Found A Pearl In This Oyster Boat
Originally, I bought this book as extra documentation for the Skipjack model that I was already building from Soloman's Island Model Boat Club plans. But, I found a goldmine of details along with the "ratio formulas" that the original boats were built from. With this book and a basic understanding of carpentry and boatbuilding, you can build ANY SIZE Skipjack that you would like.

Very descriptive
It's not very often you get books on model railroading that do not go into country-side detail, or talk about how to build cement factories.Quite frankly, there are still a lot of railroads that run through modern cities, and those of us who work on layouts that represent a piece of urban environment don't always have a lot to go on in terms of existing ideas and products.This book certainly covers a great deal of details as they relate to urban railroad layout.Very useful book.I am taking a lot from it already.A+

A Great Resource
Building a layout reflecting an urban area is not an easy thing to do either in terms of planning or in terms of construction. It's difficult to get much into the available space. With the tips given in this book, you would be amazed at what you can pull off.

The book talks about cities both as backdrops and as the focus of a rail module. In both cases, the author's experience serves the reader well as do the photos and diagrams. Tips are present on construction and detailing. This is a top shelf resource for anyone who like railroading.

A Wealth of Modeling Information!
This book is a must for anyone modeling city scenes. John Pryke shows and tells how to model city scenery realistically. Great photos and suggestions.

Pryke nails creating convincing city scenery by incorporating dimensional modeling with this well-written book. He covers backdrops, flats, partial and fully modeled buildings in a way that makes complete sense thanks tosome excellent writing, fine photography and diagrams. Great step by step instructions!
I had to buy this book for a class.It is awesome for beginners!A couple of upperclassmen have been looking through it and think it is super helpful for them even though they have already been making models for a couple years.It is the most helpful art type textbook I have ever read.I have only had it a couple weeks, but I have learned proper cutting, gluing, and even how to perfectly curve mattboard and foam core without denting it.Instead of just talking about tools and stuff, this book actually explains the right way to use them, and what tools should be used for different materials. One of the best parts of the book is where it explains common mistakes model makers make, and how to avoid them.Lots of step by step instructions and pictures for every technique.some of the pictures are a little blurry though, it would be nice if they were clearer, but if you read the instructions and look at the pictures you will learn a ton! ... another good book on response surfaces
George Box and Norman Draper have written an outstanding text on model building and response surface methods. This is an excellent companion to Box's text with Stu Hunter and William Hunter on experimental designs "Statistics for Experimenters". Another excellent, more recent and detailed account of response surface methods can be found in the book by Montgomery and Myers.

An invaluable resource
This text give a top to bottom account of model building via RSM. If you have a question, consult this book.

Some great tips, but not for everyone.
This book covers everything from card and plastic structures, to wood and plaster craftsman kits and metal castings.It does not cover it evenly however.Only 14 of the 222 tips deal with plastic kits and kitbashing, while there's a full 3 pages on applying roofing shingles to craftsman kits!Although there are many useful tips - and a couple of gems, I would only reccomend this book toa modeler just starting on craftsman kits.That's really the books focus. If you're not building craftsman kits, or you've built several already, this book won't be very relevant.

Great book about modeling structures.
I own several how-to books on model railroading and this one in particular does a great job of explaining how to build and incorporate structures on layouts.It also has great diagrams and pictures to help the reader with projects they may want to try.I highly recommend this book to model railroaders that may want some new ideas or tips on how to improve current skills. ... This is the best book on the subject
Scratchbuilding is a lost art these days, but this book does a good job of explaining how it's done. The book assumes the reader knows little, and it tells enough that a first-timer can build a successful and satisfying project. Of course the photos in the book can spur a seasoned scratchbuilder to try to do better also. The book primarily deals with inexpensive materials and simple tools, making it ideal for the beginning or intermediate modeler. One of the projects involves making a caboose out of paperboard and wood. You'd never know from the pictures it was made of paper.

There are materials and tools available today that weren't available (or just not practical) when this book was written, but the information in this book is timeless. You can easily apply the same techniques to 2005 technology. And you'll still be able to do the same in 25 years.

Extremely Basic at best and pointless at worst
This just covers a basic level for excel knowledge.Excel can do so much more in modeling then this book shows.I can only wonder why they call it"Pro" Excel Financial Modeling."Beginner" is more appropriate.

Best layman's book I've come across for modeling startups
I've been searching for a book like this for quite a while.

