I ordered my book on the 8/30/2010 and emailed the seller before I placed my order since they offered the problem book for free with the textbook. I didn't hear anything from the seller so I bought the book since it was available. Then two weeks passed and I didn't receive the books I ordered. I contact the seller again. That was when it contacted me telling me that the book was sold out and that they forgot to remove it from the list!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fantastic book of biology
Fantastic book for the basics to the border of intermediate/advanced knowledge. This is a definite buy for anyone starting in the field and will be a valuable resource for a long time. For the most in depth information on some topics, more resources will definitely be needed, but is an excellent starting point.

There are a few specialized topics I wish it would have covered more (ERVs for example), however, for the overall general information about the interworkings of a cell, this book is invaluable and will be a first resource for most biological topics.

For some this may be a bit hard to understand as it gets into a LOT of detail over certain things, but it does have useful pictures and a variety of topics are covered. I found it amazing for explaining certain assays.

It's okay...
I had to purchase it for a college course.I wish I did not have to buy it, but found it a little helpful but not much.It is just very time consuming.If you don't have time to work on it, and you are not required to buy it, I would say save yourself the extra cash:)

I bought this for my son who is taking a course this semester and needed this book.I ordered the book from Amazon.com because its much cheaper thanmy son's college bookstore.

Great study tool!!
I purchased this book because my cell bio professor said he was going to be using it for in class work.I am a grad student majoring in cell biology and I have enjoyed both the problems book and the text that accompanies it.The layout is organized in a way that it is easy to find what your looking for, and the videos, problems and answer explanations on the CD that comes with both books (the problems book and the text book) are extremely helpful.

I would definately recommend these books to someone interested in cell biology.It is as up to date as it can be with regards to new developments in the field (things are discovered and changed almost everyday in cell biology), but the book provides extensive background information as well as detailed accounts of developments, both new and old, contributions to the field and additional resources.

Good substitute for 5th Ed.
The diagrams are great in this book.

I'm using this instead of 5th Edition, and so far everything is the same. The CD uses outdated software, so it may be upgraded for 5th.

I only read the first chapter so far, but it is written in a simple language and easy to follow. it was recommended by several fellow students.

I do agree with most of the reviews.
This book is just simply alright. Yes I know this book goes into details that aren't traditionally covered in US schools, but we did cover all of it in Europe. So I would say that this book would be something I would use do compliment FA because it does lack Molecular.

Worked Great for Me
I haven't taken the boards, but this book really helped me with my first round of tests in med school.It pretty much took all the stuff we had learned in lecture and put it in a user-friendly format.It might be too detailed for the boards (that's what other reviewers said), but it is great for med school tests.

Example of a bad "review" book.
If you read in the front of first aid, it says that you shouldn't waste your time on textbooks when reviewing for Step 1.The reason for this is because, for example, a pharmacology book would contain dosage information when you don't need it for step 1.This book is a HORRIBLE review book.It goes into more detail in some areas than I learned in undergrad.It seems to be written from a research perspective rather than a clinically relevant perspective.Every gene location that is named in this book goes into the chromosome number, location, region, subregion, subband, and sub-subband.Yes, I learned aforementioned terminology from this book.I would suggest finding a different review book or maybe just reading the bold stuff and picking and choosing what you want to read.The high yield series really dropped the ball on this edition of this book.

I have read similar books on this topic, and this one is by far the best. It explains everything very well, and makes biology seem much easier. I believe that anyone can excel in science, if they want to and try hard enough. I would highly recommend this book for students who want to improve their grades in biology.

Very clear explanation of a very complex subject
This book did just what I had hoped it would do.It took a very complex subject and explained it in as simple terms as possible.I've never had a formal course in biology, but I had watched all the lectures in an MIT Open Courseware course on the subject that had left me confused about a number of things.Of course, this book is not as comprehensive as a full course, but it did clarify a number of things for me. Many of the illustrations are much better than in the textbook that the MIT course was based on.Near the end of the book the author began giving specific study tips -- what things a student needs to be familiar with and what things they need to have down cold. In fact, the last chapter is entitled "Ten Ways to Improve Your Grade."I thought this a little strange, because the introduction does not mention this aspect of the book.It is done unobtrusively, so it shouldn't lessen a non-student's enjoyment of the book.I mention it because it might be a big plus to some prospective readers. ... I would not recommend ordering anything from them!
Customer service is a joke, so don't waste your time writing emails because they never respond.I ordered two books from separate companies at the same time a month ago, I received the one book a week later and STILL do not have the one I needed from NTDbooks.Do not waste your time ordering from them because all you will get is a headache and have to go and find your book elsewhere anyways...

