Product Description
"A shocking document that reveals how the great reforms once promised by this landmark decision were systematically undermined."—Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the doctrine of "separate but equal" was unconstitutional. Charles J. Ogletree, Jr., was not even two at the time, and his family, farm workers in southern California, had scant knowledge of how keenly the ruling would affect them. In All Deliberate Speed Ogletree examines the personal ramifications of the decision for him and his family—his childhood in the wake of the Brown decision, his student days at Stanford and Harvard Law, his immersion in the Boston busing crisis—and its meaning for all Americans. Presenting a vivid pageant of historical characters including Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King, Jr., Earl Warren, Anita Hill, and Clarence Thomas, Ogletree discusses the ambivalence of our judicial system, the increasing legal challenges to affirmative action, and the issue of reparations. Informed throughout by brilliant legal insight, All Deliberate Speed compellingly traces the history of race and integration in American society, and will promote intense debate and reconsideration. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Professor Ogletree Puts You There
Professor Ogletree has been part of or witnessed some of the greatest moments in the struggle. This book puts you in the moment and gives an incredibly personal and up-close account of the events.Riveting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
This is great book. It gives the real story behind brown vs the board of education. Also, it gives a lot of history relating to the struggles of black people in the last 100 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Bearing Witness to the Truth" -- All Deliberate Speed
All Deliberate Speed bears witness to the truth about our two party education system. This book should be on the required reading list for all students in both high school and college. It is a must read for law students who take, or contemplate taking constitutional law courses or anyone who truly wants to understand the impact of Brown v. Board of Education.

All Deliberate Speed speaks the truth. In some chapters the author gives you hope and in other chapters, the author allows the reader to ponder the future. Reading and understanding this book should help eliminate un-substantiated bias against integration. However, there is no question that the author points out the damage racial segregation, housed and surrounded by inequality, does to our society.

For example, in chapter six, Ogletree clearly exposes the reader to the fact that our government denied African-Americans full citizenship rights through legislation, judicial decisions as well as Jim Crow customs and behaviors.

Was the denial of full citizenship rights (education, accommodations, housing, voting) for African-Americans a grant of"affirmative action" for the white majority? Does the phrase "all deliberate speed" give or take away from the impact or the seriousness of the Brown decisions? Ogletree addresses these question and others in his 'adept' analysis of the decisions in Brown v. Board I and in Brown v. Board II.

Ogletree masterfully points out that a proper education includes, but is not limited to ethnic diversity, safe buildings, good teacher pay, desks, books, parental involvement, technology, etc. A proper education for all supports ones ability to successfully integrate oneself into our society and is germane to our survival as a nation. All Deliberate Speed is an excellent, excellent book. Easy to read, easy to understand, provocative, educational and truthful. Separate but equal is inherently un-equal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting!
As a first gerneration recipient of the benefits of Brown v Board of Education, it was enlightning to get a up-close view of the behind the scene goings-on of the attempts to stall and erode the promise of "Brown".This is a must read for the public..... to be aware of the diabolical machinations that go on in the back rooms of power to attempt to deny the basic and fundamental right to a good education.

Professor Ogletree illustrates that the promise of"Brown" remains unfulfilled and that we cannot stop fighting the resistance to that promise. ... Read more

Product Description
MSU is trying to discard its engineering school identity and become as well-rounded as its students. Within the next couple of years a humanities institute should be built, modeled loosely after Stanford s humanities institute. The University will still cling to its title of research school, however. In recent years, it has come under fire for this reputation. Other schools across the nation reportedly snicker when someone gets a research grant at MSU it is not the most difficult thing to do.Going to school at Montana State University will always have its ups and downs. When making the decision whether or not to go there, remember that it will probably never be the perfect school. But then again, what school is? MSU can offer its students a strong education, as long as they are willing to make the same effort the professors are. MSU can offer the perfect setting for outdoor sports. MSU can also let students fail classes, spend all their time on the ski hill, and waste away a few thousand a year. Whatever you put into the school is what you will get out of it. Hopefully, this book will help you decide if making the extra effort is worth it for you.Erica Aytes, Author ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good for small group studies!
My chapter of the Daughters of the King did this as a 6-month study (we meet once a month and did a chapter each month). A different person led each lesson.