I'm not a CPA.....I'm a software guy.More specially, I run a software development firm.In recent past, five of my clients have been raw start-ups, where they have enlisted my firm to help create their product.As their trust advisor, I get to peak at their financial models.In some cases, I have to help them create components of their models, especially as they forecast out their product development costs.

There aren't many resources for entrepreneurs to help them do a comprehensive financial model in excel.I've come across a few websites offering pre-built excel models.But they definitely lack the depth that is presented in this book.A couple of my clients have spent waaay too much money with CPAs to turn out lack-luster, hard to follow, models.I will start handing this out to my clients and save them money.

The only knock I have towards the book is that it is geared towards product-based ventures.I didn't see much support for services-based or subscription-based internet offerings.

This is a great book for any early stage entrepreneur that is preparing a "do-it-your-self" model to evaluate the business practicality of his or her idea.The book is very easy to read and walks the reader through a very straightforward and practical approach for preparing a simple first stage business model.The author does not get bogged down in technical accounting detail but rather presents the material in a very logical and understandable way for the non-accountant entrepreneur. As a CPA I often see entrepreneurs burn through a lot of money with professionals because they come to the professional prematurely with half baked ideas, having given no thought to the business model.Using this book and the approach laid out by the author, will help the entrepreneur focus his business thinking and allow him to evaluate the business viability of an idea before he goes to his professional. This practical business model approach will better prepare the entrepreneur to make the most efficient use of his CPA's time and his own money.

NOVICE EXCEL MODELERS ONLY!COMPLETE JOKE!
I was extremely disappointed with this book!This book can only be of any use for a total novice Excel modeler.No serious user of financial statements who performs complex modeling of any sort could possibly find this book to be of any use whatsoever.There is no treatment of complex capital structure, there is an utter absence of any robust scenario analysis or valuation.

Why in the world would someone provide this book with a title "Pro Excel Financial Modeling", when it does not address any of the real issues that professional modelers deal with on an everyday basis?The approach is so overly simplistic that the book reads like a complete joke!I will return this book for a complete refund!

Good info, lots of great photos
I'm hoping to get a house soon so that I can start building my first model railroad and I know that no matter what the space is like I'll be looking at constructing one with multi-decks.The author talks at length about designing the space for Operating Sessions, and for good reason.Even though I'm not in to doing all the time table stuff he is, some of the same issues apply - like making sure that there's enough room for people to work switches and such.Many of the photos show how good lighting makes a difference.And rather than just scratching the surface of many important topics, the author dives right in.It seems like most of the topics that should be covered in this book are.Which is something I can't say for a lot of MR books that I've read.Overall I'm very pleased with this book. ... Model Railroad Bridges and Trestles
Excellent resource for the model railroader. This book will inspire you to build. There is an enormous amount of information relating to actual bridge construction as well as techniques for the model builder. There are also many scaled drawings that are both clear and concise.

A Lot of Bridge Building Theory and Prototype Photos
This book appears to be a compendium of earlier articles from Model Railroader.It starts with "Understanding Bridge Construction" and discusses various types of bridges including trestle design, plate girder bridges, and a look at some prototype bridges with measurements.There are some chapters on actual model bridge construction ("kit-bashing" or "scratch building") but overall, the book leans heavily toward the concepts of bridges so the modeler can make and use the structures as the prototype railroads would.(You don't typically use a huge span to cross a drainage ditch for example.)I found the chapter on wooden trestle and their "bends" (p. 30) useful and the chapter on "Building Black Bear Bridge" (p. 106) fascinating.

I would say this book would be good for the middle level to the experienced modeler.I personally think the novice would be better served buying some of the excellent model bridges available.Even they might appreciate the basics covered in the early chapters.

Must have for all!
I know I have given high praise to "The Model Railroader's Guide to Bridges, Trestles & Tunnels", but in all honesty this is THE perfect resource for designing and building your OWN bridges. It gives great detail in almost every aspect of design and construction of bridges, it even gives explanations for what type of bridge would suit diffrent terrains and land masses. Buy this along with "The Model Railroader's Guide to Bridges, Trestles & Tunnels" and you will have THE COMPLETE resource for any and all types of bridge building.

A Wonderful Collection
Speaking as one who was formerly a civil engineer, this compendium is a wonderful collection of articles on building bridges for model railroads. It is not a book by a single author. Instead, it is a collection of reprints of articles from Model Railroader magazine. As such, some are better than others but all are good.

Particularly worthy of note is the first series of articles which is a survey of different types of bridges and their design. It is technically correct and conveys enough information to the modeler to do a creditable job but it is yet simple enough to understand for those without an engineering background.

