Product Description
This introduction to the discipline of computer science presents the entire Modula-2 programming language at a beginning level. The authors stress the art of problem-solving on the students' part and they reveal Modula-2's ability to separate a concept from its implementation. This is one of the first books to present data abstraction in software engineering and top-down problem decomposition at an introductory level. Many program listings are contained along with the inclusion of examples and problems from many major areas of computer science. Chapter coverage includes problem solving and algorithms, simple programs and their structure, data types and control structures, subprograms, pointer variables and dynamic storage allocation, functional and data abstraction with Modula-2, recursion, scope and visibility within internal modules and problem solving using low-level programming in Modula-2. ... Product Description
An introduction to high-level computer programming in Modula-2, the aim of this book is to teach the language in such a way that the major constructs of the language are introduced as early as possible and are reinforced throughout the remainder of the book. Procedures and Modules are introduced at an early stage and are expanded upon as other constructs are introduced. Each chapter includes a set of technical exercises and answers to test the reader's understanding, and a set of programming exercises. The book's major theme is that intelligent use of Modules and Procedures makes program development easier and renders programs more readable. ... Read more

Product Description
Programming is a skill which requires knowledge of both the basic constructs of the computer language used and techniques employing these constructs. How these are used in any given application is determined intuitively, and this intuition is based on experience of programs already written. One aim of this book is to describe the techniques and give practical examples of the techniques in action - to provide some experience. Another aim of the book is to show how a program should be developed, in particular how a relatively large program should be tackled in a structured manner. These aims are accomplished essentially by describing the writing of one large program, a diagram generator package, in which a number of useful programming techniques are employed. Also, the book provides a useful program, with an in-built manual describing not only how the program works, but also how it does it, with full source code listings. This means that the user can, if required, modify the package to meet particular requirements. A floppy disk is available from the publishers containing the program, including listings of the source code. All the programs are written in Modula-2, using JPI's Top Speed Modula-2 system running on IBM-PCs and compatibles. This language was chosen as it is an ideal language for implementing large programs and it is the main language taught in the Cybernetics Department at the University of Reading. There are some aspects of the Top Speed implementation which are not standard, so suitable comments are given when these occur. Although implemented in Modula-2, many of the techniques described here are appropriate to other languages, like Pascal of C, for example. The book and programs are based on a second year undergraduate course taught at Reading to Cybernetics students, entitled Algorithms and Data Structures. Useful techniques are described for the reader to use, applications where they are appropriate are recommended, but detailed analyses of the techniques are not given. ... Read more

Excerpt: In computer science, Modula-3 is a programming language conceived as a successor to an upgraded version of Modula-2. While it has been influential in research circles (influencing the designs of languages such as Java, C#, and Python) it has not been adopted widely in industry. It was designed by Luca Cardelli, James Donahue, Lucille Glassman, Mick Jordan (before at the Olivetti Software Technology Laboratory), Bill Kalsow and Greg Nelson at the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) Systems Research Center (SRC) and the Olivetti Research Center (ORC) in the late 1980s. Its design was heavily influenced by work on the Modula-2+ language in use at SRC and at Acorn Computers (later Olivetti when it bought out Acorn) at the time, which was the language in which the operating system for the DEC Firefly multiprocessor VAX workstation was written and for which the Acorn Extended Modula-2 (Modula-2+) programming environment was developed at the Acorn Computers Research Center (ARC) as to write the ARX operating system as part of the project of ARM based technology for the Archimedes range of computers and later when Olivetti bought out Acorn Computers in 1985. As the revised Modula-3 Report states, the language was also influenced by other languages such as Mesa, Cedar, Object Pascal, Oberon and Euclid. Modula-3's main features are simplicity and safety while preserving the power of a systems-programming language. Modula-3 aimed to continue the Pascal tradition of type safety, while introducing new constructs for practical real-world programming. In particular Modula-3 added support for generic programming (similar to templates), multithreading, exception handling, garbage collection, object-oriented programming, partial revelation and explicit mark of...