How Biochemists and Artists have Taken Over Molecular Biology
For those of you who have read the 1st or 2nd edition of this book, low those many decades ago, the 6th edition is a fantastic read. The problem is that there is no published theory (Including quantum mechanics) that quantitatively describes the vector forces acting on molecules within biologic cells. This has resulted in a proliferation of wild ideas as to the physical dimensions, mass and chemical properties of biologic molecules to explain experimental results e.g. The synthesis of proteins from amino acids.
The text is eminently readable and of profound interest, but a quantitative physical theory of the origin of the vector forces that act on the ~Avogadro's Number of atoms that come together to form a biologic organelle is necessary in order to understand how DNA encodes for an organelle. Whatever the physical mechanism is that creates vector forces in the biologic cell, that mechanism must also be encoded by DNA.

I placed the order on 01/14/09 for my son in College and he counted on it to study for his assignment that week-end. horrible gramatic structure
while the content is interesting, the poor grammar throughout the text makes it difficult to understand. There are run-on sentences in every paragraph, as matter of fact, many long paragraphs are just one sentence! This book could use a good editor.

A great book! But for medical school? I hope not.
I purchased this review book to help me study for my Cell and Molecular biology class and it did just that, it was a great review book. It carries the most important points, in a small amount of detail, with great pictures so you can begin to see the activity of a cell as a whole.

It served its purpose for me but, on a tangent, I can't imagine how this is a suitable review book for medical school. The biochemistry lippincott's sure, that thing has 500 pages packed with detail. This one is not nearly as detailed as the lippincott's biochemistry review.

It's a great review tool for undergraduate courses. For medical school, which these are often used for, it might be great too but I'd like to think anyone in medical school knows the amount of cell and molecular biology contained in this book cold.

Great book but HEAVY!
I will be getting my BS in Biology this month and have had many science books.
This is a great book but it is just too big to take to class or school on a regular basis.

Book was not bound correctly and the some of the videos in DVD don't work
I bought this reference edition (5th) on Barnes and Noble's website a year ago.
Because I was only using it occasionally for quick reference, I had not perused the entire content.

Unfortunately, when I tried to read Chapter 19 recently, I noticed that it was cut abruptly.
In addition, I noticed that Chapter 17 and part of 18 are inexplicably printed twice while beginning of Chapter 20 is missing.
Of course, Barnes and Noble did not honor my request for an exchange and the publisher seems to be unreachable, as they seem to be based on UK and the only method of contacting them is filling out a question on their website.

I bought this reference edition because I thought it would be worthwhile book to keep for years.
In this imperfect condition, however, it was a worthless investment, and yes, it was an investment at this price near 200 dollars.

Finally, the last draw was the fact that some videos on the DVD did not work.
They simply wouldn't play, whether it was through their Flash program or just through Quicktime, or whatever program I used.
This cannot be my computer's problem because I have tried it on my Mac as well as a new PC, and neither worked.

It's a disgrace that anyone should deal with this kind of an issue on a book that is priced like a mini encyclopedia.

As for content, I find it to be sufficiently satisfactory. It is a bit superficial, but then it is a survey book of an incredible number of topics so that is to be expected.
If I need more details, I can always just go to the journals.

Overall, great content, but terrible binding. Others may not have the same binding problem.

Excellent Book
This book arrived 3 days before i had a protein lab report due and it was a godsend. Trying to cover the subject depth required in the precipitant lectures is next to impossible and increasingly students are needing to do independent study to gain a definitive understanding. This text covers so many topics and in such great detail as well. Other texts cover similar areas but i have not found any that deliver the level of detail that this one does. It covers complex themes and delivers them in an easy to understand format. I also like the fact that it is red as it helps it stand out from the hundred other texts in my bookcase. I would thoroughly encourage anyone studying any biological science to add this text to their collection.