We found it to be very easy and very rewarding. It is notvery time-consuming, but it really does get you thinking about God's willfor your life, and it generates some great discussion among thegroup.

Some of the Just for Fun activities are kindof cheesy, likeplaying hide and seek and dancing around the room. But we skipped the oneswe weren't comfortable with.

Other sections, such as Quiet Reflection,Knowing God's Heart, and Making It Real in Your Own Life, were awesome.Great tools to make the material sink in! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great service!
I received my product in a very timely manner, and it was exactly how it was described. Thanks for the great service!

5-0 out of 5 stars Educators and Librabians continue to be intolerant
To say that there is a "major role" for children's storybooks, is too narrow and limited. No one has the right to decide what the main focus of children's literature should be. Literature is an art form, and it's content should not be dictated by one group.
In my 25 years of raising children, I have seen this contention between the "professionals" and parents (the real professionals). The picture books that teach moral lessons seem to receive awards for parents groups and harsh criticism from educators. In this case, many educators and librarians feel that moral messages have no place in children's picture books. But isn't this stance a classic example of what preachy and didactic is? "This is what we feel is right for children's books - our way or the highway." Some of the reviews of children's books who choose to take the path of moralizing or teaching values have ranged from unkind to bordering hostile. How can educators teach children tolerance towards those of a different opinion, if they can't master the quality themselves?
Children's books, like the whole of education, has to do more than amuse. Children need certain lessons to prepare them for life. Books that are artistic and entertaining have value, as do books that instruct, and teach moral lessons. Parents have the right to choose from a variety of books for their kids. Apples, oranges and pears - there's room in the fridge for all three.

4-0 out of 5 stars Issues of Character in Today's Society
Americans take pride in their moral heritage; however, America has seen a drift from its core values and a resultant moral decline. In "Character Under Attack & What You Can Do about It" Carl Sommer examines the spirit of America's founding fathers in light of the current climate of violent crime, prison population, and the philosophical battle, and cultural war being raged in our country today.

Sommer attributes this crisis to the fact that character is under attack in our nation. He concludes that this erosion of values has serious implications for both our schools and society. Sommer quotes from scholars, philosophers, educators, politicians, and theologians as he presents his case for a return to character education programs and traditional values in our schools.

The final chapter contains practical helpful "Actions to Promote Educational Success."Sommer discusses four keys to successful schools. He highlights four model schools that are making a difference, and offers "Action Steps" for educators, parents, and concerned citizens to affect positive results.

Sommer writes out of a genuine concern for the direction American education is taking. He is articulate in communicating these issues and speaks for millions of concerned Americans.

"Character Under Attack" is thoroughly researched and well documented.
This is an important and timely book and should be in the hands of every concerned parent, school administrators, librarians, and our elected officials.

4-0 out of 5 stars Challange
This is a small but powerful book. It challenges us to look at society in a different way and to rise up and do something about it. We need to return to the values that this great country was based on. I also believe that we have fallen away from the morals this nation was founded on.

When do we actually change? Only when we have our backs against the wall and we have to do something. This book puts us against the wall so we have to look at our lives. Not everyone enjoys being challenged. But the only way we usually do something is when we are challenged.

1-0 out of 5 stars Strange little book....
Carl Sommers claims that the cure for the deplorable moral decay of kids today is to teach them NOT to make their own moral judgements, NOT to question their own cultural values, and NOT to be tolerant of differing cultures/value systems. He claims that teaching kids 'too much' tolerance is teaching them not to condemn such evils as slavery. And yet he does not explain how slavery could have been eliminated from our own culture without people who questioned their own cultural values. Questioning cultural values is how we improve society. Without questioning, we stagnate as people and as a culture.

I can't say that brainwashing kids to believe exactly as they are told can be seen as building character--quite the opposite. ... Read more

Product Description
In order to compete in the modern world, any society today must rank education in science, mathematics, and technology as one of its highest priorities. It's a sad but true fact, however, that most Americans are not scientifically literate.International studies of educational performance reveal that U.S. students consistently rank near the bottom in science and mathematics. The latest study of the National Assessment of Educational Progress has found that despite some small gains recently, the average performance of seventeen-year-olds in 1986 remained substantially lower than it had been in 1969.As the world approaches the twenty-first century, American schools--when it comes to the advancement of scientific knowledge--seem to be stuck in the Victorian age.

