Extractions: *The CHAD Website is sponsored by Around Christmas of 1999, Rachel Salerno (pictured at right) developed a cough that wouldn't go away. Early in January, her parents took her to the doctor with symptoms of coughing, tiredness and paleness. The doctor agreed Rachel looked very ill. A chest x-ray revealed any parent's worst nightmare. There was a large mass in Rachel's chest that had completely collapsed her left lung, building fluid around her heart and distoring the shape of her trachea. A full body scan revealed Rachel's kidney's were enlarged as well. Rachel's family was devastated beyond words. The next day, a biopsy of the chest mass and a bone marrow test were to be performed. In the middle of surgery, the doctor came out with "good news". There were leukemia cells detected in Rachel's bone marrow. This was "good news" because Rachel was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL), not the solid tumor cancer they feared she had. ALL is the most common form of childhood cancer, with survival rates of 80 percent for children in Rachel's age group. Rachel immediately started a two-year chemotherapy protocol, and although she was very sick for the first month, her body was in complete remission within 28 days. The masses were completely gone, and there were no other leukemia cells detected in her body. Her family considered this a modern day miracle.
