If you are able to visit the office in person, they have a genealogical research vault on the premises that is open to the general public and contains the actual vital records that date back to the year 1640. One especially nice advantage to this is that you can easily request all of the records of a particular surname and search through them yourself for clues. The research center is open to the public at 8:30 - 11:45 and 12:15 - 4:00 Monday through Friday (except on Wednesday when the vault closes early at 3:30). Volunteers will help you do your research. Call or visit the Web site to verify current fees for mail requests and hours for the research room.