In Science for All Americans, F. James Rutherford and Andrew Ahlgren brilliantly tackle this devastating problem.Based on Project 2061, a scientific literacy initiative sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, this wide-ranging, important volume explores what constitutes scientific literacy in a modern society; the knowledge, skills, and attitudes all students should acquire from their total school experience from kindergarten through high school; and what steps this country must take to begin reforming its system of education in science, mathematics, and technology.

Science for All Americans describes the scientifically literate person as one who knows that science, mathematics, and technology are interdependent enterprises with strengths and limitations; who understands key concepts and principles of science; who recognizes both the diversity and unity of the natural world; and who uses scientific knowledge and scientific ways of thinking for personal and social purposes. Its recommendations for educational reform downplay traditional subject categories and instead highlight the connections between them.It also emphasizes ideas and thinking skills over the memorization of specialized vocabulary. For instance, basic scientific literacy means knowing that the chief function of living cells is assembling protein molecules according to the instructions coded in DNA molecules, but does not mean necessarily knowing the terms "ribosome" or "deoxyribonucleic acid."

Science, mathematics, and technology will be at the center of the radical changes in the nature of human existence that will occur during the next life span; therefore, preparing today's children for tomorrow's world must entail a solid education in these areas.Science for All Americans will help pave the way for the necessary reforms in America's schools. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but there are better...
This is a good overview of what Project 2061 is all about, but I think there are better resources."Science for All Americans" is a bit dry.I would recommend "Science Matters" for a more interesting overview of what Americans should know about science.

1-0 out of 5 stars I never got the book
It took more than three weeks when I finally received an email letting me know that they never sent the book, and that they were not charging it to my account. there were no more explanations.

4-0 out of 5 stars The beginning book in Science reform for literacy.
We have now entered a second time of deep concern for the science, math, and technological education for everyone. The first one occurred after the Sputnik fiasco, when the Russians beat us in the race to reach space. Theconcern now has risen due to what science groups such as the AmericanAssociation for the Advancement of Science, and educators saw in comparisonof assessments made of students in the U.S. and those in other developedcountries, such as Japan. The answer to this concern was for the AAAS alongwith other groups to put out a guideline as to what constitutes scientificliteracy, and what the public in the U.S. should at least know to bescientifically literate. As usual, though the AAAS addressed the fact thatcertain groups in the U.S. were not being 'included' in the pursuit ofscience literacy, such as women and racial minorities, in this their firstbook they skipped over those of us with disabilities. Since this is a majorconcern of mine and the area in which I do research, I was appalled to seethey neglected 'us' once again, especially as the AAAS has a separatedepartment dealing with the Disabled/Deaf.In spite of this mistake, thewriting of this book has laid the groundwork for universities and collegesas to what the teachers they train should know and be able to teach so thatour country can be more scientifically literate. With new information beingmade available through newspapers and the Internet on a daily basis, it isabsolutely imperative that all adults regardless of race, gender, orability be able to glean the information they need from this outpouring ofinformation to make decisions requiring informed consent in health care, decisions on employment (since health care is one of the top employers inthe U.S. today), and to teach their children. This book was the beginning, but it isn't the end. More books have further elucidated what is requiredfor science literacy from both the AAAS and other science groups. This isthe place to start if you are an educator of any kind who wants theirstudents to become scientifically literate. Karen Sadler, ScienceEducation, University of Pittsburgh, klsst23@pitt.edu