Work of Passion
The fifth edition of MBoC (Molecular Biology of the Cell) is great. I have been taking Cell Biology classes and this book complements what the teacher doesn't have time to say in classroom and explains very nicely the parts I don't understand well in class. The texts are well structured and well written. The videos which come together in the DVD really give you on-the-moving kinda way of samples of what you read non-moving on the pages. =)

The book is a work of passion (I have been wanting to write this last phrase for some time now... LOL); but really, you can see how the people who wrote it love what they do. Cells are amazing little things and you have no idea of how they work so hard, intricately and non-stop. You can have a glimpse at the extraordinary machinery cells are.
If you like this area of science, Cell Biology, do buy this book and study it hard. I recommend to all that want to change this world, be he student or teacher.

The single complain I have got is that there are NO answers for the end-of-chapter problems they wrote! You need to buy that Problems Book Molecular Biology of the Cell, Fifth Edition: The Problems Book. Oh well.

It may also be worth mentioning that selling used textbooks online through Amazon is very easy, and if you sell them before a new edition comes out, you often can recoup 1/3 to 1/2 of original purchase price.So as soon as you know that one of those expensive tomes on your shelf is a dog, list it online immediately while it still has value.And if on the other hand you know you will have to get the new edition of a book when it is available, dump the previous edition just before a new one is due, and use the money toward the new edition. ... I'm still in search of the very basic explanations of all sciences to keep as reference materials for when I start teaching general science to Highschoolers.Although molecular biology can be considered difficult for most students, this book does a pretty good job explaining the material.But for harder concepts,it can still be quite challenging.

Cant' get enough of it !!
This beats the pants off those 'for dummy' books, including the one on biochemistry. I particularly like how the author has a sustained span of attention, where each new concept depends on the previous ones even as the chapters accumulate. Other authors tend to drop names then hurry off, giving cursory 1-liner to complicated concepts without taking the time to build them up systematically. I also like the use of margin for details so you don't wander off the main concepts. This is very effective. I wish web pages are like this, as we tend to eventually wander way off the track, including wikipedia. This book reminds me a lot of the Feynman lecture series, maybe good enough for college, high school students, non-biology experts from other fields, and logical lay people. Speaking of logical, the cover may trigger FOX news fans to call this book communist or nazi inspired though, just kidding.

I saw the 4th edition yesterday on the rack at my local bookstore. Can anyone (possibly the author?) list here what is new and updated?


3rd Edition: A great book because everything is presented for someone who wants to catch up, review, and basically find out what all the talk is concerning Molecular Biology. While the presentation starts with the basics, you get as much detail/depth as you want.

The science news in the NY Times, the CNBC reports on pharmaceutical discoveries, and CDC releases on the Flu virus drove me to get a better handle on what's going on and this book does a great job helping me.

Awesome book
This is one of the best books I've read so far. The authors of this book do a great job at making it interesting to read. It has a good amount of humor in it and is worded so that anybody can understand it unlike other lame textbooks where you have to read the text 5 times or so to understand what they're trying to say. This is definitely a great textbook.

sufficient for what it is...
This book is by no means as comprehensive as an actual textbook that covers molecular biology. However, if for whatever reason you cannot get a textbook, I found this book helpful in most aspects covered for the subject. Having said that, if your professor is very detailed you will find yourself seeking other resources to get the information. I give it 3 stars simply because I think it serves it's purpose. It's meant to be a concise reference for the subject, and I think it works perfectly fine as that.

Instant notes - Molecular Bio
This was a great book.Like getting the notes from a real smart friend.I needed to quickly update my skills. I got it from the library and didn't want to return it.All of my college texts kept me wandering through sentence after sentence - this one straight to the point, but with application notes.

