1-0 out of 5 stars A poorly researched book with factual and other errors
Sadly, this is one of the very few books with information on this part of the world - and it gets many facts wrong. This book is obvoiusly aimed at the K-12 market, and aims to function as a primer on this region.Unfortunately, it fails.

* Ukrainian place names are invariably given inRussian instead of Ukrainian (for example, Kyiv is spelled Kiev in thisbook).

* Moldovan place names are either not spelled correctly - e.g."Belsiy" for Balti, or given in Russian - e.g."Kishinev" for Chisinau.

* Country names are not accurate - forexample, the German Democratic Republic is labeled as "EastGermany".

* Information on these countries' ethnic minorities isshallow. The Gagauz and Bulgarian minorities in Moldova are simply labeledas "other", and the percentage of the pie chart given to these"others" is wrong (13 per cent instead of approximately 4 percent).

* Finally, many other details are wrong. For example, Moldova isdescribed as having "abundant natural resources and well-developedindustries", when in fact Moldova imports nearly all of its power andnatural resources, and has virtually no developed industry save for somedecaying factories in the Trans-Dniestr Republic.

In short, save yourmoney. If you're looking for information on these countries, lookelsewhere. ... Read more

Product Description

The first English-language book to present a complete picture of this intriguing East European borderland, The Moldovans: Romania, Russia, and the Politics of Culture, illuminates the perennial problems of identity politics and cultural change that the country has endured.Throughout the past two centuries, Moldova was the object of a variety of culture-building efforts from Russian, Romanian, and Soviet influences before emerging as an independent state in 1991. The author

  • Highlights the political uses of culture—the ways in which language, history, and identity can be manipulated by political elites
  • Examines why some attempts to mold identity succeed where others fail
  • Reveals why, in the case of Moldova, a project of identity construction succeeded in creating a state but failed to make an independent nation
  • "Thoroughly researched, engagingly written, and completely up to date, this is a definitive book that will long serve as the best study of Moldova in any language . . . . Its strategic and precarious location between the Balkans and the former Soviet Union and its complex ethnic composition make Moldova a fragile new nation well worth knowing about."Daniel Chirot, Professor of International Studies

    Jackson School of International Studies

    University of Washington

"An erudite and perceptive book. Required reading for all those who want to fathom the relationship between national identity, nation-building, political traditions, and cultural yearnings in one of eastern Europe's least known and understood countries. King uses historical, political, economic, and cultural approaches to challenge old stereotypes and to propose a novel, original perspective on the peoples of Bessarabia and Transnistria."Vladimir Tismaneanu, Professor of Government and PoliticsUniversity of Maryland (College Park)

4-0 out of 5 stars Tries to be unbiased and neutral
Charles King, the author of the book, is an assistant professor in the School of Foreign Service and the Department of Government at Georgetown University. Funding for the research on which this book is based, was provided at various stages by the British Marshall Commemoration Commission, in the form of a British Marshal Scholarsip; St. Antony's College and New College, Oxford; the Social Science Research Council, via a Graduate Training Fellowship; and Georgetown University, through the Ion Ratiu Chair of Romanian Studies, to which the author was elected in 1996. Although the author tries to be unbiased and wants to keep neutral point of view, the book somewhat reflects the point of view supported by the organizations above mentioned, and also by the official political point of view of Western countries towards the Republic of Moldova (RM) at a time of writing of this book, although the archival and library resources used by the author were located mainly in Romania and RM. The major sources of information were The Central Historical Archive Division of the National Archives of Romania in Bucharest; the former archive of the Communist Party of Moldova (now renamed to the Archive of Social-Political Organizations of the Republic of Moldova); as well as other sources.

I have used this book as a source of Historical Data to contribute to Wikipedia articles related to Moldova.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellently Written
Charles King's "The Moldovans" is an excellently written history of a little known East European borderland and its intriguing people. While its physical appearance and membership in the Hoover Institute's old "Nationalities of the USSR" series may indicate dry and rigid academic work, it is certainly not.
King here has written an interesting history of the Bessarabian/Moldovan people, the first in English, through the context of nation and national identity building. History buffs and area enthusiasts will find themselves enjoying the blend of history, politics and more recent events within newly independent Moldova. For an introduction and some answers to the convoluted and confusing intra-state conflict with the DMR (Transnistria), look here.
The subject could be considered college reading but the writing is clean, clear and professional at a point where you know a highly laudable individual is behind this work, but not some Cornell West writing for the benefit of his fellow academics. King's history is incredibly lucid and readable. This is good history as it should be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional and thorough.
This is an exceptional and thorough review of the history of Moldova up to, during, and after the transition to independence from the Soviet Union by an outstanding scholar. While replete with scholarly notes and bibliography, it is also readily accessable to the non-specialist seeking to understand this very interesting country. ... Product Description
"Why has social peace been preserved in some new, nationalizing countries in Eastern Europe and broken down in others? While civil peace has reigned in Estonia, Moldova experienced a bloody civil war in 1992, claiming more than a thousand casualties. These two states in question share a number of common characteristics, but there is one important difference.National Integration and Violent Conflict in Post-Soviet Societies analyzes processes of nation-building and ethnic integration in Estonia and Moldova in order to increase our general understanding of how social peace remains strong in one place and disintegrates in another. Chapters employ both on the ground" empirical studies and a strong theoretical framework to discuss theories on ethnic violence in the modern world and their possible relevance for these two cases. Additionally, the results of two large-scale surveys and four country chapters written by scholars living and working in Moldova and Estonia round out the book's exploration of each country's similarities and differences. The resulting volume contributes to a better understanding of national integration process in Estonia and Moldova and of national integration and communal violence in general." ... Read more