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of science for nonscientists
"Science for All Americans" will appeal to two audiences: people who want to know something about science and science teachers. Written under the guidance of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the text describes what the average citizen or student needs toknow to be reasonably scientifically literate. Science literacy is notknowing pages of facts, theories or equations. The book's organizationhelps define the basic components of science literacy. Chapters 1-3describe what science is about. This includes defining the activity calledscience, introducing the language of science--mathematics, and the tools ofscience--technology. Chapters 4-9 present the fundamental base ofscientific knowledge. The topics include: physical science (the universe, forces, motion), biological science (heridity, the cell, evolution), humans(the human organism, human society, technology), and mathematics. Theinformation presented in these chapters is extremely well written in both anontechnical and nonthreatening manner. If you've feared science or haveforgotten all the science you have ever learned, you will still be able toenjoy and remember a surprising amount of the material presented. Chapter10 summarizes the most fundamental discoveries of science. Finally, chapters 11-12 delve into the mind of a scientist. What patterns do we seein the world? And what type of mental habits should a scientist exhibit? The final 3 chapters of the book are on science teaching and reformingscience education and so are of interest primarily to science teachers. Thebook achieves its aim of both defining science literacy and making thereader scientifically literate. In fact, the book does so well that I useit as the primary textbook in my college science class as part of theliberal arts education for nonscience majors. Speaking as a collegeinstructor who spends most of my time teaching science to nonscientists, Iemphasize again the organization, structure and writing of this book. Notonly will you learn much from this book, you will develop a basis on whichto increase your science literacy in the future. Science and technology areadvancing rapidly--too rapidly for any one person to stay current in evenone discipline. Yet citizens must make choices. This book will aid you inmaking informed choices when dealing with science and technology issues. AsI try to explain to my students, it is not wrong to be feel discomfort atnot knowing everything--no one does. The real error is to remain where youare now in your science literacy and not grow. This book will help yougrow. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars With tautological criticism like this, subjects exist only to confirm a theory.
I haven't read this book, and after reading the Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Review comments above, I probably never will. I've never seen such negative, dismissive, and vicious reviews for any other book advertised on Amazon.com...It's hard to believe the book sells any copies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bizarre subway ride through the underbelly of culture.
Although suffering from paragraphs that are simply too long and an invisible bibliography, Shaviro's work is a wonderful read, albeit dense. A reading of Grant Morrison's "Doom Patrol" is highly recommended as each of the chapters in Shaviro's work draws from Morrison's complex superhero saga; cursory knowledge of some of the other sources may help too, as they are numerous and vital to understanding how gross Shaviro's effort truly is. Worth reading, if only for the discussions on language (memes showing their ugly face again), identity, the information age and perversity. Conspicuously absent are Frank Zappa, Pee Wee Herman and Greg Egan. But then one needs material for a sequel.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best single-volume study of postmodernism
The main virtue of Steven Shaviro's book is that it exemplifies what it discusses. Rather than sit back and presume to parse the postmodern world from the standpoint of a sort of objective, third-person narrator (in themold of a Mailer, Bellow, or Kirkus) who remains ultimately"disinterested" in his subject matter, Shaviro dives in and swimswith the strange fish populating his _Patrols_. How could one write aboutpostmodernism without referring to postmodernists? Shaviro does so withperfect synthesis, and discusses relevant issues with poetic prose thatbecomes its own complex, ambiguous, challenging artifact. Look no furtherthan _Doom Patrols_ for incisive chapters on race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, class, money--and all the other topics the high modernists wouldhave us forget in the name of Kultur. ... Product Description
In (First Person)2, Day and Eodice offer one of the few book-length studies of co-authoring in academic fields since Lunsford and Ede published theirs over a decade ago. The central research here involves in-depth interviews with ten successful academic collaborators from a range of disciplines and settings. The interviews explore the narratives of these informants' experience-what brought them to collaborate, what cognitive and logistical processes were involved as they worked together, what is the status of collaborated work in their field, and so on-and situate these informants within the broader discussion of collaboration theory and research as it has been articulated over the last ten years.

As the study develops, Day and Eodice become most interested in the affective domain of co-authorship, and they find the most promising explorations of that domain in the work of feminist theorists in composition. Against a background of feminist theory, the reflections of these informants and authors not only provide a window into the processes of current scholarship in writing, but also come to stand as a critique of traditional practice in English departments. Throughout the book, the two co-authors interrupt themselves with reflections of their own, on the rejection long ago of their proposal to co-author a dissertation, on their presuppositions about their research, on their developing commitment to the framework of feminist theory to account for their findings, and on their own processes and challenges in writing this book. The result is a well-centered volume that is disciplined and restrained in its presentation of research, but which is layered and multivocal in presentation, and which ends with some provocative conclusions.

