Extractions: Morrill County was established in 1909 out of the northern half of Cheyenne County. In the early days of the settlement of the great land area west of the Missouri River, the area including Morrill County was criss-crossed by the many trails used by the settlers moving through. From 1843 to 1869, thousands of emigrants followed leaving deep ruts on the prairie as evidence of their passing. The OregonTrail followed along the south side of the North Platte River. On the north side of the river, the Mormons made their way to Utah on the Mormon Trail from 1846 through 1868. The Pony Express passed through Morrill County, as did the Sidney-Deadwood Trail and the Overland Stage route. Early towns included Bridgeport, Bayard, Angora, Redington, Northport and Broadwater. The postoffices at Redington and Northport have been discontinued.