Most of the later articles deal with the construction of particular bridges instead of general principles but they too are well written and adaptable to other situations. Since this work is intended for modelers and not engineers, much of the emphasis is on the aesthetics. This is as it should be as it is the information vital to the modeler.

All in all, this is a great collection.

Building Railraod Bridges? Then this book is for you!
This book is a collection of articles that have previously appeared in past issues of Model Railroader Magazine. While the articles are informative and insightful, the format that Kalmbach uses to copy the various original bridge and trestle articles and paste them into a book is not very slick. It would have been nice if they would have updated some of the information and added more color photographs. Books in this format appear to be another way for Kalmbach to re-hash old articles of a similar topic, put them under one cover and generate more sales from already published material. This book has become reference material for my library. I however would recommend the Kalmbach book "The Model Railroader's Guide To BRIDGES, TRESTLES & TUNNELS" by Jeff Wilson, this book is fresh, better organized, and a useful tool for modeling railroad bridges. ... Nifty, but one part missing from my kit
At the new low price, I think this is a terrific kit.Simple to assemble, nice quality, and seems relatively sturdy since I've reinforced it with a bit of clear tape hidden inside, to hold each card in its place.(Tape not included).

This is an accent lamp.Doesn't give off much light.I like it, though; sitting next to it, I feel 10,000 feet tall.

One small problem is that I did not get one of each necessary card.One card was missing, and instead I received a duplicate of another. ... Read more

Superblyillustrated and still the best book
As the other reviewers state, this is the book to get on free flight indoor model airplanes.The author illustrates / draws for a living; his well crafted and instructive drawings are better than photographs in showing you how to build such models.

I agree with the other reviewer that Novice or Limited Pennyplane is by far now a better class to build and fly for your first competition class model.

As others comment, some aspects are a bit dated but it is still the best book.I own two copies.

The best book on indoor aeromodeling!
Ron William's book Is an incredible resource for indoor flyers. Indoor models have seemed mysterious even to many outdoor flyers, but this book shows how to go from a simple Delta-Dart like glider to world class F1D planes weighing around 1 gram. Although the Aircraft types are a bit dated (Easy-Bee is now rather difficult, F1D planes are now much smaller and covered in plastic, Superthin plastics replaced many other coverings...)The building techniques are the same, and so are the formulas for loading and prop-form carving. Contest flyers should also get Lew Gitlow's newer book "indoor flying models" but William's Book is a truly indespencible resource.

A Classic Book!
This is a fantastic book. Although it's getting old, it's probably the best book ever written about building indoor duration models. It may also be the best book ever written about model aircraft.

The author obviouslyput an enormous amount of effort into it, and it will be very useful toanyone who wants to begin building these fragile and beautifulmodels.

The book is almost an inch thick, and contains detailedinstructions on almost every step involved in building indoor models. Ifyou've never built a completely successful rubber-power model plane before,this book might be a really good place to start. The first chapter startswith a beginner's model. Subsequent chapters cover more advanced topics, upto the world-championship F1D class.You could easily go from any skilllevel to being able to build any model in the book, using only theinstructions and plans given in the book.

Although the book concentrateson rubber duration, there is also a chapter on scale models and one onhand-launched gliders.There are many illustrations and they're excellent(I think the author is an architect).

The only thing wrong with this bookis that it is now getting old. For example, chapters two and three whichdescribe the easy-bee class, were obviously written at a time when theclass was was less competitive than it is today. Nevertheless, the buildingand flying information given in the book is pretty timeless. People whowant more up-to-date information should probably buy Lew Gitlow's morerecent book as well.

Useful, enjoyable, and still the best book on its subject.
Ron Williams' book is a pleasure that I've gone back to many times, both to enjoy his prose and his clear drawings and to answer questions and come up with ideas on my current project. A dog eared copy from the library was responsible for my entry into this hobby. Williams covers several types of indoor flying, with plans and instructions for a number of models, ranging from the easiest beginner's model to challenging F1D models with a couple of feet of wingspan that only weigh as much as a dollar bill. Both the prose and the artwork are clear and elegant; you might be tempted to copy some of the drawings to hang in your workshop.The book is showing its age slightly; it has no mention of Tan II, and the EZB designs aren't anywhere near as light as we have today, but it still serves as a wonderful introduction and reference. Williams also didn't seem to realize how easy Limited Pennyplane is, recommending instead EZB as the first serious model. Despite these small flaws, I recommend this book without hesitation, and I'm trying to get another copy to give to newcomers. This book should be republished! ... Read more
