This book has been very helpful. I have learned a lot for it. And will look to it often for help..

3-0 out of 5 stars Assistance needed for Genealogy Program
I have been researching my family for quite a few years now.I have used several versions of Family Tree Maker, what used to be a great program for storing and processing the data collected.

I purchased Family Tree Maker for Dummies in the hope that I would receive some tips on improving my techniques and systems.The ad said that "It works for all versions."I am not satisfied that it does.I have achieved no information that I didn't already have.In addition, the new versions of FTM are very different and, where a book of this type could be very beneficial, they aren't included.

As the name implies this is a great book for beginners using Family Tree Maker.It has everything you need to get started.

4-0 out of 5 stars Family TreeMaker for Dummies
Got this book to help with my FTW entries.Have done a lot, but in the first few chapters, I find that there is lots more to do, like to add facts about things, like what is the source of a graduation from high school, or what is the source of the degrees.
This is NOT a book to read from cover to cover.Start working with FTW, then when you get some data entered, read the chapter on what you've done, and you can go back and "touch it up" a bit for more interest for your family.
Well written, and easy reading, like most of the other "Dummies" books.

Big Belly? High Body Mass Index? High Blood Pressure?

If this sounds like you, you may be one of the millions of North Americans with Metabolic Syndrome. Predicted by medical experts as the likely number one risk factor for heart disease-Metabolic Syndrome, or MSX, describes a constellation of conditions, including those mentioned above, of which the body' resistance to insulin is a primary feature. A byproduct of obesity, 25 percent of the adult U.S. population is now estimated to have MSX.

The Metabolic Syndrome Program offers readers a sensible lifestyle-based approach to treating MSX. One of the first books to name and address this condition, The Metabolic Syndrome Program outlines a realistic plan of treatment-without magic pills or quick-fixes to a growing and little-known threat to public health.

The Metabolic Syndrome Program includes:

  • Facts about MSX, the risk factors associated with it and its impact on your overall health
  • The role of nutrition in combating MSX
  • The truth about fats, carbs and proteins and the balance needed to maintain optimal health
  • All the latest research on insulin resistance, Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension and Cardiovascular disease-the worst outcomes of metabolic syndrome
  • Detailed information on natural supplements that can be used to combat the risk factors of MSX
  • Recipes and meal plans that will help you make the immediate lifestyle changes required if you are one of the millions at risk for MSX

"Karlene Karst has done an excellent job outlining the seriousness of obesity and insulin resistance, and their ensuing complications,while providing a nutrition and lifestyle action plan to help you get back to the basics of good health."
--Sam Graci, author of the Path to Phenomenal Health and The Food Connection

3-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized and not entirely truthful
The first couple of chapters were great. I thought I may have found a great source of information at that point. But, things started to fall apart quickly. It was as if the author had collected a bunch of essays written over the years and jammed them together. This meant a lot of information was repeated, but presented as if for the first time. By the book's end, I was terribly frustrated every time I had to read yet another paragraph reiterating what insulin resistance was, and what risks it presented.

Worse than the repetition, I detected the occasional contradiction from section to section. On more than one occasion I found myself wondering, "just what does this author believe about xxx".

I pressed on from the first few chapters, trying to ignore the repetition and inconsistencies, looking for more good info, but didn't find much. The section on supplements is misleading. The author picks out a few studies to show how the supplements she discusses supposedly do great things. The problem is the author doesn't note that there are other, contradictory studies, and that in truth, the jury is still out on most on them (fish oil, excepted).

This kind of book really bugs the crap out of me. My impression is that it does more to earn the author a few bucks than it does to help those of us who really need it. It could have been a great book, had the entire book been as well written as the first few chapters, and had it been clear about the questionable supplement research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the only book you need'll on the disorder
I had a scare which led me to some 20 odd books on cholesterol, eventually leading to my becoming a complete vegan.I quickly dropped 20 pounds on an already skinny frame, got my numbers down to commendable levels--LDH, HDL, even BP--but not my triglycerides, and I was feeling no healthier as a vegan than as a carnivore.Next stop: Syndrome X.

