Extractions: The Chad School was founded in 1970 by a group of citizens dedicated to providing a high quality education to Newark children. It has grown from a storefront academy with 77 students to an elementary and high school that together educate 725 children beginning at age 3. The structured and challenging curriculum, class sizes of 20 or fewer children, and corps of dedicated teachers help create an engaging learning environment where every student succeeds. Extractions: In 1988, a vacant house in the heart of downtown Newark, New Jersey was selected as the site of a very special project. Dismayed by the inequality of education for children of the inner city, the late Dean Dillard Robinson and members of Trinity and St. Philips Cathedral founded St. Philips Academy in the Episcopal tradition. The founders were determined to prove that if time and effort were invested wisely in students, they would thrive. Dr. Maureen Fonseca was the first head of this unique school. Within a few years under Dr. Fonsecas stewardship, the experiment proved to be more successful than anyone imagined. St. Philips Academy, governed by a Board of Trustees, is an independent school committed to excellence for students in grades kindergarten through eight. The school promotes strong values, a diligent work ethic, tolerance, mutual respect for others, and personal responsibility. Students are accepted based upon their ability to learn regardless of a familys ability to pay full tuition. The Academy began in 1988 with ten first-graders. In 1996, St. Philips moved to its current home at 18 Washington Place. Enrollment has reached 235 for the 2002-2003 school year. The 24,000 square-foot facility, on the Registry of National Historic Buildings, is situated in Newarks historical and cultural district. Neighbors include The New Jersey Performing Arts Center, The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, The Newark Museum, and The New Jersey Historical Society.

Join the Voice of the Volunteer Fire Service; Join the National Volunteer Fire Council State Focus - New Jersey Passes Dormitory Sprinkler Law SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - On July, 6 2000 Governor Christine Todd Whitman signed into law a measure requiring every public and private school in New Jersey to install fire sprinklers in all dorm rooms within four years. Three Seton Hall University freshmen died and six others were critically injured in a Jan. 19 dormitory fire. The new law, which sped through the Legislature in less than six months, provides $90 million in low-interest and no-interest state loans to help the schools pay for the sprinklers. The Assembly and Senate each passed the bill unanimously, as lawmakers showed their desire to quickly address the issue in the wake of the deadly fire in Boland Hall, a freshman dormitory that was not equipped with sprinklers. "The NVFC applauds the initiative that New Jersey has taken in protecting students from fire," said NVFC Chairman Fred G. Allinson. "We encourage other states to follow New Jersey's lead and prevent tragedies like this from ever occurring again."