A rewarding and challenging read, (First Person) 2 will be much in request by composition scholars for use in their own research, in their teaching, and with their graduate students. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The Author is a Moron
Some of the author's "tips" were amazingly ludicrous, such as tip #329:Get a sex change operation (this is not a joke).Mr. Pond suggests that undergoing a sex change operation is a viable way to account for an allowable medical expense in order to save on income tax.Or how about tip #431:Fall in love with someone who is rich or affluent.Or maybe tip #434:Always use a condom. And how about tip #447:Never take financial responsibility for anything that eats.Clearly the author, Mr. Jonathan Pond, is a complete idiot, because he could have trimmed down the 1001 tips to one - that being the best way to save money in this miserable life is to end it.He appears to hate life, a sentiment easily grasped by the reader based on his so-called tips.I am very glad I bought this used and for less than a dollar.I will donate it to my fireplace in the coming winter, in order to save on heating expenses. That is tip #1002 and I give it to you free of charge.

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money
These are just regurgitated obvious hints, most of which are impractical or not even feasable.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is very misleading
Generally speaking, some tips here work, some not so much, whilst others are good for a laugh.

The only situation where I found this book can be useful is when you have debt up to your a#s and need to pay it off fast. Then this book will be a good book for you to read.Reason: any money you can put toward debt reduction represents 100% risk free and tax free return on your investment (much like a strip bond). This could include mortgage debt as well.

In the real world this book is less than practical. For example, the book recommends invest your spare cash at a mutual fund. This is where you could get killed if you just blindly throw money at your fund without knowing what you are doing. How would you feel if you cut off the cap of your tooth paste to save a couple of penies, then at the end of a month finds out that you just lost 5% of your net worth in your mutual fund ??If you are like most people I know, you might say something like this: well, I haven't lost any money because I have not sold, then a month later, you find out you lost another 3% ??Say if I tell you we are going into a bear market, do you have the courage to short the market ?? how much are you willing to risk in your investment ??What about giving to your local charities ?? THESE ARE THE REALITIES, folks, not how many pennies you can saved.Get used to it.The fact is, a skillful investor and / or trader can make the money 10 times more, much more so than the technics presented in this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
I don't usually spend my time writing reviews, but after purchasing this book from a thrift store, I had to warn others.
I am always looking for books to teach me more ways to be frugal.I thought that with 1001 tips, there may be something for me to use.

Yikes.I couldn't even read the whole thing. When I read Marry someone rich, and Use your vacuum bags three times, I gave up.

While this may help people who never heard of the term frugal, for others who naturally practice frugality, the book is a waste of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Someone who Really wants to start Saving
I was just telling a co-worker about a book I read in 1992 that changed my life and was the beggining of my wealth building story, and I went on Amazon for kicks to see if it was still listed, and here it is...1001 Ways to Cut Expenses". I am writing some 14 years later to let you know that as a 27 year old who had worked3 years in NYC and living on negative cash flow versus my salary ($29k at the time out of college and about $50,000 at the time I read this bok), I decided it was time to start saving money. To say the book resonated with me is an understatement. I made it a huge game and really took it to the next level. In the following year, I saved alot. In the second year, I saved 80% of my income! I am writing because after reading many of the reviews, I see people find the tips not helpful, or unrealistic. Well...I did buy in bulk, and I did re-use my trash bags, and I re-soled shoes instead of buying new ones, and I kept my thormastat at the right level...etc....etc...etc. My favorite tip was cut open your toothpaste tube. You know, you can get almost an extra month worth of toothpaste that way? Sounds small I know, but you will save thousands per year but incorporating these practices. I put $1000 into a mutual fund, and began adding $15 per paycheck. I increased it with every pay raise, or each time I cut expenses. Four years later my $1000 had grown to $15,000!! It made me realize that systematic saving had more to do with building wealth than income or investing. The philosophy of this book became the cornerstone of my frugality. I have an incredible lifestyle now!I have an 8 figure Investment account, and never need to work again. You are correct is probably guessing that I earned a ton of money working...I did! I work hard, make alot of money...and save most of it! This year I have 40% of my pay automatically directed to savings vehichles like 401k and deffered comp plan. I would recomend this book to anyone who needs or wants to start saving money. You can bet your last dollar that those who gave negative reviews either make a big income, and just dont care about wasting money...or dont have a dime in the bank and just can't bare to go without their $4 latte or $130 per month cable bill with all the premium shows they NEVER watch! You can bet their are NOT multi millionaires!!! I plan to give this book to my children when they get out of college! Oh...and I still cut my toothpaste tube open! ... Read more