It seems that if we don't have enough diseases, American commerce and capitalism must invent them, or give new names to old diseasees.Several decades ago everybody seemed convinced they had either hyper- or hypoglycemia.And I've noticed that those faddish health scares bear some remarkable resemblances to the latest one, Syndrome X aka Metabolic Syndrome aka Insulin Resistance disorder.

I don't have excess weight or, at this moment, high blood pressure, so why my sudden interest in Syndrome X (starting with its "founder," Dr. Reaven?).Well, let's face it, we as Americans have an obsessive interest about diagnosing diseases, whether our own or someone else's.Night after night I'm in a room with a TV set tuned to the gimpy guy who, as an antiheroic type because of a vicodin addiction, is as reliable as Perry Mason in diagnosing the afflicted accurately. Then there's that proactive woman autopsy/ forensics expert, who keeps us in suspense as she reconstructs the circumstances that led the deceased to be in his unfortunate condition--and never once do I recall either of the two throwing up their hands and saying, "Frankly, I have no idea what is (or what was) wrong with you (or him, in the case of the deceased).All the same, this nightly drama, reaching tidy closure in each instance, is enough to encourage any American with the least affliction to seek the same felicitous result for him or herself.

This is my 7th or 8th book on the "latest" widespread disorder (the author calls it the biggest cause of heart failure after smoking--and I don't smoke, which puts me uncomfortably close to the front of the line).I think the proponents of Metabolic Syndrome (we'll settle for that name to be consistent with this book's title) are most likely on to something.Even if your numbers are in line, who wants to be dependent on Plavix, Crestor, Cardia and all of the other cholesterol and heart meds for the rest of their life?Especially if the side-effects are severe enough to make you feel worse than you did as someone at high risk for heart disease?Also, if you've ever noticed a pronounced slump upon eating virtually anything sweet--enough to make you feel like an extra in a George Romero movie--wouldn't you like to find out what's causing it and what you can do to avoid it (aside from fasting)?The all-clear ratings from the standard work-ups for diabetes may provide some momentary reassurance, but that's all forgotten when you feel like h-- the next day.

Even if you haven't read any of the preceding books about the syndrome, not to worry.This one is among the most current and readable.In fact, it's the only one you need.Just one warning: it's easier to become a vegan than to follow--religiously and meticulously--the therapeutic regimen for Metabolic Syndrome.But if you don't make yourself numero uno in your life, I wouldn't count on your GP or, for that matter, Pfizer or Merck to do it for you.Moreover, only by healing yourself can you be of much good to anyone else.

5-0 out of 5 stars eyeopening
After many year of not feeling good I finally found a Dr who understood and had answers. He told me to buy this book and it really explained what he had told me at my exam.This book goes into detail and helps to understand what is going on in your body and puts you in the frontseat for your health care. I learned things that my Family Dr. had never told me and is still scratching her head over some of the things he has recommended or tried.If you aren't getting the answers you need read this book and try seeing a Dr specializing in Physical Medicine.It's one of those that "your Dr isn't telling you or doesn't know" kind of books.The Metabolism Miracle: 3 Easy Steps to Regain Control of Your Weight... 5-0 out of 5 stars Refer to this book over and over
I have read this book cover to cover twice and refer back to it often. The author is well informed on her subject. I saw her speak in person last September and decided to re read the book. I have lost 13 pounds to date and most of it from my abdomen. I look and feel better than I have in years. Really it's about cutting out the junk and getting back to the basics.

