Excerpt: Inhabited by Dacians in the antiquity and Romanized Dacians in the early Middle Ages, most of today's Moldova was part of the Principality of Moldavia from its founding in 1359 until 1812, when it was annexed (under the name Bessarabia) by the Russian Empire following one of several Russian-Turkish wars. In 1918, Bessarabia united with Romania, but in 1940 it was occupied by the Soviet Union, to become independent when the latter broke up in 1991. The cultural heritage of the Principality of Moldavia stands at the core of the identity of Moldova. During prehistoric times there was a succession of cultures that flourished in the land of present-day Moldova from the end of the Ice Age up through the Neolithic Age, the Copper Age, the Bronze Age, and the beginning of the Iron Age, when historical records begin to be made about the people who lived in these lands. These cultures included the Linear Pottery Culture (ca. 55004500 BC), the Yamna Culture (ca. 3600-2300 BC), and the Cucuteni-Trypillian Culture (ca. 5500-2750 BC). During this period of time there were many innovations and advancements made, ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=19241 ... Read more

Product Description
The Cucuteni-Trypillian culture, also known as Cucuteni culture (from Romanian), Trypillian culture (from Ukrainian) or Tripolie culture (from Russian), is a late Neolithic archaeological culture that flourished between ca. 5500 BC and 2750 BC, from the Carpathian Mountains to the Dniester and Dnieper regions in modern-day Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine, encompassing an area of more than 35,000 km2 (13,500 square miles). At its peak the Cucuteni-Trypillian culture built the largest Neolithic settlements in Europe, some of which had populations of up to 10,000 to 15,000 people. One of the most notable aspects of this culture was that every 60?80 years the inhabitants of a settlement would burn their entire village. The reason for the burning of the settlements is a subject of debate among scholars; many of the settlements were reconstructed several times on top of earlier settlements, preserving the shape and the orientation of the older buildings. One example, in Poduri, Romania, a total of thirteen habitation levels were constructed on top of each other at the same site. ... Read more

Product Description

Anatoly Kulik and Susanna Pshizova have compiled an engaging and comprehensive, cross-national study that explores the stormy political developments in the post-Soviet countries. They gathered essays regarding the formation of the various new democratic institutions of Russia, the Baltic States, the Slavic States, and Moldova. The contributors are all distinguished scholars indigenous to their areas of focus; consequently, they are able to provide a true insider's perspective of the political climates of their respective lands. Kulik and Pshizova have organized the studies into seven generously detailed, nation-specific chapters that permit readers to see the individual party systems in both their sub-regional contexts as well as in their national ones.

The Newly Independent States that appeared after the collapse of the Soviet Union faced the necessity of creating their own democratic political systems in the first months of independence. While each state had the same basic task and came out of roughly the same background, each country implemented its own methods of government rule: they each pursued different paths with different outcomes. It is logical to view and study the states as a group, but also necessary to see them as individual governments with individual policies and political cultures.

Excerpt: The Soviet occupation of northeastern Romania was the military occupation of Bessarabia (44,000 km., 3.2 million population), Northern Bukovina (6,000 km, 500,000 population), together with the Hertza region (304 km, 25,000 population) by the Soviet Red Army from Romania, which occurred on 28 June - 4 July 1940, as well as the subsequent incorporation of these territories into the Soviet Union. This move was a consequence of the secret protocol of the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, and was made possible by the Fall of France, that rendered the Anglo-French guarantees of Romania's territorial integrity meaningless. The USSR had planned to accomplish the annexation with a full-scale invasion, but the Romanian government, under a Soviet ultimatum delivered on June 26, agreed to withdraw its troops and administration from the territories in order to avoid a military conflict. Both Italy and Germany had been made aware prior of the planned ultimatum on June 24 and had not informed the Romanians, nor were they prepared to provide support. On August 2, 1940, the Moldavian SSR was created as a constituent republic of the USSR, the precursor to the modern Republic of Moldova, which encompasses the annexed territories except for Chernivtsi Oblast and Southern Bessarab...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=6886136 ... Excerpt:This article is a brief outline of the history of the Bessarabian Jews .Early history Jewish man in Kishinev (1900)Torah scrolls presented by Jewish community of Kishinev to Nicholas II . 1914.Jews are mentioned from very early in the Principality of Moldavia , but they did not represent a significant number. Their main activity in Moldavia was commerce , but they could not compete with Greeks and Armenians , which had the knowledge of the Levantine commerce and relationships. Several times, when Jewish merchants created monopolies in some localities in north of Moldavia, Moldavian rulers sent them back to Galicia and Podolia . One such example was during the reign of Petru chioul (1583 - 1591), who favored the English merchants led by William Harborne . In the 18th century, more Jews started to settle in Moldavia. Some of them were in charge of the Dniester crossings, replacing Moldavians and Greeks, until the Captain of Soroca demanded their expulsion. Others traded with spirits (horilka ), first brought in from Ukraine , afterwards building local velni a s (pre-industrial distillatories) on boyar manors. The number of... ... Read more

Excerpt:St. Teodora de la Sihla Church Romanian Orthodox Church organization with the Metropolis of Bessarabia on the right in brown. Administrative map of the Romanian Orthodox Church, including the Metropolis of BessarabiaThe Metropolis of Bessarabia (Romanian: ) is one of the metropoles of the Romanian Orthodox Church, aside from the six metropoles inside Romania proper. The Metropolis of Bessarabia was created in 1923 and organized in 1925, when the Archbishopric of Chiinu was raised to the rank of metropolis. Inactive during the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia (1940-1941) and the Soviet rule in Moldova (1944-1991), it was re-activated on September 14, 1992, on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. In 1995, the Metropolis of Bessarabia was raised to the rank of exarchate, with jurisdiction over the Romanian Orthodox communities of the ex-Soviet bloc and the Moldovan diaspora worldwide. The current Metropolitan of Bessarabia is Petru Pduraru. It was founded after the annexation of Bessarabia by the Russian Empire in 1812, from the churches and monasteries of the Metropolis of Moldavia on that territory that no longer belonged to the Principality of Moldavia, by Gavriil Bnulescu-Bodoni, a popular promoter of Moldavian/Romanian language and culture, who served also as its first Metropolitan. In 1918, Metropolitan Anastasius Gribanovsky was ousted after he refused to accede to the Romania's demand to secede from the Russian Orthodox Church and subordinate to the Romanian one.
