Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Moldova," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Moldova in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Moldova when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Moldova, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Since Romania entered the EU, the murky territorial questions on her northeastern border have started to receive more attention. What are Moldova, Bassarabia, and Transnistria; and how did they wind up suspended between Romania and Russia?
Since Romania entered the EU, the murky territorial questions on her northeastern border have started to receive more attention. What are Moldova, Bassarabia, and Transnistria; and how did they wind up suspended between Romania and Russia ?

With Wilson's famous 14 points, after the First World War, the nationality principle was first upheld as the basis for the creation of new states and for the recombining portions of existing states. How did the interpretation of the principle change in the ensuing years; how consistently was it applied; and in whose interests?

This book analyzes the problem of the Bessarabian Treaty, and offers a glimpse of Romanian foreign policy in the 1920's. Under the Treaty, the de facto unification of Bessarabia with Romania was officially recognized - a great success for Romania. Why, then, did that territory end up under Soviet control (in the " Republic of Moldavia ")?

Mitrasca has sifted through unpublished documents from the national archives of Japan, Romania, Great Britain, France and Italy, and presents excerpts to back up his analysis of diplomatic maneuvering between the World Wars. What could Romania's territorial refinements have mattered to Japan ? What was Italy's interest? And why was the United States the only Great power to steadfastly refuse to acknowledge Bassarabia's union with Romania ? Mitrasca pieces together the evidence, analyzing the overt and covert negotiations at the Paris Peace Conference and in embassies around the world, and traces the evolving situation that in the end produced a result quite different from what was apparently intended in 1920. ... Product Description
Today the self-proclaimed republic of Moldova, a former province of Romania, is at the center of Russia´s geopolitical strategies toward the Balkans. Nicholas Dima provides a concise historical background of Moldova from its years as a territory of the Soviet empire to the post-Soviet era when Russia refused to relinquish its grasp on the disputed region. The core of the book details the political upheaval of the 1980s, the independence of Moldova, and Russia´s subsequent maneuvering of the region back under Moscow´s control. Dima shows how Moscow is now attempting to regain its former geopolitical power by means of assistance to the self-proclaimed Transdnestr region of Moldova -the last Marxist stronghold in the former Soviet space -through which it could potentially gain a new foothold on the Balkans and surprise Europe and the world once again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Comments after initial orientation to the book
I read about this book in the August 2000 issue of National Georgraphic magazine, and grew very eager to read it. For years I've been searching for ways to explore family roots in Shepitikava, Ukraine, around and prior to1920. This book provides details I would not have found anywhere unless Idid the on site research the author Weiner has done. What a find! Auntsborn in Shepitivka prior to 1920 still live today and will be mesmerized bythe details I will soon point out to them. For that matter, their father,my grandfather, may well be pictured in one 1920 photo of Jewish men inShepetivka at the cemetary's new gate.

5-0 out of 5 stars At long lasta pathway to our family history in Ukraine
I recently received my copy of this long awaited work by Miriam Weiner. In addition to providing the first tangible inventory of what the regional archives hold, in regard to the history of our Jewish families, this bookgives a wonderful pictorial overview of the area. One which most of uscould only imagine until now.It does so by providing photos of the placesour families inhabited in the past, contrasted, in many instances, with howthose same places appear now.

The vivid past jumps off the pages ofthis beautifully formatted book, just as the lure of the book'svastarchive document inventory tempts the reader with its researchpossibilitiesfor the future.

This book is a must for anyonecontemplating research into their family history in Ukraine and Moldova, and a treasure for those who are merely curious about the world ourancestors lived in and left behind. ... Read more

Excerpt: The term Thraco-Roman refers to the culture and language of the Thracian and Dacian peoples who were incorporated into the Roman Empire and ultimately fell under the Roman and Latin sphere of influence. The term was coined in 1901 by Ovid Densusianu, who used it to describe the "oldest epoch of the creation of the Romanian language", when the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Balkans between the fourth and sixth century, having its own peculiarities, had evolved into what is known as Proto-Romanian. By extension, historians started to use the term to mean the time period of the history of the Romanian people until the 6th century, which witnessed the cultural and linguistic Romanisation of many Daco-Thracian tribes. The territory where this process took place, consensually agreed to be near the Jireek Line is characterized as having two main peculiarities: Page from the Notitia Dignitatum, a late Roman register of military commands, depicting shields of the magister militum praesentalis II. An analysis of East Roman army in 350-476 shows that the Danubian regions provided 54% of the total units. It is for this reason that Galerius "avowed himself the enemy of the Roman name and proposed that the empire should be called, not the Roman, but the Dacian empire".Herodotus, writing in the 5th century BC, is the first to describe the Getae as Thracian tribes. Excerpt: The 2009 civil unrest in Moldova began on April 7, 2009, in major cities of Moldova (including the capital Chiinu and Bli) after the results of the 2009 Moldovan parliamentary election were announced. The demonstrators claimed that the elections, which saw the governing Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM) win a majority of seats, were fraudulent, and variably demanded a recount, a new election, or resignation of the government. Similar demonstrations took place in other major Moldovan cities, including the country's second largest, Bli, where over 7,000 people protested. The protesters organized themselves using an online social network service, Twitter, hence its moniker used by the media, the Twitter Revolution or Grape revolution. In Chiinu, where the number of protesters rose above 15,000, the demonstration escalated into a riot on April 7. Rioters attacked the parliament building and presidential office, breaking windows, setting furniture on fire and stealing property. The unrest began as a public protest after the announcement of preliminary election results on April 6, 2009, which showed the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova victorious, winning approximately 50% of the votes. Final results, published on April 8, showed that the PCRM garnered 49.48 percent of the vote, gaining 60 parliament seats one less than the three-fifths required for the party to control the presidential election. The opposition rejected the election results, accusing the authorities of falsification in the course of counting the votes and demanded new elections. The PCRM has been in power since 200...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22315801 ... Read more