A Fresh and Effective Approach to Staying Toned During Pregnancy—in just 30 Quick Minutes a Day At Home or on the Road

Pregnancy is no time to let yourself go—and with Anna Aberg’s surprisingly efficient light weight program, the forty weeks of waiting may even be a time to get stronger and fitter!  When Aberg—a former Miss Sweden and personal trainer—was pregnant with her first child, she couldn't find an exercise routine that would increase her fitness while safeguarding her pregnancy.  Stretching, yoga, and light aerobics—standard fare for pregnant women—weren't enough for this high-performance mom-to-be.  Aberg developed a daily regimen of 2- to 10-pound weight training that could be done anywhere at any time.  The system she developed and perfected to keep herself in shape is all here, divided into three sets for each trimester of pregnancy.  It focuses on abs, arms, thighs, butts, and shoulders and promises: increased strength, enhanced endurance, a cap on body fat and more flexibility.

Aberg’s 30-Minute Pregnancy Workout Book will tone any mother and keep truly active exercisers in peak condition throughout their pregnancies.

4-0 out of 5 stars okay book
the book had a lot of suggestions and workouts, but i think i would have been better off going with a video

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book.
I found this at the library and gave it a try. I was very active prior to being pregnant: kickboxing, grappling, stickfighting and I also lifted weight. Because a lot of the sports I did required a lot of close contact, I had to make quite a few adjustments to my workout routine. I am now in my 15th week and I also do get tired more easily.
This book is great. I only started with the second trimester routine. I love that it truly feels like a cardio workout. Photos are great although if you've never lifted weight before, it is true they might not be as clear since they only show you 2 photos (move is not broken down a lot). So far I have not been able to do the routine in 30 minutes. It takes me about 45 minutes. I think it has to do with the fact that I have not memorized the whole routine yet and so it takes me more time to look through the pages and I might be doing the moves a bit slower.

The main CON I have about the book is that I could have done without the extra advice/pages about pregnancy in general and the development of the baby. Most pregnant women read at least a dozen of books on the subject and so this one could have kept the focus on the fitness and nutrition and skipped the rest. This was the first book on the subject of fitness and pregnancy that I read so I cannot compare it to the other ones available.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd had this the first time
Let me start by saying that I found this week just as I entered my third trimester of my second pregnancy, so I only applied the third trimester and post-partum moves.I did, however, look over the whole book and I think I can speak for the book as a whole when I say the following:

Pros:
1.The moves are easy to do, and yet I found them to be very effective (3rd trimester is exclusively upper-body moves, and they were really just right; and I think made a huge difference when my baby was born; I'm still doing those moves, aimed esp. at helping your posture while nursing, and your upper body while carrying that baby around!).
2.The moves focus on aerobic muscle toning, which I really like (using light weight with lots of reps rather than heavier weights to build bulkier muscles).
3.The exercises are described on each page, but there is a summary of the workout routine at the beginning of each trimester section, so you can use just one page if you remember the moves, or turn the pagebetween moves to have the description in front of you.[Some books only list exercises, then you have to look each of them up in another section if you don't remember.]

Cons:
1.The pictures are a little hard to follow--it took me a few read-throughs to figure out exactly how to do the moves (a few of them are very similar).I docked a star for this reason.
2.Just one set of exercises for the trimester.I like to have a couple sets to rotate through (set #1 on Mondays and Thursdays, set #2 on Tuesdays and Fridays or something like that), though perhaps because these are more aerobic rather than muscle building it's okay to be repeating the same patterns more frequently.

Overall, it's my favorite pregnancy workout book (and I tried half a dozen between the two pregnancies).Highly recommend--have bought for a number of friends now.

Product Description
It's sometimes called a hidden epidemic: One in ten Americans--more than twenty million people, most of them women--has a thyroid disorder. At any given time, millions of people have an undiagnosed thyroid disorder and experience a chronic mental anguish that almost certainly arises from the very same source. Yet many primary-care doctors still don't recognize the importance of the thyroid in mind-body health--and its especially crucial role in women's well-being.

