Extractions: STATE AGRICULTURAL PUBLICATIONS State agricultural publications are an excellent source for agricultural information. The information is found in bulletins, reports, circulars, annual reports, technical reports, progress reports and other publications that each state publishes on topics concerning agriculture. The publications, in paper, can be found on the fifth All state agricultural publications, no matter their format (paper or microfilm) start with the call number S. Each state has its own specific number directly following the letter S. For example California is S39 Alabama is S31, and TEXAS is S117. The numbers following the state number (S117) indicate what kind of publication it is, (curricular, bulletin, or report). For example S31 E4 is a circular from the state of Alabama. The call number S31 E4 No. 262/279 means the circulars numbered 262- 279 are in the volume. So if you are looking for circular no. 272 it would be in S31 E4 No. 262/279. Unfortunately not all of Tech's state agricultural publication holdings are complete. An (*) placed in the holding record indicates that the holdings are incomplete. An * by the state name indicates that microfilm holdings in the east basement should be checked as well. Abbreviations were avoided wherever possible, but in some places they were used. This should not be a limiting factor in the use of this list. But if you are having trouble with abbreviations, the book

A MODIFIED CARROT WEEVIL (COLEOPTERA: CURCULIONIDAE) MONITORING TRAP Gerald M. Ghidiu and Richard W. VanVranken Rutgers Research Center Mays Landing, NJ 08330-1533 Until recently, growers generally used in-furrow granular insecticides or multiple soil-directed sprays of insecticides, such as azinphosmethyl, for control of carrot weevils. These materials killed the adults and larvae before they tunnelled into the roots. However, azinphosmethyl and parathion registrations on carrots were discontinued, and the management of carrot weevils is now obtained by repeated foliar applications of the pyrethroid esfenvalerate directed at the overwintered adults before they oviposit. However, the pyrethroids have a short residual period when exposed to the environment, and an accurate population monitoring system is necessary to determine adult activity. In New Jersey, it is recommended that growers begin insecticide sprays when adult activity begins (Anonymous 1995). A monitoring system for the weevils, then, must provide reliable and timely captures of adults.
Handling Florida Vegetables - Eggplant Mexico ships bushel cartons and bushel crates. new jersey uses the above containersplus ½bu. of FL coop. ext. Serv., IFAS, Cir 530, Gainesville, FL 32611. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/BODY_VH080
Extractions: Steve Sargent Florida produces about 51% of the commercially grown eggplant in the U.S. This vegetable is available from Florida all months of the year except August and September; annual production comes from approximately 2,250 acres and farm value is about $10 million. Other major U.S. suppliers are California and New Jersey; Mexico is the major supplier of imported eggplant. Although large-fruited, purple eggplant is most prevalent in the market, other types vary from egg-shaped to elongate. White eggplant, considered a specialty item, usually is 6 - 8 inches long and has a green calyx and edible skin. There also are miniatures, such as Baby white and Baby Japanese eggplants, also grown as specialties. The technology for production and handling of eggplants intended for distant markets does not differ from those techniques required for handling when this vegetable is intended for home use, or distribution through local markets. However, eggplants to be shipped to distant markets should be more carefully graded and packed. Cultivar Selection - As there are many types of eggplant which mature to a specific size, shape, and color, proper selection of cultivar for the intended market is of paramount importance. Furthermore, selection should also be based on adaptability to the particular growing area. Failure to select a suitable cultivar may lead to reduced yields and poor market acceptance. The following characteristics should be considered in selection of eggplant cultivars for use in Florida: yield/packout, disease resistance, horticultural quality, adaptability to the environment, and market acceptance. Eggplant cultivars recommended for production in Florida are contained in Reference No. 4.
