    Extractions: History History of Taylor Joseph Rusho founded Taylor in 1883. It was founded on the homestead of Melissa Murray. Now Taylor is the only town in Loup County. Many people that go to school in Taylor have parents or grandparents that also went to school here. Our school is very historic. Joseph Rusho was the first person to settle here Taylor with his family. The family included his wife Josephine, and son Treffly Olive. They came to visit Joseph's brother Frank in Fort Hartsuff in Valley County and there they had their second son Robert. In the spring of 1877, they decided to move up stream and settled here in the present day site of Taylor. They had several more children including, George, Eugene, Joseph, Emory, Myrtle, and Maude. Joseph was known as the "Father of Taylor." He was the leader of Loup County politics and civics for thirty years. Joseph also owned a lumberyard. Taylor was named after Edward H. Taylor and his wife Elizabeth O'Bryan. They came and settled in Kent just east of Taylor in 1876. They where friends of the Rushos.

Adopt-an-Acre A History of Audubon in Nebraska 1913 - The National Association of Audubon Societies partners with the City of Valentine to construct the bison enclosure at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge. In the early part of the century Audubon was instrumental in bison preservation due to the efforts of its vice-president who was also president of the American Bison Society. 1970 - Ron Klataske, Audubon's young regional vice-president from Kansas, holds the first Spring River Conference in Grand Island. The conference would soon move to Kearney and eventually be renamed the Rivers and Wildlife Celebration. It has played a major role in educating Nebraskans and others about the value of the Platte River for wildlife, and it has the greatest longevity of any crane event in the state. 1971 - Due to Klataske's persistent persuasion, the Omaha Birding Club votes to become the Audubon Society of Omaha, the first officially chartered chapter in the state.

    Extractions: The History of Tecumseh Historically, Tecumseh was located at the confluence of five major pioneer trails, and on the Big Nemaha River. Tecumseh was officially incorporated in 1856 and is the County Seat of Johnson County. Major growth was slow until 1872 when the railroad came through. Tecumseh remains a major point on the main line of the Burlington Northern Railroad. In 1890 a poultry processing plant was established in Tecumseh. This plant evolved into the present MBA Poultry facility. In 1892 National Rural Free Mail delivery was initiated in Tecumseh. In 1936 rural electrification (REA) originated in Tecumseh, although Tecumseh had its own electrical generating plant as early as 1888. The citizenry is a diverse racial mix, including Asian, Hispanic, African-American and Caucasian peoples. The main business is agriculture and associated industry and businesses. The population has remained rather constant at the 2,000 level. Tecumseh is noted for its many fine churches, its excellent schools (both public and private), fine recreational facilities and up-to-date hospital and medical care. The town is centered around its historical Courthouse Square. The Square is listed on the National Historical Registry. In 1986 the ABC miniseries "Amerika" was filmed on the Square in Tecumseh.

The Platte River forms the northern and eastern boundary of Saunders County and played a role in the development of the area. South of the river, the Burlington Railroad controlled, while the area to the north belonged to the Union Pacific Railroad. At one time, the river flowed across the county from the northwest corner diagonally to the southeast corner at Ashland. Today this old river bed is called the Todd Valley. The land is fertile and settlers drew lumber from the trees which lined the river, as well as fish and wildlife. A Brief History Native Americans inhabited the area as many as 6000 years ago. Contact with European fur traders in the 1700's brought contagious diseases such as small pox to these people and their population reduced. The Otoe and Pawnee lived in the area until they were forced to relocate by the government in the 1850's.

Tourism Companion Site home communities Yutan During the 1800's, families came to Saunders County from Sweden, Germany, Ireland, Czechoslovakia and other countries. Many of these early families enjoyed the Nebraska good life and their ancestors remain in the area today. During WWII, an Ordnance Plant in Mead, Nebraska brought many "outsiders" to the area, and many of the workers decided that Saunders County provided them the quality of life that couldn't be found in many other areas. The railroad played a major role in the development of Saunders County. When the Omaha and Republican Railroad, now the Union Pacific Railroad, extended their railroad line from Valley, Nebraska to Lincoln, Nebraska, they platted a 16 block village called Clear Creek. The name was changed in 1884 to Yutan, in memory of Chief Ietan, Oto-Missouri Indian, who was encamped southeast of the area until 1835. A post office was established at Headland, in 1868, about 3 1/2 miles southeast of today's Yutan. A stagecoach line ran from Fremont to Ashland but the railroad did not follow the same path. The post office relocated to Yutan in 1876.

    Extractions: Nebraska History for the Louis and Hilda Hellbusch Family Peace Lutheran Church There is a country church nestled near the "Timber Creek" not very far from Belgrade, Nebraska. The name of that picturesque church is "Peace Lutheran Church". During the 1920's Louis Hellbusch, as a young man, lived a couple of miles from this church. His future wife, Hilda Neemeyer lived only about a mile further. They both attended this church as children. They were also married at this church. On June 21, 1998, the church had it's centennial celebration. An article about this celebration is part of this web site. This is where Johann Friedrich Hellbusch Settled Grand Prairie Township Grand Prairie Township, first named Stearns Precinct, was established May 7, 1872. Originally comprised of township 19, range 1 west, and the eastern half of township 19, range 2 west, this precinct lost part of its territory when Burrows Township was created. The name "Stearns" was taken from a settler by the same name who operated an inn for teamsters in the precinct in 1870 and, in 1872, organized a school there. Later, when a controversy arose between him and another settler in the eastern part of the township, it was decided to call the precinct Grand Prairie and thus avoid favoritism.
