Buy a Testing Kit Clean Water More than 30 years ago, the United States faced an enormous environmental crisis. At the time, Americans were pumping leaded gas into massive automobiles. Smoke and sludge seeped into our air, groundwater, and soil from industrial sources. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity, as people were unaware of how harmful it was. Some of the worst threats were apparent in our nation's rivers, lakes, oceans, and harbors. Lake Erie was declared dead, oil spills on both coasts posed threats to marine wildlife and human health, and the Boston Harbor seemed more like a cesspool than a waterway. Public outrage at such environmental disasters, empowered by the first Earth Day in 1970, achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting bipartisan support for the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts. The 1972 Federal Water Pollution Control Act, commonly known as the Clean Water Act, seeks to "restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the nation's water." Consequently, states adopted uniform minimum water quality standards, monitored by the newly-created EPA. Today, reduced toxic flows have lowered fish kills allowing lakes and rivers to revive. Municipal wastewater treatment plants, supported by billions of dollars in federal investments currently serve almost 190 million people, 50 million more than in the late 1960s.

Each year, several million American adults suffer injury or property damage due to natural disasters (1). In several large household probability samples we (together with colleagues) have found that approximately one-third of adults report exposure to a natural disaster during their life span (2,3). In addition, recent events confirm the potential impact of various natural disasters (e.g., the Great Midwest floods of '93; the Southern California fires of '93, Hurricanes Andrew '92, Iniki '92, and Hugo '89; the Oakland Hills fire '91, and the Loma Prieta earthquake '89). Our personal and professional backgrounds provide us with insights concerning the mental health impact of natural disasters. On a personal level, we both lived in Charleston, South Carolina in September, 1989 when Hurricane Hugo devastated the area. We understand first hand what it is like to prepare for, survive, and clean up following a major natural disaster. On a professional level, we are part of a clinical research team that specializes in studying the mental health impact of various natural disasters. We have received National Institute of Mental Health funding to study the following events: Hurricane Hugo (September, 1989), the Loma Prieta earthquake (October, 1989), the Sierra Madre earthquake (June, 1991), and Hurricane Andrew (August, 1992). Our comments reflect a synthesis of out personal insights and research findings.

Extractions: Member posted 08-14-2002 11:01 AM The article linked on the JSHP was interesting. Most interesting was the description of how a medical examiner makes the determination that heat is the cause of death. The article describes it thus: quote: For each heat-related death, he said, the medical examiner must confirm one of three factors: a body temperature of 105 degrees or more, a high environmental temperature at the death scene, or decomposition in a body seen alive just before the heat wave. The high body temperature makes sense if it assessed at or near the time of death but not any significant time thereafter. The other factors don't really seem to make any sense at all and appears to be mere speculation. Anyway, another matter of interest was what the reporter failed to mention, and something to which the JSHP hinted at in the commentary below the link: The much high incidence of cold-related deaths. I wanted to ask the reporter but couldnt find the email addy so I wrote the science editor instead.

For example, a recent storm in the Philippines wreaked havoc on a small fishing village. Twelve fisherman were killed and all the village's boats were lost. UMCOR is helping the remaining villagers recover. For just $3,000 they can purchase a boat and begin again. With International Disaster Response funds, UMCOR can respond to small-scale disasters with assistance that makes a big difference in the lives of those struggling to recover.

It is an interdisciplinary, but essentially psychological synthesis of those theoretical and research streams variously labelled ecological psychology, human ecology, environmental perception/cognition, proxemics and behavioural design and it borrows substantially from human biology, human geography, spatial and urban anthropology and the design professions. Subject areas covered include a brief evolutionary perspective, physical environmental factors (such as temperature, information load, periodicity and pollution), personal space and territoriality, human isolation and crowding, human factors research, stress, natural disasters perception and response, environmental design, vernacular architecture and cross-cultural comparisons, urban settings, environmental impact assessment and evolution and general theoretical and methodological considerations.

Ideally, when a failure occurs, it is best to recover your data using an effective backup and recovery strategy. This backup and recovery strategy should be fully designed, tested, and implemented to fit your organization's business needs. Backup and recovery procedures are outlined in the product documentation, and there is also a technical document on the Sybase Web site entitled "What Backup, Recovery, and Disaster Recovery Mean to Your Adaptive Server Anywhere Databases," which discusses how to develop a database backup and recovery strategy. Existential Risks: Analyzing Human Extinction Scenarios To meet the psychological needs of victims following Presidentallydeclared disasters, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provides funding for crisis counseling, training, and public information and education services through provisions http://www.nickbostrom.com/existential/risks.html
Extractions: Existential Risks Analyzing Human Extinction Scenarios and Related Hazards ABSTRACT Because of accelerating technological progress, humankind may be rapidly approaching a critical phase in its career. In addition to well-known threats such as nuclear holocaust, the prospects of radically transforming technologies like nanotech systems and machine intelligence present us with unprecedented opportunities and risks. Our future, and whether we will have a future at all, may well be determined by how we deal with these challenges. In the case of radically transforming technologies, a better understanding of the transition dynamics from a human to a posthuman society is needed. Of particular importance is to know where the pitfalls are: the ways in which things could go terminally wrong. While we have had long exposure to various personal, local, and endurable global hazards, this paper analyzes a recently emerging category: that of existential risks . These are threats that could cause our extinction or destroy the potential of Earth-originating intelligent life. Some of these threats are relatively well known while others, including some of the gravest, have gone almost unrecognized. Existential risks have a cluster of features that make ordinary risk management ineffective. A final section of this paper discusses several ethical and policy implications. A clearer understanding of the threat picture will enable us to formulate better strategies.

This workbook takes the Lovre Model of intervention and makes it available to youth who are working with counselors who do not have expertise in trauma. The youth draw the continuum of life prior to the event through the event and on into life after some level of adjustment. Effort is made for youth to become aware of how their body is holding the traumatic memory and the residual physical stress. The last few pages of the book include the visualization exercise that allows the child to begin to manage the symptoms and contain "the story".