Outstanding technical overview
This is an impressive book intended only for the serious student or major. I was quite pleased to find the book in my local Borders Books, although I would say it's significantly more technical than what most people would probably be looking for there. You'll need to have read at least one other introductory upper-division text or taken a course on cell biology or molecular biology to benefit from it. I have had that but as I am mainly a neurobiologist by training I was pretty rusty at this point and so I only understood about 1/2 of the book. :-)

That having been said, since the book is only about 300 pages you can use it to get a quick refresher or update on many topics as I did. Some of the topics were still familiar, such as basic DNA replication, the cell cycle, and recombination. But some of the more specialized topics weren't, such as the E. coli sigma 70 promoter, cosmids, YACS (yeast artificial chromosomes), and BACS, and RNA Pol III genes: 5S and tRNA transcription. There was also a section on oncogenes which is something I didn't know much about. The illustrations and diagrams are plentiful and are excellent too and really help supplement the text.

This book is an excellent summary of molecular biology.

An enjoyable read with quality content
The Manga Guide to Molecular Biology follows the actions of a two students who failed their molecular biology class and have to take a special summer course. The story line is enjoyable and eases the reader's entry into the topic rather than being a distraction.

The book covers all the main questions and topics you would expect: what is a cell, what are the common parts of a cell, how do cells combine to make various organisms, what are proteins and how do they function within a cell, what is DNA and what are genes and how do they work to express the information coded in them? My favorite part was chapter 5 which focuses on potential applications for everything discussed earlier and theorizes what the future may hold in the field.

I work in a software project that is helping biologists do research, including helping process the vast amounts of data that comes from genetic sequencing. As a result, I have become familiar with most of the content this book presents. I believe the book is accurate and it is clear. The story created to assist with that presentation is enjoyable as well. I have a seven year old daughter that is reading the book with great interest. Some of the science is above her grade level, but her attention remains fixed on the art and the story and she is absorbing some of it as she reads.

Overall, I would say the book is a success and recommend it without reservation.

Good book.
If you are familiar with the Manga Guide series, you will be right at home reading the Molecular Biology edition. Molecular biology suits itself well for being presented in a comic format. The pictures and diagrams of the numerous processes and structures greatly aid in the understanding of the topic. For those new to molecular biology, the Manga Guide is a great introduction. The story begins with explaining all about cells and proceeds to describe DNA and its replication, protein and its interactions, and concludes with discussing genetic technology as well as research. By no means is the Manga Guide more than a basic introduction to the subject, but it makes a great introduction that is very readable and offers some humor to accompany the learning.
For those interested in getting a brief introduction to molecular biology or wanting to review basic concepts, the Manga Guide is a good choice. Throughout each chapter there are breaks from the manga form and the information is presented in a question and answer dialogue between the characters. The question and answer form helps to explain some of the more complex material in an efficient manner and is referred back to many times. Included in the information are applications to read dieses and disorders which relate to the topics that are being discussed. My only criticism is that there are no quizzes at the end of each chapter to test your knowledge.Other than that, The Manga Guide to Molecular Biology is a great introduction into the field and an enjoyable read.

Manga guide to Molecular Biology
I bought this for my granddaughter, but I was so interested that I read it too. Not being a biologist, it was all new to me. I think the author hasdone a very good job at explaining some of the concepts of molecular biology. I have given it to my granddaugher now, and hope that she will read it.

Any school library strong in molecular biology facts needs this
The Manga Guide to Molecular Biology joins others in the 'Manga' series and is a fine collection explaining key scientific and technical subjects using Japanese-style comics. These comics make it easy for students who are slow to absorb science: they offer characters who 'journey' inside the body's cells to learn about core topics in molecular biology, enhancing the learning process with fiction and fact blends. Any school library strong in molecular biology facts needs this.

Overpriced, but beneficial
I bought this as a companion to the Lodish textbook for my undergraduate molecular course.This thin black and white softcover explains solutions to the end of chapter questions; there is no study guide, no additional diagrams to help the student study.The book seems very overpriced at almost fifty dollars for a new copy, especially for something so meager, it could have easily been printed in the back of the actual textbook itself.

Price aside, this is a valuable companion to the textbook because it offers well written explanations to complex chapter problems.

