I should be destitute of feeling if I was not deeply affected by the strong proof which my fellow-citizens have given me of their confidence in calling me to the high office whose functions I am about to assume. As the expression of their good opinion of my conduct in the public service, I derive from it a gratification which those who are conscious of having done all that they could to merit it can alone feel. My sensibility is increased by a just estimate of the importance of the trust and of the nature and extent of its duties, with the proper discharge of which the highest interests of a great and free people are intimately connected. Conscious of my own deficiency, I can not enter on these duties without great anxiety for the result. From a just responsibility I will never shrink, calculating with confidence that in my best efforts to promote the public welfare my motives will always be duly appreciated and my conduct be viewed with that candor and indulgence which I have experienced in other stations.

In commencing the duties of the chief executive office it has been the practice of the distinguished men who have gone before me to explain the principles which would govern them in their respective Administrations. In following their venerated example my attention is naturally drawn to the great causes which have contributed in a principal degree to produce the present happy condition of the United States. They will best explain the nature of our duties and shed much light on the policy which ought to be pursued in future.

From the commencement of our Revolution to the present day almost forty years have elapsed, and from the establishment of this Constitution twenty-eight. Through this whole term the Government has been what may emphatically be called self-government. And what has been the effect? To whatever object we turn our attention, whether it relates to our foreign or domestic concerns, we find abundant cause to felicitate ourselves in the excellence of our institutions. During a period fraught with difficulties and marked by very extraordinary events the United States have nourished beyond example. Their citizens individually have been happy and the nation prosperous.

Under this Constitution our commerce has been wisely regulated with foreign nations and between the States; new States have been admitted into our Union; our territory has been enlarged by fair and honorable treaty, and with great advantage to the original States; the States, respectively protected by the National Government under a mild, parental system against foreign dangers, and enjoying within their separate spheres, by a wise partition of power, a just proportion of the sovereignty, have improved their police, extended their settlements, and attained a strength and maturity which are the best proofs of wholesome laws well administered. And if we look to the condition of individuals what a proud spectacle does it exhibit! On whom has oppression fallen in any quarter of our Union? Who has been deprived of any right of person or property? Who restrained from offering his vows in the mode which he prefers to the Divine Author of his being? It is well known that all these blessings have been enjoyed in their fullest extent; and I add with peculiar satisfaction that there has been no example of a capital punishment being inflicted on anyone for the crime of high treason.

his fathers, an air of sanctity, never witnessed while

tered ; and the odor of nationality " rises -gratefully,

Cut and Paste History
Of the recent treatments of our founding fathers, this is by far the most unreadable.

Great reading here
I learned a lot about Monroe that I did not know before.It still amazes me how all our early great fathers were connected in some way---Washington, Adams(father and son), Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Hamilton, Jackson. I was particularly impressed my the author's accounts of Monroe's actions (as both secretary of state and acting secretary of war) in taking charge (personally) of militia men in defending Washington City.

Feels like a rush job, not much depth, loosely edited
I was really looking forward to this book. Monroe's presidency and the period around it were unfamiliar to me and I was looking forward to learning more about the man and his times. Plus Unger's bio of Lafayette is supposedly excellent.Unfortunately I was disappointed on a number of fronts.

First, I never really felt I got anything but the shallowest look into Monroe: I certainly know more than I did, but it's the level of knowledge I could have gotten from reading a resume and a chronological chart. When I think about the great bios of his contemporaries written by Isaacson (Ben Franklin), Chernow (Hamilton), and Meacham (Jackson), I got not only a much deeper understanding of the person. Granted, Isaacson and Chernow give themselves plenty of pages in their effort to write a definitive biography, but it doesn't have to be a question of length as Meacham's bio of Jackson demonstrates. It is about focusing on what matters and building on top of it and/or uncovering themes and following them along. Unger did neither with Monroe. In fairness, as he relates Monroe's correspondence with his wife was burned, but surely Unger could have spent time probing the correspondence with and about Monroe of others to help make up for this gap.

