Extractions: LINCOLN - Omaha Sen. Dan Lynch gave opening testimony to the Legislature's Education Committee on his bill to eliminate Class I and Class VI school districts by July 1. "This may sound rather severe, and it is," he said. But it's the next logical step in Nebraska's progression toward a "rational" K-12 education system, he said. Later in the hearing, long after Lynch had left, a supporter of the elementary-only (Class I) and high-school-only (Class VI) districts used much the same words to express his view that the Legislature should allow the districts to merge on their own. "This may sound harsh," Myron Buller of Atkinson said. "Leave us alone, and we will take care of it." Education Committee members must have felt a sense of déjà vu Tuesday afternoon as they were again faced with a roomful of people more than 100 wanting to speak their mind. Monday night it was teachers wanting salary increases; Tuesday it was rural people wanting anything but Lynch's bill, LB1447, or Omaha Sen. Mark Quandahl's LB1439. That bill would state the Legislature's intent to eliminate Class I and Class VI districts by July 1, 2002.

Extractions: Data-systems Coordinator, CSD To get a more organized approach to data collection, the Students and Teachers Exchanging Data, Information and Ideas (STEDII), a weather-education program of the Nebraska Earth Science Education Network (NESEN), have begun using something they call focused measurement periods (FMPs). Mark Mesarch, STEDII project coordinator, says that the purpose of the FMPs is to "find a realistic time period when we can ask students and teachers to take data and to pick a time when all the schools could get involved." A test run of the FMP concept was conducted from April 22-29. The results of the first FMP indicated "that we got about 80 percent of our STEDII schools to work together and iron out the data-collection and electronic bugs," Mesarch said. The FMPs were a way to standardize and stabilize the data-collection process in one of NESEN's most exciting new activities, the STEDII program. STEDII is a cooperative project with the Department of Agricultural Meteorology, said NESEN director Dave Gosselin, a research hydrogeologist with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Conservation and Survey Division (CSD). CSD, along with NASA, the UNL Information Services unit and others, co-sponsors NESEN. STEDII involves electronic data exchange STEDII involves the collection and electronic exchange of weather data among students and teachers at 28 schools across Nebraska. Gosselin said its goals include having students record daily weather observations; exchange data with other schools electronically; and interpret data and integrate Internet resources, focusing on those from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Students are learning to use the following weather instruments: maximum/minimum thermometer; sling psychrometer, rain gauge and wind speed and direction indicator, he added.

Extractions: This "page" is an ongoing project to see what relevant K-12 GeoScience resources are available "out there". This page (since it sits in Calgary ) has a definite petroleum or 'soft rock' bias. Also, since we're "in" Alberta, one of the initial focuses will start from Alberta Education's curriculum. This prescribes GeoScience topics in Science classes in Grade 3/7/8/11/12. Another aim of this page is to identify Calgary, Albertan, Canadian and International field trips and GeoScience sites of interest. I've also included general Earth Science Meta-links. Also the hope is that classroom projects, activities, and other GeoScience information produced by students will be pointed to or exhibited here. The overall point is to foster and facilitate dialogue among the 'greater' GeoScience community. [Top] [Grade 3/7/8/11/12] [Cal/Ab/Cdn/Earth Sites] [MetaLinks] All suggestions, materials, etc. to johnstos@cuug.ab.ca will be appreciated. Communication by students, teachers and other GeoScience Web authors is especially desired, in order to make this and other pages more useful to young GeoScientists. "The world we live in presents an endless variety of fascinating problems which excite our wonder and curiosity ... They indicate that - in general terms - scientific investigation is concerned with the manifestations and transformations of matter and energy in space and time. Put more briefly and philosophically, science is concerned with relationships between events." (from "Principles of Physical Geology", Arthur Holmes)