It is helpful if you are going to be answering the questions at the end of each section.I would not pay more than $10.

Thorough, shapeless compendium of molecular biology
Although I don't claim to be a molecular biologist, nor have I read beyond chapter 5 of Lodish's "Molecular and Cell Biology", this textbook feels admirably thorough in its treatment of its subject, bringing the reader up to date on a wide range of the detail generated in the field over the past few decades.

The book's authors, furthermore, have addressed the learning needs of their readership; once it moves into its substantive chapters, virtually all points are made simultaneously with textbook prose and colorful, graphic illustrations which are well drawn and accompanied by excellent captions. This aspect of the book is its great strength.

There is a far more serious problem with the book, however, which explains the middling rating I have given it. Like many such textbooks, it is committee-written, which is not a problem when such books are given proper shape by a sharp editor. But the book lacks that editor and as a result dwells on the most trivial developments in its field with exactly the same weight as its bedrock components to a fault. In aiming to be comprehensive, it drowns the reader in a sea of obnoxious detail that begs the book and its authors not to be taken seriously. The book may have been conceived as a reference, but I fear that it will always be assigned chapter rather than passage at a time, as is customary in graduate school courses.

The corollary to this situation is that the first several chapters of the book describe a host of laboratory processes, each in enormous detail and overall in serial fashion, without adequately describing the use and purpose for each. The book then explains that each process will be taken up in a later chapter in conjunction with an exploration of the field in which it is mainly used. This is all fine, but does the reader really need to be held accountable for a description of these processes twice, particularly when they are presented so haphazardly initially? At least in the first five chapters, rote memorization is the only learning strategy possible for the vast majority of the material. And while there is nothing wrong with rote memorization, the unconnectedness of the material, combined with its sprawling volume, make these initial chapters virtually useless as learning tools.

I recommend this book, therefore, with a strict reservation: it should only be used by a teacher so familiar with it that he can assign "primary", "secondary", and perhaps even "tertiary" passages from it at a time, in order to help the reader build an understanding of molecular biology systematically and rationally structure his study time.

Excellent update on oncology background, state of the art and specialty
This is the book to review if you are behind on understanding the intricate world of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and some of the causes and origins of cancer.Recently released (2009) this book overviews the entire gamut of identification, treatment, response, and follow up.Perfect for medically-oriented patients, family members, or medical school students.This is NOT a book for the lay public - you need to understand medical terminology and the basics of oncology to fully appreciate.That being said, if you are bent on learning more about this area of medicine, start here!

Introductory in molecular biology of cancer
This is a good book to have if you are looking to have basic information on molecular mechanisms of cancer handy. I specifically bought it for the apoptosis chapter but I think it will be useful on many other subjects

Outstanding, a must read.
Dr. Lauren Pecorino has a genius for the plume to equal her mastery of the subject matter.This book is so well done it deserves to be published in every language and included as University required reading.Highly recommended, it is an outstanding work that held interest from the first page.

An Introduction to the Biology of Cancer - and More
I'm one of those people who like to know how things work - especially if those things are inside my body and are likely to shorten my life span.Since my doctors don't tell me anything, I need other sources, and since the Internet is unreliable, I need a guidebook I can trust.Molecular Biology of Cancer turned out to be just the right book for me.It is also an excellent first book for anyone interested in the molecular biology of cancer.

First, as to technical level: This is very much what one expects in an undergraduate science text, with lots of section headings, lots of diagrams, and lots of boxes highlighting important points.If, like me, you're a non-student and non-scientist but interested in the subject, you'll probably find it very readable.You'll need to have some experience of reading diagrams in which symbols (squares, circles, etc.) represent molecules interacting with each other.And you'll have to be comfortable reading books with plenty of technical language.The terms specific to cancer biology should be no problem since they are well-explained and the terms that are in the glossary are printed in red in the text.You won't need to know anything about the chemistry involved in the molecular interactions (nothing about hydrogen bonding or redox, for example).