The Thyroid Solution is a must-read for anyone who suffers from a thyroid condition. It's the first mind-body approach to identifying and curing thyroid imbalances. Written by a medical pioneer and leading authority in the field of thyroid research, this groundbreaking book offers Dr. Ridha Arem's practical program for maintaining thyroid health through diet, exercise, and stress control--and through his revolutionary medical plan, which combines two types of hormone treatments with astounding results. Inside you'll discover

- The thyroid basics--what it is, where it is, what it does
- How thyroid hormones affect the brain and alter mood, emotions, and behavior
leading to brain fog, weight gain, loss of libido, infertility, anxiety, and depression
- What tests to ask your doctor to give you--and what they mean
- The vital connection between stress and thyroid imbalance
- The benefits of antioxidants and essential fatty-acid foods and supplements
- How to recognize and cure the deep and lingering effects of a thyroid imbalance

Filled with remarkable patient histories and interviews that document the dramatic results of Dr. Arem's bold new treatments, The Thyroid Solution now gives you and your doctor the tools you need to live a life with peace of
mind . . . and body.Amazon.com Review
One in ten Americans suffers from thyroid dysfunction, yetmost don't realize the mental and emotional components of thiscondition. "This is the first book to explain the hidden sufferingthat many patients have difficulty expressing and the first book toprovide new ways of helping address and heal this suffering," promisesauthor Ridha Arem, M.D., associate professor of medicine at BaylorCollege of Medicine and chief of endocrinology and metabolism at BenTaub General Hospital, both in Houston, Texas. This book explains thelink between stress and thyroid imbalance; how thyroid imbalanceaffects your emotions, sex life, and relationships; and how to copewith the effects of this imbalance. Because thyroid problems primarilystrike women, a whole section deals with women's health issues, suchas infertility, miscarriage, postpartum depression, premenstrualsyndrome, and menopause. Another section provides practical tools,such as evaluating lab tests and self-diagnosis techniques, dealingwith treatment problems and side effects, and preventing memory lapsesand depression. The book covers lifestyle choices that affect thyroidhealth, such as diet, supplementation, and exercise. Frequent casestudies (usually told as first-person narratives), checklists, andquestionnaires help to simplify the material and make it easier tocheck the medical information against your own situation. Each chapterends with "valuable points to remember," making review easy. If yousuffer from thyroid imbalance, or think you might, this book could bea valuable resource. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Arem Advocate
I found Dr. Arem through a friend of mine here in Houston, Texas. I began seeing Dr. Arem approx 11/08. He is a gentle man with an amazing sense of quiet compassion and
high intellect. I have struggled with Hashimoto Thyroiditis and Epstein-Barr for some time now (years), but never knew that so many parts of the body could be affected in so many ways.
Over the course of my 51 yr life, I have wondered why I felt certain things. After reading his book THE THYROID SOLUTION, I was so relieved to learn why I might have been feeling
the depression, mood swings, pms issues, anxiety and I always tried to examine why I experienced these things for seemingly no reason.
I learned and am still learning just how intricate not only the thyroid is, but the body as a whole and how the thyroid works so closely with the brain's chemistries, which in turn, affect the entire body. I have always also been atuned to body/mind health and nutrition,but never realized the thyroid could have so much to do with everything I was feeling from fatigue to hormonal issues. Dr. Arem is an amazing author, doctor and advocate for all of us suffering with a miriad of disorders and I thank him with all of my heart for supporting women, especially, everywhere. I encourage you all to read his book and if you can, visit Dr. Arem as a patient.

Product Description
Commonly perceived as a flavor-of-the-month diagnosis, ADD is, infact, anenormous health problem that will only continue to grow.It affects six percent of the population,yet less than one third aretaking medication.Why?According to Dr. Amen, attention deficitdisorderis underdiagnosed, often incorrectly treated, and poorly understood.

