om poverty and prostitution to acclaim and self-respect as a professor and a playwright. Now, in a memoir that is by turns funny and angry, this remarkable African-American woman candidly recounts the story of her fascinating life. of photos.Amazon.com Review
Born in Greenwood, Mississippi, the heart of the MississippiDelta, Endesha Ida Mae Holland came of age as the civil rightsmovement was changing the lives of black Mississippians. Dirt poor, she dropped out of high school and became a prostitute when she wasbarely into her teens. By the time she was 18 years old, Holland hadserved two terms in the county workhouse for theft and for assault. Achance encounter led her to become involved with the StudentNonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and she became an activistand organizer, taking a new path that eventually led her to theUniversity of Minnesota, where she earned a doctorate and became acollege professor. From the Mississippi Delta is a gritty, inspiring memoir. ... Read more

Great!Book was received in perfect condition and in a timely manner. Thanks you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ida Mae Holland
Harrowing, at times bleak, but a superbly written memoir of a very special lady and the historical times she helped create.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reflections
Endesha's story, rich in its southern dialect is a remarkable story of triumph, and a testimony that affirms regardless of our past, our pain, our short-comings that within each of us is a tiny seed waiting to blossom. Her ability to surmount the many obstacles growing up in the MississippiDelta (a black girl) in the 60's serves as a beacon of light for AfricanAmericans who are today experiencing the pitfalls of poverty and injustice. Endesha has shown us how a committed spirit can burst forward to claim allthat the Almighty has in store for us.Dr. Lady, thank you for pioneeringthe way. Keep writing!

5-0 out of 5 stars The redefinition of inspiration
'Inspirational' has become one of those watered-down adjectives like 'brilliant'.Though we know certain words might signal something monumental, perhaps our frequent usage of them has lost some of the grandeur in their meaning. We no longer arch our backs or allow a goosebump to rise.Behold, along comes a work like From the Mississippi Delta:A Memoir.Dr. Endesha Ida Mae Holland turns the term, 'inspirational' onits ear. What is most remarkable about 'Delta'?Is it the phenomenalstory itself or is it Holland's gift for unrelenting and wittystory-telling?Holland never abandons humor even at the crux of tragedy. Her pen is as brazen as it is impeccably descriptive. She writes with animmediacy to jar the reader's sense of time so that we relive her mostdefining moments with bated breath. From Emmett Till's death to Dr. MartinLuther King's visit, Holland's simplest daily encounters mark turningpoints in American history.

Notably, 'Delta' celebrates the tenaciousspirit of a true woman-child.Holland narrates from a clever perspectivethat never quite chooses between the wise narrator looking back and therambunctious girl reaching forward. This devise is poignant.Arguably, young girls (in particular, young, black girls) are some of society's mostdisenfranchised members. When Holland employs that voice, the reader ishumbled. One is reminded of Anne Frank's influence. When the worstaspects of humanity are articulated through the voice of a little girl, wesee ourselves so clearly--vulnerable, restless, but especially hopeful. Thank you, Doc.Your struggle is instructional.Your literary prowess isan inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MAGNIFICENT READ!
Aside from being a celebration of the human spirit, Ms. Holland's Memoir offers a fresh, interesting, and unique glimpse into the early days of the Civil Rights Movement. This focus alone, I believe, renders the bookmeritorious.

Ms. Holland tells the civil rights story from theperspective of individuals born and raised in the muck and mire ofMississippi's lethal brand of white supremacy and racial hatred. Throughher eyes, we get a close-up view of what had to be overcome; and, what wasrequired of ordinary folk brave enough to get involved in a situation thatcould and DID, literally, cost them their lives and the lives of theirloved ones.

These unsung heroes deserve national attention andrecognition if the story of the Civil Rights Movement in the United Statesof America is to be told in its entirety. But, if this isn't reason enoughto add Ms. Holland's book to your 'must read' list, I believe the author'ssuperior craftsmanship will certainly convince you her work is worthy ofthe acclaim she is sure to receive once her book gains a wider readership. And, above all, the Memoir is a magnificent read!

Usually, I find itawkward and sometimes unnerving to read books written in a black, southern, vernacular. However, as in the case of Zora Neale Hurston, Endesha Ida MaeHolland writes with such a pure and authentic voice, I found myself fallingeffortlessly into her rhythm.

