Extractions: Gender Culture Today, gender is recognised as an intrinsic part of any social structure and is sometimes impossible to differentiate from the overall cultural context. Although the term refers to the dictionary definition of sex and often signifies the sexual identity of an individual, even laymen now realise that the concept of gender is not confined to sexual identity alone. It refers to the assessment and analysis of the social status of men and women and, unlike the biological definition, gender comprises socio-historical and ethno-cultural factors. Contemporary social science distinguishes between three dimensions of gender: individual, structural (represented by the institutions in society) and cultural (expressed in the cultural definition of masculinity and femininity). Every society has unique and deeply rooted preconceptions which regulate the behavioural stereotypes of men and women and shape specific perceptions of masculinity and femininity, thus developing gender patterns characteristic of the given culture. These patterns are not universal for different geographical locations, races, and groups, but are unique and result from the past experiences of the given nation, its mentality, history, religion, geographic location, traditions, ethno-psychology and level of civilisation - i.e. by the overall culture of the society. This explains why gender culture is so diverse and the behavioural patterns of men and women, so different.

By the late nineteenth century the Rockefellers, Rothschilds and Nobles had all made fortunes here. Azerbaijan was incorporated into the Russian Empire in the early nineteenth century. Briefly independent from 1918, it was invaded again in 1920 and became the Soviet republic of Transcaucasia. In 1992, following the break-up of the Soviet Union and in the euphoria of new democracy, former communist leader Heydar Aliev was replaced by the pro-Turk Abulsaz Elchibey, who attempted to lead the country towards closer connections with the West. Soaring inflation and war with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabagh swiftly led to disillusion. By 1993 Aliev was again in power and guiding the country back into a close relationship with Russia. Russia's objective was to extract wealth from the area, not to build the economic infrastructure of the country, and the economy stagnated. Towards the end of the century, tsarist leaders began a program of assimilation ("Russification"). The Azerbaijanis for the most part reacted with passive resistance. Following the 1905 Bloody Sunday massacre in St. Petersburg, however, riots erupted in Baku and spread throughout Transcaucasia. Riots continued through 1906 in what has been called the "Tatar-Armenian War", leaving resentments and hostilities that still endure. Towards the end of World War 1, Persia tried to reunify Azerbaijan by taking control over Northern Azerbaijan, but failed. Britain and the Ottoman enpire also at times occupied parts of the area. There was also a brief attempt at Azerbaijani independence (1918 - the Arak republic), before Northern Azerbaijan was incorporated into the Soviet state in 1920, and the Azerbaijan SSR was formed. Then, in 1922, the Transcaucasian Federation was established, uniting Azerbaijan with Georgia and Armenia. In 1923, the Nakhichevan region on the border with Iran was made an autonomous republic, and the year after, the Armenian enclave Nagorno-Karabakh was made an autonomous oblast within Azerbaijan. This gave Stalin a better opportunity to control the area by "divide-and-rule", but it has deeply embittered the relationship between Azerbaijanis and Armenians. The Transcaucasian Federation lasted until 1936, when Stalin reestablished the three separate union republics.

Extractions: By Onnik Krikorian The Armenian Relief Society (ARS) is an NGO on the roster in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. The ARS was founded in 1910 in New York City as an independent, non-governmental, and non-sectarian grassroots organization, serving the humanitarian needs of the Armenian people everywhere, and seeking to preserve the cultural heritage and identity of the Armenian nation. The ARS was allowed to become active in Soviet Armenia after the devastating earthquake in 1988. Maro Minassian was elected Chairperson of the ARS Central Executive Board in 1998. This interview was conducted on December 16, 2001 at the ARS office in central Yerevan before Minassian was due to return to the United States after visiting ARS projects in Armenia and Nagorno Karabagh. Onnik Krikorian: Maro Minassian: OK: What are the current priorities in Armenia? MM: OK: The ARS has just issued a Winter Appeal [see December 8, 2001 issue of the Armenian Weekly] after statistics were released showing that 14,000 children from vulnerable families do not attend school and in particular during the winter. In the area of education, is that purely your concern? MM: We have health care programs and the orphan sponsorship but education is a concern for us and we have scholarship programs here and in Karabagh. Just before I left for Armenia we received this report and we immediately issued an appeal. I have already heard that winter clothing and monetary assistance will be arriving [in Armenia] soon.

Extractions: Historic Visit is Cause for New Understanding of Armenian By Archbishop Hovnan Derderian Executive Secretary of the Ecclesiastical Committee of Holy Etchmiadzin's 1700th Anniversary Celebrations Pope John Paul II's visit to Armenia in the shadow of the magnificent biblical Mount Ararat was not only full of symbolism but has opened new chapter of history in the relations between Christian churches. Looking at the jubilant crowds that gathered to welcome the Roman Catholic pontiff in the streets of Yerevan, Armenia's capital, an outside observer would hardly know that John Paul II, who came to participate in the celebrations of the 1700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity in Armenia, was visiting an Orthodox stronghold and not a Catholic country. This was especially remarkable because, in the past, the two churches have clashed on many doctrinal issues. Throughout the Middle Ages, especially during the Crusades, the Armenian Church fought off several attempts at "Latinization." At the same time, the Armenian Church in the Armenian kingdom of Cilicia played a critical role in facilitating cultural and scientific exchanges between the East and the West.