Dr. Amen, board-certified in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatryandlicensed in nuclear brain imaging, has discovered that there are sixtypesof ADD- not just the commonly known two.Moreover, the mostfrequentlyprescribed treatment- Ritalin- makes four of these types worse.Dr. Amen'sdiscovery results from an intensive, years-long study of brain imagingthathas identified the distinctive brain dysfunctions characterizing eachtypeof ADD.

Dr. Amen's arresting brain images found throughout these pages leavenodoubt that ADD is a real, biological, and ultimately treatable disorder.These dramatic images help sufferers and theirfamiliesrealize this is a medical problem that can be helped with properintervention.

Until now the psychiatric community has not done enough for peoplewith ADD.The disorder does not disappear after adolescence, and it is much morecomplex than we have been led to believe.With Dr. Amen'srevolutionaryapproach, readers will learn the full scope of the disease and itsmanagement.Finally, in this book, he identifies six types of ADD:
* Type 1 - Classic ADD

* Type 2 - Inattentive ADD

* Type 3 - Overfocused ADD

* Type 4 - Temporal Lobe ADD

* Type 5 - Limbic ADD

* Type 6 - Ring of Fire ADD

Complete with recommendations for prescription drugs, nutraceuticaltherapy,cognitive reprogramming, parenting and educational strategies,biofeedback,self-hypnosis, and more, Healing ADD provides readers with acomprehensive treatment program that can lead to a normal, peacefulandfully functional life.This proven program greatly enhances brainfunctionfor each of the six types of ADD and presents the state-of-the-arttreatmentfor adults and children alike.

ADD sufferers often say, "The harder I try, the worse it gets".Dr. Amentells them, for the first time, how to get well.Amazon.com Review
Hard, visual data make a compelling case for the existence of attentiondeficit disorder (ADD) in this pioneering work by Daniel G. Amen, M.D.Using a nuclear medicine technique called "single photon emission computedtomography" (SPECT)--a controversial step, according to some of hispeers--Dr. Amen scans patients' brains to identify various abnormalities.From more than 8,000 such studies and more than 12,000 patient evaluations,Dr. Amen concludes that six--not the formerly presumed two--different typesof ADD exist. This book encompasses the full spectrum of Dr. Amen's work:from symptom identification to clinical evaluation, to diet and medicationrecommendations, to everyday strategies for living with ADD (whether thereader is a parent of an ADD child, or has been diagnosed with thedisease.)

No stranger to the skepticism surrounding this topic, Dr. Amen begins witha list of dead-on myths (including "ADD is overdiagnosed") and surprisingfacts ("Many people with ADD are never hyperactive"). From this intriguingbeginning flows a highly readable chapter on the signs and manifestationsof ADD in all ages. Dr. Amen's full description of SPECT imaging includesmultiple brain scan photos that nicely support his theories. But the mostsatisfying element of this well-researched presentation occurs in the finalhalf of the book; here, Amen thoroughly explores the biological (diet,exercise, medication), psychological (from personal coaching topsychotherapy), and social support (parenting and school strategies) neededto heal each type of ADD. This book will prove a valuable tool for parents,adult sufferers, and medical professionals seeking practical support formanaging this increasingly recognized condition. --Liane Thomas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing ADD: The Breakthrough Program That Allows You to See and Heal the 6 Types of ADD
Well-written, easy to read, useful information about the brain and ADD, the book provided information that helped me better understand a long undiagnosed malady. Gives examples of how ADD shows up in children, yet can be applied to adult behavior. Most helpful to me was the testing and break down of the six different types of ADD and the most helpful forms of treatment--medical and alternative methods--I discovered that ADD has several forms and is not a "one size fits all" type of disease. Recommended to me by my health-care practitioner.

I have been looking everywhere for a curriculum that is already done. I don't want to reinvent the wheel. This book is so nicely organized by month and has a theme of the month, with a 5 daily activities for each week in the month. It's great! Thank goodness I can finally stop book flipping to find what I need to come up with a theme of the week/month and there is enough to do! Yea.
