Extractions: Hoagies WWW Schools for the Gifted The question is often asked, Are there special schools for gifted children? For highly gifted children? But there are few answers. This list attempts to be an answer, but comes with many caveats. First and foremost, schools are listed here by either their own or parent recommendations - this listing is in no way a recommendation for any specific school for a specific student. Some of these schools are public, some are private. Some test very strictly for gifted or highly gifted students; others are very specialized in their academics, and therefore draw such students without testing explicitly for the gifted. That said, at least this list is a beginning, a list of a few schools where at least some of our children can find a stimulating education, among other children like themselves. Also see our list of Early Entrance College Programs , programs specifically designed for the younger student ready for college level course work. And, don't miss this list of U.S. schools that specialize in LD students, often working well with gifted / LD students... LD Resources K-12 Schools with LD Programs, USA

Extractions: Local governments are especially dependent on property taxation Local governments are divided into many small units Other factors constrain local revenue State and local governments offer tax incentives to businesses to relocate ... Local governments already receive PILOTS from federal or state government In addition to the general risk factors just outlined, there are several specific factors that can increase the risk of being approached for a PILOT or SILOT. These factors are: Being a boarding schools or a boarding/day combination Needing zoning waivers, construction permits, or similar official approvals Launching a capital campaign Local governments are especially dependent on property taxation All local governments rely on property taxes as an important source of revenue. However, dependence is heavier in some parts of the country than in others. Thus, property taxes are 98 percent of local revenue in New England, but only 71 percent in the far west. The pressure for revenue from tax-exempt property is generally greater where local governments must rely on property taxes and lack access to income or sales tax revenue. Local governments are divided into many small units Another risk factor is location in a state where local government is divided into many small units, each of which has a correspondingly small tax base. Older east coast states with their proliferation of towns, townships, and school districts face serious problems in spreading the cost of their services. Because the tax base is small to begin with, the loss of tax revenue from exempt property has a bigger impact than in these states than in states where the primary units of local government are cities and counties.

For a moment I felt as if I were back at Hampshire Country School where I met a student who loved wolves. It's a place where a boy's interests were taken seriously and promoted. He collected wolf posters with faces like the ones on the card, all of them wrinkled from being unrolled, studied, and lovingly rerolled. When I called for an appointment to visit Hampshire Country School, Admissions Director, Bill Dickerman, asked me to plan my visit late enough in the afternoon for him to be back from "taking students to the lake for a swim and picnic lunch." If this sounds idyllic, it is. The School's campus in southern New Hampshire consists of 1700 wooded acres with rolling fields and several large accommodating New England farm houses. Idyllic as it is, I found that the physical setting takes second place to the home-away-from-home atmosphere which has been created by Director, Peter Ray, Ph.D., Bill Dickerman, Ph.D., and the school's teachers and house parents.

Extractions: New Hampshire Center for Public Policy Studies The Truth About New Hampshire's SAT Scores Author: Douglas E. Hall Executive Director New Hampshire Center for Public Policy Studies In Association with: Institute for Policy and Social Science Research University of New Hampshire April 1999 Summary of Findings Analysis of the scores of New Hampshire public school students on the 1994 SAT was done in 1995. That research resulted in some important findings that are relevant to todays educational discussion. Rather than rely on conventional wisdom and oft-repeated phrases, we hope that those with responsibility for educational policy and practice in the state will incorporate these factual findings into their understanding and deliberations. New Hampshire's oft-touted high SAT scores are based on comparison to a group of 23 states, not all 49 states. State average scores include both private and public schools students. An unusually high percentage of test-takers in New Hampshire attend private schools, including elite boarding schools. When comparing results among public school students only, New Hampshire is still among the states that have scores above average. Students from racial minorities comprise only 5% of New Hampshire's SAT test-takers and they greatly outperform their counterparts in other states.