    Product Description

Judge's book is the best to date on the Kishinev pogrom of 1903.In seven gracefully written chapters, the author lays out the background of the Jewish question in Russia, profiles the city of Kishinev, narrates the events leading up to and included in the pogrom, and analyzes its causes and effects.
    -Choice

A detailed re-examination of the notorious Kishinev pogrom of 1903.
    -East European Jewish Affairs

In February of 1903, in a town in the southwestern part of the Russian empire, a peasant stumbled upon the corpse of 14-year old Mikhail Rybachenko, bruised and covered with stab wounds, in a garden. The murder immediately fueled wild rumors that he had been killed by local Jews in need of his Christian blood to prepare their matzah bread. Panic rumors, grounded in sinister superstitions of Jewish sorcery and ritual murder, quickly spread to nearby towns. By April, they had hit Kishinev -- a growing metropolis of 100,000 inhabitants rife with the unrest of rapid expansion, ethnic rivalry, revolutionary agitation, and anti-Semitism -- with full force. The resulting massacre left dozens dead, and hundreds wounded, maimed, widowed, orphaned or homeless.
This is the story of Kishinev. In this extensively researched book, Edward Judge examines these anti-Jewish riots, detailing their background, cause, and aftermath. He traces the evolution of the riots, analyzing the broader impact of imperial policies, urbanization, nationalism, population growth, and revolutionary activism upon the Jewish situation in Russia.Recounting the activities and attitudes of anti- semitic agitators and Kishinev officials, the book examines the spiral of violence, the inaction of the authorities in the wake of the pogrom, the

storm of indignation that followed the pogrom, and the efforts of tsarist officials to counter subsequent negative publicity. EASTER IN KISHINEV also portrays the investigation of the disorders and the trials of the rioters and carefully considers the question of government responsibility for the outbreak of the pogrom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Great detailed coverage of why the pogrom occurred, what led to it occurring, what happened while it was going on, and what the outcome was for both the victims and perpetrators. The book is a pretty small one, but it encompasses everything you need to know about this specific event in Russian history. The history of the city is given as well as the reason for why Jews were such a large part of the population. How the town was mainly run by anti-Semites and what they did to help push people over the edge and create violence toward the Jewish members of the city.Starting with the blood libel from another town which was disproved to have been the work of Jews but nonetheless held up as fact within Kishinev's newspapers which increased feelings against Jews and ending with all out violence that went unchecked until the second day when the military was given all power to handle the situation.A large portion of the city was damaged and men, women, and children were killed, raped, robbed, beaten, etc.Questions about how much was the government really involved are never clearly answered, there is evidence to support both arguments that it was and wasn't.But both are presented and the reader is given the choice of deciding on his/her own.Overall an excellent book, a quick read, and very informational and detailed. ... Product Description
The Republic of Moldova claims a European lineage reaching back in time long before its 14th century accession to statehood. In the 15th century, it managed against all odds to avoid being conquered by Islam and-albeit an intermittent vassal after 1485-it maintained its autonomy and was never turned into a province of the Ottoman Empire. After this period, however, Moldova would not be so fortunate, as it altered between Russian, Romanian, and Soviet control until it finally gained its independence in 1991 from the Soviet Union. The A to Z of Moldova, through its chronology, introduction, appendixes, maps, bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, events, and institutions and significant political, economic, social, and cultural aspects, traces the history of this small, but densely populated country, providing a compass for the direction it is heading. ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Bastarnae or Basternae were an ancient tribal group of probably mixed Celtic and Germanic origin which, between not later than 200 BC and until at least 300 AD, inhabited the region between the eastern Carpathian mountains and the Dnieper river (corresponding to the modern Republic of Moldova and western part of southern Ukraine). A branch of the Bastarnae, called the Peucini by Greco-Roman writers, occupied the region north of the Danube river delta. Although possibly Celtic-speaking in 179 BC, the Bastarnae probably were Germanic in language and culture during the 1st century AD, but appear to have become assimilated by their neighbouring Sarmatians by the 3rd century. Like the latter, they were probably semi-nomadic. It has not yet been possible to identify specific Bastarnae archaeological sites. ... Read more

In December 2001, a new Russian law laying the basis for the peaceful territorial expansion of the Russian Federation went into effect. The entire country of Belarus-as well as parts of Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine-are the most likely candidates to join Russia. Should this largely ethnically-based expansion occur, Russia would grow by more than 20 million people, and the resultant rise in Russian nationalism might encourage further Russian territorial ambitions-especially those directed at Ukraine. Even if Russian expansion stops with all, or part, of these territories, however, it could breathe new life into the ethnically based border problems of other countries.