Excerpt: Sfatul rii was in 1917-1918 the National Assembly (parliament) of the Governorate (guberniya, province) of Bessarabia of the disintegrating Russian Empire, which proclaimed the independent Moldavian Democratic Republic in December 1917, and then union with Romania in April (according to the old style, March) 1918. In August 1914, the First World War started, and 300,000 Bessarabians were mobilized and enrolled in the army of the Russian Empire, the majority in the immediate wake of Russian defeat under Warsaw, when Russian authorities felt desperate. By March 1917, the military actions on the Eastern Front have come to stalemate. Gatherings, meetings, manifestations, conferences of soldiers in the rear of the front line dominated. Many called for a Republic (the Tsar has abdicated in March 1917, but the Russian Provisional Government that took its place has proclaimed the Empire a Republic only in September 1917), and most importantl...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8922890 ... Excerpt: The origin of the Romanians - the ethnogenesis of the Romanian people (speakers of a Romance language in Southeastern Europe) - can be traced back to the regions Romanized inhabitants living, within the Roman Empire, in the lands north of the Jireek Line (an imaginary line which had divided the influences of the Latin and Greek languages in Southeastern Europe before the 7th century). Besides the Romans and the Romanized autochthonous population (Dacians, Thracians or Illyrians), the Slavs also played a vital role in the formation of the Romanians. Excerpt: Battle of Vaslui - The Battle of Vaslui (also referred to as the Battle of Podul Înalt or the Battle of Racova) was fought on January 10, 1475 between Stephen III of Moldavia and the Ottoman Beylerbey of Rumelia, Hadân Suleiman Pasha. The battle took place at Podul Înalt (the High Bridge), near the town of Vaslui, in Moldavia (now part of eastern Romania). The Ottoman troops numbered up to 120,000, facing about 40,000 Moldavian troops, plus smaller numbers of allied and mercenary troops. Stephen inflicted on the Ottomans a decisive defeat that has been described as "the greatest ever secured by the Cross against Islam," with casualties, according to Venetian and Polish records, reaching beyond 40,000 on the Ottoman side. Mara Brankovic (Mara Hatun), who had formerly been the younger wife of Murad II, told a Venetian envoy that the invasion had been worst ever defeat for the Ottomans. Stephen was later awarded the title "Athleta Christi" (Champion of Christ) by Pope Sixtus IV, who referred to him as "Verus christiane fidei aletha" (The true defender of the Christian faith). According to the Polish chronicler Jan Dugosz, Stephen did not celebrate his victory; instead, he fasted for forty days on bread and water and forbade anyone to attribute the victory to him, insisting that credit be given only to "The Lord." Excerpt: This article is part of the series:Politics and government ofMoldova The post-independence of Moldova started after the independence of Moldova. In December 1991, an ex-communist reformer, Mircea Snegur, ran an unopposed election for the presidency. On March 2, 1992, the country achieved formal recognition as an independent state at the United Nations. The Soviet system was falling apart quickly, and Moldovan leadership decided to rely on itself to bring the breakaway Transnistria back under its control. In April 1992, the Parliament formed a Ministry of Defense, and Moldova began to organize its own armed forces. In 1992, Moldova became involved in a brief conflict against local insurgents in Transnistria, who were aided by locally stationed Russian armed forces and Don Cossacks, which resulted in the failure of Moldova to regain control over the breakaway republic. A ceasefire for this war was negotiated by presidents Mircea Snegur and Boris Yeltsin in July 1992. A demarcation line was to be maintained by a tripartite peacekeeping force (composed of Moldovan, Russian, and Transnistrian forces), and Moscow agreed to withdraw its 14th Army in parallel with finding a permanent solution for Transnistrian conflict. Also, Transnistria would have a special status within Moldova and would have the right to secede if Moldova changed its statehood, for instance by uniting with Romania. Excerpt: Transnistria, during World War II, was a region of the USSR, occupied by Romania, during the maximum eastward expansion of the Axis Powers, from August 19, 1941 to January 29, 1944. Limited in the west by the Dniester river, in the east by the Southern Bug river, and in the south by the Black Sea, it comprised present-day Transnistria (which compared to the whole was only a small portion along the bank of the Dniester) and territories further east, including the Black Sea port of Odessa, which became the capital of Transnistria during WWII. In World War II, Romania, persuaded and aided by Nazi Germany, took control of Transnistria for the first time in history. There was never any attempt to formally annex the occupied territory beyond the Dniester (Romanian: ) River: it was generally considered merely a temporary buffer zone between Greater Romania and the Soviet front line. Transnistria had never been considered part of Bessarabia. In August 1941, Adolf Hitler persuaded Ion Antonescu to take control of Transnistria as a substitute for Northern Transylvania, occupied by Horthy's Hungary. Romania did not annex Transnistria; the Nazi-friendly Antonescu government hoped to annex the territory eventually, but developments on the Eastern Front precluded it . Romania controlled (August 19, 1941 January 29, 1944) the whole "Transnistrian" region between the Dniester and Bug rivers and the Black Sea coast. The region was divided into 13 judee (counties).Romanian opposition parties were against Romanian operations beyond Bessarabia and Bukovina.