I'm a voracious reader and the authors Imost enjoy are great storytellers. My current favorite is BarbaraKingsolver, and my all time favorite is Zora Neale Hurston. Endesha Ida MaeHolland 'puts me in the mind of' both these writers.

She also reminds meof Frank McCourt (Angela's Ashes & 'Tis). Like McCourt, Ms. Hollandtransports you back to her childhood and growing up years with suchseamless ease, you find yourself sharing her heartbeat through every singleexperience she lives to tell about. Almost immediately, I found myselfcaring deeply about her; I grew to love her mother, her child, herneighbors, her friends; and, I found no strangers among those who populateher world.

What an exquisite gift of storytelling she has! I certainlyhope she plans to write more 'from the Mississippi Delta,' because hertalent is as rich and fertile as her source.

Obviously, I've become adevoted fan of Ms. Holland and her work ~ a designation I'm hoping you andI will soon share. Who knows, your reading experience with Ms. Holland mayinspire you to join me in asking Oprah Winfrey to feature the author andher book on the Oprah Show, as well as making 'From The Mississippi Delta,'an Oprah Book Club selection.

I was moved to make this appeal to Ms.Winfrey because I believe we all benefit from an increased national andinternational exposure to brave and talented women like Ms.Holland. Thesewomen are profoundly inspirational and deserving of our applause andrecognition. ... Read more

This book was written for teenagers, I think and has won at least one important award (Coretta Scott King, I think). But it's a very good introduction to an intricate political situation, actually a long historyof oppression.Well researched and dispassionately written, these factsthat show part of the injustices at every level during the Civil RightsMovement. It is everyone's history, but it's part of a large body ofnearly erased history.Called a challenge because there is not a clearwin, is demonstrates many of the shameful aspects of our democratic system. Particularly pertinent at a time of cries for campaign reform.Kudos tothe author, Mildred Pitts Walter! ... Read more

My copy of "The Storm" came today, and it's stunning.Everyone in my office stood around in the hallway as we looked through the kids' memories and drawings, utterly absorbed. At least five people immediately said they were going to order copies -- both for themselves, and for their schools.

The book has an almost visceral impact; the hurricane could have been yesterday, so strong are the emotional responses to reading it.We just wanted to gather all the kids in our arms, and somehow make the world right again. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
In 1961, a black veteran named James Meredith applied for admission to the University of Mississippi — and launched a legal revolt against white supremacy in the most segregated state in America. Meredith’s challenge ultimately triggered what Time magazine called “the gravest conflict between federal and state authority since the Civil War,” a crisis that on September 30, 1962, exploded into a chaotic battle between thousands of white civilians and a small corps of federal marshals. To crush the insurrection, President John F. Kennedy ordered a lightning invasion of Mississippi by over 20,000 U.S. combat infantry, paratroopers, military police, and National Guard troops.

Based on years of intensive research, including over 500 interviews, JFK’s White House tapes, and 9,000 pages of FBI files, An American Insurrection is a minute-by-minute account of the crisis. William Doyle offers intimate portraits of the key players, from James Meredith to the segregationist Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett, to President John F. Kennedy and the federal marshals and soldiers who risked their lives to uphold the Constitution. The defeat of the segregationist uprising in Oxford was a turning point in the civil rights struggle, and An American Insurrection brings this largely forgotten event to life in all its drama, stunning detail, and historical importance. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I gave this book to my Dad who attended Ole Miss at the same time Meredith was there. He felt the book was an accurate depiction of the events and has throughly enjoyed reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Race and politics at Ole Miss.
This is a great book. The story takes place in 1962 when a black veteran James Meredith tries to enroll in University of Mississippi.Since Ole Miss is a white school, he is refused. After court injunctions, the Mississippi state government and Governor Ross Barnett flatly refuse to enroll Meredith. The Federal Government through similar attempts also tries to enroll Meredith. Finally two weeks into the fall semester, Federal Marshalls and government troops are called into action to enroll Meredith.White students and right wing radicals from surrounding states decide to confront Meredith and the registration process and a riot/battle ensures. The battle is the climax of the book.It is amazing this happened in my lifetime.I am surprised how narrow minded these people were in intregating the University of Mississippi.
I commend Doyle on a great book.He tells the story with suspense so it becomes a page turner. This is not a short book, but the reading flows well and it becomes an easy read because of how the author approaches the subject. This book also is well researched and is ground breaking telling the reader of a little known conflict that most people now would like forgotten.
Great story.

