of life's challenges.I for one was glad I came across this book. It has a great message.

awsome book
Wow! this is a totally amazing book! It really lets you enter the mind of a deaf person and see what it's really like. The fact that Sara is a teenager just makes it all the better! I strongly recomend this book to anyone who is interested in issues concerning people who happen to be deaf, and to anyone who is looking for action, adventure, with a bit of romance.

Interesting...
Emily is plagued with some sort of cold, fever, or bizarre aches and pains for much of her life. After a tons of tests, she is eventually diagnosed with the rare and incurable West Nile virus. Emily watches her senior year and her future go up in smoke.
I could relate to Emily's story. I have been sick for almost three years and didn't get answers for a long time. Emily was a great writer and I enjoyed her story. I think that anyone that has had a serious illness could relate to this. You should check it out either way.

Readers will enjoy hearing about the brighter side of the tunnel
HCI's Louder Than Words series features stories about serious issues from real teens who have experienced them.

Emily Smucker was looking forward to her senior year in high school before being diagnosed with the rare and incurable West Nile virus. After that she never feels good, but still manages to move toward a positive future. Emily is a Mennonite, which adds an interesting layer of faith questions and an unusual setting for her story. Taken from Emily's blog during her long period of illness, her account will draw readers in to her plight as well as her strong spirit.

Senior year was supposed to be awesome. Emily was going to produce a play, film lots of movies, take some courses at the community college, maybe get a job, and enjoy her new driver's license. A flu seems to be plaguing her, but then she has always caught lots of bugs. Her father is a teacher at the Mennonite school, which only has 32 students, so any absence is a big deal. Emily keeps going to school whenever she feels even a little ok.

Soon the days when she feels even a little ok are rare. Her mother takes her for a battery of blood tests that sometimes get lost or are inconclusive. One doctor finally thinks she has the West Nile virus. Each time she starts feeling even a little better, she lapses back into periods of hazy illness when she can't even think straight to do homework. Instead of looking forward to a year of achievement and fun, she is now worried about graduation. She is left out of the school Christmas play, then the family spring trip, and finds it harder to keep her spirits up. A trip to a sister in North Carolina helps a bit, but the illness comes back strong at times. Using a cane becomes a must.

Emily's writing shows a sense of humor, a love of her family, and a strong faith that help her through an impossible year. In the middle of being stuck in her bed for a long time, she will post funny blog entries about her room or her friends like a normal, healthy teen, turning this very serious story into an engaging read. The West Nile virus does eventually lessen its grip on victims who live through it, and Emily is able to begin piecing together a future, even if her senior year did not go according to her excited plans. Readers of EMILY will enjoy hearing about the brighter side of the tunnel.

An intriguing read
Emily Smucker writes honestly about the emotional and physical struggles of being sick for a long, long time. If you are sick, I am sure you will be able to relate to this jewel of a book. And even if you are not sick, then you will find this book intriguing, for she writes in a style entirely her own. Refreshingly random!! I enjoyed it and heartily recommend it! I absolutely loved her quirky style of humor. You will find yourself cracking up at her way of describing life, as well as being able to understand better how people with chronic illness feel at times and learn how to sympathize in meaningful ways.
I am not a book worm, and this is the very first real story book that I have managed to actually read all the way through in the entire year. that says a lot! Cheers, Emily, you did an awesome job!!

Drawn in to a real story
I worried a little before reading this, when I heard Emily had compiled blog posts and journal entries, along with new material, for her book. Some blogs can bog down in tedium at times. I joyfully discovered, though, Emily's talent for lively story-telling as she makes her way through happy moments and disappointments. Her book's pages truly become a narrative, with Emily as a character I came away feeling a connection with. She narrates against the backdrop of her home's setting and her family's loyal compassion for her throughout the months of her illness.

I recommend getting to know this story of Emily, and I'm glad she could share it with truth, humor, and refreshing quirkiness.

Not just for teens
I am a 50 something woman, and I found that age is no barrier to enjoying Emily's book.She has a wonderfully fresh voice.Her innate sense of humor made me laugh out loud. Her book feels so honest, sometimes painfully so.Anyone of any age who has suffered with a long term disease or disability will relate to Emily's journey.If you are a teen, or can remember being one, you may find a kindred spirit in Emily.I hope that this will be but the first of many books by this author. ... Another horrible book...
This book is very different from the other Fear Street novels I've read. The main story is Mark and Cara's parents disappearing and they try to find them. I didn't feel any suspense when I was reading the book. It was just plain...and boring. As I went deeper into the story, I grew more bored. The murder plot was so unrealistic.

HATE IT!
This book was extremely boring, some of the other reviews say " THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING!!"it was'nt. It was boring and confusing, the 1 of the only fear street books i didnt like (the other was the cheater.)

A dull story
I didn't like this story because it was kind of misleading.And it's not because Data's a cadet. The story didn't have data's personality that much. . The story was just a bit boring but it did have the planet where data was discovered. Over all it was an okay book.

Cool anthology manga!
You don't usually see many actual manga anthology graphic novels. This is a collection of short fantasy stories from Park Young Ha, the creator of the manhwa Bambi. They are all shojo-oriented and take place at different parts of an alternate reality.

The first story is the title chapter where a young man who finds out he's being forced to marry a pretty young demon girl. Neither of them wants to marry the other, so their fathers agree to cancel the wedding if they can find the young man's family heirloom, a seal of a white dragon. Unbeknownst to them, he actually gave it to the demon girl as a present when they met as kids.

The next one appeals to anthropomorphics a little more. In it, animal spirits live with the humans in a single world, and one bright young girl acts as a struggling healer. She saves the life of a wolf spirit who takes on human form to help her realize her true feelings.

Following that is the only story in the book that takes place in modern day. A male student accidently reads an encantation from his girlfriend's spellbook. Now, she has dog ears and a tail. They go to see a local wizard who tells them the only way to break the spell is if the boy confesses his love for her.

Next, an adventurous girl goes to sell her father's divine sword. However, she encounters a handsome dragon in human form who claims to be the original owner of the sword. Together, they help out a fox spirit free his wife who is trapped, while at the same time fall in love with each other.

Finally, a failing summonner tries to woo the heart of a princess with his fairy slave girl. He ends up landing in prision because of his attempt to scam everyone, but his fairy helps him out.

All in all, this was a nice little anthology. It's refreshing to see a manhwa or manga done in this fashion. Nice fairy tale-like storylines, with fresh shojo artwork. Furries should love it as well as readers of girls manga. ... Read more

Where to start...
This was a decent read and certainly got me thinking. However, this plot line was so original and captivating to me that I found myself dissapointed Ms. McBride didn't do more with it! The world she created was so unique, I wanted to see more from it. There were a lot of possibilities and the end result fell just a tad shy of where I wanted it to go. Overall I have to give this book a 3 based on originality but I really wish Ms. McBride had gone further and fleshed the story out more. It certainly had plenty of room to grow. ... Read more