Some single-celled organisms can simply grow and divide as fast and as long as their food supply allows.Those that live in colonies must have chemical signals to regulate each cell's growth and activity.Mammals, being enormously more complex, need much more sophisticated communication between cells.That means, of course, that there are many things that can go wrong and many mechanisms to fix things that go wrong.And therefore, there are many things to be considered when diagnosing and treating cancer.Pecorino chooses particular examples to explain general principles.

First, a cell normally doesn't divide until a signal from outside sets off a chain of events that leads to division.An error in this chain, caused by an abnormal protein, can cause the cell to divide without the external signal.Pecorino chooses epidermal growth factor (EGF) to show the working of such a chain.When a cell does start to divide out of control, there are mechanisms which try to stop the reproduction, or to kill the cell.Pecorino focuses mostly on one molecule, called P53, which is involved in a number of such mechanisms and is abnormal in a majority of tumors, including mine.Most cells are fastened in place, so it takes a further abnormality for them to break loose.Since most cancers are caused by abnormal or inappropriately expressed genes, DNA repair and regulation are important.Here, Pecorino mentions the BRCA genes, which turn up often in articles about breast cancer.These are major topics, but there is much more than I can mention in an Amazon-size review.

So many genetic flaws don't show up all at once; a cancer is the product of evolution within one body.This is implicit in Molecular Biology of Cancer, but it is more developed in another book, Darwin in the Genome.(See my review for more info; click above on "See all my reviews".)

Given that there are so many molecular systems involved in cancer, one can see why there are many points at which drugs may inhibit or kill cancer cells.Pecorino points out a number of these.She even flags many these with red target icons, symbolizing potential drug targets.Perhaps by the time a student gets to be a researcher, most of these will be passé - a lot of people are working hard on them -- but her aim is to teach them how to spot potential target molecules and interactions and I think she succeeds.

Cancer can be of interest to people who aren't affected by it because, by showing what happens when things go wrong, it gives new insight into how these systems work in general.For those interested in developmental biology, it shows what happens inside a cell in response to a signal whereas most of the books I've read just mention the cellular interactions.Pecorino also gives examples of how a large variety of molecules may be created by mixing and matching a much smaller collection of simpler molecules or domains; this modularity is important in evolution.

So this book will be of interest to a variety of readers for a variety of reasons.Pecorino is particularly interested in students and hopes that some will be inspired by this book to take up cancer research.I second that and I hope that some will find metastatic prostate cancer to be a worthy field. ... Painful and Worthless
I bought this book in a bundle with two other Schaum's Outlines: one in Biochemistry and one in Genetics.I had intended to use them as a review in preparation for the Biochemistry, Molecular, and Cell Biology Subject GRE.I have been sorely disappointed.First of all, this book is out of date.It was written in 1996 and the field of molecular biology has transformed in multiple ways over the past 13 years.I continually had to question some of the conclusions of the book across multiple chapters.More often than not I went back to my text books from undergrad to review the topics and what has changed.I eventually skipped chapters all together and just read those in my old textbooks.But not only is this book out of date, it is also poorly written.Topics don't flow, bullets are confusing.The general narative of the book is convoluted and confusing.I've finally moved on to the biochemistry book, and I'm starting to find the same issues.I am disappointed that I actually spent money on this book.Look for other reivews, or simply look at a textbook.This book is not worth it.

definitely worth 10 dollars
This guide contains details about biology that are concise and at least as good as, if not more detailed than 2+ years of introductory biology courses. Though not an introductory guide, an excellent resource.

an excellent introduction
I am a Macromolecular crystallographer and have never formally attended any courses on molecular biology or biochemistry. I find these Schaum series books to be very useful. They are very concise, and provide all the information one needs to achieve a good understanding of the basic concepts and terminology. Another advantage is that they are paperbacks and easier to read compared to the heavier and more detailed texts like Stryer or Lehninger.

A Must HAVE! Seriously!
I loved this study guide; it was very helpful since my teacher was a power-point teacher, and a terrible one at that. It definitely helps to read this instead of the book; this book will be big help when you are trying to review for a comprehensive final.

The Reviewing Outline is the most helpful part of the study guide since each chapter of the textbook is 75 pages long and takes about 6 hours to get through.