5-0 out of 5 stars TRUE STORY THAT READS LIKE A NOVEL
William Doyle brilliantly recreates a little remembered incident that challenged America to its core: the attempt of an Air Force veteran named James Meredith to exercise his right to go to school. That would, on the surface, seem an easy task. However the year was 1962, the school was the University Of Mississippi, and the citizen was African American. The battle which took place left an armed force occupying an American campus, two people dead, and a nation facing the inevitable moral conflict brought about by segregation.

Doyle's research is superb; he uncovers evidence, testimony, and events which have never before been reported. At the same time, the writing is crisp, exciting and momentous - events race along spinning out of the control of the racist Governor (Ross Barnett), the vacillating President (John Kennedy) and the cool observer (Meredith himself)

Readers wanting to know more about the Civil Rights Movement, human courage, and the Kennedy Administration will, naturally, find this book to be fascinating. However, any citizen who wants an exciting read about the history of their nation should buy this remarkable book. ... Read more

Product Description

I am the river,
Deep and strong.
I sing an old, enduring song.

Thousands of years ago, tiny streams of melting glacial water converged to form a great river, the Mississippi. In time, masses of people flocked to its shores: Native tribes fished its waters and paddled their canoes across its flowing byways. European settlers pushed flatboats southward in search of fertile land to clear for farms and towns. Cities sprang up along its shores. Today, towboats push and pull, and ships' propellers hum, singing a song of commerce.

With rolling cadences and stunning illustrations, Diane Siebert and Greg Harlin paint a portrait of a mighty river that is the lifeblood of a nation, flowing deep, strong, and free.

Product Description
THIS EDITION IS INTENDED FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY.Amazon.com Review
Mark Twain's classic novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, tells the story of a teenaged misfit who finds himself floating on a raft down the Mississippi River with an escaping slave, Jim. In the course of their perilous journey, Huck and Jim meet adventure, danger, and a cast of characters who are sometimes menacing and often hilarious.

Though some of the situations in Huckleberry Finn are funny in themselves (the cockeyed Shakespeare production in Chapter 21 leaps instantly to mind), this book's humor is found mostly in Huck's unique worldview and his way of expressing himself. Describing his brief sojourn with the Widow Douglas after she adopts him, Huck says: "After supper she got out her book and learned me about Moses and the Bulrushers, and I was in a sweat to find out all about him; but by and by she let it out that Moses had been dead a considerable long time; so then I didn't care no more about him, because I don't take no stock in dead people."Underlying Twain's good humor is a dark subcurrent of Antebellum cruelty and injustice that makes The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn a frequently funny book with a serious message. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Collector's Library Huck Finn
Look Inside for Collector's Library Adventures of Huckleberry Finn promised an illustrated book. We have a case of a misleading Look Inside: in reality no illustrations; very small format; awful choice of typeface. My impression that Look Inside was made from a different edition.
Another thing: it's a little strange when Amazon customers review Mark Twain. Mark Twain does not need it. What is needed are reviews of different editions (quality, illustrations, scholarly or nor, paper, cover and typeface. So one star is, of course not for Huck Finn (100 stars for that boy), but for the awful edition. and misleading Look Inside.
Finally, let me repeat it again: the more I read reviews on Huck Finn, the more I am convinced, they have to be separated by editions. If I am looking for a scholarly edition with illustration and a decent cover and typeface, how, in a world, can it be helpful, if someone writes: "Mark Twain is not for me." Serious readers will seek opinions on classics from other sources, for example, from Hemingway who said, that the whole American literature had come out of Huck Finn. OK, if Amazon thinks that "Mark Twain is not for me" phrase is protected by First Amendment, and any football and beer lover has a right to put it here as an opinion, I agree. In this case, still, I think these ones have to be separated from opinions of serious book readers and collectors who are interested in differences of certain editions of classics.

I have not read all of it yet, because the man I am tutoring in reading has the book...

1-0 out of 5 stars BADLY published edition of a GREAT NOVEL
We all know "Huckleberry Finn" is a 5-star novel. My complaint is about this particular edition of the book. The type is horizontally compressed to the extreme and the layout on the some of the pages was canted. Mark Twain and his readers deserve better treatment!

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I really wanted to love this book but it was just o.k.Mark Twain is such a talented writer but this book just wasn't for me.