Second, good bios - particularly of leading political figures typically give a much better sense of the broader sweep of events and history going on at that time. Just as Unger seemed rushed in his portrait of Monroe, he skipped quickly over the big events and currents of his time. For example, the political environment during Monroe's time was exceptional - telling me that parties were essentially banished from the scene seems to deserve a bit more ink, perhaps at the expense of spending less time describing each town's particularly welcome to Monroe during his two tours of the nation. It would be sufficient to give an example of such a reception and then say how the scene was repeated and Monroe was exhausted on his return. Instead we get multiple, almost identical recounting of such receptions and a repeated mention of how they made Monroe tired. And how do you take us with Monroe to Revolutionary France and do nothing to bridge the dichotomy of their baggage being stolen on arrival with then being able to provide their children with an apparently private, elite schooling while in Revolutionary Paris? It is not that Unger is expected to tackle the French revolution in depth - or even American politics - but to ignore it seems too great an oversight.

Related to the example above relating to the deep dive into the receptions is a third fault that perhaps lies more with the editor than with Unger. A good editor would have called out needless repetition when a single anecdote would have sufficed to illustrate the larger point. Similarly, I got it the first time that Mrs. Monroe was attractive. Telling me nearly every time she appears on the scene that she is attractive - and with a quote no less - is excessive. And why tell me half a dozen times that Monroe and John Marshall were childhood buddies? Or to allow Unger to make the mistake of claiming Teddy Roosevelt was President during the Spanish American War?

This isn't the first presidential bio I've read that feels like it was rushed into print. There seems to be almost a race among authors and publishers to get biographies out the door (Robert Merry's bio of Polk is an example). But hopefully another author will make a better run at a Monroe biography.

Nicholle brought this book home from the library with the intent to read it herself. I picked it up off the stack and proceeded to read it. I had little interest in James Monroe until I visited and toured his estate Ash Lawn-Highland in Charlottesville, VA a few years ago. My interest was piqued less by his presidency than by his house and lifestyle.

This book fills in some of the gaps. My previous knowledge had been limited to: The Monroe Doctrine, His estate, and his actions at the Crossing of the Delaware and his actions and grievous wounding at the subsequent attack on Trenton by the Continental Army. Beyond that I knew little or nothing.

The book is a breezy, easy, quick read which surprised me considering the subject and the era. Monroe in philosophy and style stands in the middle of two great titans of the era, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Monroe like many of the founding generation remained in awe of Washington his entire life. Yet, he was a protégé of Jefferson and a very close friend. Monroe seemed politically more inclined in form to follow the examples of Washington then the Republican virtues of Jefferson.

The book offers great insight into the interpersonal relations and passions of the founding era. The free and easy exchange of assistance between these men was a revelation. Not just letters of introduction, advice, patronage etc but real money. Often friendships and support crossed political disputes. Politics was a passionate vocation, in many ways more so than today.

This book does pay homage to Monroe, his fellows, his life, and his legacy. The author has an affinity for Monroe and seeks to present his life and legacy in a positive manner. But the presentation is not hagiography, the author is critical especially near the end of Monroe's presidency. Too often modern writers adopt the jaded pundits habit of being hyper-critical at all stages. Monroe was an accomplished man who was deeply and widely involved in the founding of our nation. His accomplishments even when not as the main actor seem almost mythical when we look at current politicians. No other President of the US, except for possibly George H. W. Bush, had as long and as varied of a government career. Some times the depth and breadth of Monroe's accomplishments seem unreal in the modern context and critics using modernity as the mirror seek to find others.

Monroe's accomplishments and influence deserve more study and acknowledgement. He was the last of the founding fathers to be President, and he was the first true foreign policy President. This book is a good introduction to both the man and his presidency.

Good Not Great
"The Last Founding Father: James Monroe" was an intriguing read because Monroe is sometimes forgotten and serves as a crucial link between the Founding Fathers and the Jacksonian Era. However, the author does hero worship. Readers should skip the introduction because many of his statements like Monroe was the first good president after Washington and leaders like Adams, Jefferson, and Madison were simply caretakers is absurd ...