Extractions: Armenia's entry into the new Millennium is signified by highly remarkable events, which attest to its rich history. This year we mark the tenth anniversary of Armenia's re-established independence. Having embraced firmly the values of freedom and democracy, we committed ourselves to tranforming our society to this end. We are also celebrating one of the most important milestones in Armenia's history, the seventeen hundredth anniversary of the adoption of Christianity as a state religion. It is the celebration of persistence in our beliefs and our values. They have survived the tests and turbulence of history. The past ten years were also the time for rediscovering Armenia's identity. With its rich historical and cultural heritage the Armenian nation has always considered itself part of the European civilisation. Soon after having gained independence we declared our objective to engage Armenia firmly in the architecture of the new Europe. It is indeed symbolic that at the beginning of the new Millennium, in the year so meaningful for our nation, we are here today to celebrate Armenia's accession to the Council of Europe. This is an impressive illustration of the link between Armenia's past, present and the future.

Extractions: TINY NATION with the distinction of being the "cradle of civilization," Armenia is bursting with historical magnificence. It is on Mt. Ararat, located in the Armenian Highland, where Noah's Ark came safe to land. This spot is considered to be the point of rebirth of life on earth when Noah descents from upon the Holy Mt. Ararat and down into the Araratian Valley of Armenia. The "Landing-Place" is "the eternal symbol of the continuum of the undying tenacity and vigor" of the Armenian Nation. Calling themselves "Hais," the Armenians claim they are descendents of Haik -the great grandson of Japeth, the son of Noah, and the legendary father of the Armenians who settled on what was later to be known as the home of the Armenians (circa 1200 B.C.). One of the world's oldest civilizations, Armenians are the contemporaries of the Babylonians, the Hittite, and a host of other ancient races, all of which have become extinct except for the Armenians. The name "Armenia" first appears in recorded history in Assyrian inscriptions of the 9th Century B.C. and ancient Armenian tribes are believed to have first appeared on the territory of the Armenian Plateau 3,000 to 4,000 years before Christ. At the beginning of the second century BC, a united Armenian kingdom was established. Its first king was Artashes I (189-160 B.C.). Tigran II the Great (95-55 B.C.) and the other sovereigns who succeeded to the throne after him were quite successful for some time in resisting Rome's eastward aggression and under these various kings and princes

Extractions: The mountainous region known as Karabagh (Gharabagh) has always been an integral part of the Armenian nation and identity. The region was referred to as Artsakh as far back as the 3rd Century BC, when Armenians already lived and prospered there. About 500 years ago, the word Karabagh, supposedly Turkish for "Black Garden", became synonimous with Artsakh. Karabagh was annexed to Soviet Azerbaijan in the 1920s by Stalin, who abhorred Armenians and Armenia, supposedly because he was the illegitimate child of an Armenian businessman, who he never knew. Armenians in Karabagh faced innumerable atrocities and persecution under Azerbaijani rule, and when in 1988, the Soviet Union had already initiated its policies of Perestroika and Glasnost, Armenians began pushing for the return of Karabagh to Armenia. War broke out and the Nagorno-Karabagh Republic declared its independence from the oppressive government of Azerbaijan. Armenian forces in Karabagh were greatly out-numbered by a wealthier and bigger Azerbaijany military. However, the Azerbaijanis could not match the heart and commitment of the Karabagh Armenians, who knew what they were fighting for and would not allow their children and nation to be ruled by a racially-bias and dictatorial Azerbaijan. By 1994, Karabagh was liberated by Armenian forces and a cease-fire was signed. After over 70 years of oppression, Armenians were finally free to openly follow their Christian faith, learn their culture, speak their language, and live in a democratic country.

The Office Of The Nagorno Karabakh Republic In USA WASHINGTON, DC Representative of the nagorno karabagh Republic (NKR) in the UnitedStates Vardan Barseghian told Harvard University students last week that http://www.nkrusa.org/press_releases/december_17_2001.html
Extractions: December 17, 2001 On December 12, speaking to a negotiations class at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government (KSG) in Cambridge, MA, Representative Barseghian said: "The cease-fire accord was only made possible because all parties to the conflict were present at the negotiating table and were willing to accept their part of the responsibility for its implementation. This is the only formula that can work and bring realistic agreements". "Nagorno Karabagh has been effectively independent for 10 years and I think it is important that we speak for ourselves not only with different governments, but also with academic and research institutions. We have welcomed this opportunity to appear before the Harvard community," Barseghian said. The briefing was an open event and interested students and faculty from Harvard University and Tufts University's School of Law and Diplomacy attended.
